6 Defencetopreemptiveopeningbids
6.1 Apreempteffectivelydeprivesyoursideofspacetoinvestigateyourbest
contract.Becauseyouareforcedtobidatthethreeorfourlevel,youneedto
bealittlestrongerthanoveranopeningbidofoneofasuit.Butbecausethe
preemptorwillbeweak,andshortintheothersuits,partnerismorelikelyto
havesomeusefulcards. Assumepartnerhasabout7HCPwhenmakinga
decisionwhattodoyourpartnershouldrememberyouhavedonethis. Asa
generalguideyoumay:
Overcallona6cardsuitoraverygood5cardsuitandvaluesforan
openingbid.
Makeatakeoutdoubleonanyhandworthanopeningbidandsupportfor
theothersuitsyoumaynotalwayshavetheidealshape,butsupportfor

one(3NTmaybethebestchoiceonstrongerhandsandonsomeother

thestrainoffpartnerandbidgameyourselfifyoucan.

distribution,givesasingleraiseandareallystronghandbidsgameoreven
repeatsthecuebidasastronggametry.
7.2 Whenyourlefthandopponentsopeningbidisfollowedbytwopassesits
usualtodispensewiththeunusualnotrump,asotherwisetherangeof
balancedhandstocoverbyadoublewouldbetoogreat.2NTshowsa
balancedhandofabout1921HCP.Michaelsstillapplies.
7.3 ResponsestoUNTandMichaels
Withoutanygreatfitineithersuitresponderwillsimplyshowpreferencefor
oneorothersuitataminimumlevel(withequallengthgivingpreferenceatthe
cheaperlevelisrelevant).Rememberthatwhenpartnerhasshown5card
suits,3cardsupportisamplesometimesyouhavetosettleforonlytwo.With
goodsupportforeithersuitrespondercanbemoreaggressive.
Inonetypeofsequence(1 2 or1 2)youdontknowpartnerssecond
suit.Aresponseof2NTaskstheovercallertoshowtheminor.Youwoulddo
thisonahandwithnolikingforpartnersmajorandsomesupportforeither
minoror,occasionally,withthreecardsinthemajorandsomeinterestingame
ifthehandsfitwell.
