Maitreya School
Maitreya School is one of a number of
social welfare projects of Root Institute
for Wisdom Culture, a Centre of Tibetan
Buddhism under the auspices and
guidance of a highly regarded Tibetan
lama, Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche.
The school provides free education for local, impoverished children as well as free
medical and dental care and transport to and from school.
The school opened in 2012 with an initial intake of around 60 children. This
year, the number of children has risen to 169. There are now six classes,
ranging from Pre-Kindergarden to Class 3, with eight, full-time teachers
including the Principal. Our subjects include Mathematics, English, Hindi,
General Knowledge, Physical Education, Yoga, Science, Computer Classes
and Environmental Studies. We have a large area for arts crafts and music.

The School incorporates the universal, Buddhist

principles of loving kindness, compassion and the
responsibility of the welfare of others.
We have an attendant nurse and the children receive medical
treatment when required, at our Shakyamuni Clinic. Dental
treatment is also available for all the kids.
The children are
exceptionally happy to
be at Maitreya School
and they are fortunate.
At enrolment time,
there were around
30 times the number
of applications from
children wishing to
attend the school, than
places available.

A main part of the vision for the school is to instill universal, principles of
loving kindness and compassion. As an initial step towards this aim, we
have introduced a full period
each day, for each class,
teaching these principles. We
are in the process of organising
a translation into English and
Hindi, of extracts from the
complete set of Tibetan readers
which form the Buddhism
curriculum in Tibetan schools.
These will then constitute the
main material for our Buddhist
classes.

Where your money goes

...to purchase books and all educational materials, a school uniform
and sweater, a nutritious snack every day, plus a portion of the
general expenses, such as teachers salaries, utilities, transport and
maintenance costs.
