Parker Denison has always been a leader in product quality, operation longevity and innovation regarding the
piston products range. Over the years and as technology has changed, new methods of controlling the piston
pumps have been developed that allow the operator new unprecedented levels of control and system
optimization that could not be realized before and cannot be matched by our competitors today.
Advances in manufacturing techniques, materials and general Electro-hydraulic controls has seen a reduction
in overall size, complexity and moving parts while increasing accuracy, repeatability and operating life. With
this in mind, this manual is intended to guide you through the upgrade from the 5A electro-hydraulic pump
stroker to the newer generation 9A version.
The 9A Electro-hydraulic pump stroker offers many benefits, some of which are being more cost effective,
easier to maintain, more reliable over time while still offering the best performance from the piston pumps or
motors in the applications it is used with.
Introduction:
Methodology:
The conversion process described in this manual covers the electronic needs only, and will allow the user to
control the 9A stroker without adding or increasing wire count between the existing controller location and the
pump. This is an enormous advantage especially during retro-fit applications. This method also does not
require any local power to be applied at the pump, again a major advantage during the re-fitting process.
The converter unit has been designed to cater for several user configurations and comes with user selectable
links that allow choice of in-circuit or out-circuit 30 load resistor, differential or Normal input signal amplifier
and user +/-10V outputs for local connection to joysticks e.t.c.
The unit also comes with visual indicators that show power on status as well as which output ( A or B ) is
being powered.
The converter comes factory set to give the following I/O characteristics:-
100% +Volts DC Input ( **based on +300ma into 30 ) = 100% +Output = approx. PWM +300mA.
100% -Volts DC Input ( **based on -300ma into 30 ) = 100% -Output = approx. PWM -300mA.
The output current settings can be changed by the user if required by using the I Min and I Max adjustments
provided for each coil driver output. DO NOT overdrive the stroker coils or long term damage may occur due
to overheating.
The output PWM frequency is factory set to 140Hz. This may also be changed if required by the user.
**Note:- These values will alter slightly due to the Heating effect the input signal will have on the 30
resistor if used.
Approvals:
Both the active Stroker Converter Unit ( SCU ) and the pump mounted Passive Converter Unit ( PCU )
have been tested to and passed the current CE regulatory tests for the following standards:
EN-12895 Industrial trucks ( Emissions ) and
EN-12895 Industrial trucks ( Immunity ).
The unit has been further tested to the new Euro-Norms of:-
EN-61000-6-3 Generic Emissions for domestic & Light industrial
EN-61000-6-2:2001Generiv immunity for industrial environments
Use of this controller under conditions not specified by EN-12895 will require the user to clarify the application
with Parker Denison technical staff before proceeding.
To maintain compliance with the tested EMC specifications listed above, the converter must only be connected
to the vehicle battery supply and must NOT be allowed to control or operate the pump system while the
vehicle is connected to ANY external power supply ( I.e. battery Charger or engine warmer e.t.c.) and must be
fully isolated from external supplies if this situation occurs .
This controller has been designed specifically to operate with the Parker Denison range of pumps and 9A
electro hydraulic strokers.
Use of the controller with products other than those mentioned above or for applications outside those shown
will require clarification with Parker Denison technical personnel at:

SPU Assembly Details:
The SCU is designed into an inverted enclosure. The base mounting plate is actually the enclosure lid which is
intended to be assembled to the main housing first using the 4 x countersunk screws provided. Once assembled
correctly, this protects the links and potentiometer adjustments after system calibration from unauthorized
access, tampering and also provides mechanical and environmental protection during usage.
Once the Lid has been securely attached to the main housing, the SCU can then be attached to the chosen
bulkhead / operating location by using customer supplied fasteners ( upto M4 ) suitable for extended use in the
bulkhead material.
Even though the SCU is fully encapsulated to give the best possible mechanical and electrical protection,
consideration for the SCU positioning should take into account the ambient and working temperature, vibration,
cable lengths / connections and other external environmental issues such as moisture ( condensation ) e.t.c.
when a mounting location is being decided upon.
All screws and/or fasteners used should be checked for tightness and correct fitting to ensure the operational
reliability of the SCU and the attached components.
NOTE: The diagnostic LEDs ( 2 x Green and 1 x Blue ) are low voltage and low current indicators
only and will not harm the operator or cause the unit to malfunction if broken.
Assemble lid to main
housing using 4 x countersunk
screws supplied. Ensure
tightness is correct.

Pump Hysteresis graph:
Mounting Options:
This graph shows the total pump
hysteresis ( 9A stroker + pump
mechanicals ) when using the
new SCU and PCU. The input
signal to the converter was a DC
current signal at +/-350mA
current capability ( applied to the
30 load ) with no dither to
simulate the type of signal that
would have been connected to
the original 5A stroker.
As can be seen from the result,
the converter allows the 9A
stroker and pump to perform as
expected.
This picture shows the two ways
that the passive unit can be
mounted depending on pump
orientation. With the passive unit
mounted in this way, coil
protection is maintained as well
as offering protection to the
passive unit and the 2 pole
connector. The anodised
aluminium support bracket comes
pre-assembled to the passive unit
and uses two bolts ( supplied ) to
fix mechanically to the 9A stroker
assembly as shown.
