Android Based Light Illumination Control Using HLICM

Abstract

With the openness, flexibility and features that Android offers, it has been
widely adopted in applications beyond just SmartPhones. This paper
presents the design and implementation of a low cost yet compact and secure
Android smart phone based home automation system

In this project we propose a design using bothmicroprocessor and light
sensors for automatic room lightdetection and control. Our design, the
HLICM (Home LightControl Module) which will be installed in every light
fixtureof a family, is made up of four blocks: the pyroelectricinfrared (PIR)
sensor circuit, the light sensor circuit, themicroprocessor and the RF module.
By using the PIR sensorcircuit, the HLICM detects if a human body enters
thedetection area or not. If there is no human body present, all
controlled lights are turned off. If there is, the HLICM detectsthe light
intensity under the environment and maintainssufficient light by controlling
the light intensity using fast switching power semiconductor devices. We
havealso integrated an Bluetooth module module to transmit and receive the
datafrom a remote android mobile . The result of using the HLICM shows
that thetotal power consumption can be reduced.

Receiver:-
The Receiver Section consists of following blocks:-
1. Transformer-
For stepping down the voltage to required 12V AC value.Transformer is
also used for isolating the sensitive electronic equipments from 230V AC
supply.

2. Rectifier and Regulator Circuit:-
The 12V AC supply is rectified and regulated to 5V DC.
3. PIR Sensor:-
A passive infrared sensor (PIR) is an electronic sensor used to sense the infrared
rays emitted by objects occurring in its field of view. We are using BISS0001
Micro Power PIR Motion Detector IC.the features of theses IC are:-
Low power CMOS technology (ideal for battery operated PIR devices)
CMOS high input impedance operational amplifiers
Bi-directional level detector / Excellent noise immunity
Built-in Power up disable & output pulse control logic
Dual mode : retriggerable & non-retriggerable

4. Light Sensor:-

Light Sensor is used to measure the luminous intensity in a free space. We
are using a PN Photodiode as a light sensor. The intensity of light is
measured and the respective voltage signal is given to microcontroller, A
lookup table is pre-defined in microcontroller memory which compares the
voltage signal and the intensity is calculated.

5. MOSFET :-

MOSFET is used as a fast switching power electronic switch used to control
the intensity of applied voltage. The precise control and switching will be
achieved by a microcontroller program. The microcontroller will execute the
program to control the switching action of MOSFET as per required.

Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Basics

There are many forms of modulation used for communicating information. When a high
frequency signal has amplitude varied in response to a lower frequency signal we have AM
(amplitude modulation). When the signal frequency is varied in response to the modulating
signal we have FM (frequency modulation. These signals are used for radio modulation because
the high frequency carrier signal is needs for efficient radiation of the signal. When
communication by pulses was introduced, the amplitude, frequency and pulse width become
possible modulation options. In many power electronic converters where the output voltage can
be one of two values the only option is modulation of average conduction time.

What is Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is a wireless technology used to transfer data between different electronic devices. The
distance of data transmission is small in comparison to other modes of wireless communication. This
technology eradicates the use of cords, cables, adapters and permits the electronic devices to
communicate wirelessly among each other.

The key features of Bluetooth technology:
Less complication
Less power consumption
Available at cheaper rates
Robustness
