1. Paradox- it is a statement that appears to be self-contradictory or silly but may include a latent
truth. It is also used to illustrate an opinion or statement contrary to accepted traditional ideas. A
paradox is often used to make a reader think over an idea in innovative way.
Example: A rich man is no richer than a poor man.

2. Oxymoron- is a figure of speech that combines incongruous or contradictory terms.
Example: Worthless gold

3. Alliteration- is the repetition of the same sound or letter at the beginning of each or most of the
words in a sentence. The easiest way to use alliteration would be to repeat the starting letter of the words.
Example: Saras seven sisters slept soundly in sand.

4. Assonance- the repetition of identical or similar vowel sounds in neighboring words.
Example: "I must confess that in my quest I felt depressed and restless." - "With Love" by Thin Lizzy

5. Palindrome- is a word or a number or a sequence of units that is able to be read the same way
from either direction, be it forwards or backwards. Punctuation and spaces between the words or lettering
is allowed.
Example: Step on no pets

6. Consonance- repetition of consonant sounds, most commonly within a short passage of verse
Example: I dropped the locket in the thick mud.

7. Synecdoche- referring to a part by its whole or vice versa
Example: The word "lead" is commonly used to refer to bullets.

8. Metonymy- A figure of speech in which one word or phrase is substituted for another with which
it's closely associated; also, the rhetorical strategy of describing something indirectly by referring to
things around it.
Example: The cup is quite tasty.

9. Onomatopoeia-the use of words that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they
refer to.
Example: flutter, fisst, fwoosh, gasp

10. Antithesis- literal meaning opposite, is a rhetorical device in which two opposite ideas are put
together in a sentence to achieve a contrasting effect.
Example: "Love is an ideal thing, marriage a real thing." - Goethe
