Mr. Mark Dinkus
Caterday Photographic Studio
245 Dearborn Park Road
Chicago, Il 60610

Dear Mr. Dinkus:

Thank you for trusting your business to McCall Southern. I will be providing the network
enterprise solution portion of this project for your company. I have several years experience
designing and installing networks for various size companies and have both Network+ and
Security+ certifications. Additionally I have 3 years working as a system administrator for a
large German Internet Service provider and I served in the U.S. Army implementing satellite
communications and data networks across multiple regions and under various conditions.

I am looking forward to using my expertise in virtual wide area networks to develop a solution
that leverages current trends in technology such as software defined networking, new high speed
wireless standards, and cloud storage, to create a solution that is both scalable and maintainable
as your business grows.

ASSIGNMENT 1 3

Please feel free to contact me at McCall Southern so that we can discuss this further.

Yours truly,

Kris Trinidad

ASSIGNMENT 1 6

Part 3: Field Analysis of Network Information Technology

There have been several key trends in networking over the last year or so. SDN (Software
Defined Networking) and BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) havent been the only recent
developments, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and an even stronger push towards IPv6 have contributed
towards the Internet of Things as more and more devices are able to access the internet. The
skills needed to implement these technologies have, on the other hand, become obscured by a
myriad of certifications and educational or experience requirements.
Software defined networking looks to create a far more agile and available networking
approach and is the next evolution beyond cloud storage. With Cisco as a major contributor to
the open source effort OpenDaylight, Cisco ACI or Application Centric Infrastructure is pushing
this idea forward with hardware able to implement it. Cisco is also putting a great deal of funding
into security as well; especially firewall technologies, to protect these SDN implementations.
The ability for an organization to invest in an SDN service lets it invest those dollars that would
normally be spent on hardware and its administration on a more flexible model allowing for
almost infinite scalability and network accessibility. The first attempts at SDN have been
implemented via Amazons EC2 or elastic compute cloud and Microsoft Windows Azure, and the
Google Compute Engine. With a cloud service for storage, an EC2 implementation for a high
availability server or servers, the only hardware a business really needs are the devices and
workstations to make their enterprise successful. This is a huge advantage for risk management
and disaster recovery should your office space be compromised by fire or some other problem,
all your important files and programs can be accessed from anywhere.
ASSIGNMENT 1 7

Bring your own device has gained a great deal of traction lately especially with all the
tablets and smart phone devices on the market. Many businesses can now stay connected without
having large investments in hardware workstations by allowing employees to BYOD to work
provided they meet the compatibility of company software and can use simple security. This also
lets the company scale up or down its hardware based on its needs without having to change
every employees workstation as well. The huge advantage of these multi use devices can be
leveraged easily especially when combined with SDN. This untethers salesmen from an office to
meet with clients whenever and where ever as needed. It also allows workers to feel far more
comfortable with learning the software and systems that make up the backbone of the business.
Should disaster strike, the majority of your workstation hardware is remote and safe. If the power
goes out and you still have a charge in your iPad, the business keeps on running.
The glue that will make this all work is the new 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard. As Kerner
(2014) says, The promise of 802.11ac is bandwidth of 1 Gbps and perhaps even higher.
Combine this with wireless cellphone 4G or better technology coming online soon and your
business can be just a faade while your workers can be anywhere around the country. Add to
this new standard the push for full implementation of IPv6 and there will be no reason to use the
old antique methods of Cat 5 cable drops, daisy chained power strips, work cubicles and sudden
server down time.
There was a time when high school drop outs were writing programs and designing
hardware for the NASA space program, today the aspiring network design engineer has far more
hurdles to jump. Job descriptions can appear to be total gibberish to the uninitiated entry level
searcher. For example a position focusing on designing a secure global network might require
experience in MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) and possibly DWDM (Dense wavelength
ASSIGNMENT 1 8

division multiplexing) technologies as well as strong skills with BGP (Border Gateway
Protocol). They may also want ASA (Cisco Adaptive Security Appliance), ACS/ISE (Cisco
Secure Access Control System and Identity Service Engine) and TACACS+ (Terminal Access
Controller Access-Control System +) authentication experience, and of course a CCNP/CCDP
(Cisco Certified Network Professional and Cisco Certified Design Professional), CCIE (Cisco
Certified Internetwork Expert) certification would be mentioned as a plus. Knowing what all
these acronyms are is almost as big a hurdle as getting experience dealing with them or affording
the certifications they represent. While it is normal for industry insiders to put up road blocks to
entry and to make money certifying those that come after, let us hope this trend toward
certifications and fees doesnt become a barrier to those very types of people who invented those
technologies to begin with.
These trends towards SDN (Software Defined Networking) , BYOD (Bring Your Own
Device) , the 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard , and the push towards full IPv6 implementation while not
the only trends in networking, will allow even more flexibility and a tremendous growth in
enterprise networking solutions. The trend in certification will hopefully bring even more skilled
people to the field to implement and improve these technologies and not become a barrier to
entry.
