Pioneering paper. A fundamental contribution to aquatic ecology, marine ecology, freshwater
ecology. The first publication to create a useful innovative theory of how aquatic ecosystem and
the biological community function as a sophisticated hi-tech mechanism to maintain and
improve water quality in ecosystems. This unique and productive theory explains the
multifunctional role of aquatic organisms (aquatic biota) in water self-purification in ecosystem.
The theory has a lot of applications. The author's fundamental concepts and conclusions are
instrumental in better management of water resources, environmental safety of water supply,
environmental protection.
The author of this publication is a Fulbright Award-winning scientist at Lomonosov Moscow
State University (the best university in Russia and a significant part of Eurasia), Dr. Sergei A.
Ostroumov, who authored and co-authored two successful books on environmental sciences,
ecotoxicology, and protection of environment, namely Biological Effects of Surfactants, and
Conservation of Living Nature: Problems, Trends, Prospects.
This useful publication is a part of the series of insightful publications ecology, environmental
science with substantial innovation. New facts, fresh insight, productive ideas. Full texts are
available free. Different Internet services provide the helpful information, and the full texts or

** Question. SELF-PURIFICATION. WHAT IS SELF-PURIFICATION? Answer: Self-
purification is the complex process, or, more precisely, a set of natural processes in aquatic
ecosystems, which lead to improving or maintaining water quality. Another term with a similar,
but not completely the same meaning: assimilative capacity. ** Question. WHAT KIND OF
JOURNAL HAD PUBLISHED THIS PAPER? Answer: This is a high rank journal that is
indexed by PubMed and Web of Science. ABSTRACTED/INDEXED IN: PubMed/Medline,
SCOPUS, EMBASE, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), Google Scholar, CAB International,
Academic OneFile, AGRICOLA, CAB Abstracts, ChemWeb, EMBiology, Gale, Global Health,
INIS Atomindex, OCLC, SCImago, Summon by Serial Solutions; Doklady Biological Sciences
is a bimonthly journal presenting English translations of current Russian research in the
anatomy, cytology, ecology, embryology, endocrinology, evolutionary morphology,
experimental morphology, genetic, histology, hydrobiology, immunology, microbiology,
morphology, parasitology, physiology, virology, and zoology sections of the Doklady Akademii
Nauk (Proceedings of the Russian Academy of Sciences). The Proceedings appear 36 times per
year; articles from the selected biological sections are collected, translated, and published
bimonthly. The article must be presented for publication by acting Russian or foreign members
of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Editor-in-Chief: Yurii Osipov, ex-President, Russian
Academy of Sciences; ISSN: 0012-4966 (print version); ISSN: 1608-3105 (electronic version);

** Question: HOW BROAD IS THE GEOGRAPHICAL RANGE OF THE AREA OF
POTENTIAL RELEVANCE AND APPLICATION OF THE CONCLUSIONS THAT WERE
MADE IN THE PAPER? Answer: Just look on where the paper was cited: it was cited by the
authors of other scientific articles who conducted their research in Europe, North America, and
Asia (e.g., in China). ** Question: WHERE THE RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS OF THE
PAPER COULD BE APPLIED? Answer: the results presented in the paper could be applied in
explaining and predicting the behaviour of aquatic ecosystems, in securing the safety of the
sources of water supply, in protecting biodiversity of aquatic organisms, in aquaculture, and in
education. These countries, regions will benefit from the theory of water self-purification:
http://5bio5.blogspot.com/2012/08/these-countries-regions-will-benefit.html ** Question: IS
THIS PAPER AVAILABLE IN OTHER LANGUAGES DIFFERENT FROM ENGLISH? Yes,
it is available in Russian, see: On the biotic self-purification of aquatic ecosystems: elements of
the theory. DAN (Doklady Akademii Nauk), Vol. 396, 2004, No. 1, p. 136141. [System of
elements of the theory of biotic maintaining the natural purification potential of ecosystems].
The paper was awarded the honorary Diploma from the Academy of Water Sciences (2006). In
Russ., translated into Eng. ** Question: WHICH FUNDAMENTAL ASPECT OF BIOLOGY
AND ECOLOGY IS ASSOCIATED WITH THE ISSUES OF SELF-PURIFICATION OF
WATER? Answer: In biology and ecology, one of the most fundamental and intriguing problems
is stability of biological and ecological systems. What makes ecological systems stable under
changing circumstances? In case of aquatic ecosystems, this issue is very much connected to the
mystery of stability of aquatic habitats, i.e., water quality. This paper gives answers to that
question. ** Question: WHICH OTHER DISCOVERIES WERE MADE BY THE SAME
AUTHOR? Answer: the other discoveries by the same author (S.A.O.) are listed online:

startling, revolutionary DISCOVERIES: ecology, environmental sciences, biology.

experiments measured the biota-driven fluxes of the matter and chemical elements in a model

pollutants. Namely, these biota-driven flows of the chemical elements were decreased by a

https://sites.google.com/site/2001dbs380p499synerg/ Review: According to a reviewer (world
catalog, WorldCat): This unique, brilliant article discovered a new link that connects issues of
eutrophication and toxic pollution of water bodies by man-made toxicants and toxic waste. The
paper explains why almost all effort to control eutrophication failed. The cause was ignoring the
important fundamental considerations (on the role of toxic pollution by synthetic chemicals) that
were presented in this very useful, insightful, innovative publication. The paper is an important
contribution to both applied ecology and fundamental theory of ecology. This article contributed
to better understanding of what is ecosysmem's health and ecosystem service. This paper is very
useful to all who is writing a review or seeking a fresh insight in ecology and water science.

The author of this publication is a Fulbright Award-winning scientist at Lomonosov Moscow
State University (the best university in Russia and a significant part of Eurasia), Dr. Sergei A.
Ostroumov, who authored and co-authored two successuful books on environmental sciences,
ecotoxicology, and protection of environment, namely Biological Effects of Surfactants, and
Conservation of Living Nature: Problems, Trends, Prospects.

In short: Excellent, outstanding, innovative paper. Great contribution to better understanding of
how healthy marine ecosystem functions, how chemical pollution may decrease the stability of
marine ecosystem. New experiments of the author discovered new hazards from low, sublethal
concentrations of pollutants exemplified by surfactants (they are Amphiphilic Chemicals ) ,
detergents.
The author is a Fulbright Award winner. This is one of good scientific journals in the field. The
paper is highly recommended.

Article: On the Multifunctional Role of the Biota in the Self-Purification of Aquatic Ecosystems.
S. A. Ostroumov; Moscow State University; Russian Journal of Ecology, Vol. 36, No. 6, 2005,
pp. 414420. Translated from Ekologiya, No. 6, 2005, pp. 452459; The first paper to formulate
in detail the new qualitative theory of multifunctional activity of organisms in improving water
quality, in other words, the theory of water self-purification by organisms.

AbstractPrinciples of the theory of the ecological mechanism of water self-purification based
on multiple functions of the biota in freshwater and marine ecosystems are formulated. In
developing this theory, the results of the authors experiments with filtering hydrobionts have
been used. These results indicate that the water self- purification mechanism is vulnerable to the
impact of some pollutants and, in particular, surfactants. Conclu- sions drawn on the basis of the
theory have practical significance for biodiversity conservation and for the sus- tainable use of
the biological resources of aquatic ecosystems. Key words: aquatic, ecosystems, water quality,
