QMT 323E - Design and Development of Web Based

Instruction

Assalamualaikum and Very Good Morning.
Today I am going to give a talk on this undergraduate
course, QMT 323E Design and Development of Web-
based Instruction. It is a great pleasure to be invited to
give this presentation for the benefits of the students.

The term web-based instruction was first coined by Prof.
Dr. Badrul Khan through his best-selling Web-based
Instruction book in 1997 which paved the way for the new
field which is e-learning.

Besides, a warm tribute to Sir Tim Berners Lee who was
the inventor and pioneer of the term World Wide Web and
has changed the world tremendously, to become more
transparent, connected and resourceful.

Synopsis

This course has been divided into two parts: Firstly, it is
the Design part and Secondly is the Development part.

The Design part covers the theoretical background of
learning:
These include the 21
st
Century Skills in todays education
and exposing all the 8 skills that students should be well
equipped after their university life.

Other interesting topics to be covered in this course are
Blooms Taxonomy, The concept of new teaching and
learning, i.e. Student Centered Learning, Web 2.0
technologies, ADDIE model and right up to Internet Ethics
and Security.

Whereas the second part, is the developmental stage
where students will have to develop a portfolio of an e-
book, e-magazine, e-newsletter, e-bulletin, etc.

Students are also exposed to understand the basic of
HTML tags and the usage of all Web 2.0 tools.

Therefore, overall, this course is made up of 60%
coursework and 40 % paper based examinations.

Objectives of the course:

The overall goal of this course is the application of
instructional design and development concepts and
principles.
These will include pedagogical, technological, organizational,
and ethical issues related to the design, development and
assessment of web-based instruction.
After completion of this course, the students will be
able to:

o 1. Demonstrate the ability to apply the 21st Century Education,
Blooms Taxonomy, ADDIE model , Web 2.0 technology and the
new Learning Theories in this era ,
o 2. Apply Usability Principles to design and develop a good
website,
o 3. Understand the basic HTML tag to apply in the development
of a website ,
o 4. Discuss the Web ethics and security in web design and
development; and
o 5. Develop a good website by applying all the theories and
principles that was discussed.

21
st
Century Education

Today, we are living in the 21
st
century, our community
vibrancy, personal quality of life, economic viability and
business competitiveness depended on a well prepared
citizenry and workforce. (show the 21
st
century skills
framework -half moon picture)
Therefore, we need quality education that instills Knowledge,
Skills and Values that are relevant in contributing to this
vision. (find a picture for this)
We need to develop 21
st
Century Critical Thinkers that are
Open-Minded, Engage in Problem Solving, Analyze, Reason
and Evaluate, Collaborate with Others, Make Real-World
Applications, Think Creatively and Critically, Communicate
Clearly and Accurately and Reflect on Learning. (put in the
picture for 25 critical thinking strategies for the modern
learner)
We also need to develop students Beyond the 3Rs. The 8
th

New Skills that includes: Leadership, Digital Literacy,
Communication, Emotional Intelligence, Entrepreneurship,
Global Citizenship, Problem Solving and Team Working. (the
red diagram from Linkedin).
Moreover, there are 7C which are Critical Thinking and
doing, Creativity, Collaboration, Cross-cultural
Understanding, Communication, Computing/ICT Literacy,
Career and Learning Self Reliance.
Why 21
st
century education because of the Generation
Gap between Baby Boomers, to Generation X, to Gen Y and
Gen Z. (put in the picture).
The 21
st
century Learning is very much Learner Centered,
Media Driven and Personalized. It is very interdependent,
increased transparency between schools and communities.
Media and assessment relates; content areas are related to
real life activities and technology support learning. (show the
diagram green teach thought).
This can be seen in the Old school vs the New School where
Tablets, Gaming, TV, Video, Internet, Mobile Devices and
Apps and Gadgets are used in their everyday life.
There was an increase role of Games in Online Learning,
More Interactivity rather than just Power Point slides.
Massive Open Online Courseware or MOOC is a new
buzzword that circulates in higher education today.
And all these promote e-learning. (Show the video)

In order to cater for 21
st
century learning, the classroom itself
must be designed for this 21
st
century learning i.e. Real
World Education that focuses on Project based Learning that
not only teaches concepts but also organization, articulation,
project management and collaboration. Integration of skills
can enhance student engagement and retention that will
prepare them for 21
st
century careers.
This is also same for online courses, Games and
Gamification, Learning Analytics, Open Source Textbooks
and Integration of Social Networks.
For a simple 21
st
century classroom, it consists of a Digital
Projector, Interactive Whiteboard, Teacher Laptop,
Audio/Visual System and Student Response system. (show
the slide Jackson, 2013).
In todays education, Blended Learning i.e. a combination of
Traditional Learning and Online Learning will make learning more
effective, efficient, and engaging. It is a shift to online delivery that
will make students and teachers become more productive within
the classroom and also outside the classroom.
To run blended learning:
1. Start with Learning Goals.
2. Decide on which platform and content to be used
3. Lastly, choose which devices to be used.
10 Drivers of Blended Learning
1. Improve ability to personalize learning
2. Potential for individual progress
3. Improved students engagement and motivation
4. Shift to online state tests
5. Need to extend time and stretch resources
6. Potential to extend the reach of effective teachers
7. Ability to improve working conditions
8. Decreased device cost
9. Student and Parent adoption of learning apps, and
10. Interest in narrowing the digital divide.

In order to cater for different types of Learning Styles, refers to the
ways you prefer to approach new information. There are seven
learning styles: Visual, Aural, Verbal, Physical, Logical, Social and
Solitary. (Put in the picture for this)
The concept of Flipped Classroom is very common nowadays. It
emphasizes on
1. Experience (experiential engagement)
2. What? (Concept exploration)
3. So What? (Meaning making)
4. Now What? (Demonstration & Application )
The Flipped Classroom inverts traditional teaching methods,
delivering instruction online outside of class and moving
homework into the classroom.
Students watch lectures at home at their own pace and time, and
then communicate with peers and teachers via online discussion.
Concept engagement takes place in the classroom with the help of
the instructor.
The results before the Flip 44% freshman failed math, After the
flip 13% failed math.
