Main ideas for the English Reformation

-Faith and contrition + charirty
-Basis of faith is the scripture and the creeds

-Eucharist- Christ IS in the substance

6 Acts: Henry VIII- written as a defensive act since Henry had been excommunicated by
the Pope, trying to demonstrate that he had not changed in his theological convictions
(Catholic ideas are confirmed)

Act for the Advancement for True Religion- condemned certain translations of the Bible and

5) God is a cocoon...in which the person dies...but they feel a true connection. soul is

7) Spiritual marriage. Everything is done in love.

-Spiritual exercises- meant to be a guide/manual for meditations and reflections that would lead
to deeper understanding of life and a deeper commitment to Christ

Council of Trent
-Originally the Pope called the council with the hopes of repairing the breaches of the church
body, but by the third session it became obvious that this would not happen
-Instead, focus on fighting the Protestants and renewing the Catholic church
-Third session determined the Nicene creed to be the true symbol of faith (page 202

-Church has a right to interpret the Scripture
-The Church has two sources of authority: Scripture and tradition (page 202

-On justification
-The human will must do what it can in order to turn itself to Gods grace
-Without faith, cannot turn to the grace
-Justified by grace of Christ
-Decided that there were seven sacraments
-Affirmed transubstantiation
-Want to educate the public
-priests have to be examined before they are ordained (no corrupt priests)
