HARVEST SUPERVISOR (Farmer III)
The Harvest Supervisor works under the direction and supervision of the Farm Manager and leads the production team through harvest procedures. The harvest supervisor documents analysis of data and information associated with the efficiency of the farm. The harvest supervisor performs and schedules work associated with production of microgreens and upholds requirements associated with certification of QCS and Global GAP. This employee shall provide Selovita and Florida Urban Organics the following services and/or duties:
Perform work associated with the production of microgreen Be responsible for harvesting endeavors Manage harvest center equipment; Take inventory of farm resources and restocks weekly Execute daily farm objectives Produce plant observation reports Deliver pest management reports Deliver produce and harvest inventories Assist with the establishment and implementation of S.O.P.s Record harvest and yield data Train staff on harvesting protocols and assists with the enforcement of SOPs Provide plant observations Collect samples for leaf tissue analysis and soil sampling Write purchase requisitions and procures farm resources Help manage log entries Assist with the enforcement of documentation requirements in relation to GAP and QCS Assist with the management and calibration of farm instrumentation Assist with the management of seed inventory and distribution Work rotating weekends
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The harvest supervisor (Farmer III) works under the supervision of the Farm manager to ensure the daily operation and functionality of the farm. Strong communication and delegation skills are necessary for this position as the lead harvester often instructs and provides farm directives related to harvesting and micro green production. A positive attitude, thorough and efficient pace, strong work ethic must be maintained, understanding that the harvest supervisor will always be setting an example for the production staff in harvest endeavors. The harvest supervisor must have a strong and attentive understanding of the rhythm of farm work and the ability to jungle harvest work in order to meet the sales demand.
This position requires flexibility and adaptability as unexpected factors can often affect the daily plan. It is important that the harvest supervisor is abreast of daily and weekly weather forecasts. Monthly feedback sessions will occur between the farm managers and the harvest supervisor. This is a vital time to reflect on the working relationship and communication to do performance evaluation, and discuss any difficulties or areas for improvement. This is also a time to communicate observations of performance or issues that may need assistance or addressing. Additionally, all product produced at the farm is channeled through the harvest center. For this reason, the harvest supervisor holds a key role in quality control. By the same token, the harvest supervisor assists in pest scouting, plant health measures, and other directives associated with the quality of product including the weekly plant observation report.
The harvest supervisor must be familiar with all farm directives associated with the operation of the farm. As the harvest supervisor, one will be responsible for initiating and implementing harvest directives. While many of the day to day tasks involved with running the farm are executed by others, it is the responsible of the harvest supervisor to ensure harvest directives are completed correctly and up to standard. The harvest supervisor must have a strong and advanced working knowledge of production processing and a general understanding of botany. In addition to harvesting, the harvest supervisor will partake in all farm directives on an as needed basis. Daily responsibilities will vary dependent on the daily schedule and will be dictated by the sales of farm product.
The urban farming and aquaponic industry with the aid of technology is rapidly progressing, as a result, on the job training and knowledge acquired by production personal has significate value to the company. For this reason, operations and information acquired on the job must be documented accurately and concisely. The harvest supervisor must communicate observations, findings, and relevant farm harvest information through the proper channels. Labor costs associated with the harvesting of product plays an integral role in the success of the business. The harvest supervisor must implement performance measures and hold those involved in the harvest accountable for maintaining speed and efficiency. The harvest supervisor is responsible for recording all data relevant to production performance including harvest yields. These documents must be kept updated, professional, and organized for record keeping purposes. The successful performance of these responsibilities by the farm management team will ultimately result in the use this information and aid Selovita in the development of future systems.
The harvest supervisor position is a unique position that helps bridge the gap between production and sales. This is accomplished by keeping an up to date inventory and handling orders received from sales department. At times, the harvest supervisor will have to assist in the role of logistics and may have to pack, maintain and ultimately deliver product to the end user.
The right person for this position is dedicated, dependable, detail-oriented, well-organized, good humored, flexible and demonstrates effective time management. Great commutation and self- motivation are imperative as is a genuine interest in growing wholesome, organic food on a small sustainable farm. Additionally, the position requires someone who understands the intricacies and challenges associated with a startup business, never losing sight that this is an operation that must be economically independent to achieve its mission of a being a sustainable food system.
Employee accepts and agrees to such employment, and agrees to be subject to the general supervision, advice and direction of the Farm Manager and Director of Operations. Employee also agrees to perform (i) the duties outlined in the description and other duties as are customarily performed by an employee in a similar position, and (ii) such other and unrelated services and duties as may be assigned to employee from time to time by Selovita as long as they do not conflict with the implementation of the employees primary responsibilities. Employee agrees to be subject to Selovitas policies outlined in the company handbook and agrees to adhere to the Non-Disclosure Agreement.
