Phoenix Brooks tries to reel in a big catch during the Pine Barrens Festival at the Church of the
Holy Eucharist. All last week, the darkness and quiet of the Pine Barrens were replaced with the
sounds of roller coasters, carnival games and the aroma of funnel cakes and cotton candy. The an-
nual event is the largest fundraiser for the church. For the story and another photo, see page 5.

Residents will see a new face
on the Tabernacle Board of Edu-
cation as Dr. Megan Jones was in-
troduced at the boards monthly
meeting held July 21.
Jones will fill the vacancy left
by former board vice president
Tina Marie Coolidge who re-
signed May 30. Jones will serve
the remainder of Coolidges term
until July 1, 2015.
Board president Michael Lee
said he was impressed with the
quality of candidates who inter-
viewed with the board. Seven can-
didates were questioned by the
board at a special board of educa-
tion meeting held Thursday, July
17.
It was not an easy decision,
Lee said. There were seven out-
standing members of the commu-
nity.
Jones has been a science
teacher at Shawnee High School
for 16 years but her connection to
Tabernacle goes back even longer
than that.
Im close to a lifelong resi-
dent, Jones said with a laugh.
There were a few years before I
lived in Tabernacle.
A graduate of Tabernacle Mid-
dle School before the name
change to Olson Middle School,
Jones was excited about the op-
portunity of being a member of
the board presented.
My husband told me about the
vacancy and we both thought it
was another way to give back to
the community, Jones said. Its
very unique to live in a small
town like Tabernacle. It feels like
an extended family.
That feeling is evident in the
school district, Jones said.
The support staff in the dis-
trict is wonderful, Jones said.
Its a great experience for the
students to have these teachers
and staff that are in the Taberna-
cle schools. It really is a family
here.

If you think, after 26 years, lo-
cals are tired of the annual Pine
Barrens Festival, you would be
mistaken.
Its something they look for-
ward to all year, Amy Morgan of
Southampton said of her two
daughters. They love playing the
games and riding the rides. Oh,
and the food.
While funnel cakes, fried Oreos
and ice cream are crowd fa-
vorites, the food and beer tents
are stocked with much more than
normal carnival fare as visitors
can choose from crabs and clams
to pulled pork and chicken wings.
Its a night out thats different
from the usual, Ted Samuels
said. You can have dinner out-
side, listen to some music, its re-
ally nice. And you know youll see
someone you know walking
around.
Father Andrew Jamieson said
the parish expected more than
30,000 visitors throughout the
week. The big crowds and carni-
val atmosphere lead many to
compare the event to a night at
the beach.
Its really an awesome event to
have so close to home. Its like a
night out on the Ocean City or

Wildwood boardwalk, said Mark Smith,
who made the short trek from Medford
Lakes with his wife and daughter. To have
all the rides and games and food here is
great for us. Its easy to come any night of
the week and you dont have to travel all
the way to the Shore for a night like this.
More than 450 volunteers decked out in
lime green 2014 Pine Barrens Festival t-
shirts donated their time to the event both
within and outside the parish. The parish
maintains all the booths and the only part
of the event run by an outside source is the
rides.
The Ferris wheel proved to be the most
popular ride with teenage couples hoping
to get stuck at the top while the teacups
and bumper cars were the draw for
younger riders.
Majestic Midways continues to be great
in providing the rides and they draw a lot
of people to the festival, Jamieson said.
The only obstacle for parents? Convinc-
ing their kids they have to leave. Oh, and
that they cant come back every night.
You try not to give them too much
sugar, Smith said with a laugh. But Im
sure well be back another night even
if it is just to play some games for a little
bit.

N
ext week, on Monday, Aug. 4 to
be precise, our company is cel-
ebrating its 10-year anniver-
sary. Ten years ago on that date, we
published the first newspaper in the
companys history The Haddonfield
Sun.
Ten years later, we publish 10 news-
papers each week, covering the towns
of Haddonfield, Moorestown, Cherry
Hill, Voorhees, Marlton, Medford, Mt.
Laurel, Tabernacle, Shamong and
Princeton. Weve grown a lot over the
last 10 years, but we havent lost sight
of our roots.
On Monday, when we turn the Big
One Zero, well be hosting a group of
our employees, customers, business
partners and community leaders who
helped make these 10 years so special
for us. Jack Tarditi, a leader in the
local community, will be the keynote
speaker.
The celebration at the Woodcrest
Country Club in Cherry Hill will in-
clude all the great things that every
party needs good food, good drinks, a
good atmosphere, a good speaker, good
conversation and good, classic silent
auction.
But what will make it extra special
and what were most excited about is
the good that our 10-year anniversary
celebration will help kick off.
As part of the celebration, we are
proud to announce the start of the Sun
newspapers Ray of Hope founda-
tion. Under the umbrella of the South
Jersey Foundation, the Ray of Hope
will raise money to give back to the
local communities we cover.
Back in the day, when we were a
much smaller company, we ran an an-
nual contest called the Ray of Hope.
Readers would submit short essays
nominating a local group, organiza-
tion, Little League team, PTA, Girl
Scout troop and others who were most
deserving of a monetary award. We
published all these essays, and let our
readers vote to select the winner. And
we gave that winner $500.
The Ray of Hope foundation we are
starting will help us get back to our
roots of giving back in a tangible way
to the communities that have support-
ed us and helped us grow over these
last 10 years. And this time, were look-
ing to make a bigger impact than just
$500 to one group each year.
Our party on Monday will be the
first fundraiser in our ongoing effort to
give back. Well have other ways that
well raise money with your help
in the coming months.
At the end of the day, though, where
well need your help the most is telling
us which local groups deserve the fi-
nancial aid. As we start to build a big-
ger and bigger fund, well run similar
contests to our original Ray of Hope to
help decide which organizations are
most deserving. And then well make a
contribution.
We cant wait to start, and were hop-
ing youll help us help those who do the
most in our communities.
in our opinion

ing photos, documents, maps and
everyday utensils from bygone
years. Their most precious pos-
session is a large, lidded basket
