International Assignments

Theme: London Business School Culture and Communications Audit
Faculty: Gabrielle Adams & Xi Zou

\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Faculty
Dr. Xi Zou is an Assistant Professor in the Organisational Behaviour subject
area. Xis research draws on social psychology in an effort to understand how
social structures, social roles, and cultures affect peoples judgments and
behaviours in business organisations. Currently, she is studying the
international adjustment among expatriates and repatriates. She also studies
how social network structures affect individuals' well-being and emotional
experience.
Dr. Gabrielle Adams is Assistant Professor of Organisational Behaviour at
London Business School. Gabe's work focuses on why people help or
harm others. In particular, she is interested in why people behave
unethically, as well as people's punitive or vengeful responses to such
wrongdoing. She also studies when and why people choose to do things
that benefit others, such as donate to charities or give gifts.

Our trip this year follows a 17-year history of successful field trips in Johannesburg, Cape Town,
and Durban. We continue to carry out these projects because we are convinced that they serve
several important purposes exceptionally well. First and foremost, they serve as an invaluable
learning opportunity for our students. Second, we have come to appreciate not only what
excellent learning it provides to students but how much genuine benefit our audits can deliver to
companies. You will be in a position to share your skills and fresh perspective with organisations
that would likely not otherwise receive this kind of service. The ideas and data shared are often
found to be extremely valuable by our hosts. Finally, the programme serves as a nice opportunity
to communicate the excellence of London Business School and the Leadership Programmes on a
global scale.
International Assignment Cape Town
27 July 1 August 2014
We aim to:
Learn about the role and functions of corporate culture by focusing on organisations internal
communication practices.
Provide organisations with an efficient data-based diagnosis of their internal communications,
advising on areas of best practice and issues for further attention.
Enhance the reputation of London Business School and its Executive MBA programme as a
leading international centre of excellence in business education.

Cape Town is the second-most populated city in South Africa after Johannesburg, and the provincial
capital and primate city of the Western Cape. With a population of 3.7 million, it is one of the most
multicultural cities in the world, reflecting its role as a major destination for immigrants and
expatriates to South Africa.

Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town is the quintessential melting pot: it is a city alive with creativity, colour, sounds and
tastes. While walking through the citys streets and meeting its people, you will fall in love with its
natural beauty, creative freedom and incredible spirit. Cape Town is a city where the unexpected is
always just around the corner and the beautiful province of the Western Cape lies ready to be explored
across the city border.

Course Organisation

Students work in study groups (four to six members) and are assigned to one South African company for
which they will conduct a data-based diagnosis of an organizational issue. The organisational issue
broadly relates to perceived culture and communication problems in the company. Prior to signing up to
the International Assignment, the LBS faculty trip leaders and the EMBA programme office will have
spoken to these companies about the general purpose of the International Assignment and its logistics.
LBS faculty will also have spoken to company representatives about the possible range of objectives and
about the need to come to an agreement about a doable objective(s) with the study groups. Each study
groups project includes pre-work, investigation, presentation, and report components.

Pre-work

Companies expect that the study group will have the first contact with them in early June (at the latest)
to start the pre-work component of the project with them. The purpose of the pre-work phase is to
specify the objective, understand the background of the company, and sketch a possible interview
schedule. The pre-work will need to be communicated to the professors through a brief report (following
the instructions in the Pre-work work sheet). The quality of the pre-work will influence the final grade of
the group (along with the company and assessment reports, see below). The professors will be available
for consultation during pre-work.

Investigation

After pre-work, we will start our investigation component of the project in South Africa, starting with a
welcome briefing, drinks, and dinner on Sunday. You will spend three working days (Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday) on company premises, meet with representatives and conduct research (e.g., interviews,
archival record study, focus groups, surveys) tailored to the objective of the project. On Thursdays, you
will need to analyse your data and prepare a project presentation which you will deliver Friday to the
company. During the investigation period, your group will meet with the professors who will give you
feedback on your project and presentation plans. We will close the investigation component with a
tourist visit, drinks, and closing dinner on Friday afternoon and evening.

Reports

Three weeks after you presented your findings, you will need to send a company report to the company
representatives and the professors. You will also need to send an assessment to the professors, which
summarizes the wider learning points of your project.

Assignments

The reports should be submitted to your faculty advisor (Gabrielle Adams gadams@london.edu / Xi Zou
czou@london.edu).

Your grade for the Field Trip will be based upon three documents:
The Prework Document (20%)
The Company Report (40%), which you are responsible for sending to the company within
three weeks of the exercise.
The Assessment (20%).
Individual Participation (20%) based on teammates and professors ratings

Late submissions will attract a deduction of 5 points for each day that it is late.
We will be strict about imposing grade penalties for late submission of reports according to a scale of
lateness. There are three reasons for this. First, we consider quick feedback to companies good
Course Outline & Assessment
professional practice in line with our reputation. Second, it is best for you to get reports done while the
memory is still fresh. And third, it is in the interests of equity among groups that we rigorously apply
this policy.

Pre-Work Component
There is no strict word limit/formatting instructions attached to this document, but please try not to go
over four pages (including tables and figures). Be succinct. Use only as many words as needed to make
or support an argument. Use figures and tables if they summarize key arguments. Do not create
redundant information by commenting on a self-explanatory figure or table. If you refer to academic
frameworks, then provide a reference at the end of your pre-work document.

1. Describe the preliminary objective of your assignment: What is the purpose of your project?
a. Why is the objective relevant to the organization?
b. How is the objective relevant to the understanding of management of people and organizations in
general? Which content areas (e.g., change management; incentives etcetera) will you understand
better at the end of this assignment and why?
2. Which academic frameworks will feed into your project? Why those?
3. Which methods of investigation are you planning to use? Why? Why not other methods?
4. Sketch a preliminary plan that details the components of your groups pre-work. Comment on the
obstacles you anticipate in the pre-work and how you could deal with them.
5. Sketch a preliminary investigation/project plan for your time in Cape Town. Comment on the
obstacles you anticipate in executing the project and how you could deal with them.

The Company Report
1. There are many different ways of organising reports, and we shall not set a rigid model for you to
follow. It is up to you to frame a report that is consistent with the objectives agreed upon with
company representatives as well as with issues and data you have uncovered. However the following
are important guidelines for producing a good report.
2. A good way of organising material is around a series of themes that have been revealed.
3. Be sure to describe your database. This includes an account of how many people at different levels
participated and under what format (e.g., interview, focus group, etc). Do not state informants
names - all interviews are conducted under assurances of anonymity.
4. Make liberal use of (unattributed) quotes and specific data summaries to give credibility to your
observations (e.g., "with only one or two exceptions, all the supervisors with whom we spoke said that
they were unclear about the company's strategy")
5. Do not conclude with "recommendations," but rather with some less normative heading such as
"implications and issues for attention. Your report should not tell companies what to do, but you
can suggest possible courses of action and consider the possible costs and benefits of each. You
should also suggest where further inquiry may be advantageous to this end. You can state your
subjective impressions, if companies have indicated they would welcome this, but make sure they are
clearly flagged as such.
6. You may want to include the overheads you use in your presentations as an Appendix, or use other
graphical representations. There is no set length for the company report, but do use your discretion
to ensure that it is suitable brief in order for it to be an effective and persuasive piece
communication.

Your group grade will be based on the excellence of these company reports. The mark will be awarded
based on how well you met your objectives as well as on the usefulness of your report as an aid for the
company.

You are responsible as a group for agreeing in advance how the report will be produced and for
scheduling any necessary group meetings in good time.

The Assessment
The Assessment is exclusively for the Professors, but is meant to be completed as a group. It is an
opportunity to justify the decisions you made, and to reflect on your learnings. While we suggest that the
Company Report focuses on the results of your communication audit, the Assessment report should
summarise why you made the specific strategic decisions that you outlined in the company report, and
affords an opportunity for you to give any other relevant background information. It should also
summarise any wider learning points about culture from the investigation. It should contain the following
elements:
1. Context: Explain, in terms of what you know about the company and your initial brief with its
representatives and why you chose to frame the report as you have. This should also include mention
of any relevant feedback you received from your oral presentation to companies.
2. Method: Supply further information about how you conducted your inquiry. Be sure to mention any
special problems that arose and may have led to issues being handled in a particular way in the
Company Report. This should include a critique of your own method, and how, with hindsight, you
might have conducted the inquiry more effectively.
3. Implications: Summarise what you have learned about company culture and communications. What
are the wider implications of what you and other groups have found? What key issues from the
materials you have been given are highlighted by your inquiry?

In very exceptional circumstances an extension may be agreed in advance for the Assessment. However,
there will be no extensions for the company reports.

Grading of participation
Half of your participation grade will be based upon your teammates ratings of you (which we will solicit
at the end of the trip) through individual surveys (students comments and ratings will not be revealed to
one another). The other half will be based upon the professors evaluations of how much you have
contributed to your team.

Grade Distribution
Once numerical scores have been awarded to each report the grades will then be ranked and the elective
grade curve applied. All students within a group will receive the same grade for the report.

Travel advice for South Africa

TRAVEL SUMMARY
There has been an increase in strike action in South Africa and some demonstrations have turned
violent. Follow developments in the local media and avoid all demonstrations, rallies and large public
gatherings.

There is a very high level of crime, but the most violent crimes occur in townships and isolated areas
away from the normal tourist destinations.

There have been incidents involving foreigners being followed from OR Tambo International Airport in
Johannesburg to their destinations by car and then robbed, often at gunpoint. Be vigilant in and around
the airport and when driving away.

The standard of driving is variable and there are many fatal accidents.

Most visits to South Africa are trouble-free.

There is an underlying threat from terrorism.

Take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before you travel.

Make sure you have at least 2 blank pages in your passport on arrival.

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Safety and Security Terrorism

There is an underlying threat from terrorism. Attacks, although unlikely, could be indiscriminate,
including in places visited by expatriates and foreign travellers.

Safety and Security - Crime
South Africa has a very high level of crime, including rape and murder. The risk of violent crime to
visitors travelling to the main tourist destinations is generally low. The South African authorities give
high priority to protecting tourists and tourism police are deployed in several large towns. Most cases of
violent crime occur in the townships. Consult a reliable tour guide if you visit a township.

Incidents of vehicle hi-jacking and robbery are common, particularly after dark. Keep to main roads and
park in well lit areas.

There are frequent incidents of car windows being broken and valuables taken while cars are waiting at
junctions. Keep valuables out of sight.

Due to thefts at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, you should vacuum-wrap luggage
where local regulations permit. Keep all valuables in your carry-on luggage.

Keep large amounts of money, expensive jewellery, cameras and phones out of sight. Dont change or
withdraw large sums of money in busy public areas including foreign exchange facilities or ATMs.
Health & Safety in South Africa
Information source: Foreign and Commonwealth Office website www.fco.gov.uk

Thieves operate at international airports, and bus and railway stations. Keep your valuables safe and
baggage with you at all times.

Dont give personal or financial account information details to anyone. There are international fraud
rings operating in South Africa, who may target visitors and charities.

Safety and Security Money

There are limits on the amount of currency you can bring into South Africa. For cash in South African
Rand (ZAR), the limit is 10,000ZAR. For combinations of cash in other currencies, the limit is
US$10,000 (or equivalent). You should declare any amount higher than this on entry to South Africa.

There is a high incidence of credit card fraud and fraud involving ATMs. Make sure your PIN is not seen
by others when withdrawing money from an ATM. Refuse offers of help from bystanders. Dont change
large sums of money in busy public areas.

Protect any documents containing details of credit cards or bank accounts.

LOCAL LAWS AND CUSTOMS

Always carry your identity documentation or a copy of your passport. Youll need to be able to produce
valid identification on request by South African officials.

Drug-taking and smuggling is an offence.

EMERGENCY SERVICES NUMBERS-

If you need emergency medical assistance during your trip, dial 10177 and ask for an ambulance. You
should contact your insurance/medical assistance company promptly if you are referred to a medical
facility for treatment.

Company Information
In 2004, the BrandsEye team had a burning desire to know what consumers were saying about our
clients their brands, their campaigns, their people - you name it. It drove us to start manually
look for the conversations using search engines (which was painful). We then turned to the various
free services available without much luck. With an in-depth knowledge and understanding of how
the Internet works, a clear view of what outcome we wanted from a monitoring solution and the
development skills to make it happen, we embarked on our mission. After two years of early
morning and late night development, our creation was born.

www.districtsix.co.za

Company Information
District Six was named the Sixth Municipal District of Cape Town in 1867. Originally established as
a mixed community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, labourers and immigrants,
District Six was a vibrant centre with close links to the city and the port. By the beginning of the
twentieth century, however, the process of removals and marginalisation had begun.
The first to be forced out were black South Africans who were displaced from the District in 1901.
As the more prosperous moved away to the suburbs, the area became a neglected ward of the city.
On 11 February 1966 it was declared a white area under the Group Areas Act of 1950, and by
1982, the life of the community was over. More than 60 000 people were forcibly removed to
barren outlying areas aptly known as the Cape Flats, and their houses in District Six were flattened
by bulldozers.
The District Six Museum, established in December 1994, works with the memories of the District
Six experience and with that of forced removals more generally.

Company Information
What began as a conversation with women in the townships around Cape Town, has become a
dynamic Social Enterprise. We have built a thriving network of 5 worker-owned sewing co-operatives
supporting around 50 women and their families; and it is still growing.
It is the brainchild, or more accurately, the heart child of Nicole-Marie Iresch, who recognised the
energy and potential of township women and she is into her second decade of tireless work to give
them meaningful opportunity and translate and transport their spirit and creativity out into the rest
of the world.
Once described as a partnership between Richard Branson and Mother Theresa, we put
Townships success down to its solid foundations. It is not just a business, it is not just a non-profit
organisation, it is not just a network of co-operatives it is a unique partnership between all three
and harnesses the focused power and talent of each cog in the wheel.

Reciprocitys Township Immersion Experience focus on a site visit in
very low-income areas, allowing direct contact and interaction with a
typical peri-urban base of the economic pyramid (BoP) environment
in South Africa.

Gaining a better understanding of the economic ecosystem at the
base of the pyramid, some of its challenges and potential
opportunities;

Deconstructing some of the conventional thinking about poverty and low-income communities;

Gaining awareness of how innovative economic models are impacting the lives of people in low-income
communities

The immersion experience will seek to have a real impact in terms of understanding some of the dynamics of
emerging economies. Students will get a chance take a real-world look at the value chains of different
economic sectors, and be given a chance to meet with stakeholders along these value chains.

Four themes
Access to financial services

The retail landscape in South Africas emerging middle classes

Housing and Energy

Enterprise Development and Informal markets

Identifying the needs, visualizing opportunities
Students will experience Nyanga, Langa, Philippi or Khayelitsha, four of Cape Towns most vibrant
townships, each with its distinct character and history. Each group will be accompanied by a local
crewleader. As members of the communities you will meet, the crewleaders are not only familiar with the
areas we will visit, but also with the topics at hand.

The journey is above all designed to be a personal experience, one that will trigger new thinking about the
BoP, its challenges and above all the opportunities present.
