SAFETY RULES

Rapier Looms
General safety rules
The person in charge of the machine must be familiar with the safety devices installed
and their correct use.
The person in charge of the machine must instruct the operators on the following:
1. General safety and accident prevention rules
2. Specific rules applicable to weaving machines
3. Location of the controls on the machine and their action/effect
4. Location of the EMERGENCY STOP PUSHBUTTONS on the machine for prompt
action
5. Meaning of the visual warning signals
Safety covers or protective devices must be in place, correctly fastened and in perfect
working condition during all operations belonging to regular machine performance. If the
safety covers are damaged, or are removed for any reason and the protective devices
are disconnected or shorted, they must be reset before starting the machine up again.
Visitors must abstain from any contact with the machines and from actuating the
controls; their access to the factory premises shall be allowed only if escorted by duly
qualified company staff.
Safety rules for use
Never start the machine up if it has been stopped for special operations (adjustments,
maintenance, lubrication, etc.)
Do not disconnect protection and safety devices while the machine is in operation. Keep
hands away from moving parts when starting the loom up. Do not carry out work on the
machine while in operation. Keep at a safe distance from any moving parts.
The machine must be attended by an operator while it is running.
At the end of his shift, the operator must inform his successor and his superior of any
malfunctions and/or dangerous faults, even if they have not involved stopping the
machine.
For reasons of technology, some moving parts are not protected. This is particularly so
in the case of the reed and the heald frames. We therefore recommend that all operators
take special care that they do not come into contact with these parts, even accidentally.
Stop the machine before carrying out any work on these parts.
The machine moves in slow motion after weaving stops and automatic pick finding
cycles: do not approach the moving parts and do not carry out any work on the machine
while the lights in the warning strip are flashing
Make sure that
1. No unauthorized persons are close to the machine
2. No objects (tools, rags, etc.) are lying on the machine
3. All doors and safety covers are closed
4. After starting the machine up, no strange noises are heard; otherwise, stop the
machine at once and investigate the reasons.
never wear
1. Clothes that may catch in moving parts (scarves, headscarves, rings, bracelets,
wrist watches, etc.,)
do wear
1. Clothes with pockets that fasten down in which to carry the tools;
2. Closed shoes with non-slip soles;
3. A cap to cover long hair
When the machine is working, avoid:
1. Touching moving parts;
2. Opening or removing safety covers or protective devices;
3. Removing excess yarns or fibres;
4. Touching the fabric next to the reed, the temples, the weft cutter and the take-up;
5. Handling and laying tools, objects, detergents or other items on the machine.
Before starting work, CHECK for any visible faults on the safety devices, and make sure
that the emergency stop pushbuttons work properly.
Never start the machine up if any instruments, lights, etc. on the control panel are found
to be faulty.
Safety rules for weaver
During normal operation of the machine, some yarns produce dust or microfibers that
could pose a threat for the operators health, especially if these yarns have been
chemically treated.
Generally speaking, the law demands that there be a suitable dust-extraction system to
guarantee the safety of the work place
If this is not by itself enough, individual protection equipment should be used (masks,
gloves, goggles)
Fire Risk
The weaving room must be designed to allow for the installation of manual fire
extinguishers or fixed automatic fire automatic fire-fighting systems.
If theres a compressed air supply plant, make sure the cut-off valve is in an easily
accessible position.
If the machine catches fire, adopt all means of fire-fighting; in particular, IMMEDIATELY
a) Cut the power supply by flipping the main switch on the control box
b) Quickly put out the fire, using the fire-extinguishers available and, at the same time,
call other people to come and help.
c) Cut the power supply on the main line by flipping switch upstream the machine
d) Close the compressed air cut-out valve (if present)

General safety rules
To employ only trained personnel on the weaving machines
Ensure that no unauthorized persons gain access to the weaving machines visitors are
permitted to enter the production premises only accompanied by specialist personnel.
To keep his personnel informed in a suitable manner regarding the application of these
safety rules and to monitor compliance with them.
He shall ensure that anyone concerned in the widest sense with the assembly, operation
and maintenance of the weaving machines can refer to the operating instructions and is
also familiar with the location and use of all the safety equipment (light barrier,
emergency stop button etc.)
The weaving machine may not be started up until all cover plates have been fitted
Always wear ear protection in the weaver room. It should be supplied by the mill and its
use by mill personnel checked at regular intervals.
Work on the machine
Main switch set to 0 and secured with the personal padlock.
Following are especially important for work involving danger from moving parts or
electric voltage:
1. Maintenance work
2. Adjustments
3. Checks
4. Eliminating mechanical and electrical faults
5. Lubrication
6. Cleaning
Weft and warp breaks can be dealt with while the main switch is set to I
Never touch moving machine parts or work anywhere near them
Do not operate control buttons until you have ensured that there is no hazard to persons
or equipment
Do not rest your fingers on control buttons
After pressing a control button, never reach into the working area of the weaving
machine
Rules for the weaver
1. Never restart weaving machines which have been stopped by authorized persons
2. Before starting up a stopped weaving machine, make sure that starting up will not
involve danger to persons, machine and material
3. If control buttons are being operated with one hand do not touch the machine with the
other hand. If the control buttons were to be pressed by mistake, there would be no time
