Now on Nurses:
DIY comes to A&E
On the urology ward dedication is what it takes
00:40:00 IN-VISION PETE THOMAS
Prior to my holiday, I would hae walked out o! the "o#$
00:44:00 VOICE-OVER NARRATOR
And old !riends gather to say good#ye to midwi!e %o$
00:47:00 NURSES STING
00:51:00 IN-VISION MIKE PETERS
I&e come to !i' your head(
00:54:00 VOICE-OVER NARRATOR
It&s the #eginning o! another shi!t at A&E !or )ta!! Nurse
*ike Peters and he&s got a head in"ury to deal with
01:00:00 IN-VISION MIKE PETERS
+his ,oor gentleman has !allen and #um,ed his head, and
he&s got a little cut that we&re going to sta,le closed !or
him$
01:08:00 VOICE-OVER NARRATOR
)ome head wounds can #e sta,led rather than sutured -
it&s .uick, clean and doesn&t need local anaesthetic$ +his
,atient in"ured his head while hammering in !ence ,osts$
01:19:00 IN-VISION OUT-OF-VISION MIKE PETERS
I&m "ust going to se,arate the skin in cases like this so that
I can see how !ar the cut goes, #ecause some ,eo,le can
hae .uite a nasty cut, and when the edges o! the skin get
,ressed together, you can&t actually see where it ends$
You can hardly see the "oins, sir( Oh wonder!ul$
Now !or the sta,le gun two little ,rongs that come
!orward, to ,ut the sta,le into the skin$
/hat we do is we start in the middle o! the wound$ It&s
going to hurt a little #it$ 0ere we go: one, two, three and
!inally !our$
1y holding the wound together, that&ll sto, it #leeding$
/as that too #ad2 Not #ad at all, really$ It&s sur,rising
what you can do to ,eo,le without it hurting too #adly
OUT-OF-VISION PATIENTS FRIEN
)titches used to hurt, didn&t they2
IN-VISION MIKE PETERS
Yes$ )titches hurt a lot more in a lot o! ways, #ecause you
hae to hae a local anaesthetic, and that stings, it&s like
haing a #ee sting$ And you&re almost #etter not to hae
an anaesthetic !or a small wound$
IN-VISION MIKE PETERS
/ell that&s that done, we&ll "ust take this o!! the #ack o!
your hand, and then you can go home$
02:43:00 VOICE-OVER NARRATOR
+he ,atient will #e #ack in a !ew days to hae the sta,les
remoed$
02:49:00 IN-VISION PATIENTS FRIEN
I! we&re ,re,ared !or a three hour wait (
IN-VISION MIKE PETERS
You know what it&s like$ You could read two o! those
#ooks, couldn&t you, in that time2
02:53:00 IN-VISION PATIENT
Pass my a,ologies on to the Doctors !or #eing grum,y,
and a little con!used earlier on
IN-VISION MIKE PETERS
Yes, i! you were grum,y I&ll certainly do that$
+ake care, now$ All the #est$ 1ye #ye$
03:11:00 VOICE-OVER NARRATOR
At the neonatal intensie care unit, community midwi!e
%o Arkwright ,ays a isit to the ,roud mum o! tri, lets
03:20:00 IN-VISION !O ARK"RIGHT
0i %ulie, how are you2 1rilliant(
03:25:00 VOICE-OVER NARRATOR
%ulie was carrying nearly twele ,ounds o! #a#ies until
3iam 4 who was the heaiest at !our ,ounds nine and a
hal! ounces - and his sisters 0arriet and 5race were
deliered #y caesarian section$ %o assisted at the #irth

+hey were a little ,remature #ut they&re doing !ine$
03:42:00 OUT-OF-VISION !O ARK"RIGHT
)o, has Daddy #een doing lots o! na,,y changing2
OUT-OF-VISION MUM
Oh, he&s done more than me(
OUT-OF-VISION !O ARK"RIGHT
And they didn&t hae to hae any hel, with their
#reathing, or +hey&e taken straight to !eeding
they&re not going to #e in ),ecial 6are !or ery long at all,
are they2
OUT-OF-VISION MUM
+hey&e done ery well #ut I don&t know, I was told it
may #e until they&re the e.uialent o! !ull4term, which
would #e the middle o! %uly$
IN-VISION !O ARK"RIGHT
/ell, yes, I think they say that as a guide$ And then
anything earlier is a #onus isn&t it2 1ut the way they&re
going, "ust take it as it comes and he&s great$
+hey&re all deelo, ing their own little indiidual
characteristics already, aren&t they2
)o, the e',ert na,,y changer2(
IN-VISION A
No I&m not( I&e done it once or twice I think$
Do you think he&s a #it wi!!y - that&s ,ro#a#ly what it is
isn&t it2
04:37:00 IN-VISION A
*y ,rimary concern is !or %ulie, rather than !or the
#a#ies, initially$ 1ecause %ulie&s #een with me !or twenty4
odd years, you know, we&e grown u, together more or
less, and as such I&d #e lost without her$ )o, when she
was !eeling !aint, and eerything, I was looking u, at the
monitors and you know, heart #eats dro,,ing and one
thing and another, and "ust asking a !ew .uestions$ 1ut it
was good, #ecause eery#ody had e',lained to us what
was going to ha,,en, and you know, #a#y num#er one is
coming and to actually look u, and see this #a#y was
un#eliea#le, "ust indescri#a#le, really$
05:09:00 VOICE-OVER NARRATOR
Dad Edward was .uite oerwhelmed #y the deliery o!
his large, new !amily$
05:13:00 VOICE-OVER A
7rom my ,oint o! iew as well, something that I will
always cherish is #eing a#le to take a camera in with us,
and to take a ,icture o! the #a#ies within seconds, you
know, when they had only "ust #een #orn$ /e&e #een
through low ,oints when we&e tried !or children, and it&s
not worked$ And this is the highest ,oint o! our lies$
3ast night, when we were sat in here, %ulie, mysel!, and
%ulie&s mum, and we had the three children with us, it was
"ust a moment that we thought we would neer, eer see$
It was "ust un#eliea#le$
05:50:00 NURSES STING
05:55:00 VOICE-OVER NARRATOR
Pete +homas is a charge nurse and manages a surgical
urology ward where men with urinary and im,otence
,ro#lems are dealt with as well as ,rostate cancer$
Nursing wasn&t the career he&d !irst thought a#out
0#:0#:00 IN-VISION VOICE-OVER PETE THOMAS
I really wanted to teach the dea! and dum#, or to #e a et$
*y mother was su!!ering !rom a chronic illness, so I was
used to ill4health around me$ And when one o! my !riends
at school was going o!! to #e a nurse, she had the
,ros,ectus, and I "ust ha,,ened to hae a read o! it and
a,,lied$ )o, it was "ust on a whim, really$
Each ward is ery di!!erent, eery#ody is an indiidual$
And the management structure is ery democratic$ I&m
ery much into the hollistic kind o! a,,roach to the
deliery o! care$ +he ,atient then gets inoled with their
own care$ /e need to know what they can do, and the
#its they can&t do, the nurse will do$ 1ecause they&e
come into hos, ital, it doesn&t mean they hae to leae
their #rains outside on the doorste,, they can think !or
themseles, they can make decisions$ And we encourage
them to make these decisions, we gie them in!ormation
and they can make an in!ormed consent o! what they can
and cannot do - which I think is ery im,ortant$
07:13:00 IN-VISION VOICE-OVER PETE THOMAS
%o Pu#lic likes us in the main$ 8ntil we&e done
something to u,set them, and then we might get criticised$
1ut on the whole, I think that the serice what we o!!er is
ery good$
07:25:00 IN-VISION PETE THOMAS
You&e got a stitch there, and a stitch there$ I&m going to
clean around there, and then what I want you to do you
know when you&re trying to ,o, your ears on an
aero,lane
07:38:00 VOICE-OVER PETE THOMAS
Each day in hos, ital is ery di!!erent$ )o, we might hae
9: emergency admissions today, and tomorrow we might
hae ;::$ And then we do a "uggling act, and ,rioritise
the routine ,atients that need to come in, #ut then we hae
to gie our ,riorities to the emergencies$ And I think i!
you kee, ,atients in!ormed o! what&s going on, they
understand more$ /e&re as disa,,ointed !or the ,erson
that can&t get into hos, ital as what they are$ Patient
comes in, the money !ollows the ,atient so it&s in our
interests that we get routine ,atients in, as much it is to
get emergency ,atients in, #ut ,eo,le must acce,t there&s
not enough #eds, and this in the !uture might alter$
08:28:00 OUT-OF-VISION PETE THOMAS
As you can see, I think I&e done a ,ig&s ear o! it(
08:33:00 IN-VISION PETE THOMAS
Prior to my holiday, I would hae walked out o! the "o#,
there and then$ It has a lot o! stress !actors, and when that
clicks in, it&s ery di!!icult to motiate yoursel!, and you
can #ecome !airly negatie$ 1ut, I won&t let that inter!ere
with the care that&s #eing o!!ered on the ward, or my
e',ertise$ At the end o! the day, you know you&re caring
!or ,atients and their well#eing and their sa!ety, and this is
in the #ack o! the mind$ And when you !eel you&re losing
the ,lot, and de4motiation comes in, more stress leels,
and you get !airly angry, and you "ust don&t want to ,lay
anymore, you don&t want to do this thing anymore
09:20:00 IN-VISION PETE THOMAS
And his wi!e&s got that "o#, so that she can sit and talk to
him and hold his hand wont she$ 1e loe#irds again$
09:32:00 IN-VISION !O ARK"RIGHT
/hat time did you ring me(2
09:33:00 VOICE-OVER NARRATOR
It&s lunchtime and %o is meeting #est !riend <icky to share

09:40:00 IN-VISION !O ARK"RIGHT
I had to ,hone some#ody, and I didn&t want to tell my

eerything
09:47:00 VOICE-OVER NARRATOR
It&s a #it o! a #om#shell !or <icky that %o&s acce,ted a "o#
so !ar away$
09:53:00 IN-VISION VICK$
/hat are the ,ro&s and con&s o! going out there, you
know2
IN-VISION OUT-OF-VISION !O ARK"RIGHT
It&s a#out what I like: a#out low interention, you know,
well actually no interention$ It&s a #irth centre where
women who want minimum ,ain relie! and interention
will come there$ 1ut there&ll #e continuity as well,
#ecause I&ll get to know the women during their
,regnancy and get to know them$ And when they come
into la#our, they&ll know the midwi!e who&s going to #e
on, looking a!ter them$ )o the only thing is the ,ersonal
!ollow4u, that I hae in England$ I mean, we&re so lucky
in this country - the maternity care is !antastic, and I think
women don&t know how lucky they are$
I think I can #e instigator to #ring midwi!ery !orward in
Australia$
IN-VISION VICK$
1ut you&re de!ecting !rom the N0) darling that trained

OUT-OF-VISION !O ARK"RIGHT

the things that I loe doing$ And I think I&ll meet more
more men that way(
11:15:00 VOICE-OVER NARRATOR

11:21:00 IN-VISION !O ARK"RIGHT

and I&m sure I&ll #e doing a #it more o! that when I&m
there$ 0ere&s me on *arou#ra #each, which is !ie

)tudent Nurse ?onnie )ims is on the third year o! her
nursing degree course$ )he used to work as a healthcare
assistant #ut decided that she wanted to #ecome a
.uali!ied nurse - in s,ite o! the heay workload, academic
schedule and the lack o! money which goes with long
term study
1#:21:00 VOICE-OVER IN-VISION RONNIE SIMS
It is hard work, and the ,ay isn&t great, #ut that&s not why
you go into nursing$ I mean, ,eo,le say it&s a ocation$
You go into it #ecause you loe the ,eo,le and you want
to make a di!!erence$ It&s one o! the !ew "o#s that you can
really make a di!!erence to so many ,eo,le$ You see so
many things ha,,ening: 6ancer, terminally ill een
children that hae !allen oer - in A&E, and you stitch
them u,: it&s the mothers& !aces as well, you see them
looking so relieed at the end o! the day, that their child&s

17:02:00 VOICE-OVER RONNIE SIMS
I&e "ust always liked working with ,eo,le$ It "ust seems
to #e the way to go: I "ust couldn&t sit in an o!!ice it&s

17:17:00 VOICE-OVER NARRATOR
As i! ?onnie didn&t hae enough on her ,late, she&s also
,lanning something rather more e'citing
17:23:00 IN-VISION RONNIE SIMS
I&m going to "um, out o! an aero,lane ho,e!ully with a

down the Aon 5orge a !ew years ago !or #reast4cancer
research, and it&s time I did something else, a little more
mad(
17:45:00 VOICE-OVER NARRATOR
1ut madness comes at a heay ,rice - the "um, will cost
nearly three hundred ,ounds - money that ?onnie sim,ly
hasn&t got 4 so she&s needs to do the rounds at uniersity
and at work with !ellow student 3aura to get as much
s,onsorshi, as ,ossi#le to ,ay !or the "um, and to raise
much4needed money !or leukaemia$
18:03:00 IN-VISION RONNIE SIMS
I&e got one hundred and ten ,ounds, I think so !ar$ A lot
o! that is !rom the hos, ital, where I did my ,lacement$
8n!ortunately, I haen&t got the guts to ask the students,
#ecause I know that they may #e too em#arrassed to say:
AI&m sorry, I can&t a!!ord it$
18:20:00 VOICE-OVER NARRATOR
)o it&s time to hit the unsus, ecting uniersity sta!! !or
some cash
18:24:00 IN-VISION RONNIE SIMS
It&s !or the charity: I really want to do it !or the charity$
And also, the sensation o! lea,ing out into mid4air you
know, that could #e !un(
I wanted to do a ,arachute "um, when I was a#out ;B, #ut
at that ,oint you had to hae ,arental ,ermission and
there was no way my ,arents were going to gie
,ermission !or their little darling to "um, out o! a ,lane$
)o, eleen years later, here we are, and I&m going to do it(
18:50:00 NURSES STING
18:55:00 VOICE-OVER NARRATOR
1ack at A&E, 6harge Nurse 5ain de <ine&s got a ,atient
with a sus,ected neck in"ury$ 5ain and the other A&E
nurses hae #rought the ,atient to the radiology
de,artment !or a series o! C4rays$ It&s no sim,le matter to
,osition the ,atient correctly !or the radiogra, her when a
wrong moe could cause ,ermanent damage to the
,atient&s neck or s,ine$
19:1#:00 IN-VISION VOICE-OVER GAVIN E VINE
1asically, a log roll is when we roll the ,atient oer onto
his side, and we kee, their s,ine in constant alignment$ It
takes !our ,eo,le to do it ,ro,erly$ In order to kee, their
s,ine in constant alignment all the way through, we&e
got to hae one ,erson controlling the head and 6 s,ine,
and the rest o! the ,eo,le are controlling thoracic, lum#ar,
and the legs so we can control the lum#ar s,ine
throughout$ /e&re doing it #ecause the ,atient has a
chance o! a s,inal in"ury, in this ,articular case, this
gentleman here has a ,otential !or haing a neck in"ury$
Although we&e moed around .uite so much that we
don&t think it is, #ut we "ust need to get ,ro,er C4ray&s to
com, letely irradicate the idea$ And the rest o! the log4roll

20:4#:00 IN-VISION GAVIN E VINE
