DAUGHTERS IN COLLEGE
Did you hear about the banker who was
recently arrested for embezzling $100,000
to pay for his daughter's college
education?
As the policeman, who also had a
daughter in college, was leading him away
in handcuffs, he said to the banker, "I have
just one question for you. Where were you
going to get the rest of the money?"

WITCH STORY
He was a junior bank executive and he had
swindled one hundred thousand dollars
from his bank - all of which he'd lost at the
races. The bank examiners were coming
the next day, and when he confessed the
whole thing to his wife, she packed her
bags and left him.
Totally despondent, he walked to a nearby
bridge and stood at the edge of it about to
jump off and end it all. Suddenly a voice
called, "Young man, don't do that! There is
no need to end your life! I'm a witch and I
can help you!"
"I doubt it," he said sadly, "I've stolen a
hundred thousand dollars from the bank,
for which I'll probably be arrested
tomorrow, and my wife has left me."
"Young man, witches can do anything," she
said. "I'm going to perform a witch miracle.
"She said, "ALAKAZAM! The hundred
thousand dollars has been replaced and
there's another hundred thousand in your
safe deposit box! ALAKAZAM! Your wife is
back homeagain!"
He looked at her in disbelief, "Is this all
true?" he asked.
"Of course," she said, "But to keep it true
you must do one thing."
"Anything!" he said, "Anything!"
"You must make friends with Asif Zardari. I
need his wealth."

PADDY THE ACCOUNTANT
Paddy wanted to be an accountant, so he
went for an aptitude test. The tester
asked, " If I give you two rabbits, two
rabbits, and another two rabbits, how many
rabbits have you got?" Paddy replied,
"Seven!"
The Tester said, "No, listen carefully again.
If I give you two rabbits, two rabbits, and
another two rabbits, how many rabbits
have you got?" Paddy paused and replied,
"Seven!" Frustrated, the Tester
responded, "Let's try this another way. If I
give you two bottles of beer, two bottles of
beer, and another two bottles of beer, how
many bottles of beer have you got?" Paddy
quickly replied, "Six!"
The Tester was relieved! "Good! Now, if I
give you two rabbits, two rabbits, and
another two rabbits, how many rabbits
have you got?" Again, Paddy replied,
"Seven!" At his whits end the Tester shook
his head and grumbled, "How on earth do
you work out that three lots of two rabbits is
seven?" Paddy shrugged with a grin, "I've
already got one rabbit at home!"

Magnificence diminish, nor can the us of the
implorer go in vain. As this us comprises
mainly of those who are held dearly by
Allaah-SWT and are the bearers of His-SWT
All-Embracing Grace, it is indeed beyond
His-SWT Graciousness to accept the
invocation of such a large group and reject the
prayer of an individual. In truth, even the
humblest and most devoted supplications and
prayers can never be worthy of acceptance in
His-SWT Court, because His-SWT Majesty
and Glory are far too sublime. On the other
hand our present situation is such that the
element of humility and awe are totally missing
from our prayers.
And when the supplications of the righteous,
the Sujud of the Shuhada, the worship of the
Mujahidin of Islam offered in the heat of the
battle, the adoration of Angels and
Allaah-SWT s Messengers, and above all
those offered by the Holy Prophet-SW are
taken in view, then our worship appears
worthless. But observe Allaah-SWT s Mercy in
the manner of prayer taught to us: You-SWT
Alone do we worship and from You-SWT
Alone we seek help, this collectively interlaces
our prayers with those of the Prophets, the
Aulia and the Shuhada and carries them to the
Door of Divine acceptance.
Praise be to Allaah-SWT ! The Magnificence
of Allaah-SWT was already known to the
worshipper, but as he observes the
submission and humility of His-SWT elite, it is
further endorsed on his Qalb that Allaah-SWT
Alone is the Bestower, and all the rest are
dependant upon Him-SWT .

Turkey has already lost its impartiality in the
ongoing civil war in Syria by extending support
to moderate opposition fighters, i.e., the Free
Syrian Army (FSA), which has already lost
influence in Syria and been replaced by
extreme Islamic fighters.
Even if accusations that the Turkish
government has been giving support to
extreme radical groups fighting against Syrian
regime turn out to be false, Ankara has long
been perceived, both internationally and
domestically, as a country that has bizarre
relations with unwelcome non-state actors
such as jihadists.
There is an urgent need for Ankara to readjust
its foreign policy to become a credible and
respected partner with Western allies as well
as with its Arab neighbors.

Religion
The highest form of knowledge is the one that
is acquired through the ProphetsAS, which
served as the means of attaining the Rahimyat
aspect of people. It should also be noted that
Allaah-SWT s Grace (flowing from His-SWT
Attribute of Al-Rahman) is being manifested
only as long as this world exists, and the
believers and the non believers are equally
availing it. But once this world, which is the
stage for its display, comes to an end, this
Attribute too would cease to manifest. Since
the human beings have to pass on the eternal
world, they must seek, through the
ProphetsAS, the eternal component of
Allaah-SWT s Mercy (flowing from Al-Rahim).
If people remain indifferent towards the
attainment of Allaah-SWT s Rahimyat, and
feel contented with His-SWT Grace / Rahimyat
alone, they must realize that it will discontinue
as soon as this life is over. Then, if they had
not attained the former, they will be seized by
His-SWT punishment. For that reason
He-SWT is called Rahman ad-Dunya
(Gracious in the world) and Rahim al-Akhira
(Merciful in the Hereafter). It is by His-SWT
Mercy that He-SWT not only creates the entire
universe but also gives it a perfect balance,
beauty and grandeur. In short, every change
contains positive and constructive aspect, no
matter how destructive it may appear.
Withering of each flower actually heralds the
blossoming of a new bud. Again, in the
disappearance of the bud is the emergence of
a new flower. Thus a harp made by a
craftsman does not compose melodies on its
own, but it is the contribution of a tree that had
been felled for it.
This process of addition and elimination goes
on endlessly, as He-SWT has indicated that
He-SWT retains the beneficial and eradicates
the useless. Any aspect of subversion is
attributable to man himself, who foolishly
distorts the beauty of the universe. The human
life adds splendour and beauty to the canvas
of this world. Every human activity defines a
particular colour in this masterpiece. Thus,
when man treads the righteous path he makes
flowers bloom at each step. But when he
commits sins and transgresses, he blemishes
the beauty of the whole picture. He not only
abuses his own soul by committing a sin, but
the viciousness of his sin pollutes the whole
environment. Sin generates and spreads
mischief and trouble all around. That is why
the Creator of this beautiful universe has
warned the human beings: Do not create
mischief in the land. Disobedience of this
command deprives man of eternal salvation
and His-SWT Mercy.
"Owner of the day of Judgement.
The basic motive behind all human actions is
the attainment of benefit, so the one who can
reward a persons actions will naturally be the
centre of all his hopes; whom he could never
want to annoy. While it is Allaah-SWT Who
has control over the end result of every action
at all times and there shall be a Day of
judgement when no soul will be absent, and
no one will dare to claim any power or
authority. That will be the Day of ultimate
Requital. On that Day, the entire universe,
including the most stubborn deniers will
instantly acknowledge Allaah-SWT s Absolute
Sovereignty and Majesty, because He-SWT is
the Fountainhead of all excellence and the
Sustainer of the universe. All blessings
benefiting His-SWT creation, whether
temporary or permanent, are manifestation of
His-SWT Grace and Mercy. Indeed He-SWT
Alone is the Owner, Whose Ownership will be
acknowledged by everyone in the Aakhirah.
He-SWT has always been other only One
worthy of worship; and on the Day the denial
of every arrogant shall be wiped away like
sweepings.
You-SWT Alone do we worship and from
You-SWT Alone we seek help. Guide us
onto the straight Path.
By reciting the previous Ayah, the worshipper
achieves a certain level of nearness with
Allaah-SWT and feels himself in His-SWT
exalted presence, As soon as he realizes this,
he reverts from the indirect and submits
directly: You-SWT Alone do we worship and
from You-SWT Alone we seek help. For I have
observed the entire universe as resourceless
and You-SWT alone the Provider. I worship
You-SWT , because I am nothing within
myself, and I need Your-SWT help and
support through every moment of my life.
When You-SWT are so Gracious and Merciful,
and we so helpless and humble pleading for
your help with our foreheads touching down in
Sajdah before You-SWT , then O Allaah-SWT
! Guide us unto the Straight Path. It is worth
noticing that the singular pronoun I has been
replaced by the collective us. This is because
the devotee observes himself and the entire
universe in a state of Sajdah including
Allaah-SWT s chosen friends. Now he cannot
isolate himself from then and entreats: O
Allaah-SWT ! You-SWT Alone do we worship
and from You-SWT Alone we seek help, so
Guide us unto the Straight Path. The word us
includes all the righteous, the Shuhada, the
Siddiqin and the Prophets, All of whom are
requesting Allaah-SWT for guidance and
adherence to the right path. Because of
collective prayer of these noble souls, many
wrongdoers also receive Mercy and Guidance!
Praise be to Allaah-SWT ! What an amazing
prayer He-SWT has taught us; which can
never be rejected; neither can Allaah-SWT s

Prophethood-A Proof Of Allah-SWT's
Providence
This Divine Attribute of Providence is indeed a
proof of the validity of Prophethood. A human
being does not represent a physical body
alone, but both the body and the Spirit.
Whereas the human being has the knowledge
of his physical needs and the ways of
fulfilment, he must also know his spiritual
requirements and the means of
accomplishment. The intellect and knowledge
pertaining to physical body, its growth and the
related sciences are granted to the mind. All
minds differ in their capacity. Some people
excel others in various fields, and their help is
sought in matters pertaining to their particular
specialization. Similarly, the Qalb was Divinely
chosen as the seat of faculties required for
growth and advancement of Spirit. Then
Allaah-SWT sent ProphetsAS, masters in the
art of reforming human hearts, and mankind
benefited from these ProphetsAS and stood
spiritually reformed. Those who failed to
reform themselves died spiritually just like the
one deprived of food dies physically. It is the
Rabb, Who communicates with the ant and
the calf, and guides the honeybee to flowers
and teaches it to transform nectar into honey.
These are all manifestations of His-SWT
Attribute of Providence and it is befitting for
His-SWT Providence to confer Prophethood
upon His-SWT chosen people, and thus
provided for the life and development of the
Spirit. He-SWT speaks to the ProphetsAS
and blesses them with Revelation or
inspiration and intuition. The true and devoted
followers of the ProphetsAS are those who
practically spend their lives according to their
teachings. Form amongst these devotees,
some may receive a droplet of this great
blessing, commensurate with their capacity,
through sincere and devout adherence to the
ProphetAS. That actually is a reflection of the
Prophetic excellence and is known as Kashf,
Ilqa or intuition. A Prophet, however, clearly
and correctly discerns the content and
meaning of whatever is revealed upon him.
Possibility And Cause Of Error In The Kashf
Of A Wali
The Kashf of a Wali is also true, being a
communication from Allah-SWT, yet the
possibility of error in its interpretation cannot
be ruled out, because the perceptions of a
Wali are not as refined as that of a
ProphetAS. Therefore, it is imperative that a
Kashf of a Wali must conform to the teachings
of the Prophet-SW. Otherwise, it should be out
rightly rejected. Besides, it is incumbent on the
entire Ummah to obey all commands of their
Prophet-SW, while the Kashf of a Wali
constitutes no authority for others to follow.
The Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Al-Rahman and Al-Rahim are two synonymous
Divine Attributes pertaining to His-SWT Mercy.
Al-Rahman or the Gracious signifies a
transient Attribute. In Arabic grammar, verbs of
such phonetic balance (an) denote those
conditions, which do not exhibit permanency,
like ghaghban (to be angry), atshan (to be
thirsty), hairan (to be surprised). This Attribute
of Grace too, is a branch of Allaah-SWT s
Providence. Since He-SWT is the Creator and
the Rabb of the entire universe, He-SWT is
also Rahman, as it does not befit Him-SWT to
deprive any of His-SWT creatures from the
resources and means of sustaining life.
Therefore, as long as this universe exists, all
the creations will receive their share of
necessities to maintain their existence. This is
the general Mercy for all. Yet there is another
special and classified Mercy, emanating from
His-SWT Attribute of al-Rahim. Grammatically,
the verbs in this tense in Arabic language
denote permanence of attributes or actions,
e.g., Alim (The Knower), Hakim (The Wise).
The manifestation of Mercy in this case is
extensive and eternal, which will neither
diminish nor disconnect.
If we analyze His-SWT attribute of Mercy we
will see that His-SWT Providence (Rabubiyat)
inspite of its diversity is in itself. This aspect of
His-SWT Mercy (al-Rahim), in spite of its
element of Providence is in itself only a speck
of the vast field of Mercy. It is an aspect of
Mercy as it deals with educating the entire
universe on each and every aspect of their
existence. The knowledge given to the
creation for the fulfilment of their needs is also
a manifestation of this Attribute. The conferring
of honour and awards upon leading a
successful noble life, and the gifts of
excellence, beauty, and unlimited and
unimaginable favours in the Aakhirah, all
originate from the fountainhead of the Attribute
of Mercy as no one could have compelled
Allaah-SWT to do so. While the knowledge
granted by Allaah-SWT for the fulfilment of
needs is also a display of His-SWT Mercy.

Mercy) Is A Human Need

Muslim World
By: Harun Yhaya
Humanity First. No to Hatred. These words
were spoken by young French people out in
the streets to protest against rising fascism.
The Ebola virus could solve the world
population explosion. These horrific words,
spoken against migration, again come from
France, from Jean-Marie Le Pen, founder and
honorary president of the extreme right-wing
National Front.
Under the leadership of Jean-Maries youngest
daughter, Marine, the National Front won the
highest share of the vote in the EP elections in
France, at 25%: Extreme right-wing parties in
other European countries, too, not just in
France, also caused alarm by raising their
shares of the vote. These parties, whose talk
and philosophies are based on racism,
anti-immigration, Islamophobia and isolation
instead of unity, took 23% of the votes in
Denmark, 28% in Great Britain with United
Kingdom Independence Party, 19,5 % in
Austria with the Freedom Party of Austria, 15%
in Hungary with the Jobbik Party, 13% in
Finland with the Finns Party, 30% in Belgium
with the New Flemish Alliance and 12% in
Greece with the Golden Dawn Party.
This severe lovelessness in Europe did not
appear only with the EP elections. The first
foundations of racism in Europe can be seen
in the city-state of Sparta. The practices of the
Inquisition, the product of a totalitarian way of
thinking, made Medieval Europe a very grim
place. Fascism showed its sinister and ugly
face in Germany and Italy prior to World War
II. Francos repressive and antidemocratic
fascist administration in Spain survived until
1975. Greece was rocked by coups by fascist
juntas in 1963 and 1974. Bloody wars and
mass slaughters recently took place in the
Balkans because of racial and religious
disputes. Ukraine in the east of Europe is
literally ablaze. There is intense Neo-Nazi
violence against foreign workers and migrants,
and particularly Turks, in Germany. Romanian
citizens are attacked in numerous European
countries.
In speaking of the resurrection of fascism in
Europe, we must not forget the philosophy of
Anders Breivik, the murderer of 77 young
people in Norway. Breivik continues to engage
in far-right propaganda during his trial, where
he employed the Nazi style of salute.
People who have lived together for hundreds
of years must not end up looking at one
another with hatred when they meet on the
streets; this world is big enough to
accommodate people of all views. Extreme
right thinking does not only emerge in the form
of Islamophobia or anti-immigration. Jewish
people also feel that they have to conceal
themselves as much as they can. There is an
intense hatred of and hostility toward Jews
everywhere, and it is not coming strictly from
radicals claiming to act in the name of Islam it
is a rebirth of Europes oldest hatred, the
scourge of anti-Semitism. This is completely
unacceptable.
Separatist movements are another problem in
Europe. There is disturbing Basque
separatism in the Basque region of Spain,
under the influence of ETA terrorism.
Catalonia in Spain also frequently demands to
break away. Such intolerance also manifests
itself in Belgium; the Flemish want to break
away from Belgium. A large part of people in
the Veneto region of Italy are also demanding
independence on the pretext of their countrys
burden of debt. Refusal to share a countrys
troubles in times of hardship is, in my view, a
problem of lovelessness and disloyalty.
Racism is at an alarming level in Europe,
which we think of as having an advanced
democracy and being an alliance of
civilizations and a center of culture.
Unacceptable protests follow one another on
football pitches. Eto from Cameroon and
Prince Boateng of Ghana were exposed to
racist insults in Italy, attracting the attention of
the European press. The Tottenham footballer
Gareth Bale was subjected to similar racist
attacks. Most recently, the Barcelona player
Dani Alves has been the target of racist
attacks. Although these are strongly
condemned, the underlying problem,
lovelessness, needs to be addressed.
We need to wonder, What is this racist
attitude in sports based on? Not so very long
ago, in 1958, black Africans were displayed in
cages in Belgium. Native peoples from
Australia, Africa and the Americas were also
put on humiliating show in places known as
Human Zoos in France, Germany, Italy,
Poland and Spain.
When we look at the Europe of 70 years ago,
we see that the continent was the scene of
endless wars, conflicts and disputes. The
violence finally came to an end during the time
of the European Union, founded in the wake of
the bloodiest conflict of all, World War II, and
which now stands before us as a fine example
of democracy. The EU is a role model for the
world in terms of human rights, law, quality
and the idea of the social state.

Realistically speaking, no single nation has the
power to solve the long-standing dispute
between Palestine and Israel in the Middle
East alone since the latter began a ground
invasion over the weekend against the
Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip following 10 days
of air bombardment.
Israel initiated the invasion on the grounds that
Hamas militants controlling Gaza had not
stopped launching rockets toward Israeli cities.
This comes as Israeli attacks have already
taken the lives of hundreds of civilians.
Yet each nation, in particular the ones located
in the region, has a big role to play in
contributing to a collective effort and enabling
a peaceful settlement between the
Palestinians and Israelis.
The question then arises as to what NATO
member Turkey's contribution can be to a
lasting peace in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict,
a conflict whose tragic consequences are not
only the destruction of human lives but the
destruction of stability.
Despite the facts that Turkey's eastern border
neighbors the Middle East, it has a largely
Muslim population, a secular Constitution, and
above all Ottoman ancestors that ruled the
region for about 400 years, Turkey has never
had an important influence over the
Palestinian-Israeli conflict. This is mainly due
to the fact that since its creation as a state in
1923, Turkey has largely refrained from being
a major player in this neighborhood.
It was only under the current conservative and
Islam-sensitive government that Turkey
focused its attention on the problems in the
Middle East, which has been engulfed in the
turmoil of the Arab uprisings over the last
several years, while pursuing policies to
increase Turkey's influence in the region.
Turkey's foreign policy shift under the current
government is usually described as
neo-Ottomanism, (terminology denied by
Ankara) a Turkish political ideology that
promotes greater political engagement with
regions formerly under the rule of the Ottoman
Empire, its predecessor state.
But the Turkish strategy of influence has
backfired in parallel to Ankara's -- what I will
describe as unrealistic -- policy of reviving
Ottomanism, which neglects the current
realities of the region as well as its limited
influence in the region.
Added to the concern has been presidential
candidate and Turkish Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan's increased use of his
authoritarian instincts in the governance of the
nation, restricting all sorts of freedoms
internally while departing from a rational
foreign policy objective. This policy has already
irritated Turkey's Western allies and Arab
neighbors alike.
Now, after the latest Israeli incursion into
Gaza, Erdogan blasted Israel, Turkey's one
time ally, saying Israel's attacks on Gaza have
surpassed Hitler in barbarism, and that this
nation is committing genocide, among other
things.
But Erdogan's rhetoric does not match his
policies on Israel as they are felt on ground.
He has come under severe criticism in Turkey
and is accused of pursuing a double standard
in his Israeli policies. Opposition parties
accused him of continuing increased trade
relations with Israel behind the scenes, for
instance, behavior that does not match his
severe criticism of Israel.
Kemal Kilidaroglu, chairman of the main
opposition Republican People's Party (CHP),
this past Sunday, claimed that Erdogan's son
Bilal, who is implicated in a high profile
corruption scandal, was allegedly using the
maritime fleet he owns to ship oil for the Israeli
fighter jets and tanks that are attacking the
civilians in Gaza.
Israel's invasion of Gaza has also fallen victim
to Turkey's internal politics ahead of the
presidential election in Turkey that is due to
take place in August and in which Erdogan is
competing against two opposition candidates.
Erdogan, who is leading in the opinion polls for
the presidential race, has increased the dose
of his offensive rhetoric against Israel, in
particular, provoking rural and conservative
Turks against this Jewish state.
Yet his rhetoric does not help with any possible
Turkish contribution to a much-needed
cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. On the
contrary, Turkish policy toward Israel has a
negative impact on the possibility of a lasting
cease-fire to stop Israel's ground incursion.
An important sign of Turkey's waning influence
in the region is that Ban Ki-moon,
secretary-general of the UN, met with several
leaders from the Middle East to facilitate a
cease-fire between Palestinians and Israelis.
He did not include Turkey in his program.
Erdogan has been burning bridges, not just
with Turkey's Western allies, but with many
Arab neighbors also. Under his rule, Ankara
has increasingly been accused of taking sides

Syrian President Bashar Assad sworn in a few
days ago for a third seven-year term. Far from
being victorious, Assad has not yet won the
civil war taking place in Syrian. Indeed, the
international community described his
elections as nothing but a stale joke. Assad's
insistence on running and winning elections
came on the heels of the failure of the Geneva
II talks. During the Geneva II talks, the Syrian
team acted in bad faith. The objective was to
stall the talks to justify holding elections. If
anything, Assad has taken a defiant step to
send a clear message to the United States
and the Arabs that he is there to stay.
Assad's speech on Wednesday reflects that he
is still not in touch with reality. It seems that
the bloody civil war - that has thus far claimed
more than 160,000 lives - has not changed
Assad's attitude. Millions of Syrians have been
displaced within Syrian or refugees in
neighboring countries especially Jordan,
Lebanon and Turkey.
In his inauguration speech, Assad described
all of his opponents "terrorists." He pledged
that he would continue fighting them until total
victory is achieved. He said that there would
no place "for those who are awaiting the end
of the war from outside. It is an illusion. The
political solution comes from the reconciliation
inside." Moreover, Assad did not forget to warn
Turkey and other countries that sided by the
Syrian people's right to rise up against tyranny.
In his words, "Soon we will see that the Arab,
regional and western countries that backed
terrorism will pay the price as well."
He told his audience gathered in his palace,
"they wanted it to be a revolution, but you have
been the real revolutionaries congratulations
on your victory."
If anything, the embattled president tried to
create the illusion that he is fully in charge of
Syria's future. He showed no sign of wanting to
meet the demands of those who called for
genuine democratic reform. Although he talked
about a future political dialogue, his speech
was hard-line. All along, Assad maintained one
line: Protesters against his rule are nothing but
part of external conspiracy to ignite a sectarian
war in Syria. His speech will hardly get him
anywhere in the West and the Arab world. His
claim that his people have already elected him
and that he would start carrying out a pack of
reform rings hollow.
It seems that Assad is not afraid from the
divided international community. He believes
that although the Europe, the US and the
Arabs will not press to dethrone him because
they are uncertain who would succeed him
and this would affect the region as a whole.
And of course, Assad has learnt the West see
eye to eye with him on the issue of terrorism, a
theme that he played up in his speech. His
speech is about hardnosed evaluation of the
inability of the international community to
make any difference in the long-standing
conflict. Indeed, all sanctions imposed on Syria
by western powers have not yet been effective
or enough to persuade Assad to change
course.
Not surprisingly, Assad's speech has left no
hope for the revolutionaries. In other words,
Assad offered no concrete concessions to
meet the demand of revolutionaries who would
most likely accept nothing less than ousting
Assad. But also it has hardly help changing the
situation. In essence, his lengthy speech has
offered nothing to break the cycle of violence.
Equally important, his speech may push
western countries to step up pressures on
Assad and regional supporters.
In a nutshell, the speech proved beyond doubt
that Assad was not in touch with reality.
Addressing an adulatory Parliament and
scores of loyalists on Wednesday, Assad
thought he was a strong leader who spoke
from a position of strength. It remains to be
seen whether his words of confidence are not
misplaced. He probably needs to be reminded
that his regime does not control all of Syria
and that his military solution can no longer
work amid the falling apart of Syria. Also his
speech has convinced observers that if
unchecked Assad will be a key part of the
problem rather than being part of the solution.

The latest maniacal rampage of Israel in Gaza
has unfolded not just against the background
of the abortive US-led peace talks but also of
an egregious outpouring of Zionist
self-congratulation.
As the "Arab Spring" gave way to baleful
developments across much of the Middle East,
Zionist commentators indulged in an orgy of
gloating. Their barely disguised racist
message to the West was: "Now you see what
our neighbors are really like. How did anybody
ever imagine that solving the Palestine-Israel
conflict was the key to bringing peace and
stability to the wider region?"
Some critics of the Jewish state have always
maintained that to see the Arab world plunged
in internecine conflict was the cherished goal
of the Zionist establishment. Their belief is that
Zionist ideologues in Tel Aviv and Washington
lobbied hard for the 2003 invasion of Iraq with
precisely this objective in mind. However this
may be, the current disarray of the Middle East
is plainly not altogether displeasing to the sort
of smug, myopic Zionists who boast that Israel
is the "villa in the jungle."
If western media reaction to the current Gaza
offensive has been muted, it is partly because
this self-serving Zionist narrative chimes with
public fatigue, a prevailing reluctance to think
about foreign affairs. Certainly there is a
growing western conviction following the
debacles of the interventions in Afghanistan
and Iraq that the problems of the Arab and
Muslim worlds defy understanding, let alone
solution. At the same time, the news media
are palpably struggling to muster the
resources to cover a geopolitical scene
seething with crisis to an extent not seen in
many decades.
Concerning Gaza, you could be forgiven for
thinking that the London-based media have
been only too ready to reflect the present
isolationist mood - thereby also gratifying
Zionist sentiment. On the weekend of 12 July
2014, with Palestinian casualties escalating
rapidly, the front page of the Guardian
newspaper was devoid of any reference to
Gaza - though of course there was coverage
inside. Meanwhile, BBC news bulletins were
leading with former Archbishop of Canterbury
George Carey's endorsement of "assisted
dying." Whether terminally ill Britons should
enjoy the right to die was apparently more
newsworthy than the plight of Gazan children
who were being robbed of the right to live.
Even when the Palestine-Israel conflict is
discussed on the BBC, it is often in terms as
stale as they are discredited. In a radio
discussion with the American diplomat, Dennis
Ross, the veteran BBC broadcaster, John
Humphrys, remarked that everybody
acknowledges that in the end there is no
alternative to a "two state solution." Humphrys
spoke as if unaware that even among
inveterate supporters of the "two state
solution" there are now grave doubts, thanks
to endless illegal settlement building by Israel
in the West Bank, as to its viability. Where
Palestine is at issue, the Israel-friendly BBC
nowadays appears a lobotomized
organization.
Though the BBC may be more culpable than
most, the mainstream media in the UK and US
operate as though the debate about
Palestine-Israel raging in alternative
Anglophone media is not happening. Last
week, in an online polemic, the American
Jewish peace activist and writer, Jeff Halper,
made a compelling case that Israel's agenda
in Gaza is to communicate to all its
inhabitants, not just Hamas, the stark
message: "Submit, leave, or die." His verdict
was echoed by the heroically heretical Israeli
columnist Gideon Levy. It is indefensible that
these distinguished commentators - whose
opinions are informed by years of observation
and reflection - are shunned by leading print
and broadcast media.
The cynical Zionist calculation is perhaps that
so long as such voices seldom reach the wider
public they are effectively irrelevant.
Increasingly, politically engaged persons resort
to new online forums of debate, while millions
more, jaded about the Middle East though they
may be, behold the latest grisly images from
Gaza and form their own views about the
legitimacy of Israel's actions.
Forever smearing those who are
"de-legitimizing" Israel, Zionists fail to notice
how their vaunted "villa in the jungle" is
de-legitimizing itself.

The hidden treasures
By: Bernard Moras
Every now and then we hear of people
searching for hidden treasures and all the
measures people employ to discover them.
Some eccentrics and tricksters take the
gullible to any extent either for money or power
or a taste for the esoteric flights of fancy.
There are also people who snoop in the wake
of such searchers trying to find out if it were a
ploy to put off those on their trail to unearth
their ill-gotten goods. We also hear of people
who get maddened by the lure of gold and
hunt for the precious metal in whichever place
it is rumoured to be found.
For them it does not matter if it were in an
inaccessible place fraught with untold dangers;
because all that attracts them is the gold that
is to be found.
They would spend their time and energy in
finding it and dream of making it big. Such
desires can get hold of any person, in
whatever state of life he may be and he would
have any number of excuses to tell you why he
is searching for it.
He may even say that he is not seeking it for
himself but for his family or he may even say
that he is doing it for the poor. In such cases
they do not even mind trying to bribe God
himself!
Jesus has also spoken of such
treasure-seekers and he says: where your
treasure is there also your heart is! What do
you constantly think of? Is it power or success
at all cost? Then your treasure is precisely in
that.
Or are your constant thought only of sex and
gratification of sex or drug abuse seeking to
get a feeling of being on high?
Then that kind of selfishness is your treasure.
We know all these do not last long. The power
you may enjoy today may be lost tomorrow
and somebody else has it.
Your bodily strength will wane and you
become a stumbling cripple in a short time and
the time to quit these mortal shackles may not
be far away? Then what are you going to do?
Has all your dreams come to an end? Should
you change tracks and run elsewhere or
change tackles and fish elsewhere?
Again Jesus says: do not try to store up your
treasures where robbers may rob you and
leave you empty handed or stash your
treasures in a place where your treasure is
eaten up by rust, dust, moth or agents that
corrupt material things.
Rather you should gather up your treasures in
heaven where no robbers can rob and where
no corruption can enter in.
Let your treasures be rooted in God who is
permanent and never ending. He says that
whatever good you do to the least ones you
did it to him and your reward is assured.
The assurance is given by God and for that
assurance we do not even need any
guarantee because the guarantee is God
himself who is Truth!

Whatever the cause, one thing we must take
note of is that a country like ours doesnt have
the means for hosting endless dinners and

reduce the pressure on parents in their dotage

Clearly nervous about the possible revelations
contained in former foreign minister Natwar
Singhs forthcoming autobiography, Congress
president Sonia Gandhi and her daughter
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are learnt to have
dropped in on him recently for what was
ostensibly described as a courtesy call.
However, the real purpose was to prod Mr
Singh into omitting any embarrassing details
about the Gandhi family. Mrs Gandhi has
reason to be worried. After all, Mr Singh has
had a long and close association with the
Gandhis, having done a stint in the Prime
Ministers Office during Indira Gandhis regime
and as a minister in Rajiv Gandhis Cabinet.
He was also Mrs Sonia Gandhis key adviser,
a member of the Congress Working
Committee and a minister in the UPA-1
government. He was stripped of his ministry
after he fell from grace when his name
surfaced in the oil-for-food scam. Extremely
bitter over the treatment meted out to him, it is
widely expected that Mr Singhs book, One
Life is Not Enough, could stir up trouble for the
already-beleaguered Gandhi family. While Mrs
Gandhi and Ms Vadra have done their bit to
mend their relations with the former family
insider, Mr Singhs publishers are also said to
be scanning the contents carefully to avoid any
trouble.
The Bharatiya Janata Party and its alliance
partner, the Akali Dal, are locked in a bitter
political battle with the Aam Admi Party, but
Bhagwant Mann, AAP Lok Sabha member
from Sangrur, makes no bones about his
admiration for finance and defence minister
Arun Jaitley. A comedian-turned-politician, Mr
Mann has a way with words and he gave
ample demonstration of his skills when he ran
into Mr Jaitley recently. Mr Mann first
showered praise on Mr Jaitley, even going to
the extent of saying that he considered the
BJP minister as his political guru, and then
trained his guns at the Akali Dals first family:
Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal
and his son Sukhbir Badal. An embarrassed
Mr Jaitley listened in silence as Mr Mann
accused the Badals of blanking out his
comedy shows from the state-controlled cable
network in Punjab and then went on to blame
the BJPs ally for Mr Jaitleys defeat in
Amritsar. But dont worry, you have been well
rewarded by Modi you lost to a former Army
officer but look, the Prime Minister has now
made you the boss of the entire Army, Mr
Mann remarked. Mr Jaitley made a hurried exit
before word went around that he was
encouraging the Akali Dal-baiter.
When the Rajya Sabha was plunged into
chaos last week over the Oppositions demand
for a discussion on the escalating violence
between Israel and Palestine, external affairs
minister Sushma Swaraj had refused on the
plea that any discourteous comments made in
Parliament could have an adverse impact on
Indias relations with the two countries. It so
happens that it was not the Israel-Palestine
conflict but the conflict within the Bharatiya
Janata Party that was the root cause of the
standoff between the Opposition and the
government. Ms Swaraj was apparently miffed
that junior parliamentary affairs minister
Prakash Javadekar had agreed to list the
discussion without consulting her first. Finance
minister Arun Jaitley, who is also the Rajya
Sabha leader, was seen as a prime suspect
given the history of rivalry between him and
and Ms Swaraj. Although Ms Swaraj stood
steadfast on her decision, she had to give in
eventually after Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid
Ansari rejected her request to cancel the
discussion. Her case was further weakened by
the declaration adopted by Brics leaders,
including Prime Minister Narendra Modi,
expressing concern over the escalating
violence in West Asia and even asking Israel
not to construct settlements in the occupied
Palestinian territories.
Over the past decade that the BJP was in
Opposition, its former finance minister
Yashwant Sinha hardly got an opportunity to
open the debate on the Union Budget for his
party in Parliament. He was invariably beaten
to it by BJP veteran Murli Manohar Joshi. So it
was a matter of great satisfaction when his
son Jayant Sinha, first-time MP, was picked to
initiate the debate on the Budget last week.
The young Sinha did his father proud as it was
unanimously acknowledged across the political
spectrum that the IIT and Harvard-educated
former investment banker was well-acquainted
with the subject. The BJP was naturally thrilled
at having discovered a new star from among
its large batch of newcomers. Finance minister
Arun Jailtey even called up Mr Yashwant
Sinha to tell him, Your son has achieved what
you could not in all these years initiate the
Budget debate. Sinha senior was not
complaining.
Narendra Modi has discovered that both his
offices in South Block and in Parliament
House, have a major problem. While the
bathroom attached to the office in Parliament
often runs out of water, the one in the PMO is
so designed that a person has to twist and
contort himself to enter it. No wonder former
Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee preferred
to work out of his 7, Race Course Road office.

An english wedding
By: KHIZR IMRAN TAJAMMUL
About a week ago, I was captive audience to
an all-infant battle on board a Pakistan
International Airlines (PIA) flight to
Manchester. The wailing began before we took
off from Lahore, it continued through the
course of the flight, and sometimes still echoes
in my head. After seven long hours, I realized I
had another four hours ahead of me to
Marlborough College, the wedding venue.
In the four hours en route to Marlborough, I
slipped in and out of oblivion to make the odd
conversation with Pip the brides friend from
Yorkshire who volunteered to fetch me en
route to the wedding. By the time I made my
way out of the airport it was clear we would
miss the service at the Chapel but like a good
host Pip reassured me, all the fun begins
beyond the vows.
I was particularly intrigued when Pip told me
he had traveled across the globe but had
never been to London. He said, London is all
grey and dirty and mechanical and I prefer the
vast, charming expanses in the North of
England. As we drove by green fields, and the
vast expanses of picturesque farm land, I
could imagine Pip basking in the sun, enjoying
the suburban life, away from the
compartmentalized existence most
professionals share in London.
Much to our mutual delight, Marlborough was
nothing like London. The setting was quaint;
brick stones that housed shops but without any
of the modern day neon signs or intrusively
large, overshadowing billboards. The Masters
Lodge, where the brides father, the
Headmaster of Marlborough College worked
and lived, was a grand house of several
stories looking onto lush gardens on two sides.
The lovely sit down wedding dinner and dance
was organized in an off white marquee set up
in the lawn.
The bride and groom were both very much
English but had met and worked in Pakistan
together.
When I arrived at my table, my seat was
reserved amongst guests I had not yet
interacted with, which led to some wonderful
conversations. In fact, I think out of the
hundred odd guests at the wedding, I was able
to converse with more than half the people.
This was in sharp contrast to a Pakistani
wedding where socializing is somewhat
contained within a coterie of like minded, same
aged associates. Also, the fact that thousands
attend a single wedding gathering makes it
humanly impossible to meet everyone.
In England, the free breeze and free
conversation flowed endlessly right until the
early hours of morning the next day. We
danced in the backdrop of a live band, and as
we revelled into the wee hours, some of us
returned to a quiet and rather comfortable
marquee to settle in for the night.
Apart from the incredible display of hospitality,
there were many things that I enjoyed about
my first English wedding. The celebration
lasted over a day, and amongst only the
dearest and nearest; a reasonable number of
friends and relatives that the bride and groom
were fully able to share their beautiful
beginning with.
Short. Sweet. Simple.
Conversely, in Pakistan, weddings sprawl over
weeks like a marathon celebration. For guests
who are visiting from out of town or are
anything short of professional athletes,
chances are theyll fall ill before the main
events at the fag end of the celebration. Just
to list the events, we have the Engagement
Party (Baat Pakki), numerous dance practices,
multiple dholkis (sing and dance sessions), the
mehndi (customs and dance), the baraat &
shaadi (Wedding), the nikah (to make it
official) and the valima (to celebrate
consummation!). Recounting the events alone,
is an ordeal.
Today, millions of Pakistanis continue to
bleach their brown selves in a quest to find
better prospects. Indeed, the colonial legacy of
equating fair skin with superiority still pervades
our culture. In the sea of cultural crossovers
between the people of the subcontinent and
those who governed them, representing the
commonwealth, the simplicity, the charm and
the intimacy of a private English wedding was
something that failed to leave an imprint on the
subcontinent.

A lost generation
By: Huma Yousuf
FORMER prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani
last week said that the IDPs from Waziristan
should be recognised as making sacrifices for
Pakistans future. Their sacrifices are no doubt
great: almost a million people have been
displaced only to find themselves unwelcome
in Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan. Few among
the industrial elite have taken up the IDPs
cause, and the focus remains on vaccinating
and registering them so that they dont spread
disease or terror throughout the country. No
wonder many on social media channels have
recast the acronym to stand for internally
disowned people.
The relative apathy towards IDPs continues
despite the fact that the media regularly
highlights their plight. Tragic tales abound of
homes and farms abandoned, fortunes lost,
businesses closed, a tribal economy disrupted.
Unfortunately, the voices of women and
children, who comprise 75pc of the IDPs, are
less heard owing to cultural reasons. But it is
essential to learn more about the experience
of IDPs, particularly children, because
understanding their troubles is key to
evaluating whether their sacrifices today really
will boost Pakistans future.
In the chaos of accommodating the IDPs,
government officials have not considered the
long-term impact for FATA of having a
generation of children endure the shocks of
violence and upheaval. A new paper by Tahir
Andrabi, Benjamin Daniels and others serves
as a warning against the failure to do so.
In Can Extreme Shocks to Children be
Mitigated?, the authors assess the recovery in
terms of physical development and
educational attainment of children who
survived the devastating earthquake in
northern Pakistan in 2005. They find that
infrastructure, consumption and school
enrolment in the affected areas recovered,
largely thanks to the influx of aid, to levels
comparable with areas farther away from the
fault line.
But children who were in the womb through
the age of three at the time of the earthquake
fare poorly in terms of physical development
and education. According to the paper, those
who were in the womb or younger than three
years at the time of the earthquake are
markedly shorter in height than children who
have not experienced a major early life shock.
The physical development of children older
than three at the time of the earthquake is not
found to be noticeably worse, but they are
found to lag in terms of educational
achievement, with lower test scores and a
cognitive gap equivalent to two years of
learning.
Development and education indicators for
young IDPs are likely to be equally poor, if not
worse, owing to the prolonged nature of the
shock they are enduring (the Talibans violent
regime, displacement, and survival in camps
or unfamiliar urban environments). Unlike
earthquake-affected children, young IDPs
are also faced with additional challenges
imposed by the Taliban regime for example,
a higher incidence of polio owing to the TTPs
ban on vaccinations.
In todays political and policy rhetoric,
concerns about young IDPs are almost
exclusively tied to fears of their being
radicalised. This fear is exacerbated by the
fact that banned organisations swoop down on
disaster-affected communities and offer relief
services as the first step toward radicalisation
and recruitment. It is also fuelled by the
complex picture of life under the Taliban that
the IDPs paint: among tales of atrocities are
descriptions of TTP fighters as good
customers, providers of justice, and tolerant
towards religious minorities.
But the paper by Andrabi et al should serve as
a reminder that radicalisation is not the
greatest challenge young IDPs will face. They
are likely to suffer both in terms of their
physical and educational development. Beset
with these disadvantages, they will have to
survive in their adopted homes, primarily in
Pakistans large, under-resourced and brutally
competitive cities, where their lives will be
defined by exclusion, ethnic resentment and a
lack of opportunities.
The papers findings offer some insights into
polices that might avert this outcome. Children
whose mothers had completed primary
education did not demonstrate the educational
recovery gap (though their physical
development was affected). Household
compensation following a large shock was
also found to mitigate cognitive consequences.
This suggests that the government should
urgently devise and implement polices to
ensure that young IDPs are well nourished and
able to resume their education, that their
mothers are cared for and educated, and their
families compensated and allowed to return
home to stable environments.
Critiques of the plight of IDPs are too often
understood to be a condemnation of the
military operation. But these are separate
issues. The focus now should be on
addressing the needs of the IDPs to mitigate
the impact of the shock of upheaval, and
ensure that the sacrifices of a generation of
youngsters truly brighten Pakistans future,
rather than further dim its prospects.

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama on
Monday signed an executive order banning
workplace discrimination against millions of
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
employees of federal contractors and the
federal government.
The executive order has two parts: It makes it
illegal to fire or harass employees of federal
contractors based on their sexual orientation or
gender identity, and it explicitly bans
discrimination against transgender employees
of the federal government. The part targeting
federal contractors affects 24,000 companies
employing roughly 28 million workers, or about
one-fifth of the nation's workforce.
"America's federal contracts should not
subsidize discrimination against the American
people," Obama said during remarks at the
White House just before signing the order. "I'm
going to do what I can with the authority I have
to act."
To the relief of the LGBT community, Obama
did not include a sweeping religious exemption
in the executive order -- something the
community feared could happen in the wake of
last month's Supreme Court ruling in the
Hobby Lobby case.
New York - Two of the largest non-profit
immigration service groups in the United
States will shut down after being accused of
defrauding thousands of clients, New York
Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said on
Monday.

Instead, Obama simply added the categories
of sexual orientation and gender identity to an
existing executive order that protects
employees of federal contractors from
discrimination based on race, color, religion,
sex or national origin. President George W.
Bush amended that executive order in 2002 to
allow religiously affiliated federal contractors to
prioritize hiring employees of their particular
religion, however, and Obama is keeping that
language intact.
It is still legal in 32 states to fire or harass
someone at work for being LGBT. Congress
could remedy that by passing the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act, which already passed
the Senate. But Speaker John Boehner
(R-Ohio) has refused to bring the bill up for a
vote in the House.
Immigrants Foundation within two years,
Schneiderman said. Their remaining assets of
$2.2 million would be used to provide
restitution to clients.
Schneiderman's predecessor, now-Governor
Andrew Cuomo, filed a lawsuit in 2010 against
the groups and Edward Juarez, their president.
Obama calls for
immediate ceasefire as
Gaza toll tops 500
WASHINGTON/GAZA CITY - US Secretary of
State John Kerry is to push for an immediate
ceasefire in Gaza when he arrives later
Monday in Cairo, President Obama said.
Obama also said that while Israel has the right
to defend itself against a barrage of Hamas
rockets, Washington has serious concerns
about the rising number of Palestinian civilian
deaths and the loss of Israeli lives.
That is why it now has to be our focus and the
focus of the international community to bring
about a ceasefire that ends the fighting and
that can stop the deaths of innocent civilians,
both in Gaza and in Israel, he said.
Kerry was headed to Egypt, which has been a
mediator in past Israel-Palestinian conflicts
and has taken the lead in trying to broker a
truce between Israel and its Islamist foe
Hamas, which dominates the Gaza Strip.
The two-week conflict has dramatically
escalated in recent days, with Israeli ground
forces pushing into Gaza, where the
Palestinian death toll stood at 548 by Monday.
Obama noted that Israel had already done
significant damage to Hamas's terrorist
infrastructure in Gaza.
The work will not be easy, Obama said of
efforts to broker a ceasefire.
Obviously, there are enormous passions
involved in this, and some very difficult
strategic issues involved, the president
added, in a statement delivered from the
White House.
