Pre-Assignment EEN1016

Objective:
To introduce the use of software simulation tool (PSpice) to verify and analyze circuits.
To learn to use some of the functions of the software simulation tool

Procedures:
Students are to read through the example and reproduce the simulation result with different
frequencies.

Diode Circuits
SMALL SIGNAL ANALYSIS OF DIODE CIRCUIT
The diode circuits shown in Figure 1 has VS = 10V, Vm = 50mV at 1kHz, RL = 3k and
VT = 26mV. Assume the diode can be represented by piecewise linear model, with V =
0.6V and Rf = 25 and has a emission coefficent of 1.84. Determine the instantaneous
diode voltage vD. Use PSpice to verify the results by plotting the instantaneous diode
voltage.

Calculation Procedure
1. Using piecewise linear model in the DC equivalent circuit

Applying KVL:
V
s
I
D
R
L
V

I
D
R
f
= 0
I
D
= 3.17 mA
V
D
= V

+ I
D
R
f
= 0.6V + 3.17mA(25) = 0.679V

2. Using the dynamic resistance in the AC equivalent circuit:

r
d

T
I
V
= 15.09

d
= t sin V
R + r
r

L d
d

3. Therefore, the instantaneous diode voltage
D
is the sum of V
D
and
d
.

D

D

d
= 0.679 + 250 x 10
-6

PSpice Simulation Procedure
1. Arrange the circuit as shown in Figure 1.1 in PSpice Schematics.

2. To begin, place the following parts in the work area:
Draw _Get New Part

Tips:
To get parts: Press Ctrl+G
To place a component in a desired orientation, you can press Ctrl+R to rotate the
symbol, and press Ctrl+F to flip the symbol.
To draw wires: Press Ctrl+W
To set component attributes: Double-click on the component or visible attribute

3. Set up VDC attributes by double-clicking the symbol
DC 10V Save Attr
PKGREF V
S
Save Attr

4. Set up VSIN attributes by double-clicking the symbol; change offset, amplitude and
frequency in the popup window:
VOFF 0 Save Attr
VAMPL 50mV Save Attr
FREQ 1k Save Attr

5. Double-click on resistor R1 and set its value to 3k:
VALUE 2k Save Attr
PKGREF RL _ Save Attr

6. Double-click on diode D1 and label it as D:
PKGREF D Save Attr

7. To obtain a plot of vD versus time, we must initialize the transient analysis:
Analysis Setup Transient
Click on Transient Print Step 2us
Final Time 2ms
[2ms to show 2 cycles of the 1kHz sine wave]

8. Save the circuit and run the simulation:
Analysis Simulate [or press F11]

9. In the PSpice A/D window, select Trace option from the pull-down menu:
Trace Add Trace V1(D)
10. Enable the cursor as to trace the cutoff frequency on the frequency response curve:
Trace Cursor Display

11. Two cursors are available:
Left-click and drag to move cursor 1
Left-click and drag to move cursor 1
Right-click and drag to move cursor 2

12. The cursors can be dragged around (using mouse or arrow keys) and their coordinates
are displayed on the small "Probe Cursor" window [A1 for cursor 1, A2 for cursor 2
and dif for the difference between A1 and A2].

13. The current position of the cursor can be marked by using:
Plot Label Mark

14. The waveform can then be saved by invoking:
Window Display Control New Name: <enter name> Save

Hint:
Use Trace _ Cursor _ Peak to find the peak value of the waveform

16. Previous calculation gives VD = 0.679 V and vd = 250 x 10
-6
sin t, which closely
agree with the PSpice results

------------------------------------------------------- End of Example ---------------------------------------------------------

Your Pre- assignment Task:

REPEAT THE ABOVE PSPICE SIMULATION with the following modification on AC source:

V
m
sin wt

Where V
m
= 50mV and Frequency = *last 2 digits of your student ID* X 10

Eg. if your student ID is 123456789, then the frequency would be 89 X 10 = 890 Hz.

Kindly save the Schematic diagram and output voltage waveform ( which must show 2 full cycles)
from Pspice into word document file and renamed the word document to
yourStudentID_pre_assignment.doc and submit to following email address:
