A
LETTER FROM THE TE
Will you help create a
wellness-minded community?

Locally grown: Its not just a great way to enjoy your food, its also a fantastic way to help
your local economy thrive! When you support businesses owned and operated in your
community, you and other area consumers reap the benefits. (We must admit, though,
that were a bit biased: Natures Pathways is a local small business, after all!)
Here are just a few of the great advantages gained from nurturing locally owned
businesses:
A BOOST TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY. Small, local businesses play an
important role in job creation. The staffs of these businesses then have the opportunity to buy from other area companies, maybe even the place where you work.
In fact, when you spend $100 at a locally owned business, 68 of those dollars
stay local, compared to the $43 that stay local when $100 is spent at nonlocally
owned businesses. Those dollars support local police and fire departments, area
manufacturers and service providers, and more!
INSIDE KNOWLEDGE ON WHERE AND HOW YOUR GOODS AND
SERVICES ARE MADE. Locally owned businesses are able to create close rela-

tionships with their customers and provide detailed information about their
products and materials.
DEDICATED NONPROFIT SUPPORT. If youre not fiscally able to donate as
much as you would like, shopping at local businesses can help you support nonprofits
in your community. Small businesses actually provide 250 percent more support than
large businesses to nonprofit organizations, according to Sustainable Connections
(sustainableconnections.org), a nonprofit proponent of local businesses and their
contribution to a healthy environment and the well-being of all citizens.
A SENSE OF HOMETOWN PRIDE. Local business owners and their staffs
arent just people who provide you your goods and services theyre your neighbors. And when you support them, you support your community. As a local business consumer, you know that youre part of something bigger than yourself
something that can be as great as you and others wish it to be.
Youll find many local health and wellness businesses in the pages of this publication. Our authors and advertisers are experts in their fields and committed to doing
whats best for their customers and community: you, your family and your friends.
We encourage you to peruse the pages of Natures Pathways. Were certain youll
find exactly what you need and youll get to foster a healthy local economy at the
same time.

Low
testosterone
Symptoms of deficiency,
benefits of treatment
...........................................................
By Kari Jossart, APNP

ave you ever wondered what the big deal is with the
recent media and advertising campaigns talking about
men experiencing low T? Low T, or more specifically
low testosterone, affects millions of men worldwide. Recent estimates indicate approximately 13 million men are affected by this
disorder. If left untreated, low testosterone has been associated
with an increased risk of diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome,
osteoporosis, cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality.
Testosterone levels naturally decline in adult men beginning at
age 30 and continue through their adult lives. As the most important male sex hormone, testosterone is responsible for the production of an adult males features, including musculature, chest hair
and sex drive. Though many believe the main symptom of having
low testosterone is decreased libido, or sex drive, that is only one
of many possible symptoms associated with a man having low
testosterone. Men with low testosterone may also experience
some or all of the following symptoms:
Lack of energy
Decreased strength or endurance
Decreased enjoyment of life
Depression or irritability
A change in erections
Increased fatigue
Deterioration in work performance
Loss of height
Muscle weakness or body aches
Though these are the most commonly reported symptoms, additional physical, sexual and emotional implications have been
noted.

Natures Pathways | August 2014

If left untreated, low

testosterone has been
associated with an
increased risk of diabetes,
obesity, metabolic
syndrome, osteoporosis,
cardiovascular events
and all-cause mortality.
If indicated, testosterone replacement therapy can provide
several benefits. Among the most popular is an increased interest
in sex and improved sexual performance. Other benefits include
improved mood, decreased irritability and fatigue, increased
muscle mass and strength, and improved bone density therefore
preventing osteoporosis. In addition, cardiovascular benefits have
been seen.
Low testosterone can be caused by damage to the cells of the
testes due to chronic illness. However, many times the cause
is unknown. If you feel you may be experiencing symptoms of
www.naturespathways.com

low testosterone, consider undergoing a program to diagnose

hormone imbalances using a functional medicine approach. A
complete evaluation, including medical history, diet, lifestyle,
stress and hormone levels, should be done first, however.
Though testosterone replacement is not for every man, when
indicated through comprehensive hormone testing, replacement is offered through both custom-dosed or standard-dosed
bioidentical hormone replacement therapy followed by regular
monitoring of risks and side effects after starting treatment. Other
treatment options may include therapies that modulate hormone
action such as nutraceuticals, botanicals, and dietary and lifestyle
considerations.
How men perceive their masculinity directly affects the value
they place on understanding and responding to their health needs.
Historically, men give more emphasis on their roles of provider and
protector than they do on the importance of their own health.
At Wise Woman Wellness we have developed our Mens Vitality Program so
men can feel comfortable talking about and improving their health. Through our
comprehensive program we can help men excel at their important roles of protector and provider by living a healthy lifestyle and offering a positive example to
those around them. See ad on page 3.

ur family bought a juicer many

years ago after learning amazing
stories from people who suffered
from all sorts of ailments and who were
healing their bodies through juicing. We
just watched an entertaining and enlightening DVD this week on two such individuals in Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. Wow!
Our family was completely motivated to
make juicing a much larger part of our life.
Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead is the
story of an obese, sick, Australian named
Joe Cross, who came to America to do a
60-day juice fast while traveling across
the country interviewing and talking with
people. Along the way he inspired a lot of
people, including a morbidly obese truck
driver, Phil, who unbelievably had the
same rare autoimmune disease that Joe
had chronic urticaria. Seeing the transformation Joe and Phil had all through the
benefits of juicing was truly inspiring. In
fact, it was so inspiring I decided to write
this short article on it.
What is all the hype about juicing, you
ask? For starters, you can more easily get
the recommended amount of vegetables
in your diet, which most people do not
accomplish in a day.
Do you think you could eat a bunch of
kale and spinach leaves (about 3 cups),
two apples, a beet and a whole cucumber at once? Maybe not, but you certainly
could drink that much. Juicing does most

digestion system does. The nutrients

of the work the digestion system does. The
nutrients left after juicing go right to the
cellular level within your body in minutes.
As Dr. H.E. Kirschner, M.D., explains in
his book, Live Food Juices, this process
raises the percentage of nutrients reaching
the cellular level from less than 35 percent
when we eat the whole food to more than
90 percent when we drink the juice with
fiber removed.
Imagine that! All those nutrients going
right to your cells, rebuilding and renewing those little sick and weary buggers
to super cells, now strong and healthy.
According to The Science Museum, Your
body is constantly replacing old cells
with new ones at the rate of millions per
second. By the time you finish reading
this sentence, 50 million of your cells will
have died and been replaced by others.
Through this process of feeding your body
the nutritionally superior juices of vegetables and fruits, you can see why the body
can heal itself of many of the diseases and
sicknesses prevalent in America today.

With the summer growing season in

full swing, now is a great time to juice. By
visiting farmers markets or local growing
stands, you can buy produce brimming
with freshness. Besides buying cucumbers
and kale for your salads, buy some extra to
juice. It may take a little more effort, but
the increased energy and vitality you will
experience is worth it. So dont let that
juicer collect dust in your basement! Put it
where you will see it to remind you to juice
daily, or at least a few times a week. Your
cells will thank you.

ts hard not to be tempted by the barrage

of skin care products on the market
today, promising to undo years of aging

count how many times Ive been in my local
pharmacy meaning to pick up a magazine

or a card, only to walk out with a bag of

expensive miracle creams and potions, all
filled with chemicals and words I cant

about what I eat. I have been a vegetarian

Why am I smearing this chemical-laden

Coconut oil, with its rich fatty acids

and abundant antioxidants, is a natural
and obvious choice for skin care.
I decided it was time to make a change.
In my journey to live an all-around healthier life and to avoid products tested on
animals, Ive begun switching to simpler,
natural beauty products. Its not easy, but
its not as hard as I thought it would be
either. I was concerned it might be expensive, but it actually is turning out to be
the opposite. I am getting used to incorporating simple, natural products into my
beauty routine and I love the change its
making in my skin.
One of my new favorites is coconut oil.
Im not sure how I didnt turn to coconut
oil sooner. Considering how much I love
a good curry, youd think I would have
known it would be a natural match.
Coconut oil, with its rich fatty acids
and abundant antioxidants, is a natural

and obvious choice for skin care. This past

winter was so harsh and dry that my skin
actually started to feel rough. Even coming
into spring, I still felt like I was part lizard.
I tried all kinds of oils and lotions, but
nothing seemed to help. I thought my skin
would never be soft again. None of my old
standbys were helping, so I gave coconut
oil a try.
My first impression was that it felt
incredibly luxurious. It doesnt smell
like coconuts at all not that I would
have minded so the fragrance doesnt
compete with whatever other creams or
perfumes you might use. It works great as
a leave-in conditioning treatment for dry
hair, but wash it out thoroughly before you
go out or youll look like you took a bath

Benefits
of laser
therapy
........................................
By Karen M. Strickfaden, DVM

LET THERE BE light! Laser light!

Laser therapy is an exciting veterinary treatment available for many conditions that plague our furry friends. Laser
therapy increases circulation, heals tissue
and reduces pain and swelling. This
therapy is noninvasive and causes no pain
to the patient.
Laser therapy is effective for both acute
and chronic conditions, including:

OPENING WOUNDS AND BURNS.

Laser light promotes the development
of the collagen necessary for repairing
tissue. In addition, the laser reduces
the formation of scar tissue. For these

reasons, laser therapy is very effective

in treating wounds and burns.

POST-OPERATIVE RECOVERY.
Laser therapy stimulates the development of new capillaries that help speed
up the healing process. This, in combination with the reduction of scar tissue,
makes therapy laser particularly valuable
in helping patients recover from surgery.
ARTHRITIS, HIP DYSPLASIA
AND DISC DISEASE. A therapy
laser helps reduce swelling because
it triggers drainage of the lymphatic
system. It also improves nerve function
and blocks pain by increasing nerve
cell connection and decreasing nerve
sensitivity.
TENDON, LIGAMENT AND SOFTTISSUE INJURIES. Laser light
stimulates cell growth and reproduction, speeding the repair of muscles,
tendons and ligaments.
INFECTIONS. Laser therapy increases
oxygen and nutrients to damaged cells
and carries waste products away from the
cells. Infections are healed more rapidly
as a result of laser treatments, according
to the Laser Surgery for Pets website.
www.naturespathways.com

For chronic conditions that have no cure,

like hip dysplasia, laser therapy will provide
comfort and increased mobility in the
patient by reducing pain and inflammation.
Classes of lasers

The word laser is actually an acronym

that stands for light amplification by
stimulated emission of radiation. Lasers
are labeled by classes; the higher the
number, the stronger the laser. Class III
lasers are often called cold lasers and can
penetrate inch of tissue. Class IV lasers
are medical-grade therapy lasers that can
penetrate 8 centimeters of tissue.
Therapy lasers are entirely different
from surgical lasers; they do not cut the
skin.

How laser therapy works

Therapy lasers stimulate the natural function of turning oxygen into cellular energy,
according to K-Laser, a company that
develops such products. The laser generates local circulation, which increases
blood flow. As more blood flows, the
blood carries more oxygen to the cells.
In addition, the blood carries lactic acid
and carbon dioxide away from the cells.
Providing energy to the cells allows
quicker healing for the affected area.
Increased circulation can also foster new
blood vessel growth with reduced swelling. Lasers can also be used on acupuncture points without using needles.

Treatments

For acute conditions, the laser will actually promote healing in the patient. For
chronic conditions that have no cure, like
hip dysplasia, laser therapy will provide
comfort and increased mobility in the
patient by reducing pain and inflammation.
During laser therapy, a technician passes
a beam of infrared light over a pets skin in
the affected area. No anesthesia is required.
The pet feels some warmth, but no discomfort or pain. The treatments usually range in
duration from 5 to 20 minutes.
Treatments are cumulative in nature.
For best results, at least six treatments are
recommended.

laser therapy works, go to www.k-laserusa.

Ask your veterinarian how laser
therapy can benefit your pet. From faster
wound healing to improved nerve function, the benefits of laser therapy are
immeasurable.

Pets with a large affected area or multiple

areas may require more treatments. Your
veterinarian can give you a treatment plan
that works best for your pets situation.

Risks

Pet owners and technicians should wear

safety glasses during treatments. The laser
can burn eyes if the beam is shined directly
into them. The laser therapy has no side

Wisconsin is a

ts hard to picture a Wisconsin fair or festival without great

food and drinks, and this year, event planners can help keep
the leftover bottles, cans and packaging out of landfills with
increased event recycling.
State and local laws require recycling at home and on the road,
with ways to recycle materials like clean cardboard, aluminum
cans, and glass or plastic bottles necessary at all events and gatherings. The state Department of Natural Resources provides free
recycling signs and information to help event organizers and
attendees follow the law. These free materials are found by searching the DNR website, dnr.wi.gov, for recycling away from home.

At fairgrounds and concert venues, beer tents and exhibition

halls, even sporting events and private parties, Wisconsin residents already look for ways to recycle, said Cynthia Moore, DNR
recycling program coordinator. Simple steps like posting clear
signs and pairing trash cans with recycling bins can reduce litter.
A little planning goes a long way.
Festival, fair and other event attendees should look for recycling containers and ask property managers when they dont see
a place to recycle.
Event organizers can download, print or order DNR resources
to encourage vendor recycling, create successful collection systems

and reduce overall amounts of waste. The free resources include

the Recycling and Waste Reduction at Your Special Event guide,
signs and labels for recycling bins and a brand new Special Event
Vendor Recycling Info Sheet.
In cooperation with the Wisconsin Beverage Association, Wisconsin Council on Recycling and Associated Recyclers of Wisconsin, the
DNR will also make repurposed soft drink syrup barrels available
this year as low-cost recycling bins for event planners with limited
budgets. Event planners can learn more about the barrel program by
contacting Waneta Kratz at Waneta.Kratz@wisconsin.gov.
While organizing a recycling effort at these events may seem
daunting, Moore said, a number of recent event organizers have
shown that it can be done effectively and efficiently. Providing easy
recycling at special events is a great reminder of how everyone
everywhere can reduce waste and keep our environment clean.
Moore noted that local governments who allow the use or lease
of their buildings, parks and grounds for festivals or other events
must provide for recycling themselves, or require event organizers to recycle in the permit, lease agreement or contract.
For more information, contact Cynthia Moore, 608-267-7550.

Expert answers
to your health
and wellness
questions
Can coconut water
replace regular water
and which type of
yoga is best for you?
....................................................
By Karmen Nenahlo

Question: Ive been seeing coconut water on the shelves at my

local grocery store. Is this a suitable substitute for my daily water
intake?
Answer: The average daily fluid intake for adults is roughly
13 cups for men and 9 cups for women. Coconut water can absolutely count toward your daily intake, and of course, is a much
better option than drinking sugar beverages, soda and sports
drinks.
Coconut water is not water with coconut flavor added; coconut
water is the liquid that forms naturally inside the shell of a coconut.
Compared to other juices, coconut water is higher in potassium,
has fewer carbohydrates and is a good way
to rehydrate after a workout. As with all
food intake, moderation is the key, as
one 8-ounce plain coconut water can
contain up to 45-50 calories or more
if you opt for water enhanced with
flavors such as mango or pineapple.

Question: Hatha, gentle, Vinyasa, hot yoga: with so many

different styles of yoga, how do I know which one is for me?
Answer: Whichever type of yoga you decide to explore,
you will reap the benefits from this form of exercise. Improved
circulation, pain relief, and improved strength and flexibility are
just a few of the physical benefits of yoga. Different yoga styles
do offer up additional benefits, but what is most important is
finding a style and instructor that speaks to you, which can lead to
other benefits such as stress relief, inner peace, and learning to be
present and mindful.
Hatha yoga is a general term used for any type of class that teaches
physical postures. Gentle yoga is typically performed with most of
the postures on the floor and limited standing postures. Gentle yoga
is good for beginners, as well as those with joint issues. Vinyasa is
style of yoga known for fluid, smooth transitions from pose to pose.
Vinyasa style yoga is good for those who dislike routine and like
to move (i.e., those who are looking for a workout while doing
yoga). Hot yoga is a type of yoga performed in a heated room. The
postures in class can be to the instructors choosing. Hot yoga is
perfect for those who are interested in discipline and want to work
up a sweat. Bikram yoga, which is also performed in a heated room,
moves through the same 26 postures every class.
Whichever type you choose, you cant go wrong
adding yoga to your weekly routine.

Finding afterschool care

for
your child
..................................................................
By Julie Mulroy

he need for quality child care doesnt stop when a child

enters school. With some school days ending around 3
p.m., parents working full time may have several more
hours to spend at their job.
The challenge for working parents is finding a quality schoolage child care program that offers a safe and stimulating environment for playing, relaxing and doing homework, while being
different enough so that kids dont feel like theyve been in school
for 10 or more hours.

When thinking about what type of program would be a good fit

for your child, consider his or her interests and needs. Fortunately,
our community has many options for school-age care. Each offers
advantages and disadvantages, and none is right for every child
under all circumstances.
Kids with special interests or talents may enjoy a narrowly
focused program that allows them to improve their skills, while
others may thrive in a program that offers a variety of experiences
and exposes children to many different possibilities. Some kids

may benefit from the slower pace and smaller environment of a
family day care home, while others need the larger physical and
social setting of an after-school program. While the great number
and variety of these programs give parents and their children
many choices, it can make picking one all the more difficult.
Start by researching the programs available in your area. Contact
your childs school about available programs. Inquire at community organizations such as the YMCA, the Boys and Girls Club,
worship centers, or parks and recreation departments. Ask friends
and neighbors with school-age children for recommendations.
Parents should look for an after-school program that provides
a safe and interactive environment, says Julia Wohlt, member
service and child care director at the Heart of the Valley YMCA
in Kimberly. Visit programs while they are operating to observe
what goes on. Staff should be welcoming and engaging to children on an individual level. Does the staff know the names of each
child? Are you personally greeted? Ask about communication
between the program staff and parents to see if it is done on a
regular basis in a variety of ways in person, via e-mail or on
parent check-in tables. Quality programs will also ask for parent
feedback and genuinely acknowledge your questions or concerns.
Also, remember to ask what the fees include so there are no
surprises. Do you pay extra for tutoring or special activities? Are
snacks and/or meals included? Ask for a list of program policies
regarding pick-up time, attendance, holidays, school early release
days and days off.
While many parents use after-school care out of necessity due to
work or school schedules, they should remember that these programs
offer many benefits. Wohlt adds, A parents peace of mind is priceless. By knowing your child is in a fun and safe environment, you
dont have to worry about their activities or possible negative influences. Research shows that children who participate in after-school
programs are more successful in academics, are healthier and more
often maintain positive behaviors. After-school providers serve as the
link between school and the family home.

after-school care for the 2014-2015 school year. Visit their website at www.

Are you
doing too
much, too
soon?
How to avoid
overtraining
..................................................
By Heather LaFond

t is well-known that exercise decreases the incidence of disease

and enhances an individuals quality of life. But is it possible to
have too much of a good thing? When it comes to physical activity, the answer is yes. Overtraining occurs when a person exercises too
frequently without adequate time for their body to rest and recover.
When it comes to making a healthy lifestyle change, it is very
important to be realistic. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends a total of 150 minutes of physical activity per
week. If we break that down, we need to be physically active for
30 minutes a day, five days each week. This recommendation is a
general recommendation for the average American to maintain
overall cardiovascular health and well-being. A person may have
to work out for a longer duration depending on their fitness goals.
Increased physical activity is often where problems occur.

Without proper rest and recovery

time, your body will begin to
give out. Knee, low back and
shoulder injuries are some
of the most common ones
experienced from overtraining.
New fitness goals are frequently accompanied by a large sense
of motivation, drive and determination. This in no way is a bad
thing. However, when this enhanced enthusiasm for fitness
leads to overtraining, an individual may experience exhaustion,
burnout or worse yet, injury.
Our bodies adapt very quickly to any stimulus we present them.
After about four to six weeks, your body will adapt to your fitness
routine if you do the exact same thing consistently. This is where
individuals experience a plateau effect. When a plateau is reached,
our exercise routine must be altered in order to continue to see
progress. Most often, individuals feel that if they do more, they
will burst through this wall. This is true; however, our bodies can
only take so much wear and tear before they start to rebel.
There are several side effects to overtraining. Without proper
rest and recovery time, your body will begin to give out. Knee, low
back and shoulder injuries are some of the most common ones
experienced from overtraining. When youre injured, you cant
www.naturespathways.com

maintain a consistent physical activity level and your body will

begin to relapse.
Stress on our bodies, whether it is physical or mental, increases
levels of the hormone cortisol. Increased cortisol levels lead to the
accumulation of body fat, especially in our midsection. Often,
when regression in our progress is observed, we are disappointed
and depression may set in.
The ultimate goal for any person should be to create a lifestyle
that you can maintain long term. If you are working out twice a day
or for hours at a time, are you going to be able to continue to do so?
Once your activity level declines (and you keep your nutrition the
same as when you were more active), your body will begin to lose
its muscle mass, causing you to regain some of your fat deposits.
There are ways to challenge your body without leading to overtraining and its negative side effects. Some of those methods are
interval training, supersets and drop sets. It is always a good idea
to consult a certified fitness professional to ensure proper execution of these advanced techniques. Be safe: Avoid overtraining.
Train smarter, not harder.
Be sure to consult your physician before beginning any type of
physical activity.

Bring balance

Natures Pathways | August 2014

We work to achieve this unity

by practicing the postures (also
known as poses or asanas). For
many of us, the hours of the day
fly by, and adding an additional
hour-long yoga class seems like
an impossible stretch. However,
making time for yoga can start to bring
balance into your life by offering some
stillness for the mind, movement for the
body and peace for the soul. A regular
yoga practice can begin to slow you down
and help you live your days with a little
more stillness and awareness to the present
moment. Making the time to attend a
regularly scheduled class can help you to
develop your own unique practice.
The practice of yoga is not about putting
your foot behind your head as it can sometimes be portrayed in movies or magazines. A more accurate depiction would be
the instruction of grounding your foot to
the floor in a balancing pose with awareness and taking a conscious deep breath.
The common misconception is that a
person needs to be flexible in order to practice yoga. An inflexible person is going to
benefit greatly from getting on to the yoga
mat and experiencing the postures in their
body. A flexible person may have to work
differently in the poses as to not just use
their flexibility to make the pose look easy.

The practice of yoga is a path of continued

growth and development. If a goal is met to
achieve a certain posture, it can be quickly
replaced with a new goal as there are thousands of yoga poses. Yoga is an individual
practice and not a competition. There are
numerous types of yoga and a basic class
offers accessibility to most individuals.
There may be a day where you come
to a yoga class just for savasana, and this
is more than acceptable. Savasana is also
known as final rest or corpse pose and
is the last five to ten minutes of class where
you allow for complete relaxation to soak
in all the benefits of your yoga practice.
It is a very important part of class as you
give yourself permission to completely let
everything go and just rest: a concept often
neglected in our fast-paced society.
Most basic yoga classes focus on taking
time to sit and connect to your breath;
move through a series of standing postures
that strengthen and lengthen the legs, arms,
back, and core; practice balancing postures;
and then move to floor asanas that stretch

the hips and back. Some yoga instructors play music in the background during
class and some prefer the quiet focus of the
inhale and exhale. Music and sound can
offer a tremendous gift of healing while we

mind and soothes the soul. Treat yourself to

a yoga class accompanied by the energy of
the healing sound bowls and you will experience what it truly feels like to unite mind,
body and spirit.
Most often, the most difficult part of

a yoga class is just getting yourself there.

Once there, the rest just flows and you will
walk out thanking yourself for taking that
precious time just for you. When we take
the time to care for ourselves and become
a priority on our own to-do list, we are
able to show up more present and with our
best foot forward in all that we do.
Check out the yoga classes offered near
you, find the class that works for your
schedule, review the studios website or call
with any questions, put on some comfortable clothing, eat a light meal one to two
hours before class, take a deep breath, and
show up for your yoga class it will be life
changing!

providing a safe and nurturing space in
which to manifest and empower your
own innate capacity to heal. Massage therapy and
bodywork, sound massage and reiki, coupled with our
ongoing yoga classes, kirtan and special workshops
are all intended to spark an unfolding of the beauty
and human potential that each of us carry within. We
are here to guide and nurture a greater awareness and
unification of mind, body, heart and spirit by exploring the space that divides them.

Slowing
the hands
of
time
.................................................
By Lisa Jermain

or centuries, we have sought the fountain of youth. While

there is certainly no miracle pill that stops the aging process,
research has brought us closer to the possibility of putting
on the brakes. The science behind it is technical but fascinating.
Heres an overview for those, like me, who are not PhDs.
Our diet, exercise, amount of sleep, environmental toxins and
stress level are all factors in how quickly we age. All of these impact
our telomeres, the DNA at the end of our chromosomes. Telomeres wrap the end of our chromosomes, much like the plastic
tip wraps the end of a shoelace. In our youth, we have approximately 10,000 healthy telomeres. But over time as our cells replicate and divide, some of the telomeres and the DNA they protect
are lost. Shorter chromosome strands lead to frayed DNA and
the symptoms we associate with aging and poor health. Loss of

This has been the mission of Dr. Bill Andrews. In 2011, he was
the subject of a Popular Science magazine article, The Man Who
Would Stop Time. He has spent more than 30 years in molecular
biology and is a competitive ultra-marathon runner at age 62. His
research discovered the gene that effectively protects the telomeres.
The challenge was how to create a safe compound for consumption that would activate the protective enzyme in human cells. So
Andrews began to collaborate with renowned natural products
formulator John W. Anderson, who has developed more than 2,300
products in his 30 years in nutrition research. Together, they target
preventative supplements that support telomere health.
I can personally attest to how nutritional changes affect aging.
One year ago, I felt considerably older than my chronological
age, primarily due to inadequate nutrition, toxins and stress. I
could see signs of aging in my skin and joints well beyond what I
expected in my mid-40s. I knew I needed to make changes. Today,
I am 30 pounds lighter and have been asked if I had a facelift. The
inflammation issues are gone and I have more energy now than I
did 15 years ago. The fuel used to operate the body makes a huge
difference, but the food industry in the U.S. continues to promote
toxic and unhealthy options in the name of convenience. Even
kids are starting their aging process much too young by becoming
obese and putting stress on their organs and joints.
After watching people at a baseball game recently, I am more
convinced than ever that most people dont know they have the
choice to live differently. Author Paul Zane Pilzer predicted a need
for a wellness revolution over 10 years ago, but we continue down

the path of sickness and health insurance, rather than prevention

Andrews and Anderson are on to something. Couple safe,
nonpharmaceutical options with the 76.4 million American baby
boomers trying to recapture youth and you have massive potential. Aging gracefully? Dont mind if I do. Want to come along for

many times because we like them.

And even though we still like them,
we dont understand why we feel so
blah about everything.
This, my friends, is a sign that its
time to mix it up and theres no
better place to do it than in your fitness
routine. Dont have one? Theres your
problem right there; better get on that.
For the rest of us, theres a lot to be said
for expanding your horizons, especially if youre no longer getting what
you used to out of your fitness routine.
When your go-to isnt doing what it
used to, its time to start flirting with
some new activities.
When I ask my students what drew
them to pole fitness, one of the most
common answers I hear is something along the lines of needing to try
something different. A great way to
reduce boredom and low motivation is
to try something new. Every time you
learn a new skill, it works out your body
and mind. Even if the new activity isnt
entirely your cup of tea, it allows you to
learn different skills, meet different people
and appreciate your go-to comfort zone
even more.
Another benefit is a more balanced
and adaptive body. Sticking with one
main fitness activity causes your body
to perform this activity with greater
and greater efficiency. We need to keep

upping the ante if we want to reap the

same amount of benefits we once did and
avoid the plateau effect. Ever wonder
why you lost so much weight when you
started the activity but now arent? Your
body needs change! Performing a different activity means that not only can you
exercise different muscles, you also engage
already strong muscles in a different way.
This contributes to a wider spectrum of
fitness, strength and mobility. And this is
definitely never a bad thing.
The last benefit to discuss is the most
important: injury prevention. Theres
something to be said for taking a break
from things from time to time. If you
keep antagonizing an old, nagging injury,
its time to have a plan B. Even if you are
injury free at the moment, take note.
Setting the obvious overuse injuries aside,
all of us should be concerned for the longterm effects of our choice activites. Muscle
groups have an opposing muscle group.
If you choose an activity that builds up
a certain muscle group more agressively
than the opposing, the first muscle group
will become overdeveloped. This causes a

higher risk of injury in the weaker opposing muscle group, which is being pulled
out of alignment. Keeping this in mind,
a great way to look into a new activity is
to look at what we already do and try to
complement it, or fill in the gaps. If you
develop a well-rounded regimen before
any injuries start to develop, you can save
yourself from a lot of pain in the future.
In a perfect world, we would all have
ample time to fit all the activites we can
think of into our schedule. Unfortunately,
for most of us this is not the case. You may
not like the idea of cutting back on your
preferred activity to make room for something else (or just devoting more hours per
week to fitness), but try to keep the benefits in mind as well as the opportunites. In
many cases, your new activity may complement your old one and actually make you
better at it in ways you didnt expect. As the
saying goes; Variety is the spice of life.

Your money
and doing
the right
thing
............................................................
By Alan M. Zierler

an money buy happiness? Thats a much-debated question with answers that vary from one person to the next. I
would suggest that money itself doesnt make one happy;
rather, its the freedom and choices that having adequate amounts
of money can offer.
Doing the right thing with your money can mean something
different to almost everyone. It depends on your personal philosophy, your priorities and your lifestyle. One thing is certain: The
more purposeful you are in managing your money, the better the
chances youll reach your goals and achieve financial balance.
Putting your personal finance philosophy into action comes
down to following key financial principles as shared by money
experts like Dave Ramsey: save, spend and share. Additional tips
include setting goals, never spending more than you make and,
when shopping, always ask yourself, Is this a need or a want?

Save

If you hope to eke out a few dollars after youve paid all of your
bills, youre likely to be disappointed. A more effective way to
save is to pay yourself first. Deposit a set amount into a savings
account every time you get paid (10 percent or more is recommended). Consider setting up direct deposit or automatic transfer
at your credit union or bank to make it easier.
Saving regularly is the foundation for building wealth and
financial security. Focused saving may mean sacrifices in other
areas, such as passing up the premium cable package so you can
put money into your emergency fund. But the upside is the next
time the car breaks down, you could pay cash for repairs instead
of charging it and paying interest.
30

Natures Pathways | August 2014

Spend

The key when it comes to spending is to strategize. First, set goals.

Then develop a plan (budget) so you can spend intentionally,
track your spending and work toward your goals. Its important
to write it down so you can review and adjust the plan as needed.
Whether you use a pen and paper, a computer program, or an
app, purposefully allocating funds will help you get a better grip
on your spending.
There are a wide variety of personal finance websites that offer
budgeting tools. One of the more popular free budgeting websites
is www.mint.com. You can track all of your accounts including
saving, checking, credit, loans and investments so you get a true
overview of your finances. You can also link up your accounts via
a secure website so you get real-time information.
Another good money management website is www.
BudgetTracker.com, which gives you the choice to manually enter
your transactions or batch download them from your financial
institution. The free version offers limited functions, but you can
opt to upgrade for a low monthly cost and receive unlimited use,
along with the ability to download your files and print reports,
depending on your subscription level. An option for the more
security conscious is www.BudgetPulse.com, a free site that does
not ask for banking information but includes savings goals as well
as budgeting tools.
Keep in mind that finding the right budgeting method for you
is like going on a diet. Youll want one that works yet fits your
unique style and preferences.

Share

Sharing is an opportunity to invest in your community. Most experts

recommend that you share at least 10 percent of your income. The
opportunities are boundless, with nonprofit organizations to match
almost any interest. Maybe you feel passionate about a certain cause,
such as supporting the American Cancer Society, the American
Heart Association, Special Olympics you get the idea. Even if you
cant afford much at first, giving regularly develops the habit and
allows you the satisfaction of making a difference in your community.
Do the right thing for your finances by following the save,
spend and share principles. Need a little help or more information? Along with great online resources like www.bankrate.com
(calculators), and www.nefe.org (financial information for all
ages), local organizations like the Financial Information Service
Center (FISC) offer sound financial education and advice. Many
area credit unions and banks also offer financial education opportunities to benefit their members. Why not get started today?

provide approximately 250 Timber Rattler tickets to families fighting pediatric cancer. Recipients will enjoy not only
a free Sunday afternoon game on Aug. 3, but a special tailgate

the company said, Its always inspiring to hear the courageous

stories of the kids and families in our community fighting this awful
disease. The annual Strike Out Cancer event is a great opportunity
to help shine the spotlight on some of these heroes. Please join us
for a great day at the ballpark for a great cause. Go T-Rats!
Janssen said other business partners provide in-kind donations
and the news media is always especially helpful in creating public
awareness of the event.
On another front, local nonprofit Community Benefit Tree
(CBT) has partnered with Janssen to create the Strike Out Cancer
Day Fund. Heidi Frederickson, executive director of CBT, said,
This fund will be key in financially assisting families who have a
child with cancer, giving them a hand up in their crisis.
Janssen explained, The fund could help them with all sorts of
things. Oftentimes, cancer disrupts family life and theyre down
to one or no income. They drop everything because theyre in the
hospital for months at a time with their child. The funds can be
used for medical expenses, everyday living expenses, or anything
that is tied to that pediatric cancer battle. We want to help them
financially if we can, in addition to the emotional help they get
through Strike Out Cancer Day.
Part of that emotional support comes from Dominos and Pepsi,
who provide pizza and beverages for the tailgate party. Between
the party and the game, kids are allowed to play catch on the field,
Janssen said. There are a lot of on-field activities that the Timber
Rattlers reserve for our families. Some of the kids get to see their
parents on the field, and its pretty comical.
As the event has grown, Janssen said, theyve added a Locks of
Love drive. It has been really neat for kids going through cancer,
who might not have any hair, to see the generosity of the community when strangers donate their hair. Shear Chaos Salon sets up
shop inside the stadium and a lot of spectators come by to see
whats going on. They watch people chop off 10, 12 or even 15
inches of hair. Most years we have about 25 donors.
After the game, the kids collect autographs from Timber Rattler
players. The team is so supportive, Janssen said. They not only
donate tickets, but for every ticket purchased that day by the
public, they donate a dollar to the Strike Out Cancer Day Fund.
The team truly embraces the day and the event.
Janssen encourages families experiencing pediatric cancer to
get tickets by contacting her committee through their Facebook
page, www.facebook.com/StrikeOutCancerDay, or their email
address, which she said they will post all over the community as
the date gets closer.
Other venues for finding tickets are Families of Children with
Cancer in Green Bay, Marshfield Clinics Pediatric Oncology
Team and Community Benefit Tree.
The Community Benefit Tree Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization governed
by Christian values. Our mission is to help individuals and families struggling
with a medical crisis financially, emotionally, spiritually and with practical
resources. We celebrate peoples lives and support by helping family, friends or
co-workers plan a Celebration of Support event for their loved one. In the last 10
years, these one-day events have helped more than 500 families with funds for
living and medical expenses. Community Benefit Tree also provides education,
support, resources and financial assistance for families. For more information,

Making
sense of
trauma
........................................
By Stephanie Kregel

hat causes mental health

trauma, and why are some
people more affected than
others? There are many schools of
thought on the biology of trauma
and its care or treatment. First, lets
start with identifying trauma on a
basic level. Trauma can be any event
or experience that the brain or body
interprets as life threatening, and has
lasting negative effects on physical or
mental states. The human body works
very hard to maintain balance. When
a traumatic event happens, it can threaten that balance. A body
that struggles with self-regulation could be knocked off balance
to a place where that person may not have the tools available to
regulate back to a healthy balance. Trauma can induce stress, fear,
shame, depression, anxiety and a vast array of other symptoms.
We all respond to trauma differently. What may be traumatic for

Trauma can induce stress, fear, shame,

Natures Pathways | August 2014

some may not be for others.

Our brains are all wired differently. The old saying in reference
to neurons in the brain that every psychology or biology student
has heard that those that fire together, wire together holds a great
degree of truth, according to Donald Hebb, a Canadian psychologist whose work was extremely influential on neuroscience and
neurophysiology. When traumatic events happen in our lives, our
brain is recording it. Problems may occur when those neurons
that were recording the traumatic event wire together with other
neurons firing that are processing things like self-image or selfesteem, to name a couple. Those newly wired together neurons
have the capability to change the way we perceive our world and
the people in it.
Some neurons wire together in a way that makes no sense,
causing the person to experience a road block or trauma that may
be difficult to overcome, especially when the person is unaware
of the root cause of the road block. Take for instance, a person
recently experiencing the ending of a relationship with a significant other. One evening while driving home, that person is in a
significant car accident, but aside from bruises and scrapes, experienced no severe injuries. Months down the road, this person
www.naturespathways.com

has started a new relationship, but begins to experience obsessive

thoughts which cause them discomfort and scares them. Through
therapy, the person learns that the feelings of loss, sadness and
grief associated with the ending of the previous relationship wired
together with the experience of fear, loss of control and stress
associated with the car accident. The new relationship triggered
all of those unresolved feelings and current obsessive thoughts
because the brain may have overcompensated its efforts to regain
control and a sense of safety.
What do we do about this phenomenon? If the brain learned
to fire neurons together, then logically speaking, the brain can
unlearn that firing and wiring. The body is an amazing organism
equipped with the means to heal itself. A well-regulated system
will experience stressors and lower the effects in a timely fashion.
How we tap into the healing potential differs depending on the
situation and the person. Mental health counseling can assist in
the rewiring process, while others may benefit from meditation,
yoga or other means of self-regulation. Find what works best for
you. Healing is hard work, but it will be the most rewarding work
you will ever do.

Healthy in spirit:
When someone
new
moves in
..................................................................................
By Rev. April Kain-Breese

id someone new move in with you this summer? Perhaps

you acquired a new puppy, kitten, guinea pig, turtle or fish.
Pets can offer fascinating insights into our own psyches.
I just welcomed a 6-pound Chihuahua into my life, and we are
getting to know each other day by day. In my case, it was love at
first sight, as it often is with a new puppy. I brought him home
with me, and then we began to get acquainted for real and I
began to realize just what I had taken on!
It reminds me of having a baby all over again! But instead of diapers
and bottles, its housetraining and learning to walk on a leash (him,
not me). Crying in the night is the same. Getting up to take care of
elimination needs is the same. Cuddling is the same. The geometric
growth of supporting possessions is the same instead of a crib and
a changing table, its a kennel and an exercise enclosure. And then
there are varieties of dog food, treats, food and water bowls, a doggie
placemat, and the latest acquisition: a grooming brush (though I
could have kept one of the baby hairbrushes its the same sort of
thing). Oh, and the medical documents and instructions: injections,
dietary rules, good sleep hygiene and so forth.

Theres one difference, though the baby didnt have little

metal tags around her neck; thats new.
The dog is being a dog, and I as the new human companion am
responsible for his care and feeding. That fact brought out some
interesting feelings for me, many of them similar to bringing home
our daughter: an overwhelming sense of responsibility and fear
that I would do something wrong, the feeling that I had just lost
complete control of my own life, a preoccupation with what the
new little creature was doing at every moment, skipped meals, loss
of sleep and a feeling of having lots of questions without answers
humbling! I soon realized that most of the adjusting needed to
occur in my psyche, and it wasnt really all that related to the new
canine companion! He was fine; I was the one with the issues!
Maybe you can relate to my experience, or perhaps you have a
new roommate, or an adult child returning home, or some other
newcomer in your home. You may find, as I have, that there is
some turmoil that comes along with even the most welcome
newcomer. For a while, it may seem like your life has become
undone! But take heart!

Take care of yourself, especially in terms of the basics of nutrition, rest and exercise.
Decide what your absolute non-negotiables are. For example,
the dog may not relieve himself in the house; I put up an exercise enclosure to keep him contained between trips outside. Or,
your roommate is not to eat your food or wear your clothes.
Allow other aspects of your new relationship to unfold as
you collaborate to create it. Everybody needs to give a bit.
For example, I dont really want to get up at 5 a.m., but I can
manage that if I have to let the dog out.
Allow plenty of moments to appreciate the positive aspects
of your new arrangement: new friendship, mutual support or
other benefits. In my case, I have a little bundle of fur to love,
an ongoing floorshow of adorable antics, a reason to take that
early morning walk and lots of material for Sunday morning
sermons! Oh, and a new photography subject!
Whomever or whatever you next welcome into your home, I wish
you many happy moments. Even in challenging circumstances,
there can be much to appreciate and enjoy, as long as you are
willing to do your part.

What do
my food
cravings
mean?
...................................................
By Kim Neher, MS, Clinical Nutritionist

ho doesnt experience food

cravings? Whether it be from
a food aroma that strikes up a
memory like moms chocolate chip cookies
or just simply because you are weaning off
of junk food for a healthier lifestyle, cravings get the best of us. So if youre facing
this challenge, youre not alone.

When
it
comes to food
cravings, this
poses a challenge. Is your body asking for something
it needs or is it remembering something
its addicted to? Should you ignore your
cravings or indulge them? The answer isnt

OUR ROLLS ROCK.

always clear. But as a guideline, here are

some tips for deciphering what your body
is asking for.

Sugar

Craving cookies, candy, ice cream, soda,

etc. may mean you are withdrawing from
processed sugar which indeed is almost
drug-like and miss the feeling of a sugar
high. It also may mean that you might be
legitimately craving carbs because youve
under-eaten and need some glucose in your
bloodstream pronto. In either case, try filling
up on plenty of fresh, whole fruit (not dried).

Comfort food

Soft, Strong and Absorbent.

And always a great value.

These are things you used to eat after

having a bad day or something special a
family member made for you when you
were little. Think mac n cheese, peanut
butter and jelly sandwiches or mashed
potatoes. Most often this means youre
probably having a psychological-rooted
craving. You may be associating a feeling
of comfort, familiarity and overall safety
with a particular food item from your past.
These are not good cravings to succumb to.

When your body is chronically

under-fueled, itll start screaming
for all sorts of strange things.
Salt

Craving popcorn, chips, soup or sauces

may mean your body is adrenalin-fatigued.
Although human sodium needs are somewhat low, the adrenals balance human fluid
and salt levels. Try eating celery, seaweed,
raw cultured vegetables, Swiss chard or
spinach when these cravings strike.

High-fat foods

This includes cheese, butter, peanut butter,

fast food or heavy desserts. Your body
is probably desperate for calories. Nine
times out of 10 when you crave extremely
calorie-rich foods, its because you havent
been getting enough fuel for a while (days,
weeks or even months) and your body is
pretty upset about it. The key to battling
this craving isnt necessarily to eat more
fatty foods, but to eat more, period.

www.naturespathways.com

Protein

Wanting chicken, fish or eggs means you

probably arent getting enough protein.
Most Americans actually over-consume
protein, but there are still some who just
do not eat enough, such as vegetarians,
vegans or extreme dieters. In any situation,
work with a nutritionist to ensure youre
getting enough protein for your activity
level, whether it be from plant or animal
sources.

Dairy, bread, pasta,

crackers or other grain
products

Both dairy and gluten-containing grains

contain opioid peptides: amino acid
sequences that affect the brain in the same
way opiates do. These target your endorphin receptors and make you feel very

happy. These opioids are also amazingly

addictive and are largely responsible for
cravings. At the same time, they also cause
blood sugar spikes, are hard to digest and
tend to be one of the major causes of so
many peoples inflammation. Keep your
servings of these foods minimal or opt for
dairy-free/gluten-free choices.
Above all else, eat enough. When your
body is chronically under-fueled, itll start
screaming for all sorts of strange things.
For many people, the best way to defeat
cravings is to simply eat a greater quantity
of real, colorful foods.

ugust is a great time to start preparing your children and

teens for the rude awakening of the alarm clock or you
yanking the covers off! As the summer begins to wind
down, it is helpful to prepare ourselves for the reality of new
bedtimes, wake times, etc.
Having an action plan in place can help ease the morning
anxiety and nagging that occurs.

Plan ahead

Before you and your family go to bed, have things in order.

Designate places within your home where things go to help stay
organized.
Children older than 4 should be able to help with all of this.
Have them buy into this process, it can be as simple as a game of

Create bigger incentives; if they wake up, get dressed, eat, brush

their teeth and get to school on time, they earn something. At the
end of each school week, if children have more wins than losses,
they are able to pick a reward (extra time playing a video game or
watching TV, ice cream, a bike ride, etc.).
Examples of things to do before retiring for the evening are:
Lay out tomorrows clothes. (If you have a picky dresser, give
him or her two choices to pick from or set a timer that allows
five minutes to pick. Once the outfit is chosen, that is what
they wear.)
Place shoes and backpacks near the door.
Deposit the homework folder back in the school bag.
Prepare and pack tomorrows snacks/lunches.
Make breakfast choices simple: cereal, granola bars, yogurt, a
bagel and if all fails, eat in the car! Nutrition is key to learning and growing.
If your child is attending a new school, practice run the driving
route and time it takes. Learn the shortcuts; nothing is more irritating (well at least to me) than hitting every nearby school zone.

Get plenty of sleep

At least a week before the start of school, get back into bedtimes
and alarm wake-ups (unless you are the alarm for your child(ren)).
www.naturespathways.com

Cut off blue screen time for children at least 30 minutes

before bed. Experts suggest an hour, but as a mom, I am a realist.
This includes laptops, iPads, phones, TV, etc. Blue light actually
can trick the brain into thinking it is daytime and can mess with
our circadian rhythm.
Getting a good nights sleep is just as important as good nutrition. Not only does it allow our bodies to rest and rebuild, it is
key to emotional well-being and the functioning of ones brain at
school. We have all heard that eight hours of sleep is adequate, but
studies say that children need 10-11 hours of sleep.
Now, if you are one of the lucky parents who have an easygoing,
motivated child who is always on time for school, I am jealous.
For those who have mornings similar to mine, then not only is
this YouTube clip something you will appreciate, but hopefully
my tidbits of ideas will help as well: http://bit.ly/1m6dpSF. This
YouTube video of The Mom Song is a hilarious demonstration
of how raising kids can make us a little nutty. This is my version:
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up.
Get dressed, get dressed, get dressed, get dressed!
Eat your breakfast! Eat your breakfast! Youll be hungry if you
dont!
Brush your teeth; seriously, brush your teeth.
Find your shoes, where did they go?
Quit chasing the cat, we are going to be late!
Get in the car and buckle up; really, you need to buckle up.
What do you mean you left your backpack at home? Do I have
to do everything?!

We are going to be late again today; can you see that this is stressful for me?
Ok, prepare to get out of the car not yet, the car is still in
motion!
Have a great day! I love you! See you after school.
Whew!
Ok, so even those of us who have well-thought-out and structured plans in place can have mornings like I just described, and
yes, this is very often my morning with my son.
The good news is that we have a lot of chances during the
school year to have more wins than losses if we are lucky! Here
is to a great start to the new school year!

My journey
through
meditation
.......................................................
By Rev. Jen Rietveld

et me begin by telling you that meditation takes practice.

No one is an expert the first, second or even 100th time
they do it. But meditation does get easier and you will soon
notice a vast improvement in many areas of your life.
I remember when I was very young; I am one of those blessed
beings who can remember back to the age of 2. We would be
driving somewhere: usually our road trips took us to visit grandma
and grandpa. And I remember sitting in the backseat with my eyes
closed. I could see beautiful lights dancing in my mind. I always
looked forward to road trips with my parents because I would have
the time to just sit and watch the pictures move through my mind.
I realize now, as a grandmother, that at the ages of 2, 3 and 4,
I was meditating. I didnt have to put any effort into it. I enjoyed
it and to this day remember the feeling that I got when I had the
chance to do it.
Then, of course, life starts to happen. You begin school and then
theres homework, extracurricular activities, friends and chores:
the list goes on and on! Im sure you can relate. I remember very
clearly that I seemed to not have the ability to sit still for anything.

Something on me was always moving whether I was bouncing

my leg or rocking in a chair, I was always moving. I also had a really
hard time slowing my mind down to a calmer pace. Sleeping was
rare because I just couldnt relax. I was diagnosed with attentiondeficit disorder and proceeded with the pharmaceutical protocol.
I promise not to get into the detrimental effects that those pharmaceuticals had on my body; however, I will tell you that I knew
there had to be a better way! I began with essential oils. And to this
day, 20-plus years later after I began them, I still use them daily.
There was one thing that essential oils couldnt do for me that
I discovered meditation could. That was teach me how to slow
down, to look around at the beauty of everything that is around
us, to find gratitude in the smallest things that we are all guilty of
looking past. I again discovered that just sitting or lying peacefully
with my eyes closed could bring me the inner peace I craved.
I meditate every day and I use a CD to help me stay with it. I set
my alarm a half-hour before I need to get up. I keep my portable
CD player and headphones right next to me so I dont have to find
them and I just lie there and allow the process.
I have talked to many people who think they could never
master the art of meditation. The thing is, nobodys asking you to
be a master. This is about you and what you want to achieve for
your self-worth. If you want less stress, I suggest you meditate.
If you want to heal from inner, deep issues that keep you from
moving forward in your life, I suggest you meditate.
I could list a hundred reasons to meditate, but the biggest
reason is: You deserve less stress and more inner peace.
If you need help starting this process, please consider joining a
guided meditation group. One step forward toward your goal is all
you need to get the momentum going in the healing
process!

Shed your

skin issues
Rejuvenessence mediSpa helps
you put your best face forward
BY REBECCA BENTZ

Just about every person has an aspect of their appearance they sometimes
dont like. This is normal, and R-mediSpa provides high-quality services and
products to help. Where R-mediSpa truly sets itself apart, though, is in its
commitment to helping individuals feel confident in the skin theyre in.
Its not about looks, explains Heather Allmann, R-mediSpa business
manager and board-certified licensed esthetician. We strive to
help people with their overall self-confidence and self-image
in what were doing to help them address their concerns.
For some men and women, this can be life-changing.
Shame or anxiety related to their skin issues may have
prevented them from living life to the fullest. When embarking on the journey to regain confidence and control, they
need someone they can trust someone who makes
sure they have the information they need, but doesnt
overwhelm them.
This is precisely where R-mediSpa shines. Led by
founder Dr. Kenneth J. Pechman, M.D., Ph.D., the staff
of R-mediSpa takes the time to truly get to know each
patient and client they see.
We really develop relationships and I feel like in
this culture, thats really a way of the past and thats
too bad. Its almost like a lost art, Allmann says. Our
patients love that you can connect with them on a

Regaining control
You wont find high pressure sales tactics at R-mediSpa.
We dont sell [clients] things they dont need and we
dont try to upsell things that are not going to be useful to
them just because we have a special going on. We dont have
a quota and dont work on commission, Allmann explains.
Our staff here is very no-pressure. We want people to know:
Heres how we can help you address your concerns, here are
some options for you, and youre in the drivers seat you
decide how to move forward.
This can give people plagued by seemingly unmanageable skin issues a welcomed sense of control. But for those
who simply arent sure what treatments or services they
should try, Dr. Pechman and the rest of the R-mediSpa staff
are more than willing to offer explanations of services and
the route they would choose, if they were in a clients shoes.

Taking a realistic view

In a world filled with impossible beauty standards and
snake oil salesmen selling miracle beauty cures, a lot of
what the R-mediSpa team does is manage expectations
and make sure clients understand what a realistic goal is
for their particular skin.
Nothing that we do here is a one and done and youre
out, Allmann says. After all, You didnt wake up this
morning with this new development. Just as you gain
weight over months or even years, skin issues take time to
appear and progress, she explains. And just as it takes more
than one trip to the gym to lose weight, improving skin
issues also takes time.
Yet while a miracle total skin fix might not exist, R-mediSpa
can certainly improve the appearance of anyones skin. The
staff does that by making skin healthier. For some individuals, healthy, beautiful skin can be a dream come true.
When we feel self-conscious about something, it affects
us in so many different ways. It can affect so much of your
life, Allmann says. When patients are moved to tears, telling
us how much weve changed their life, how they just so
appreciate the way we are, that always makes me proud of
us as an organization.

Consider Rejuvenessence mediSpa

for solutions to your skin problems
If you want to

SMOOTH OUT WRINKLES

Try skin-tightening treatments or injectables

Not only does R-mediSpa offer widely known, FDA-approved injectables

like Botox and Juvederm, it also provides technology-based skin options to
reduce folds, fine lines and wrinkles.
We offer options when it comes to skin tightening because what might be
a great option for you, may not be for someone else, according to R-mediSpa.
These options include a quick and relatively painless laser-based procedure, as well as a radio-frequency-based treatment. Both noninvasive treatments stimulate the creation of new collagen, which smooths and tightens
your skin.

If you want to

TACKLE ACNE
Give acne light therapy a chance

Pulsed light technology helps clear moderate inflammatory acne without

the side effects, pain and photosensitivity of other methods of treatment.

If you want to DIMINISH AGE SPOTS,

FRECKLES AND OTHER SUN DAMAGE
Consider photofacial/intense pulse light (IPL) treatments

Those who undergo photofacials are consistently wowed by their effects

on sun-damaged skin. But R-mediSpas Heather Allman, LE, recommends you
wait until cooler months to try this treatment out for yourself.
Its not something that we do a lot of in the summer because its not safe for
us to treat the skin if its going to be exposed to the sun, she says.
In the meantime, be sure to use adequate sun protection. Allman says that
overexposure to the sun is possibly the worst thing you can do to your skin,
aside from smoking.

If you want to GLOW WITH ALL-OVER

YOUTHFUL RADIANCE

Enjoy a microdermabrasion facial

This signature treatment targets acne, dry skin, discoloration, uneven skin
texture, photo damage and fine lines. An added bonus: microdermabrasion
is safe for just about everyone.
People are blown away when they have this treatment, Allman says. Plus
theyre pleasantly surprised by how relaxed and rejuvenated they feel at the
end of their treatment.

Keeping your
balance
How hearing loss
increases risk of falling
..................................................................
By Stephanie Long, Audiologist

alling is a serious problem. Injuries

from falls can result in severe and
sometimes life-altering complications including, but not limited to,
concussions and bone fractures. For many
reasons, these outcomes occur more
frequently as we grow older.
To help reduce the incidence of falls,
physicians rightly suggest having patients
exercise and also have their vision checked
regularly. Both preventative measures
assist in maintaining healthy balance.
Many medications can cause patients to
become dizzy, therefore causing a fall.
Prescription medications with dizziness
as a known side effect will usually have
a warning on the label. It is imperative
that patients are aware of these labels and
follow the suggested precautions.

Talking to your
physician and pharmacist to check the
ototoxicity of medications to determine
if this may be contributing to any balance
concerns is important
as well. Ototoxicity is, in simple terms, ear
poisoning (oto means ear, toxicity means
poisoning) that occurs as the result of
exposure to drugs or chemicals that cause
damage to the nerves of the inner ear.
Those nerves are responsible for sending
both balance and hearing information to
the brain for processing.
In addition to environmental chemicals, many common over-the-counter
medications as well as several prescribed

medications (diuretics, chemotherapies

used to treat cancer, antibiotics, etc.) are
considered to be ototoxic. The degree and
duration of ototoxicity depends on many
factors. Patients should evaluate their
treatment choices with their physician/
health care team before stopping or starting any medications. The effect of certain
drugs is often temporary, while others may
result in permanent changes. However,
while taking a known ototoxic drug,

patients should be aware of the potential

for balance and/or hearing impairment
and talk with their prescribing physician if
they experience these side effects.
Another lesser-known contributing
factor with increased falls is untreated
hearing loss. Research has shown that even
individuals with a mild (25-decibel)
hearing loss showed an increased risk of
falling that was three times greater than
those without hearing loss. This correlation is astonishing and something we all
need to be aware of.
Additionally, the more hearing loss a
person experiences, the greater the risk
of falling. Specifically, each additional
10-decibel hearing loss increases fall risk
by 1.4 fold. Knowing that other factors
can cause people to be dizzy, the study
carefully controlled for this by removing
people with other health issues, such and
cardiovascular disease or known vestibular issues (other balance problems associated with the inner ear).
So why does this happen? At first glance
it does not seem that hearing changes and
falling would be related. However, delving

deeper into the subject, research undeniably shows a significant correlation. One
reason is thought to be that the people who
cannot hear well have less overall awareness
of their environment. Additionally, it is
widely accepted that any degree of hearing
loss requires more effort for listening than
for those without hearing loss. This load
overwhelms the brain with demands on
its resources. While straining to hear and
process the auditory input around them
conversations, sounds of the street,
sounds of nature those with even slightly
impaired hearing will be more likely to miss
a step and fall because their attention was
on the sounds around them, rather than
on gait and balance. In contrast, those with
normal hearing can listen passively without
effort and do not have this added challenge.
Although everyone is likely to experience changes in their hearing as they age,
those with the greatest risk are individuals
who have worked in noisy settings, such as
paper mills, factories, farms or in the military. Also, individuals with diabetes are at
great risk for hearing loss as are those who
have any cardiovascular disease. If any

of these working environments or health

issues pertain to you or a loved one, it is
best to see an audiologist for a baseline
hearing screening.
Fortunately, hearing loss of all degrees
can be treated through amplification.
Hearing aids provide the brain with
the missing auditory information and
decrease your likelihood of falling.
As the old saying goes, An ounce of
prevention is worth a pound of cure. Making
regular visits to your hearing specialist is one
of the most important things you can do to
ensure your overall health and happiness.
Taking the necessary precautions to reduce
the risk of falls and the life-changing consequences that can take place as a result is well
worth the conversation.

Children are
not miniature
adults
Benefits of pediatric massage
......................................................................
By Sara Willems, NCTMB, LMT

wise friend of mine once told me that practicing massage

is, in fact, practicing the old medicine ways: the ancient
medicine ways. She could not be more correct. Infant and
pediatric massage has long been a common practice in families of
Eastern and African cultures. Many indigenous tribes use some
form of bodywork to soothe, relax and heal their little ones. With
our modern technology and hurried lives, we often find ourselves
lacking in quality family time and touching each other less. The
ancient practice of massage can serve to reaffirm a close bond
with our children, and to convey a sense of security and trust.
Children respond very positively to any form of massage. Most
likely, it is because of the sense of touch and the bonding it brings
that has such a therapeutic effect on the child. For infants, a gentle
gliding stroke with some oils is the best form of massage therapy.
As children grow older, massage can include separate work on
hands and feet, concentrating on the fingers and toes.
Sessions for massage therapy should not last for more than a
quarter of an hour, as childrens attention spans are small and they

may find longer sessions irritating. You may also find that the
child falls asleep while being massaged. This is a positive sign and
points to the positive effects of the therapy.
Here are some specific benefits:

Infant weight gain

Premature babies often struggle with weight gain. Touch, obtained

through gentle massage and cuddling, releases a growth hormone
in premature infants that helps them gain necessary weight and
aids development of vital organs and the brain. A study by the
Department of Neonatology at the Childrens National Medical
Center in Washington, D.C. showed that premature infants who
were massaged, particularly with body stroking and passive movement of the limbs, gained more weight than premature infants
without massage.

Stress and anxiety relief

Massage reduces stress hormone levels and blood glucose levels.

According to Maria Hernandez-Reif, a researcher at the Touch
Research Institute, lower stress hormones not only reduce feelings of anxiety but contribute to a healthier immune system. The
immune system fights illnesses by defending the body against
toxins, parasites, bacteria, microbes, pathogens and viruses. Due
to its relaxing effect, massage has been found to reduce asthma
symptoms in children and to also help them adhere to a sometimes painful diabetes treatment program.

Understanding
lymphoma and its
potential
causes
........................................................................................

he human bodys immune system is integral to its shortand long-term health, helping guard the body from a host
of threats, including germs and viruses. But the immune
system can be compromised, and when this happens, the results
can be severe.
Lymphoma is one of the more troubling issues that can compromise a persons immune system. A cancer of the lymph system,
which is a part of the immune system, lymphoma comes in many
forms, and recognizing which type of lymphoma a person has can
help a doctor tailor a treat-ment plan and provide a more accurate prognosis to his or her patients. But men and women also can
benefit from understanding lymphoma, as it can help them more
effectively manage their disease or better understand what a loved
one diagnosed with lymphoma is going through.

What are the types of lymphoma?

There are many types of lymphoma, and these types fall into one
of two categories: Hodgkin disease and non-Hodgkin lymphomas.
Hodgkin disease: Hodgkin disease begins in white blood cells
known as lymphocytes, and because lymphoid tissue is present in
many parts of the body, Hodgkin disease can start nearly anywhere
on the body. However, Hodgkin disease most often starts in the
lymph nodes of the upper part of the body, such as the chest, neck
or under the arms. Hodgkin disease will spread gradually, most
often from lymph node to lymph node. But because there are
different types of Hodgkin disease, the disease can grow and spread
differently depending on the type a person has.
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma: Non-Hodgkin lymphoma also
begins in the lymphocytes and can begin almost anywhere in the
body. There are many types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but they
were often grouped as slow- or fast-growing lymphomas. The
former grows so slowly that it produces few symptoms, while the
latter spreads so quickly it can cause severe symptoms and may be
referred to as an aggressive lymphoma.

What causes lymphoma?

Though researchers are not always certain why certain factors

make a person more likely to develop Hodgkin disease, they have
determined a handful of factors that increase a persons risk. People
www.naturespathways.com

who have had mononucleosis, an infection caused by the EpsteinBarr virus, or EBV, have an increased, albeit small, risk of Hodgkin
disease. DNA from EBV is found in roughly half of Hodgkin
patients Reed-Sternberg cells, which are a type of cell found in
people with Hodgkin lymphoma. But many people infected with
EBV never develop Hodgkin disease.
Age is another risk factor for Hodgkin disease, as the disease is
most common among people between the ages of 15 and 40, especially men and women in their 20s. But many men and women are
diagnosed with Hodgkin disease in late adulthood as well. Age also
is a risk factor for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, though the majority of
cases are diagnosed in people in their 60s or older.
Family history also plays a role, as brothers and sisters of young
people with Hodgkin disease have an elevated risk, one that is especially high for the identical twin of a person with Hodgkin disease.
But the American Cancer Society still notes that a family link is still
seen in only about 5 percent of all cases of Hodgkin disease.
Some studies have suggested that exposure to certain chemicals,
most notably benzene, and certain herbicides and insecticides used
to kill weeds and insects, may be linked to an elevated risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma. However, such research is ongoing.
Patients treated with radiation therapy for other cancers may also
be at an increased risk of developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and
this risk is even greater for those treated with both radiation and
chemotherapy.
Immune system deficiencies and autoimmune diseases have also
been linked to a greater risk for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. People
who have received organ transplants are often treated with immune
system suppressants to ensure the immune system does not attack
the new organ, and such suppressants put people at a higher risk of
developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Children born with immune
system deficiencies also have an elevated risk of developing nonHodgkin lymphoma, as do people with autoimmune diseases such
as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and celiac sprue.
Lymphoma is a potentially deadly disease, but one that is often
treatable. More information about lymphoma and lymphoma treatment is available at www.cancer.org/cancer/lymphoma.

Feathering the
empty
nest
......................................................................
By Deb Bongers, MSE, LPCIT, NCC

e often think of August as the time we purchase

back-to-school supplies and finish up the last fun of
summer. It is also a time when parents, after sending
their children off to college, sometimes become empty nesters.
For parents, this can be an exciting, exhilarating time and one in
which they experience sadness and loss as well. Those two words
empty nest can conjure up a myriad of other feelings
including nostalgia, guilt, relief that theyre on their own, feeling
lost about their own next steps, worry and grief. The good news is
that all of it is normal. The better news is there are plenty of ways
you can help yourself to get through the process, to have fun and
enjoy it as well as to flourish in it.
An empty nest doesnt have any set rules for when and how it
begins or ends. Remember, everyone feels it differently and for
varying lengths of time. Some parents adjust quickly, being positive and excited about the changes to their lifestyles, while others
may encounter more difficulty dealing with the transition, the
quietness and their new roles. According to Psychology Today,
more women than men are affected by the empty nest. Mothers
typically are going through other significant life events, such as
menopause and caring for elderly parents, which can add additional stress. Fathers can have transitional pains also.

Parents usually find many different ways to cope with this

major life change. Consider some of these suggestions:
HONOR ALL YOUR FEELINGS THAT EMERGE IN THIS
EMPTINESS. Give yourself the gift of time and space to adjust

and grieve this transition. Write yourself a letter about what youre
going through or journal your feelings.
ALLOW YOURSELF TIME TO EXPLORE AND DECIDE
WHAT YOU WANT TO DO NEXT. What did you like to do

before you had children? Remember, this is a new chapter in your

life and you get to define it. Try to embrace it.
REDISCOVER AND RECONNECT WITH YOUR
PARTNER. You now have privacy, the run of the house, less

responsibility, plus much more time to explore and participate in

fun activities.
CONNECT WITH OTHER EMPTY NESTERS. They will
understand what youre going through. This might even be a way
to meet more people or reconnect with old friends. Consider
joining or creating a support group.
KEEP ACTIVE. Exercise regularly. Learn something new. Take
classes. Pursue education. Take on a new challenge either personally
or professionally. Volunteer in the community. There are many worthwhile causes and a whole gamut of organizations to connect with.

Embrace a life of wholeness ...

mind, spirit and body.

EMBRACE YOUR NEW ROLE. You will continue to be a

parent; it will just look different. Now its parenting by invitation
from your child. Encourage your child to stay in touch. Maintain
regular contact with them through texts, emails and phone. Give
them space, too!
REMEMBER TO FOCUS ON THE FUTURE. Cherish your
memories of your child and look forward to their continued
growth and independence.
Monitor how you use your time. With fewer responsibilities
and people in the house, theres more available time for you. Try
to use it productively. Make a list of things you want to accomplish
and possible time frames in which to accomplish them.
DREAM. Write down goals of things you want to do, places you
want to see, books you want to read, etc. Then do it! Keep yourself
vibrant and interesting.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Eat regular well-balanced meals,
get plenty of sleep, drink water, get together with friends, laugh
and have fun.
GET TO KNOW YOURSELF BETTER. Remember, you are
more than just a parent. Sometimes we are so busy being a parent
we lose part of ourselves. Spend time with yourself. Be your own
best friend.
RESPECT YOUR CHILDS INDEPENDENCE. Thats what
parents work hard to create in their children. Honor that and
congratulate yourself. Parenting is hard work and you were able to
launch your child. Kudos!
THINK ABOUT POSSIBLE CHANGES TO YOUR
CURRENT LIFE. What about downsizing your living arrange-

ments or trading in that family minivan for something else, something more family unfriendly? Remember, weigh options and
give those possibilities thought and time before doing them.
ASK FOR HELP IF YOU NEED IT. If you recognize that you
are struggling with this transition, talk to your doctor or a mental
health provider. You are not alone. All parents deal with this
change at some point in their lives. Accept that it looks different
for everyone.
Finally, enjoy the process; it is a process. Embrace it. It will get
easier; just give it time.

CHILDREN ARE NOT MINIATURE ADULTS continued from page 50

Stimulates motor development

Children develop their motor (movement) skills as they grow.

Massage helps ease tension and pain in developing muscles that
make motor skills possible. A study by the University of Miami
indicates that massage improved motor function in children with
Down syndrome, and the Journal of Pediatric Psychology reports
that massage improved motor ability in children infected with HIV.

Stimulates cognitive development

According to Early Child Development and Care, preschoolers

performed better on an IQ test following a 15-minute massage
than they did from reading books. The International Journal of
Neuroscience reported that massage improved function in the
brain, resulting in increased alertness as well as speed and accuracy during math problems.
Massage for children offers a variety of health benefits. It is human
nature to touch as a way of showing love and affection. This touch stimulates the body in positive ways to help it grow and develop. Massage is
beneficial at any age but because children are still developing, it can be
especially helpful for them. Parent-child massage is a wonderful way to
bond with your children while offering them health benefits.

Obesity:
The triple
threat
.................................................
By Dulcie Bosi-Schmidt

f obesity, the leading cause of preventable disease (osteoarthritis, diabetes and digestive disorders) and the leading cause
of death (heart disease, heart attack and stroke) isnt enough
to knock you off your seat, maybe this will: Obesity is now also
the leading cause of cancer, a title previously held by smoking,
according to the Associated Press. Imagine the potential for an
overweight smoker, but well save that discussion for another day.
In America, obesity and being overweight account for up to 14
percent of cancer deaths in men and 20 percent of cancer deaths
in women, according to the National Cancer Institute. Some 20
to 30 percent of common cancers such as colon, postmenopausal
breast, uterine and esophageal may be related to being overweight
and to a lack of physical activity, according to the institute, as
reported by the New York Daily News in September 2009.
If we continue to take this issue lying or sitting down, we will
continue to see the numbers grow. That is to say, if the scales dont
begin to tip in our favor, neither will our health as a nation or our
insurance rates.
How did we get here in just a few generations? Its no secret
that day-to-day life no longer resembles that of our grandparents and great-grandparents. An average adult in the early 1900s
burned roughly 500 more calories in a single day than an average
American adult does today. This was accomplished through
daily tasks such as gardening, tending to livestock and walking
to the grocer. Additionally, adults from preceding generations
consumed roughly 300 calories less in a day from whole foods
than the average American adult does today from a combination
of whole and processed foods. Our ancestors consumed more of
their calories from fat by way of high-fat proteins and whole dairy
products, often leading to cholesterol issues, as opposed to weight
issues. Again, this is a topic for another day.
An excess of a mere 100 calories per day equates to a 10-poundper-year weight gain, and 800 calories an 80-pound weight gain
annually. This is consistent with the trend weve seen in America.
54

Natures Pathways | August 2014

Obesity is now also the

leading cause of cancer,
a title previously held by
smoking, according to
the Associated Press.
Today, overweight Americans (two-thirds of the population) are
23 pounds overweight on average, up from 17 pounds in 2007
according to Gallup.
Although the numbers are staggering, research also tells us that
fear, force and facts provide little motivation. If we are to change
what has come to be known as the new normal, well have to
stand up and fight this triple threat known as obesity; if not for
ourselves, then for a loved one.
Dont ignore the proverbial ketchup on the corner of ones
mouth. Let your loved ones know you care about their longevity
and want them to be healthy for many years to come. Help them
find a better way by encouraging small changes to their diet and
daily activity and following up with them. Let them know youve
noticed changes and positively reinforce these changes by asking
them how these small changes have impacted their life. If you or
your loved one seems stuck in a holding pattern, seeking coaching
can help.

Protect your
child through
immunization
......................................................................
By Michelle Vanden Heuvel, RN, BSN, MSM

he back-to-school season will soon be upon us once again.

In addition to ensuring your children have all of the necessary supplies and the latest fashions to return to school
with, it is also important to be sure they are protected from the
preventable diseases they may become exposed to.
There are many diseases no longer common in the United States
such as polio, measles, diphtheria, whooping cough (pertussis),
mumps, rubella, tetanus and rotavirus due to the availability of
vaccinations, according to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC). Some parents have the misunderstanding that
since the aforementioned diseases are not prevalent in the United
States, it is not necessary to vaccinate their children against them.
Unfortunately, that is not the case.
Children and adults can become exposed to diseases in a variety
of ways, including traveling to countries that have a higher instance
of disease, or simply coming in contact with someone else who
was exposed during international travel. According to the CDC,
there have been 477 cases of measles reported from Jan. 1, 2014
through June 13, 2014, with the origin for 97 percent of those cases
from other countries. Measles is highly contagious, so much so
that 90 percent of people who come in contact with someone who
is infected will also contract the disease, the CDC reports. While
measles itself may not seem overly worrisome, it can cause other
serious complications, especially in those who are either under 5
years of age or over 20 years old, up to and including death.
Because parents cannot always physically protect their children
from becoming exposed to diseases such as measles, one of the
best means of protection is to ensure that children are current
with their vaccinations. For instance, immunity to measles can be
provided with a series of two vaccinations, one at 12-15 months
of age and a second at 4-6 years of age, according to the CDC.
Not only will that vaccine offer protection from measles, but
also mumps, rubella (German measles) and sometimes varicella
(chicken pox) as well, depending on the vaccine that is administered. In addition, to be sure a child is immune prior to international travel, a simple blood test can confirm there are the
www.naturespathways.com

appropriate amount of antibodies present in the childs system.

Due to the impact vaccinations have had on the instances of
contagious diseases, many schools primary, secondary and
post-secondary require proof of immunity or medical and/or
religious documentation stating the student is unable to become
vaccinated. Some may consider this an infringement on personal
choices and beliefs, but those requirements have been put in place
as an attempt to provide students, staff and faculty with protection.
Ultimately when making the decision of whether or not to vaccinate, it is important to obtain information from credible resources
such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Escape back
pain this fall
with the right
backpack
knowledge
........................................................................
By Dr. David A. Lindley

he use of backpacks has become increasingly common

among students of all ages. According to the U.S. Census
Bureau, more than 79 million children, teens and adults
were enrolled in school throughout the country in the fall of 2011.
Thats a lot of backpacks.
Along with the increase in backpack usage, there has been a
corresponding increase in backpack-related back injuries. In fact,
the Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that more
than 24,500 people were treated for backpack-related back injuries in hospitals and doctors offices in 2012. Nearly 10,000 of
those people were children between the ages of 5 and 18.
Now that many students are transporting computers or other
electronic devices in their backpacks, as well as books, these
statistics should come as no surprise. And while heavy, over-filled
backpacks are a big concern, there are other factors leading to
the abundance of medical treatment for injuries associated with
wearing a backpack.
Peer pressure can also contribute to backpack problems,
because many style-conscious students choose to use only one
shoulder strap, or they position the packs too far down on their
backs. However, packs that incorrectly displace their weight also
put students at increased risk for musculoskeletal injuries.
These five simple tips can keep students (and their parents)
from unnecessary pain and possible injury due to improperly
toting or lifting a school bag.
FIND THE RIGHT BAG. Backpacks are made for people of
different sizes. Its important that the one your scholar carries
58

Natures Pathways | August 2014

fits properly. The backpack should have padded bands to go over

the shoulders, and preferably the bands should be wider than 2
inches. The pack shouldnt be any wider than the carriers body.
ADJUST THE STRAPS. Once you have a backpack, make sure
that the adjustable straps are set up properly. The top of the pack
should be just an inch or two below the base of the neck, with the
bottom of the pack just above the waistline. This ensures that most
of the weight is balanced along the strong and stable parts of your
shoulders and back. A backpack that sags too low causes extra
strain on the back.
PACK PROPERLY. Distribute the objects in the pack from the
heaviest being closest to the body and the lightest away from the
body. This provides less strain on the shoulders and back. Be sure
to avoid packing items that are unnecessary. The bag should be
less than 15 percent of the weight of the person carrying it.
TWO IS BETTER THAN ONE. Wear both straps. Many children like to sling their backpacks over one shoulder, but the extra
weight along one side of the body can lead to painful shoulder,
back and hip issues over time due to developing a curved spine.
www.naturespathways.com

Distribute the objects in the pack

from the heaviest being closest
to the body and the lightest away
from the body. This provides less
strain on the shoulders and back.
Backpacks that have a chest or waist strap can help allocate the
weight even more evenly for an even less harmful haul.
LIFT WITH YOUR KNEES. Loaded with heavy math, science
and history books, backpacks can get heavy to lift with just one
arm. When students put on their backpacks, they should make
sure to pick up their packs with both hands and lift with their
knees. Hunching over and picking up 15 to 20 pounds of dead
weight can quickly cause back pain.
By following these simple tips, you will be on your way to
another successful school year. Should you experience persistent
back or muscle pain, a consultation with a family physician or a
pain management specialist is recommended.

ou have been reading Grandma Roses articles

about food for diabetics and blood sugar control
in Natures Pathways for about a year now. Are
you ready to take serious action to get your blood sugar
under control?
Diabetic drugs keep blood sugar down, but they
contribute to heart disease and dont prevent complications. Eating the right kind of foods in the right amount
does help you maintain your health.
It is difficult for a person who is not diabetic to help
you as they cant know how foods affect your blood
sugar. Other diabetics can be very helpful, as they have
accumulated information from their own experience.
These individuals can be very helpful, especially to those
whose blood sugar test strips are limited by cost or insurance restrictions. (Testing strips cost around $1 each and
the cost gets high very quickly.) Although our bodies are
all unique, we have much in common and can benefit
from other diabetics experience and testing.
Having been diabetic for over 20 years, I understand
what youre going through. Saturday, Sept. 6 at 2 p.m.
is the first diabetic support and education group meeting. Meetings will be held Saturdays in Natural Expressions 100% Whole
Grain Bakerys kitchen. We will share information, cook, bake and
do whatever is needed to get your blood sugar going in the right
direction. Meetings are free of charge and last about an hour. Please
register at naturalexpressions1.com.
As Grandma Rose, owner of Natural Expressions 100% Whole
Grain Bakery, I am here to help if you are motivated. My research
will be freely shared. I have done the research and walked the
walk. It is my mission to walk side by side with you until you can
walk alone or, better yet, beside someone who needs what you
need now.

Choices in
childbirth:
Part
3
....................................................
By Chelsie Towns

eve looked at choosing a

care provider and managing
labor pain in the previous two
Choices in childbirth articles; Part 3 will
discuss other considerations for the childbearing year.
CHIROPRACTIC care has been shown
to help women experiencing infertility
conceive. During pregnancy, a chiropractor can help alleviate common complaints,
including joint pain, headaches, constipation, reflux and more. Chiropractic helps
the pelvis open and encourages proper fetal
positioning, sometimes helping a breech
or transverse baby to move head down. It
has even been shown to reduce the pain
and length of labor! Look for a chiropractor skilled in the Webster technique.
PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION has
been practiced throughout history in one
way or another, and has made a real resurgence recently. Its said to help increase
milk supply, encourage bonding with baby,
prevent or lessen postpartum depression,
restore vitality, and more. Speaking with a
knowledgeable placenta service provider will
help you decide if placentaphy (consumption
of the placenta) is right for you and which
options are best suited for your needs.
DELAYED CORD CLAMPING ensures
delivery of most of a babys blood back
to the baby following delivery and comes
with a host of benefits, including better
temperature regulation, lower incidence
of anemia, better respiratory outcomes
and lower incidence of jaundice. There are
www.naturespathways.com

no risks to delayed cord clamping. Outof-hospital practitioners practice delayed

cord clamping, but you may need to inform
your doctor of your wishes prior to labor
and have your doula or partner remind the
doctor shortly before the baby is born.
ROUTINE CIRCUMCISION is on the
decline nationwide. Parents are becoming
informed about the many possible negative outcomes, both immediate and long
term. There are no medical benefits to
circumcision, and any condition for which
the surgery is considered a preventative
is rare and/or something generally treatable with medication. The procedure is
not pain-free, even with local anesthetic,
and can cause the baby to have difficulties
nursing afterward. Intact boys are becoming the norm in the U.S. (over half of boys
today remain intact, according to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), and caring for them is easy just
wipe like a finger, never retract. At the
natural age of retraction (usually between
3 and puberty), rinsing with plain water
while bathing is sufficient. Get more information on www.SavingSons.org.
BREASTFEEDING does not come as
naturally as women often think. Consider
attending a La Leche League meeting or
speaking with a lactation consultant prior
to the birth for handy tips and important information for your first days and
weeks nursing. Check out one of the many
books and websites on breastfeeding, or
ask a friend or family member who has

successfully breastfed for information and

support, or ask your doula or midwife.
Remember that babies stomachs are very
small for the first few days. Its normal
for them to nurse frequently for the first
several months and that does not mean
you dont have enough milk, so avoid
supplementing with formula, as that can
cause problems with establishing a supply.

Protein:
Nutrition for
the entire
family
.............................................................
By Brandon Hintz and Diana Jaworski

thletes exercise on a regular basis and their protein levels

become depleted, which makes protein supplementation
critical. But protein and good sports nutrition isnt just
for athletes; protein is also critical for dieters, fitness enthusiasts
and just about everybody, for that matter. As a direct precursor to
building lean muscle, the content from high quality protein will
help muscles recover faster by increasing the levels of protein in
the body. For those dieting and wanting to lose some extra fat,
protein can be very useful: a good intake of protein balances
blood sugar levels, while carbohydrates cause blood sugar levels
to fluctuate. There are many different types of protein. Knowing
the best protein powder for you is crucial, as each type of protein
is broken down and absorbed at a different rate. The quality of a
protein is also critical, as this determines how well your body can
utilize it a factor termed biological value.

What are some benefits of

whey protein shakes?

Its important to note that drinking whey protein shakes will not
produce a quick fix. Its not something youll feel overnight. If
you are consistent with the intake of whey protein shakes and a
complementary diet, though, you will notice a quicker recovery
time after an intense workout. After a workout, you are sore the
next day and need to feed those muscles. Drinking whey protein
shakes on a regular basis will help your muscles get the protein
they need to recover, and this is definitely something you will feel
over time. Whey protein powder used in shakes or other liquids
is something that should definitely be a staple for anyone with a
program that involves lifting weights.
To keep things on the leaner side, many people use whey protein
powder mixed in a glass of cold water. It mixes or shakes up in a
cup very easily. Some people mix a whey protein shake with milk,
62

Natures Pathways | August 2014

fruit, berries and other similar ingredients.

Some alternatives to whey protein shakes are to use whey
protein powder in baking. You can use whey to make cookies,
pudding and other tasty treats. Also, many people use it in
smoothies. Smoothies can incorporate nonfat yogurt, along with
berries, fruits, etc. Other ideas include using vanilla-flavored
whey protein powder with oatmeal for breakfast.
One misconception is that drinking whey protein shakes will
cause you to gain weight. You need enough protein to sustain a
vigorous exercise program. If you are not getting enough protein
to sustain your level of exercise, you are doing your body and your
physique a disservice. The more lean muscle you have, the more
body fat you will burn when you are sedentary. The right kind of
protein powder will not bulk you up. Shakes (mainly cold water
and whey protein powder) are a lean source of protein, averaging
just over 100 calories each. Whey protein shakes are clean and
efficient.

Types of protein powder

1. Whey: Whey is a complete protein made from milk thats easily

digestible (unless you have a lactose or dairy allergy, in which

case you should steer clear). Whey can limit muscle breakdown and help with muscle repair and rebuilding, especially
when consumed within 60 minutes of your sweat session, when
enzyme and protein synthesis is most active. Look for whey
protein isolate not concentrate as it contains the highest
protein concentration (90 to 95 percent) and very little fat.
2. Casein: Another milk protein, casein is absorbed by the body
much more slowly than whey. This means its a good choice for
meal replacements, which helps you stay fuller longer, or to
take right before bed when it will supply the body with protein
throughout the night when you enter a catabolic state.
www.naturespathways.com

3. Soy: As a complete plant-based protein, soy is a great option

for vegans or anyone whos lactose intolerant. Soy protein is

highly processed and some studies have linked soy consumption in women with a history of estrogen positive cancer to an
increased risk of breast cancer. If you do choose soy, consume
it in moderation, and be sure to look for labels that read soy
protein isolate, which contains more protein, isoflavones and
less cholesterol and fat compared to soy protein concentrate.
4. Brown rice: While rice is mostly composed of carbohydrate, it
contains a small amount of protein, which is extracted to create
brown rice protein. Brown rice is plant-based; its not a complete
protein, so pair it with other plant-based proteins like pea powder
to complete the essential amino acid profile. Brown rice protein is
hypo-allergic and easily digested, making it an excellent alternative
for anyone with a sensitive stomach or allergies to soy or dairy.
5. Pea: This plant-based protein is highly digestible and has a fluffy
texture. Plus pea protein is high in glutamic acid, which helps
convert carbs into energy so they wont be stored as fat. Pea
protein is plant-based; it isnt a complete protein, so it needs to
be paired with other vegan sources of protein like brown rice.

The nittygritty of
growing your
own food
Hydroponic grow systems of
all sizes and for any plant

By Doug Schmidt

hen embarking on the adventure of growing your own

food, how exactly do you decide what to grow? There
are a few things youll need to consider. Ask yourself:
Do I want to grow outside, indoors or both?
How much space do I have?
What would I like to eat fresh?

Where should you grow?

Salad greens can be grown outdoors in the spring, summer,

and fall, or indoors year-round. You can plant several species of
lettuce, kale, spinach or any herb. They will do well in a partial sun
location outdoors for most of the summer if it doesnt get too hot.
Indoors is a more consistent environment for growing greens, but
it will require lighting.

What container should you choose?

The area you select for the grow space will dictate what size system
fits your needs. The size of the grow space can vary from a 5-gallon
pail container to a wash tub to a larger area.
The size of the grow area container limits the amount of plants
it can hold. You must consider root area space, including vertical
space. Does the plant you are considering have deep or shallow
roots? Salad greens are shallow rooted, while tomatoes and
peppers are deep rooted. In hydroponic gardening, plants can be
grown very close together because the system delivers nutrients

efficiently, allowing roots to stay compact.

Additionally, the area above the grow bed container must have
room for the plant to grow and space for harvesting. Horizontal
plants like lettuce and kale will need about 16 inches of vertical
space to grow and harvest. Tomatoes and peppers require more
space vertically and also some type of support for the plants as
they grow taller and heavy with fruit.
A good container and size of grow bed to begin with is a wash
tub. It is about 4 square feet, which can support salad greens for a
small family. The size can be duplicated for rotating crops as you
need.
I hope this gives you a sense of the amount of space you would
need. Having fresh, healthy and safe food available for your family
is the goal.
Grow systems have the following components:
Containers (including grow bed and reservoir)
Grow media, such as clay pellets or stones/gravel
Pumps (water and air)
pH balance and nutrients
Stands and supports
Indoor lighting
Electrical requirements
If you have plant containers that were used for soil, they could
be converted for hydroponic use. Crocks, pails, and tubs are just
some of the grow beds you can create. Retrofitting systems is lots
of fun. The original and neat things that can be used to grow

Why choose hydroponics?

I think of growing with hydroponics as extending the growing

season to a year-round adventure, some of the benefits are:
Raised beds (no need to bend down)
Units can be sized for the space you have available
Weeds arent a problem
Grow lighting indoors is easy
Fresh food with no waste
Organic and safe your food is grown in your own home
Try hydroponics; you will be amazed how easy it is to feed your
family. Plus, you can start any time of the year.

Treating tension
and migraine
headaches with
acupressure

By Courtney Cowie, MA, LMBT

ccording to U.S. News and World Report, headaches are

the most common cause of absenteeism from work and
school. There are many types of headaches, but the two
most common types of headaches I deal with on a daily basis are
tension headaches and migraine headaches. There are key differences between the two that are important to understand when
approaching these headaches from a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapeutic bodywork perspective.
Of the two, tension headaches are most common. Tension
headaches usually develop gradually into a mild to moderate
steady ache that affects one part of the head and may affect the
entire head. The ache results from muscle tension triggered by
the stress produced by feelings of anxiety, worry, depression or
frustration. From a therapeutic bodywork standpoint, I notice a
strong correlation between neck and upper shoulder tension and
occipital tension headaches felt at the back of the head at the base
of the skull.
In most cases, working on the neck and shoulder muscles and
holding acupressure or trigger points in these areas can get these
muscles to release, providing significant relief. From a TCM standpoint, kneading and applying steady pressure into a set of acupressure points at the base of the skull can also provide significant relief
for tension headaches felt at either the back of the head or at the
temples. Regular work on tense muscles in the neck and shoulders
can dramatically reduce the frequency of tension headaches, eliminating the need to take medication or sick time off from work.
Migraine headaches are severe, throbbing headaches that can
affect one or both sides of the head and are usually felt behind
the eyes or at the temples. They usually produce nausea and
vomiting and sensitivity to sound and light. Migraine headaches
www.naturespathways.com

also can result from muscular tension associated with stress, but
commonly result from hormonal fluctuations in women, excessive dilation or constriction of blood vessels in the brain, or from
unknown factors.
Chinese medicine treats migraine headaches as an energy
imbalance problem related to excess heat in one or more of the
meridians of the body. Holding influential acupressure point
combinations for one to two minutes can help balance energy
and open up energy blockages, which are usually associated with
the stabbing pain commonly felt with migraine headaches. While
some migraine headaches occur on a predictable basis, such as
those associated with a womans menstrual cycle, others do not.
While many migraine sufferers turn to over-the-counter painrelief medication once a migraine sets in, in reality this medication may not be effective in reducing the pain. Few people know
that a 20- to 30-minute therapeutic bodywork session that works
specifically with medical massage techniques and acupressure
points indicated for reducing the pain associated with migraine
headaches can be an effective, natural option for providing relief
and helping get an individual back to a functioning state. Whenever possible, I teach my clients how to work one or two acupressure points indicated for their specific type of headache in order
to arm them with self-care tools they can use at home to mitigate
pain between sessions and to support the treatment process.
Courtney Cowie, MA, LMBT, is the owner of Ki to Health Therapeutic Bodywork, located in downtown Neenah. Her practice is
rooted in traditional Chinese medical massage (tui na) techniques
integrated with acupressure. To learn more about the conditions

Remember
to reuse
and recycle
in prepping
to go back
to
school

By Jennifer Semrau

ach August, parents prepare children to go back to school.

Theres excitement, anxiety and a lengthy school supply
list! Dont forget the reuse and recycle principles in getting
ready to go back to school.
The first place to look for items on your school supply list is
in the bag of leftover supplies from last year. Dont rush out and
buy new supplies when items such as rulers, binders, supply
cases, pencil sharpeners, scissors, protractors, calculators, clipboards and headphones can often be reused for many years. Some
materials, such as pens or markers, might last two years as well.

The first place to look for

items on your school supply
list is in the bag of leftover
supplies from last year.
Backpacks and lunchboxes can also often be used for multiple
years. However, if you are in need of a new backpack or lunchbox, rummage sales or thrift stores often feature gently used items
during the summer.
If reuse is not possible, look for school supplies made with recycled materials. A search for recycled backpacks yields an assortment of choices, from backpacks made with recycled PETE plastic
to some made from recycled rice bags to others made from recycled
potato chip bags. Paper supplies, such as notebooks, folders, filler
paper, index cards and composition books, can all be acquired with
recycled content. The higher the percentage of recycled content,
the better. Also pay attention to whether recycled content is postconsumer or pre-consumer. While both sources are better than
using virgin materials, post-consumer recycled content is produced
from recyclables actually recycled by the general public, creating
a valuable market for those materials. Pre-consumer materials
include scraps from the manufacturing process.
Nonpaper supplies can also be made with recycled materials.
Pens, highlighters and markers can all be made from recycled CD
www.naturespathways.com

cases or cell phone plastic. Did you know pencils and rulers can
be made from recycled newsprint, blue jeans and even recycled
currency? Paper clips can be made from 100 percent recycled steel.
Consider other environmentally friendly attributes as well, such
as nontoxic, low- or nonvolatile organic compounds (VOCs) and
low odor to reduce the chemical content of school supplies. For
instance, soy crayons, nontoxic paint and low-VOC markers are all
available. Look for solar-powered options for calculators or watches
and use rechargeable batteries in portable electronic devices.
As you can see, there are an abundance of options to green
your back-to-school experience. Check out our resource guide
below for sources or inquire at your local office supply store for
environmentally friendly, nontoxic and recycled-content supplies.

ust like taxes, nobody enjoys pain.

Yet, nearly everyone will go through
it in their life. In fact, chronic pain
affects more people than diabetes, heart
disease and cancer, combined.
Luckily, the caring doctors and staff at
Advanced Pain Management (APM) know
your pain. Marco Araujo, M.D., has been
helping patients relieve their pain since
2007 in Green Bay. The demand for treating pain in the area has increased so much
that the office has added additional doctors
and staff, as well as moved and expanded.
While simpler treatments like ice, heat
and reduced activities can provide relief
from back pain for some, more persistent pain that lasts longer than four weeks
generally requires more attention and
treatment. Thats where APM comes in.
Thousands of people have already found
the answer to their pain problems at APM.
From back pain and neck pain, to knee and
shoulder pain, to spinal stenosis and fibromyalgia, the doctors at APM know how to
pinpoint the source of pain and find the
right treatment option for each specific
person.
70

Natures Pathways | August 2014

With a multidisciplinary team of physicians, APM has the experience to diagnose

and treat pain to help patients restore their
quality of life. Patients can find a comprehensive array of innovative, minimally
invasive treatments and technology to
treat their pain.
One of these treatments is radiofrequency ablation, which uses small electrodes to heat the tissue near painful nerves
to dull the pain. Other treatments include
epidural injections, nerve blocks, and
sacroiliac joint injections. Recent studies
have shown that such minimally invasive
procedures can help patients regain mobility and functioning, allowing patients to
get back to work quickly and back to their
active lifestyles.
The physicians of APM also offer minimally invasive disc procedures, neurostimulation therapy and intrathecal drug
delivery.
Not only does APM treat patients with
a multitude of pain-reducing options,
it believes in preventive care by educating patients with online resources. These
online e-books and guides can be easily

viewed and downloaded from the APM

website, www.apmhealth.com. In addition, APM has a blog that features weekly
updates including news, healthy living tips
and expert information.
APM is one of the largest pain management groups in the country, with 29
board-certified/eligible physicians offering the most advanced techniques for pain
control. APM physicians operate out of
more than 40 locations in Wisconsin, as
well as in Mankato, Minnesota.

How will
you choose
to live with
diabetes or
prediabetes?

By Rosalie Misco

Now 20 years later, I take no

drugs, am at a normal weight
and have no complications
due to diabetes in my body.

ll type 2 diabetes diet education and treatment

comes through the American Diabetes Association. Those who educate you and treat you must
follow their guidelines.
Their guidelines are based on the assumption that
diabetics are sedentary, obese and unmotivated and
would prefer drugs over lifestyle change. The American
Diabetes Association has done no research on foods or lifestyle
for diabetics. Their stance is you can eat what everyone else eats
as long as you count the carbs. Not all carbohydrates are the
same, however, and they dont spell out the difference.
When I was diagnosed with diabetes 20 years ago, I wanted to
be told what the ideal diet and lifestyle for a diabetic was. With
that knowledge, I wanted to choose to what degree I wanted to
change my lifestyle and diet to prevent the many complications
that are associated with diabetes.
When I learned that the choice was being made for me based
on the above assumption and I just needed to take the drugs, I got
very angry. I took matters into my own hands. I tested every food
I ate to see how it affected my blood sugar. I also tested different kinds of exercise and how it affected my blood sugar. Now 20
years later, I take no drugs, am at a normal weight and have no
complications due to diabetes in my body.
I have done the research and walked the walk. It is my mission
to walk side by side with you until you can walk alone or better
yet, beside someone who needs what you need now. In all of my
studying, among other things, I came across Hi-maize 260 resistant starch fiber. It lowers cholesterol, prevents blood sugar rise
and weight gain.

omething about my mother attracts solicitors. It may be

the fact that she talks politely and in an interested tone of
voice, which usually results in unneeded purchases. Her last
purchase was a foot spa that did her no appreciable good. It did,
however, encourage her to go to a foot hygienist, as she developed
foot fungus.
The foot hygienist was my idea; I had seen an ad for treatment
of foot fungus in the Color Mailer. Mother agreed and I made an
appointment for her to see Suzie Bellavance, professional foot care
hygienist from Quebec.
We were invited to Suzies home on the east side of Appleton,
where we were seated in a shiny, clean and comfortably appointed
office. My mother was taken with Suzies interest in her. She
enjoyed Suzies French Canadian accent and chatted throughout
the entire appointment. Suzie took the time to really understand
my mothers concerns and the appointment took over an hour.

about working with the elderly and others who want to make foot
care part of a healthier lifestyle!
My mother readily accepted Suzies evaluation and education,
and I was grateful. The genuine charm that Suzie exuded resulted
in some real changes in my mothers care for her feet. I had not
seen a response like this before.
After a foot problem arrived on my own doorstep, I began
receiving services from Suzie as well. I even referred my grandson, whose ingrown toe nails were giving him grief on and off the
football field.
I continued to share my satisfaction with my own foot care
in Suzies capable hands, resulting in more family members and
friends seeking her heavenly services! They too had wonderful
experiences.
It is my opinion that word of mouth from a trusted source is
the best way to learn about many things in life. I extend to you an
invitation to call Heavenly Foot Care, LLC, as you too may benefit
from Suzies amazing services.
I never really resolved the problem with mother and solicitors.
Instead, I accepted the idea that the hospitable persona she had
ought never be changed.

Tips and
tricks to train
memory
.................................................................
By Dr. Jody Jedlicka

emory is one of many cognitive

skills that can be trained with
mental exercises. Practicing
memory techniques will make them easier
and will lead to a better, stronger memory
over all.

Make memories
memorable

Many memory-building techniques rely on

mnemonics, or learning techniques that use
things that are easy to remember to represent things that are harder to remember.

Our brains easily recall information that

is personal or emotional, so assigning
strong multi-sensory associations aids in
remembering.
Heres an example. Start with four items on
a grocery list: bacon, toilet paper, eggs and
lettuce. To link them in a memorable way,
picture a sizzling strip of bacon dripping hot
grease onto the next item on your list: toilet
paper. The animated toilet paper roll is in
agony. Hes burned all the way through and
is desperately trying to patch himself up
with egg whites. Stuck in the gooey mess of

broken shells is an angry head of lettuce thats

trying to escape before her leaves wilt.

Use a memory palace

The memory palace is a powerful technique

thats routinely used by memory champions. It uses our ability to remember familiar
places.
The palace simply refers to any place
that you know well and through which you
can easily visualize a standard route. To use
your route to work as a memory palace, first
visualize the route in detail and mentally
mark places where you will put memories. First you go past your mailbox, then
past the dilapidated Victorian on the right,
through the field with horses, then past the
windmill. Then, imagine taking the route
again and on each memory mark, visualize
what you want to remember in vivid, ludicrous, funny detail.
Lets use our grocery list again. First,
imagine the sizzling bacon bouncing on
your mailbox to greet you good morning.
At your second memory mark the dilapidated Victorian giant lettuce meteors
are bouncing off the roof. Next, the field
of horses has been recently TPed. At the
fourth memory mark, the windmill is
upside down, whisking a massive cauldron
of foamy egg whites.
With your own customizations, you can
use this technique to remember long lists
of almost anything. Its great for outlining a
speech or project and jogging your memory
mid-stream.
www.naturespathways.com

A better memory
means less time
searching for
things and can lead
to an improved
understanding of
academic material or
instructions, better
grades or work
performance, and
more opportunities.
Use acrostics

An acrostic is a poem or word in which

the first letter, syllable or word of each line,
paragraph or word spells out a message.
The mnemonic for remembering planets is
a well-known example. Take the first letter

www.naturespathways.com

of each planet in order and make a sentence

with them as the first letters of each word.
Marys Violet Eyes Made John Sit Up
Nice reminds us that the order of planets
from the sun is Mercury, Venus, Earth,
Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
In our grocery list example, you can simply
remember that you need BLET for bacon,
lettuce, eggs and toilet paper.

Chunk it

Chunking is the practice of breaking big

amounts of information into chunks the
brain can handle. The average brain can
hold about seven pieces of information
before it gets overwhelmed. Social security, credit card and telephone numbers
are all chunked. Consider the number
9208822006. As a 10-digit number, its
overwhelming. But when chunked into
920-882-2006, it becomes a much more
efficient way to memorize the number.

Teach it

Teaching someone else anything will help

you remember it better!
Is all this starting to sound like too much

work and youre tempted to just rely on a

pen and paper? Resist the urge! A better
memory means less time searching for
things and can lead to an improved understanding of academic material or instructions, better grades or work performance,
and more opportunities.
While these methods can help improve
memory, personalized one-on-one brain
training is proven to bring dramatic
improvement to long- and short-term
memory skills and the other cognitive
skills that make up intelligence.
A study of 2009 LearningRx results shows graduates
under the age of 25 gained an average of 3.8 years
ability in short-term memory and 4.3 years ability in
long-term memory. To learn more, visit www.learningrx.com/Appleton or call 920-882-2006.
Dr. Jody Jedlicka is an audiologist
specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of auditory processing disorders
and the director of LearningRx of the
Fox Cities. She received her Doctor of
Audiology degree from the Arizona
School of Health Sciences and has worked with children
in a variety of settings. LearningRx trains the underlying learning and reading skills necessary for easy and
efficient learning. Find out more about LearningRx at

andelion greens are edible and are

a rich source of vitamin A. Dandelion has been used in many traditional medical systems, including Native
American and traditional Arabic medicine. Historically, dandelion was most
commonly used to treat liver diseases,
kidney diseases and spleen problems. Less
commonly, dandelion was used to treat
digestive problems and skin conditions.
Today, traditional or folk uses of dandelion
include use as a liver or kidney tonic, as a
diuretic and for minor digestive problems.
The leaves and roots of the dandelion, or

the whole plant, are used fresh or dried in

teas, capsules or extracts. Dandelion leaves
are used in salads or as a cooked green, and
the flowers are used to make wine.

What the science says

There is no compelling scientific evidence

for using dandelion as a treatment for any
medical condition.

Side effects and cautions

Dandelion use is generally considered safe.

are your loved ones

protected?

Statistics show that 55-60% of U.S. citizens do not have an estate plan which means that
someone other than you will determine your loved ones future.
An estate plan is about more than your financial worth, its about peace of mind and taking
care of the people you love. If you already have an estate plan prepared, revisit it. Or let us help
create a plan designed with the needs of you and your family in mind.
