WHAT IS A POEM?


The title
usually relates
to life and our
surroundings.
It is a creative
form of
writing.
Made up of a
group of lines
called stanza.
Consists of
short lines
and words
that rhyme.
Usually
written in the
first person
"I".
Expresses
deep feelings
in a beautiful
manner.
Is written to
communicate
a person's
feelings.
Can be a
descriptive,
narrative or
an abstract
poem.
Consists of elements
such as literal and
figurative meanings,
theme, style and
language, point of
view, mood, tone
and poetic devices.
The Ways to Study the Poem
THEME
Central idea or meaning of the
poem.
-The ideas and comments usually
come from the poet.
-About issues in the poem.
STYLE
-How the writer presents the
poem.
-The way he conveys the meaning
of the poem.
-Done through literary devices.
-Examples: rhyme, simile,
personification, etc.
The Characteristics of a Poem
Uses rhyme and rhythm to heighten the meaning and
to create a musical effect in the poem.
Uses fewer words than prose to express an idea.
Uses the sounds of language in a special way.
WHAT IS A SHORT STORY?


The characters
are not well-
developed.
Can be read in
one sitting of
half an hour to
two hours.
It is a short
piece of fiction
written in
prose.
The length is
between 15 to
20 pages.
Tells a story
within a certain
time and place.
Sometimes has
an unexpected
ending or twist
at the end.
Less
complicated
plot and fewer
characters
involved.
Usually one or
two themes
fully
developed.
Revolves
around one or
two main
characters.
Has a general or
specific lesson
about life which
is related to the
tittle of the story.
Has all the elements of
a novel such as point
of view, theme, plot,
characters, setting,
imagery and style.
Poem
Rhyme
-normally occurs at the ending
of each line of the poetry.
-consists of words which have
the same sound.
Rhythm
-pattern of sounds used
Types of Poems
There are seven types of poem. They are:-
*Ballad- A narrative poem, often of folk origin and intended
to be sung.
*Sonnet- A poem with fourteen lines which rhyme with each
other in a fixed pattern.
*Lyric- A poem that expresses personal and emotional
feelings.
*Narrative verse- A poem that tells a story.
*Elegy- A poem or song composed as a lament for a
deceased person.
*Epigram- A short, witty poem expressing a single thought or
observation.
