Electricity Saving Tips For Homes And Offices

Top Ten Refrigerators in India by electricity consumption and size

Abhishek Jain June 12, 2014
There are multiple types and brands of refrigerators or fridges available
in the market today. Everyone wishes to be informed before making a
buying decision of a refrigerator. Most sources on the Internet provide
details on features and reviews. Electricity consumption hardly becomes
the deciding factor. To help people make electricity consumption as
deciding factor, we at Bijli Bachao have decided to put up a list of Top Ten
refrigerators in India by electricity consumption and size.
The basis of this ranking is the data from BEE (Bureau of Energy
Efficiency). BEE data contains yearly electricity consumption of a
refrigerator and this information is self reported by the manufacturers.
The data is calculated in test conditions.
We have taken the data on electricity consumption and categorised it by
the capacity or volume of the refrigerator. The refrigerator with the least value of units/lts is given the highest ranking.
Multiple models with the same value are given the same rank.
The list below contains only the top ten ranked refrigerators. List of all BEE star rated refrigerators are available on the
useful links given below.
Use the Add to compare icon to compare the monetary value of the units available from BEE based on your tariff from
your electricity provider and your usage.
Please note Direct Cool refrigerators are single door refrigerators and Frost Free refrigerators are multi door
refrigerators.
We regularly update this list as new models get added in the BEE list of refrigerators.

your previous query was entered in the system and I replied to it. We have a caching mechanism
on the site which refreshes every few hours. So when you submit a query it is not visible till the
cache clears (which happens after some hours).

I am looking for a refrigerator to store more vegetables and fruits as well space to keep cooked food with
bowls. thought of going for double door(not the side by side). looking for good storage space for
vegetables. hence thought of going for between 500-600 ltrs. but few friends suggested to go with
commercial storage refrigerators(which are generally used to store ice creams, etc in shops) than the
consumer refrigerators. hence looking for suggestion between the commercial and consumer and than
the specific models in that segments. Appreciate your help on this.

Hi,
Stores use freezers/deep freezers to store ice creams. Those are not ideal for storing vegetables.
If you need 500-600 lts refrigerator, then you can look at Samsung RT56H6679SL or RT54H6679SL
or any of the Hitachi models with inverter technology compressor. You can also look at Samsung
models with convertible freezer (freezer that can be converted to regular refrigerator function in
case you need to store more veggies): http://www.samsung.com/in/consumer/home-
appliances/refrigerator/frost-free/RT45H5809SL/TL

Hello Abhishek,
I was just confused selecting one between these two.
1. Whirlpool FP 283D 3 Doors
2. Whirlpool NEO IC275 2 Doors
Is there any difference if BEE is not rated for 3 Door refrigerators ?
What would you suggest from the above ? or if you think something is better than the above, pls suggest.
Thnx

There is no BEE rating for 3 door refrigerators also there is no data available for 3 door models.
But theoretically 3 door model should be more energy saving if the compressor is the same. And
within the same brand, my guess is that most of the technology should be similar. So you can go
for the 3 door model.

HI Sir,
I went to purchase LG fridge model GL-D322RPJZ (5 star rating with 198 unit of consumption per
year)however it is unavailable, instead I was offered to buy GL-D322RPJL (4 start rating with 247 units of
consumption per year). Shop keeper said that 5 star rating fridge will cost you 3k more than this one and
the units saved may not cover up the extra cost you pay for the 5 star rated model. What do you suggest,
Sir?

Hello Mr Nahar,
We have observed that refrigerators in real use consume at least 33% more than what has been
put on the BEE label (because those numbers are in test conditions). So if we take that as
reference, the difference between the two models is about 501.33= about 67 units a year. If each
unit costs Rs 5, then it is Rs 335 per year (if rate of electricity is more then it will be more). So in
this case it certainly does not create a great deal of difference if the price is 3 K more. But each BEE
star rating is for a range of electricity consumption. At times the difference between a low end BEE
4 star rated model and a high end BEE 5 star rated model is quite high to justify the benefit. Also in
some places the cost of electricity is also very high (mumbai is close to Rs 10-12 per unit). So you
can go for the BEE 4 star rated model.

hi mr abhishek, i am confused between LG GL-M472GPHM(BW) and panasonic 450 litres with bottom

better with panasonic, is that so.what about the service.

Hello Mr Vkrant,
If the bottom freezer model that you are looking at has inverter technology compressor then I
would suggest you to go for Panasonic. The LG model also has that. But bottom freezer
technology in general is more efficient. Also inverter technology compressor gives more
consistent cooling.

Hi Harish,
Between the two models you have mentioned I would say that Whirlpool model may turn out
slightly better because of the sixth sense technology. However in general the best technology
available in refrigerators these days is Inverter Technology compressor. Which is mostly available
in double door and side-by-side refrigerators. Double door refrigerators are rated on BEE star
rating, but others are not, so there is no energy consumption data available for other type of
refrigerators.

Hi Fareed,
Both models have digital inverter compressor so from efficient performance perspective both are
good. However LG GL-D322RPJL is BEE 4 star rated model where as the Samsung model is BEE 3
star. So LG model is more energy efficient. I would suggest to go for the LG model in this case.

Godrej Edge Pro versions are the most energy efficient models in this segment. So they will save
good amount of electricity. Brand wise both are known brands and your choice will truly depend
on which brand provides better service in your area.
