ART MUSEUM CRITIQUE
. 1) Which museum did you visit?
I visit University of Utah museum.
. 2) Describe at least one of the permanent collection
exhibits on a theme, period, geographic region, or topic)
within the museum.
When I sent there I see one of the permanent collection of the University
of Utah museum, is the Gathering of Samurai Daimyo and His Samurai
Retainers thats the name of the painting. It made of woodcut, ink and
paper. The date it creates is 19 century. The period is Meiji. The height of
this art is 14 inch and the width is 29 inch. In this picture we see 17 men
sitting and gathering. They are wearing traditional Japanese warrior
clothes or its like a samurai clothes. I notice one of them didnt wear any
warrior clothes. I assume that must be the king or some kind of leader.
The other warrior just group together maybe talking about plan to defeat
the enemy or something. This kind of art is very typical Japanese art. I
saw them a lot in movie or TV.

. 3) Give a brief, one paragraph description of a special,
temporary exhibit
for the temporary one I pick a statue of Ushnisavijaya Buddha. Its made
from bronze so it had a gold color, make it looks expansive. This statue is
from Tibet. Its a bout 12inch tall. This statue is one of the Buddha
religions God. He has 8 hands; two of them holding the praying stuff and
one of them kind of almost near the chest. He had three faces and his
sitting in Stupa. These are God of Long life. They had many Hand might
be symbol of helping and all three faces might symbolize he could see and
help what human need to be helped with.

. 4) What do you think the museum administration and/or
exhibit curators want you to learn or gain from the
exhibits you viewed?
I think they want us to learn about art from other country and from period
to period. Because I could see that some of the art are not will be long to
be there. Some of them are a month and more then they will move it to
other place to be shown to crowd. Some of the art are related to religion
like there are a lot of painting about Christianity stuff like Holly Marry and
Jesus. This might be they want us to learn that every religion have their art
to. They sometimes send their message using art.
. 5) What kind of information is provided about the works?
Where might you look for further information if you were
interested?
The information I can find in the museum is not much for the work. I could
find the name of the creator, the name of the art, and the date. Some of
them have long stories about it and some of them only been mention that.
I do ask to the people there in the information desk. The place that we
could find more information for this work is from the website it self. Some
of the people there could answer the stuff we ask but I dont see a lot of
people walking around waiting for people to ask question.
. 6) Choose several works that particularly appealed to you.
Explain why you were drawn to these works. Comment
on the subject, style, medium, time period, etc. Who
were the artists? What message do you think the artists
were trying to convey in the works you chose to
discuss?
There is one of the art that I really like and its located in second floor of
the building. It placed in the corner. The Art called the Breathless (self
portrait in blue) it is a sculpture of a men head that are colored and glazed
blue in ceramic materials. You can see it holding its breath and both of his
eyes seems bulge out. His like almost couldnt hold his breath anymore. I
like this sculpture because it seems very interesting to me. It is very
humorous and funny. It is less boring then some of the art I see in my
opinion. The sculptor of this art is Arneson Robert (1930-1992). This art
remind me people that hold it breath under the water. The blue color
symbolize the color of water and the face and expression symbolize how
he hold his breath in the humorist way. I see that a lot of his art is more
into humors rather than meaning from it.
7) How did the artworks you looked at relate to material
we have discussed in class? (They do relate in many
ways, you just need to look for those relationships).
All the art work in that place most of them related to the material in class. I
see a lot of Buddhist and Hindu God as their sculpture in the museum,
and we discuss that before about the Buddhist and Hindu. Then there is a
lot of Christianity paintings and arts. We discuss that in class ad well. I see
some native American Indian tribe art. There are some sculpture that are
only part of it like its head or hands or missing the head. It might be
because of the war back in that time. So it makes the sculpture feel down
and break apart.
. 8) What was your personal reaction to this experience?
Would you enjoy attending this type of event again?
Why or why not?
My reaction to this its like a normal assignment that we should attend to
the museum so we could get score from it. I dont meet anybody that I
know in the museum, it would be fun if I went there with someone I know
because when I went there I only get all the things to do at the assignment
and went back home. I dont enjoy this kind of event at all. Because I dont
really like going to museum to watch all the arts there. I rather do or make
the art it self. So I went there with my brother and he wait inside the car for
15 minutes because he had other things to do. I came inside and I see a
small gift shop on the left, I really like going to the gift shop. I think I could
spend much time more in the gift shop than inside the museum. So went
inside the museum and do the stuff as I can because I had limited time.
Over all I dont really enjoy going to the museum. If I went to other country
I dont go to the museum but I will visit their zoo and do culinary.
