" That day, the wo r d we were to rhyme wi t h was " bel l . " So, as a di l i gent student, I wrote down al l the wor ds I knew that r hymed wi t h " be l l " : cell, del l , fel l , gel, hel l . . . and that's where I got into trouble. S uddenl y, the teacher was very upset wi t h me: I had wri t t en a naughty wor d! A n d even worse: I was too naive to know it was a naughty wor d! But I di d know that she was not happy wi t h meand that was enough to put me into an hypnoti c state. I want ed to get out of trouble so I "went i nsi de" to f i nd a way. A n d I di d. I hypnot i sed her by sayi ng there was a place called Hel l ' s Gate near Manhat t an, you coul d f i nd i t on any map, bl ah, bl ah, bl ah, and she let me off the hook. I n case you t hi nk this a quaint and dated story, flash forward fifty years to December 2004. It's the mor ni ng report on the F O X " news " net work 1 . The anchorwoman i s ranting and rambl i ng about the "i nappropri at e l anguage" she' d heard a reporter use on another network, but she can't bri ng herself to utter the offendi ng wor d. E ven her co-anchor can't make sense of what she's t ryi ng to sayso he asks her. Yo u can see her maki ng pictures in her mi nd, but she sti l l can't utter the wor d. So she points up t oward the cei l i ng and says, "The. . . opposi t e. . . of. . . heaven. " 1 Whi c h has a wel l -deserved reputati on for whol eheart ed and blatant support of "evangel i cal " Chr i s t i ani t y. . . 7 8 Energized Hypnosis Aft er al l these years, has anyt hi ng changed? That anxi ety-ri dden, magi cal -t hi nki ng teacher is sti l l terrified of " he l l " and, apparently, she expects the rest of us to pay the price for her i nsani ty. Mot her. Sunrise. Love. Fuck. Shit. Cunt . Has it ever struck you how downri ght wei r d it is that the mere fact of readi ng or heari ng (or wri ti ng! ) these wor ds evokes such a mul t i t ude of thoughts and feelings and memories? That we seem l i teral l y trapped by l an- guage and in a state of hypnosi s most of the time? But language can also be used to spri ng the trap. That is Hyat t and I wema's goal wi t h Energized Hypnosis: to teach you to use hypnosi s to free yourself from your hyp- notic state. H o w does he do this? I n part, t hrough infor- mat i on and technique. But, more i mport ant l y, by embed- di ng the method in the message. A n d that is what makes this a "non-book. " "Books" generally purport to provi de the reader wi t h conscious information. But this non-book is designed to act on a much more power f ul part of you: your unconscious. As you "read, " you may notice that the authors deliberately move you in and out of a hypnot i c state... Wo r d pl ay. Deliberate mi s-spel l i ngs. O d d sentence constructions. Wat ch what they do to you. Let it happen. L ear n. . . Energized Hypnosis is the fourt h pi l l ar of Dr . Hyat t ' s formul a for Undoi ng: 1) P i l l ar I : Energi zed Me di t at i on. Foremost among Dr . Hyat t ' s books on this topic is, of course, Undoing Yourself With Energized Meditation and Other Devices. (As you read Undoing Yourself, don' t forget to remember to take note of some of these valuable "other devices.") The Techniques for Undoing Yourself C Ds and the Radical Undoing series of C Ds and DVDs expand on (and demonstrate!) many of the methods described in Undoing. Al s o of great val ue is Energized Hypnosis 9 To Lie Is Human: Not Getting Caught Is Divine (Dr. Hyat t ' s favorite). Yo u wi l l f i nd other valuable tech- niques in Rebels & Devils: The Psychology of Liberation; The Psychopath's Bible; The Black Book; and The Psy- chopath's Notebook. 2) P i l l ar II: Tant ra (aka Sex Magi ck). See Secrets of Western Tantra: The Sexuality of the Middle Path; Sex Magic, Tantra & Tarot: The Way of the Secret Lover; Taboo: Sex, Religion & Magic; Tantra Without Tears; and Enochian World of Aleister Crowley: Enochian Sex Magick. 3) P i l l ar III: Endl ess Me di t at i on (Mahasatipatthana: the Ul t i mat e Observer). Mahasatipatthana has been described as "the type of mi ndful ness that pene- trates repeatedly into the body, feelings and mi nd, and sees the actual reality that is occurri ng. Thi s is in contrast to the normal unmi ndf ul state in whi c h the mi nd ski ps or bounces over these phenomena. " Dr . Hyat t has not wri t t en much about The Endless Medi t at i on because, as he puts it, "there just isn' t much t o say." Yo u wi l l , however, f i nd useful i nfor- mat i on i n the " Yo u Medi t at i on" that Dr . Hyat t pre- sents on the Energized Hypnosis and Radical Undoing DVDs . 4) P i l l ar IV: E ner gi zed Hypnos i s . I n addi t i on to this present non-book, you wi l l f i nd valuable techniques in Undoing Yourself With Energized Meditation and Other Devices (di d you remember not to forget those "other devices"?), the Techniques for Undoing Yourself C Ds , the Radical Undoing series of C Ds and DVDs and, especially the Energized Hypnosis C Ds and DVDs whi c h supplement and complement this non- book. Dr . Hyat t also recommends that you read Monsters & Magical Sticks: There's No Such Thing As Hypnosis by Steven Hel l er, P h. D. It wi l l give you a great deal of i nformat i on about how hypnosi s works as we l l as many useful techniques. For a more aca- demic approach, see The Psycho-biology of Mind-Body 10 Energized Hypnosis Healing by Ernest Rossi , P h. D. , one of the foremost researchers i n Eri cksoni an hypnosi s. 2 A n d remember: enjoy your self as you don' t read this non-book. Ni c k Tharcher sai l i ng somewhere in the Cari bbean, Ma r c h 2007 2 Hyat t wor ke d wi t h Rossi for four years i n L os Angel es and took courses in hypnosi s at the Uni ver s i t y of Cal i f or ni a at I rvine. He also is a graduate of the Hypnos i s Mot i vat i on I nstitute. Foreword Regular books are designed to i mpart opi ni on, and if you are l ucky, some useful i nformati on. This is a non-book, and was deliberately designed to have an i mpact on you, the reader, and to begin to create change in your life. Yo u may also f i nd that the i nformat i on contained wi t hi n i s useful as we l l . As you read this non-book you wi l l be goi ng deeper and becomi ng more awake at the same timethe trick is, this non-book is the method, the technique Being a non-book about energi zed hypnosi s, it contains language patterns si mi l ar to those used in hypnosi s, so please enjoy breaking the rules of grammar and spel l i ng as you readwe di d. It is imperative that you pretend you believe this is a non- book. I know it is hard to believe that since it has paper, type, a cover, etc As you find your brain trying to make this non-book into a book, you will discover many interesting and funny thingsso please enjoy the workings of your mind, and be sure to take full advantage of your creative responses. Every phrase i n this non-book, the C Ds and the DVDs has been designed for one purpose: to assist you in becomi ng the person you already know at some level you are. "Become who you are, there are no guarantees" is the motto. 77 12 Energized Hypnosis We strongly suggest that you get yourself a notebook or journal to keep track of your thoughts and your progress. It is very helpful to write down any thoughts, feelings and beliefs that may come up as you read. You may notice that this non-book refers to compani on audi o C Ds and vi deo DVDs whi c h are available from N e w Fal con at ht t p: / / www. newf al con. com. These self-hypnosis tools wi l l assist you i n maki ng changes along wi t h this non-book and the wor k you put i n. The benefits of the combi nati on is exponentially greater than the i ndi vi dual components, so I suggest usi ng them i n the way described wi t hi n. For best results first read this non-book up to the point you are prompted to use the companion audios and videos, and write down what you are asked to write down. And follow the instructions regardless of how silly they seem to you. This combi ned program is designed to wor k at mul t i - ple analytic and synthetic l evel s. . . much of the wor k takes place outofawareness. Its purpose is to provi de the perspective and met hod- ology to change any behaviors and beliefs whi c h are now unacceptable to You. F r om time to time as you read and re-read this non- book you mi ght notice your mi nd dri ft i ng, eyes bl i nki ng, a feeling of relaxation, a t wi t ch or t wo, or even a sense of annoyance. Whatever you sense or feel, si mpl y al l ow it to happen. I know that at some poi nt it wi l l become obvi ous to you that the patterns that devel op f r om our interaction wi l l satisfy more than your curi osi ty. What makes this al l wor k so wel l for you is the knowl edge that there is somethi ng beyond what can be known verbal l y, that has and wi l l continue to gui de you to the solutions that are bei ng revealed to you by that part of you and your i n- depth awareness. The Non-Section Chapter 1 Going Deeper...NOW I remember a fri end telling me about a hypnosi s train- i ng he had attended. The trainer was t al ki ng about his wor k wi t h Mi l t o n Eri ckson, who i s considered by many t o be the grandfather of hypnosi s. He had the abi l i ty to look into your eyes and communicate wi t h a very deep part of you, almost as if he was speaking directly wi t h your soul . "There is a part of you that has been t aki ng care of you, for many years. It is the part of you that keeps your heart beat- i ng, that digests your food, that bl i nks your eyes, and it knows muc h more about you than I ever wi l l . A n d your unconscious knows exactly, now, that I am speaking directly to it, and it can respond in the most appropriate way for you." A n d wi t h that comment, he closed his eyes and felt the most incredible sense of bei ng understood and acknowledged at a very deep l evel , and as that feeling wel l ed up and a tear formed in his eye, he real i zed that this experience wo ul d make changes that ripple out into the future. "Because I want that part of you to know, that I know, just how hard it has wor ked for you, and I want to thank that part of you directly, because I know that for you to change, your unconscious is going to help you out quite a hit." A n d after that, my fri end said that an hour had passed by the time he had opened his eyes again, and although he 75 16 Energized Hypnosis di dn' t remember much of what was sai d, he had the di s- tinct feeling that al l owed hi m to know, for the first time in a l ong time, that things will be changing for the better. He said to me, "The feeling is l i ke hope, yet it goes beyond that. It is"a ki nd of deep, inner knowi ng, and even i f you don' t understand it ful l y at the time, that other--than-conscious part of you knows how and when it is being communicated with and can powerfully assist you. Now I don' t know about you, but that sounds pretty good to me, doesn't i t?" I coul d tell that my fri end had i ndeed learned a lot and made some real progress at that t rai ni ng, and was gl ad to have recommended it. There is a phrase that is heard in some hypnosi s circles that says "either al l communi cat i on is hypnosi s, or none of it i s. " If you see what we mean, smile and nod your head yes If you don't feel a deep sense of what was said, take three very deep breaths and sigh. A l l of our communi cat i on influences both others and ourselves. For example, at some point in your life you have felt the sun on your ski n. Recently I was l yi ng on a beach in the tropics, under- neath a pal m wi t h my toes in the sand. . . The water was a bri l l i ant blue color, sharpl y contrast- i ng the whi t e hul l s of the sailboats in the distance. . . As the wi nd gently rustles the leaves, and cools you, as you feel the heat from the sun on your s ki n. . . The smel l of the ocean is so distinct you can taste the salt on your l i ps . . . Stop for a moment and realize that as you were read- i ng, you were representing what I was sayi ng i nternal l y. If you sense this, squeeze your left thumb with your right hand; if not take 2 deep breaths and sigh. Energized Hypnosis 17 You mi ght have pi ct ured the scene i n your mi nd or felt the war mt h on your ski n. Yo u mi ght have started t al ki ng to yourself, inside your mi nd. I f you re-read the previ ous paragraph, you wi l l notice that al l of your five senses were brought into pl ay. Whi c h ones di d you notice the most? Whi c h one the least? H o w much more relaxed are you now? If 100 people read this paragraph, each woul d create a different arrangement of the cues that wo ul d hel p them to create, remember and re-experience these sensations. This is the effect of communi cat i on and hypnosi s. Some of you mi ght acknowl edge this fact by noddi ng your head. Others mi ght say to yourself "that makes sense," whi l e still others need do nothi ng. As you start to digest these familiar ideas, some of them may be appealing and be things that you want to remember. Write them down in your notebook or journal. Each of us has style, and at one time or another each of us has changed our style to suit the needs and desires of the present. We are not t al ki ng about fashion, but about self-style. You have your o wn style of communi cat i ng wi t h your- self and others and for interacting wi t h your envi ronment. You have created and chosen this style. Ma ny of us have done this wi t h intention whi l e others have chosen just to let it happen. Yo u even have your o wn style of problems, difficulties and l i mi tati ons that you have cho- sen. But N O , you f i r ml y reply, J di d not choose to have these. I di d not ask to i ncl ude those things i n my personal(ity) style. Maybe you di d not choose them deliberately, or remember them now consciously, and si mpl y realize that this time, R I GHT N O W I S YOUR T I ME it is your turn to begi n to define your self on your own terms. 18 Energized Hypnosis If you agree, show it in your eyes, let them light up; if not, pull your shoulders to your ears and hold that position for a minute or so, drop them and say No, thank you. I f you wo ul d l i ke to i mprove your style, to enhance your effect, and to fi nd a spot in yourself somewhere where you coul d l ook out wi t h curiosity and certainty; or, on the other hand, if you wo ul d si mpl y l i ke to learn, then you have made the correct choice in buyi ng this non-book. I t wi l l shed some l i ght on how you wor k so you can make adjustments to your style. Yo u can take a deeeeep breath and decide to design and redesign your self, and begin to choose how you respond and interact wi t h yourself, others and your envi ronment, instead of si mpl y re-acting (acting again). I f you have f ound yourself re-acting out the same stories and patterns of the past, and wo ul d like to do and feel something better, then become aware of what you are l ooki ng at right now. What you are hol di ng i n your hand is your gateway into your deeper selfit is a l i vi ng trance. Get up, jump up and down three times and shout, "Yes I will " If you don't want to, gently shake your head no, or if that doesn't please you, do nothing. This non-book wi l l also hel p you revi ew secret and sometimes pai nful feelings and beliefs cal ml y, peacefully and pri vatel y i n your mi nd, and then come to new decisions about them. To begi n this journey wo ul d you now please change your body posi ti on i n some way or, i f you prefer, move to a special place where you had your last pleasant experi - ence. Make yourself comfortable, the way you do when yo u watch a favorite movi e or the bi g game, because the game you f i nd yourself pl ayi ng at this very momentthe game of l i fei s wor t h wi nni ng. . .if you so choose. Chapter 2 A Little Bit About How Things Work Dur i ng our Psycho-Physi cal j ourney you wi l l be asked to explore new ideas, new perspectives and perform cer- tain tasks; but before we reach that point it is i mportant for you to understand what Psycho-Physics real l y is. Psycho-Physics is, first, the relationship between mi nd and body. Every mental action has a physi cal consequence and every physi cal action has a mental consequence. Research has not yet f ound where the mi nd stops and the body begins, al though you may have thought of them as separate. Second, Psycho-Physi cs is the relationship between person and envi ronment, where every envi ronment affects the person and every personal act affects the environment. Through an understandi ng of these interrelationships, you wi l l begin to bui l d the foundati on upon whi c h change (and your life) wi l l be bui l t . The mi nd- br ai n develops over a peri od of time and contains many associations that have formed through learning. Many of these complex associations occur pri mari l y in chi l dhood before the age of 7-8. Before this age, the mi nd- brai n has not yet devel oped the critical-analytical capabi l i - 79 20 Energized Hypnosis ties of differentiation and eval uati on, thus maki ng cortical i nterventi on into autonomic reactivity di ffi cul t if not i mpossi bl e. Thi s means that the chi l d is not rati onal l y deci di ng whether or not the association or generalization is useful or makes l ogi cal sense. One of our significant l earni ng achievements is the acqui si ti on of language and the related assignment of meani ng. A common metaphor for this is that we bui l d an i nt ernal map for meani ng and relationship of al l that we experience. It is of pri me importance to note that much of this l earni ng takes place before logical and rational thinking ability develops. The map is not the territory. A highway map of Arizona has lots of information about that area. Its purpose is to help you get from one place to another, to help you get where you want to go. It is designed to sort and present the necessary information in line withthe purpose it was createdfor. After studying and using that map long enough, one becomes confident about that information, one believes it to be real and true. But it will not prepare you for encountering a rattlesnake, which is also quite real. You can imagine then, that it makes sense to update your map now to include new and useful information. Your internal map of yourself is not yourself, and it probably could use a little updating. To repeat: Your internal map of yourself is not yourself, and it probably could use a little updating. If you agree, close your eyes and let your mind drift wherever it wants to go. Let it go now and begin to sense your body. When it is time, return to the non-book. If you don't agree, take four big breaths and sigh with relief. Energized Hypnosis 21 One of the important logical abilities that is l acki ng in the chi l d is the concept of reversibility. This is the underst andi ng that, by reversing an opera- tion, the effects are returned to their ori gi nal condi t i on (in most cases). An example: a chi l d sees that a lettuce leaf has been pl aced on his sandwi ch and believes thev sandwi ch is now r ui ned. Even when the offendi ng lettuce has been removed* the sandwi ch is st i l l mysteri ousl y tainted, and he wi l l not eat it. The chi l d is not t ryi ng to be di f f i cul t i n fact, the br ai n has not devel oped enough yet to under- stand! This means that wi t hout critical and analytical ability, many meanings are assigned and beliefs are formed that 1) we di d not consciously choose, 2) were extremely l i m- ited due to lack of i nformat i on and underst andi ng and, 3) are often sti l l operational in adul t hood. The meanings and beliefs are in your map. Your map is not reality, it is onl y a representation of reality. It is a tool. Yo u created your map in such a way that it may not be the best map to get you where you want to go right now. If you update your map, you wi l l be better equipped for your journey. Keep in mi nd that most feelings are also part of your map, and i f yo u l i ft up the covers you wi l l often f i nd beliefs hi dden underneath. Stretch and take 5 deep breaths, close your eyes and tell yourself out loud what you see. The drawing of a fire truck made by a five-year-old will not help a trainee fireman learn how to operate a real truck. It is not the five-year-old's fault, it does not make him bad. It just does not contain the same amount of, or type of, information that a technical training manual does. Realize that in many ways the way in which you view your- self and your capabilities and possibilities is exactly the same as the five-year-old's drawing. Keep the passion... Update the information. 22 Energized Hypnosis You mi ght begi n to t hi nk of more important and far- reaching consequences of this stage of learning, especially around negative and l i mi t i ng beliefs and feelings of inade- quacy and gui l t . Yo u mi ght now start feeling a sense of relief, because you di d the best you coul d at the time, and right now you can decide for yourself when is now the time to re-decide. C hi l dr e n often deify their parents as they are gr owi ng up, and tend to l ook at adults as "the bi g people who know how to do thi ngs. " They do not have the logical abi l - i ty or perspective to understand that their parents are often inaccurate or si mpl y ineffective humans. Because of this, beliefs and concepts such as "If they are right, I must be wr o ng . . . " or "They are good so I must be bad" devel op. Young chi l dren do not understand what it "means" to lose a job, to fight wi t h a spouse, or to get drunk. They are easily frightened, confused and overwhel med by their emotions. If an empoweri ng explanation isn' t offered, a chi l d wi l l assign meani ng on their own. . . and most often i t wi l l be about them. A n d worse, i t wi l l often be i n er r or yet most people have strict fidelity to their chi l dhood con- clusions. Most people wi l l fight like hell to hol d on to beliefs, conclusions, assumptions and feelings whi ch l i mi t them and cause them deep pai n. If you are ready to let go...take three breaths and shout yes; if you wish to hold on, you may, take three breaths and grasp your left arm. To further add to this, parents sel dom encourage their chi l dren to question them and to l ook for more accurate and useful i nformat i on. I n fact, the chi l d' s wi l l i ngness to believe their parents is exactly how most parents control them. They may not i ntend for their chi l dren to adopt pai nful and l i mi t i ng beliefs about themselves, but it happens nonetheless. Energized Hypnosis 23 Just because a bad or unpleasant set of events has occurred and a behavior ori gi nated to cope wi t h these events before the mi n d was ful l y devel oped does not mean that anyone must remai n vi ct i mi zed by either the pai nful experience or the adaptive behavior. Thi s hol ds for both acute and chronic conditions. For example, a young chi l d I know was constantly and publ i cl y compared to -a relative who everyone cl ai med was more intelligent than he was. When he was placed into a learning si tuati on the anxiety he experienced prevented hi m from recal l i ng and verbal i zi ng i nformat i on. Therefore, since it is assumed that intelligence is reflected by the abi l - ity to memori ze, recall and verbalize i nformat i on, he and everyone else bel i eved he was st upi d. What is the useful purpose of the belief of being stupid, you ask. It could be that it was necessary to agree with being stupid to be accepted by those who were threatened by anything greater than themselves. In a young mind, and in most pack animals, acceptance often equals survival. (This is a good example of a belief or behavior serving a useful purpose in some past context.) As he frequently failed he began to ignore school and dropped out at age 16. If you were to revi ew his grades you wo ul d f i nd that he was a D+ to C- student and that even his I Q scores were l ow normal . At the age of 17 he j oined the Na vy, and on the first exam scored the highest out of 80 men, some of who m were college graduates. When they called out his name the Chi ef Petty Officer stated that he coul dn' t believe it was hi m and that he must have cheated. Thereafter, he never scored over a C again. When he left the Na vy he took the H i g h School and College GE D. Not onl y di d he pass the H i g h School GE D, but also received 18 college units whi c h i ncl uded subjects such as chemistry, physics, Engl i sh, math, social science and psychol ogy. Besides havi ng received l ow scores i n these subjects whi l e in school, he never even fi ni shed the last t wo years of hi gh school. He was never aware that he 24 Energized Hypnosis underst ood these subjects, and even t hough he was com- pletely unable to verbalize the i nformat i on, he performed wel l enough to pass the tests. Of course when his fami l y found out that he had passed they expl ai ned it as l uck or cheating. It is worth noting nowthat this young man went on to earn two M.A. and two Ph.D. Degrees, as well as being published many times. What will you accomplish with your new resources and through the changes you are making now? Thi s account demonstrates that l earni ng di d take place at some l evel and was, in fact, encoded. The fact that he coul dn' t recall the i nformat i on was due to the type and chronic nature of anxiety that he felt when he was put on the spot. The effect of this anxiety (whi ch is another form of information and self-communication) interfered wi t h his abi l - ity to recall and verbalize the i nformat i on. When he was placed in a different l earni ng situationthat of taki ng an exam wi t h strangers who wo ul d not know how he d i d the tension lessened enough to al l ow hi m to access the i nformat i on and wri te it down. Yet, for the life of hi m, he coul dn' t recall the same i nformat i on verbal l y and publ i cl y five minutes after the exam. For example, when a fri end asked hi m about the questions on the exam i mmedi atel y after compl eti ng it, he coul dn' t even remember one. He had a form of amnesia. C o ul d it have been that the amnesia functioned solely to mai ntai n the belief of stupi di ty? This story is a good example of how someone else suggested that test anxiety "meant" stupidity...and how easy it can be to adopt erroneous beliefs, simply because other people said so. What false beliefs do you have about you, that when you drop them, will create relief and freedom? Tonight, when you drop off to sleep and are dreaming, you may remember 1 or 2 beliefs you may wish to be rid of. Chapter 3 More About How Things Work: Your Brain Al t hough we like to fancy ourselves as rational beings, we are inherently i rrati onal . The truth is si mpl e: we are i rrati onal beings capable of rational thought. Have you ever wonder ed why so many people know so much about "what to do" and why so few actually do it? This relates to bei ng overwei ght or in debt, probl em relationships, parenti ng, career success, etc. There has never been more i nformat i on available, yet the lack of appl i cat i on seems to be cul t ural l y uni versal . There are some things wor t h underst andi ng about your own brai n that wi l l shed some light on this. What and how we learn is fundamental l y dependent on the neuro-bi ochemi cal state of the learner at the time of the l earni ng experience. Thi s is known as "state dependent l earni ng, " whi c h is the tendency for one to realize the effects of l earni ng more in the special conditions associated to the l earni ng experience than in other condi ti ons and contexts. 25 26 Energized Hypnosis Have you ever noticed that you remember more of unique and emotionally charged experiences than you do of the average and uneventful ones? One of the most obvi ous and clear examples of state dependent l earni ng is traumatic amnesia. The person in his normal state cannot recall the events of the trauma, yet under hypnosis or dur i ng sleep the events and emotions are clearly experienced. People have different resources and memories due to the emoti onal state they f i nd themselves i n. Less obvi ous but common examples of this i nt ri gui ng psycho-physi cal rel ati onshi p are the day to day "losses" of memory. Maybe you have had the experience of forgetting somethi ng si mpl e like the name of the movi e you watched the night before. Most l i kel y you have had the experience of wal ki ng into a room and forgetting what it was you needed, onl y to return to the room you just came from and remember it. Researchers have been studying "mood modules." The concept of mood modules suggests that, for different emotional states, we have different memories and access to different internal resources. As you learn, your brai n devel ops bi ochemi cal neural bonds (BCNBs). These bonds are the neural connections in your brai n that enable the signal to travel f r om neuron to neuron, creating the l i nk from st i mul us to response. Some behavi oral scientists have cal l ed some of these responses "condi t i oned emoti onal reactions." The bonds are physi cal i n nature, and coul d be vi ewed metaphori cal l y as " wi r i ng connections." A si mpl i fi ed example woul d be l earni ng to wal k. Your nervous system takes i n i nformat i on about height, speed, and balance t hrough your senses, and then translates and transmits that i nformat i on to your muscles. As you practice, those connections that enable the most efficient and stable movements are reinforced, and the behavior i s "grooved i n . " T hr owi ng a bal l wi t h your non- Energized Hypnosis 27 domi nant hand wi l l show you the difference between a condi ti oned behavior and a new one. Bonds are also created wi t hi n and between the emo- tional and t hi nki ng centers of the brai n. Ma ny of these bonds are formed before the critical-evaluative mi nd was ful l y devel oped and coul d rati onal l y intervene. Mos t fear and anxiety are learned habits created at this time. To repeat: Most fear and anxiety are learned habits created at this time. Anot her form of l earni ng is i mpr i nt i ng. I mprint theory states that at critical times dur i ng early development, or peri ods of i mpr i nt vul nerabi l i t y, strong bonds are created as a result of one-time-learning. Researchers such as Konr ad Lorenz have st udi ed this in animals, and have documented cases where a baby gosl i ng was exposed to a pi ng-pong bal l shortly after bi rt h and i mpr i nt ed it as " mommy. " I t then f ol l owed the bal l around, nestled wi t h it, and later in life attempted to mate wi t h whi te r ound objects. Al t hough this research has not been studi ed exten- sively wi t h humans, the possible similarities are wor t h t hi nki ng about. You can imagine a young girl, who was very excited about peeling an orange by herself for the first time. As she was proudly demonstrating her new skill and abil- ity, her mother was looking past her out the window and, upon seeing the neighbor's kid digging up her flower gar- den, screamed "NOooo"; then, in her excited state, acciden- tally knocked the coffee pot over, spilling hot coffee on the young child's head, which caused her to fall down the stairs and make a trip to the hospital for stitches. Now, as a 27-year- old woman, she dislikes oranges and the color orange, and feels extremely uneasy when doing new things for the first time, to the point of avoiding new activities. 28 Energized Hypnosis The i mportant t hi ng to remember is that every behav- i or, belief or habit has at one time protected you, even though it may now be a hindrance to your development. Since these bonds and beliefs are nowunacceptable to you, they may be replaced if you choose wi t h new, creative and more flexible sur vi val (or even tri vi al ) strategies. In addi t i on to the l aggi ng devel opment of the rational and l ogi cal faculties, the protracted state of dependency and defenselessness of the human infant make it hi ghl y susceptible to i mpr i nt i ng and early l earni ng. Besides i mportant learnings happeni ng " r andoml y, " the errors and i rrati onal i ty of the previ ous generation are easily passed f or war d and the child comes to its own conclusions by itself which are often flawed and difficult to retrieve and restructure. To repeat: The child comes to its own conclusions by itself which are often flawed and difficult to retrieve and restructure. The above insight alone is worth the price of this non-book. Consider that most psychologists and counselors have no sense of this idea: that the child's own erroneous or incom- plete conclusions can be the cause of present day distur- bances. Can you think of a conclusion you came to as a child which was either wrong or incomplete? How is it affecting you today? The belief that the educational system can modi f y these early errors and innate tendencies is more a dream than a reality. (If knowl edge alone were adequate, no one wo ul d have any "probl ems. "). The so-called "soci al i zat i on" pro- cesswhi ch is innate for humanssi mpl y disguises what is really goi ng on and thereby makes it more di ffi cul t to redesign and recover yourself. We are raised to be " s i mi l ar " to our parents to f i l l the roles that are "appropri at e" and to do things the way they have al ways been done. Thi s isn' t necessarily done out of Energized Hypnosis 29 malice, but rather wi t hout ever questi oni ng its usefulness. (Most people never really question what they are d o i n g they si mpl y f ol l ow al ong and scorn those who do not, si mpl y out of habit.) T hi nki ng on one's o wn is not usual l y encouraged, and young mi nds cannot di st i ngui sh useful i nformati on f r om dogma. This woul dn' t be so bad if it weren' t increasingly di ffi cul t to erase or modi f y the dogma as the organi sm matures. Gui l t , shame, abandonment and the wi t hhol di ng of love and support wor k we l l at pr oduci ng the necessary st i mul i to keep a chi l d " i n l i ne. " It may appear to a young mi nd then that certain behav- iors "cause" these uncomfortable emotions. In actuality it is the adults' o wn beliefs and responses that are responsi- ble. Thi s is not evi dent to the chi l d who does not have the necessary perspective, rational and logical abi l i ty to "see through this" yet. You have probably heard a parent say to a child, "You think you're smart, don't you?"as if it is a bad thing to be smart. Then, later on, when the child gets to school and doesn't do well, everyone shrugs their shoulders. The child simply learned that being smart felt bad. Now the expectations of being smart are in conflict with the need to fit in. This example may seem over-simplified and naive, but you would be surprised at how many times these types of things come up in hypnosis. Now apply this to sex, religion, race, money, physical ability, interpersonal relationships and career choices and you will begin to see the far-reaching implications of what you have been reading about. You mi ght ask why it is so di ffi cul t to remove these bonds when they are no longer useful . One reason is that each bond is physical in nature. Each bond has a bi ochemi - cal and neural basis that has been strengthened by the fact that at one time or another it has served a useful purpose and has been repeated over and over again. I f the envi - ronment once conti nued to demand these patterns and habits for the purpose of sur vi val , they have now been 30 Energized Hypnosis condi ti oned into "necessary" and "essential" behaviors and beliefs. Anot her reason is that those parts of your brai n that govern sur vi val and the l ower instincts have already matured. Your brai n is no longer devel opi ng at the rate it once was. This is no different than why your bones stop gr owi ng at a certain age. It sometimes takes more effort to make changes than it di d to i ni t i al l y learn. The t hi r d reason, whi c h we wi l l go into i n depth, i s that there seems to be some basic desi gn problems in the human brai n structure. These human design elements are wor t h l ooki ng into because underst andi ng them wi l l al l ow you to see yourself in a new light, so you can take yourself off the hook, and get down to business and begi n to make the changes that you wi s h to make. The first design consideration is that the frontal lobes, whi c h govern executive funct i oni ng and rational and l ogi - cal t hi nki ng, are easily i nfl uenced by the l ower brai n. On the other hand, the frontal lobes have much less influence on the l ower brai n. I n other wor ds, more i nformat i on is sent f r om the l ower brai n up than from the higher br ai n down. The consequences of this is that even though yo u " know better," -the l ower brai n has more influence over your choices and behavior. A basic example of this can be seen in opti cal i l l usi on. Imagine that you have your face pressed against the clear wi ndow of a racquetball court. E ven though your front brai n " knows " that the bal l cannot hurt your eyes, whe n you see the bal l comi ng t owar d you, you fl i nch strongly nonetheless. Your l ower brai n, or what is sometimes cal l ed the older brai n, contains the neurol ogi cal circuits respon- sible for the safety of the organi sm, and these override the rational process. STOP STOP STOP A MODEL OF THE BRAINS. USE IT DAILY. Energized Hypnosis 31 Before you read what follows, blink at least a half dozen times and draw your attention to your nose As the tip of your nose becomes clear, notice how your eyes tire If you can do this for 5 minutes you may find yourself in a mild trance, opening your mind wider and wider to what will follow. The parts of the brai n associated wi t h emoti onal activ- ity are closest to the memories of human relationships; next closest are those associated wi t h animals; and then come the memories associated wi t h tools. What are the implications? Background A current, and agi ng, paradi gm describes the human brai n as a tripartite entity: 1. The reptile brai n = oldest a. Brai n stem b. The most functi onal part of the reptile brai n c. Concerned wi t h basic sur vi val d. B l ood pressure, endocrine, thirst, breathing, heart rate regulator. e. Not so muc h emoti onal as parametrically reactive to ensure sur vi val . f. If you step on a rattlesnake's t ai l and it bites you, it's probabl y not mad, it's just reacting. 2. The mammal i an brai n = evol ut i onari l y newer a. L i mbi c regi on b. Mor e devel oped i n mammal s than reptiles c. A dds the emoti onal tinge, hal o, and connec- t i on to every event. d. Emoti ons make events more intense whi c h can ai d sur vi val . Memor y storage becomes more efficient. e. If you step on a tiger's tale and it bites you, you can be sure it's emoti onal l y upset and angry. 3. The human brai n = very evol ut i onari l y newwe don' t even know how to use i t . . .yet. 32 Energized Hypnosis a. The cortex/neocortex b. Ver y newl y evol ved c. A l l o ws hi gher processes: pl anni ng, analysis, schemi ng, mat h, art, science, rel i gi on, medi - tation. d. I f you step on my tai l , I may smile at you, but I am secretly pl anni ng your murder to be carried out in 6 months. Analysis If we consider the emotions to be older than memories, and closer to the center of the brai n, we can postulate that as one moves laterally and out war d from the brai n stem one encounters more advanced, intelligent, aware, awake, and newl y-evol ved portions of the brai n. However aware- ness, enlightenment and so-called higher functions are not at al l necessary for s ur vi val or procreation. In fact, the basic sur vi val port i on of the brai n is the brai n stem. F r om there we tack on enhancements l i ke emotions and then cognition. Whi l e cognitive processes can enhance qual i t y of l i fe, they are superfl uous for sur vi val . So, the basic poi nt is that the nearer to the brai n stem / reptile brai n we get, the more essential for s ur vi val the brai n segment becomes. For example^ if we shut down the portions of your frontal cortex, " y o u " are gone; however, your body and a differ- ent personality wi l l l i ve on quite functi onal l y. Thus, the concl usi on is: the fact that the social memory is closer to the l i mbi c and brai n stem regions may indicate that sociality and social relationships have been more important for species-survival than higher cognitive func- tions l i ke the mani pul at i on and construction of tools. Therefore, the human bei ng as a species is pri ori t i zed as fol l ows: first, reflexive; second, emot i onal /soci al ; and t hi r d, logically intelligent. A n y intelligent thoughts you have wi l l travel from the cortex to be filtered by the emo- tions, then the brai n stemmeani ng you, the " y o u " that you really are in the i vor y tower of your cortex, is con- stantly modi fi ed and altered by the emotions and the wat chful eye of the br ai n stem. Yo u are bei ng moni tored Energized Hypnosis 33 by the ancient parts of our speciesyou are bei ng kept in line wi t h our ancient species' goals. <> YOU CAN WAKE UP NOW <> IF YOU WISH Key to self-change: Realize that new t hi nki ng, whi ch takes place in the frontal lobes, takes time to reprogram the l ower brai n. Martial arts are taught with this principle in mind. In defen- sive and combat situations thinking isn't useful, so they drill in responses until they become second nature and auto- matic. You want to do the same thing with the beliefs and behaviors about yourself that you really want. The second design anomal y of the human brai n is that the frontal lobe, or higher brai n, is bypassed under peri ods of stress. If you step off the curb and notice that a speeding bus i s beari ng down on you, you j ump out of the way wi t hout " t hi nki ng about i t. " The l ower brai n centers not onl y talk to and influence the higher brai n centers, but also talk wi t hi n and between themselves. Thi s means that, whi l e early condi t i oni ng can be modi f i ed, under intense stress the l ower centers activate previ ous l earni ng wi t hi n and between the l ower brai n centers. K ey to self-change: Realize that at times your ol d responses may surface. This doesn't mean that you aren't changingit's just how your brai n works t o protect you. Keep worki ng at your changes and on your goals until they become second nature. The t hi r d design anomal y is that the parts of the brai n where memories are stored are at var yi ng distances from the part of the brai n that governs emoti onal activity. But remember: the memories closest to the emoti onal centers 34 Energized Hypnosis are those associated wi t h human relationships, the next closest are memories related to animals, and the next are the memories associated wi t h tools. Research on the brains of stroke vi cti ms show the memory centers associated wi t h l ower social brai n activity are physically closer to the emo- tional brai n than memories associated wi t h tools. One consequence of this coul d be that our relationships wi t h others does have a greater i mpact on our emotions than our relationships wi t h tools. I f j o u consider rational thought, goal set t i ng and pl an- ni ng as tools, it begins to make sense why other people can "short -ci rcui t " your best i nt ent i ons. Thi s may expl ai n why we act so oddly and "i r r at i onal l y" ar ound certain people. Throughout hi story, bei ng excommuni cated from the "t ri be" often resulted in death. Therefore it makes sense, from a sur vi val standpoint, for your br ai n to be designed this way to enhance the odds of s ur vi val . Key to self-change: Remember that, al though others affect you, they don' t determine your wor t h, capabilities or possibilities...you can and will do. The next paragraph is one of the most important you may ever read. Set a date when you begin to apply it everyday. Don't forget to remember. Lift your head as high as you can and scratch your chin three times or more if it feels good. When you are done reading this paragraph, treat yourself to something you like Now, begin to read it SLOWLY Now read it faster and faster and faster and faster take three deep breaths and let goNOW! The last design consideration is that the mi nd has a di ffi cul t time differentiating between subjective i nternal reality and external objective reality. Your senses take in i nformat i on from the outside wo r l d and your brai n responds to it. Your brai n also responds to your i magi na- tion. T hi nk about how real and scary (or sexy) your dreams can be. What often happens is that your body responds to your subjective internal t hi nki ng processes Energized Hypnosis 35 and produces emotions whi ch are "proof" that this is tak- i ng place in your objective reality "out there." To repeat: The last design consideration is that the mind has a difficult time differentiating between subjective internal reality and external objective reality. Your senses take in information from the outside world and your brain responds to it. Your brain also responds to your imagina- tion. Think about how real and scary (or sexy) your dreams can be. What often happens is that your body responds to your subjective internal thinking processes and produces emotions which are "proof that this is tak- ing place in your objective reality "out there." Can out there be in here and can in here be out there? How do you know which is which and who is who? Stamp your foot three times if you agree; if not, don't move for 3 minutes. Many children "know" that monsters live under their bed and in their closet. They are sure that they are there; even though they can see that they are not there, they are still afraid. When you ask them what they are picturing and hearing inside their mind (which happens as fast as a thought and is outside their conscious awareness), they wi l l give you detailed descriptions and scenarios of the monsters and how scary they are. They have trouble differentiating between the reality inside their mind and the reality "out there," just like adults do. When you think about how real their emotions are. ..remember, most adults are hallucinating monsters... Key to self-change: Remember that some of your emo- tions come f r om your previ ous l earni ng patterns and not from objective reality. Realize that oftentimes the only thing 36 Energized Hypnosis that stands between you and what you want are those emotions. Emoti ons can be as real as bri ck wal l s . . . It can be useful to realize that most of our difficulties in life stem from the fact that our brain is designed the way it is, rather than f r om some under l yi ng deficiency i n our value and wort h. (These " under l yi ng deficiencies" l i ve in the closet and under the bed, by the way. ) The very nature of these design elements at one time was a great asset, and is now (most of the time) a weakness that needs to be overcome. The brai n seems to be designed to guarantee sur vi val first, but there is a difference be- tween s ur vi vi ng and t hr i vi ngwhi c h i s what this non- book is about. Since your brai n doesn't automatically change its structure (in the way we desire) as we learn and grow, you need to learn to do this yourself ...deliberately. If you agree that many of your emotions and feelings are learned and have underlying beliefs, the next time you feel overwhelmed by an emotion, forget to remember that you know what is going on. Act as if you have no control over what is going on in here and out there. As you begi n t o understand how your mental- emoti onal state affects you, you wi l l begi n to realize how important it is to access and maintain useful emotional states. You can remember a time when you were depressed, and while you were doing that, you tended to view all of your past experiences as rotten and miserable and your present and future opportunities the same. And then, when you were happy, everything in the past, present and future seemed just right. How useful will it be for you to remember this the next time you are feeling other than you would We to E ven as an adul t, now that the critical mi nd can inter- vene, it can be di ffi cul t to change these bonds. Yo u mi ght Energized Hypnosis 37 notice the vari ous ways that people attempt change (e.g., medicate themselves) and the preponderance of dr ug use in avoi di ng emotions. Yo u may also have heard of the use of drugs in shamanistic and eclectic circles to change these bonds. You mi ght wonder how can we change bi ochemi - cal-neural bonds wi t hout the use of drugs. (Psycho-pharmacological) medications are extremely popu- lar now. You may have seen the commercials with little happy-smiley balls who no longer have a care in the world. These drugs are often helpful for stabilizing, but the problem (as with other common self-medications) is that they don't change the underlying bonds reliably. Put your mind at ease. The fact that the cause of al l di f f i - culties are bi ochemi cal -neural bonds gives us hope since the brai n is al ways gr owi ng, re-evaluating and re-pro- grammi ng itself. Since the brai n is not fi xed, most anyt hi ng that has been created can be changed if you si mpl y know how. The latest brai n research doesn't support the false, but common, belief that just because events once seriously damaged or affected one's life that they shoul d and wi l l continue to affect it. The reason why external drugs are not essential for change to take place is because the brai n is a gigantic bi ochemi cal manufact uri ng plant. I t is your o wn pharmacy and you are the pharmacist. You can access the pharmacy t hrough new thoughts and new behaviors that create new learnings. Through repetition and over time they wi l l cause you to feel different; you may, i f you choose, realize that this means you are changi ng! It is a widely known and accepted fact that almost all medi- cation does not work directly on the body, but simply affects the nervous system, which in turn creates its own biochemi- calsthat go to work on the problem. 38 Energized Hypnosis Thi s di scussi on about how bi ochemi cal -neural bonds and your brai n structure cause much of your misery may make you depressed. If it does, STOP. Take a deep breath and relax. You can start to feel the relief that comes from underst andi ng yourself better, whi c h makes your path to self change much easier, because you no longer have to fight yourself. Nowyou can focus your energy and efforts on doi ng what wor ks. People are so often focused on the qui ck fix and the silver bullet that they get di scouraged easily. Society sells you the hope of somethi ng-for-nothi ng at every t urn. We al l l i ke and enjoy peak experiences, but it's really the focus and repetition that wi l l make it happen for you. Realize that it takes time, energy and commi tment to develop your- self and change your style. You are worth the investment. The purpose of this non-book is to provi de you wi t h the opport uni t y and the tools to reclaim your emoti onal and psychol ogi cal self. Al t hough it mi ght have seemed l i ke an impossible task in the past, it is good to note that if some changes take a little longer than others, realize it is just part of your psycho-physi cal makeup. Realize that you are dealing with your brain structure and the impact of your previous learning, not your value or your ability to change. If while reading you had any realizations about yourself, or if any old memories popped up, write them down in your notebook or journal. Chapter 4 Different Is OK Most present day fears are now useless. At one time these fears may have had ut i l i t y, but the onl y purpose they serve now is to give you a sense of familiarity. Al t hough the fears are pai nf ul , they gi ve you a sense of confidence because they are fami l i ar and have conti nui ty wi t h the past. The di ffi cul t y in changing many of them is that a pri mi t i ve sense of identity has been created around them. Yo u wi l l notice I said "sense of i dent i t y" and not "i dent i t y. " Real identity is innate, and exists wi thout cl i ngi ng to ol d beliefs and the behaviors that support them. Many financial traders have stated that they finally started making money and became successful when they were able to give up the need to be "right"and started measuring results based on what works, instead of believing what other people told them was good and bad or right and wrong. You are not your feelings. You are not your thoughts. You are not your job, your relationship, your current situation. Yo u are not your probl ems and l i mi tati ons. Ri ght now, i n the present moment, i n the hear and now, si tti ng there, reading this non-book, you are pure potential. 39 40 Energized Hypnosis Proof experiment: Look around, become aware that there is a you, sitting in a room, reading. The moment before I made you aware of this, you may have been lost in reading. There was no distinction between you and the process of reading, there was only reading. Now, pinch your leg. Notice that you can observe your feeling pain. You, the observer, are not the pain. How can you be, if you are observing it. Are you there? If you want to try this, let yourself become overwhelmed any time you like Then hold your breath and see how long your identity depends on your beliefs, feelings, ideas, rela- tionships or, for that matter, anything else. Of course, you don't have to wait, you can do it right now Build up a thought image that is very important to you, nowhold your breath and begintosee what happens. Remember, hold it as long as you can and then...hold it againnowlet go. Shake your head yes if you agree; sigh with relief if you don't. Once you know that you can replace your restrictive and pai nf ul sur vi val strategies wi t h useful , creative and expansive strategies, you wi l l stop cl i ngi ng to the fami l i ar ol d patterns and let go of them. In fact, often the onl y benefit of the l i mi t i ng ol d patterns is the comfort in fami l i ari t y. Fidelity to the fami l i ar is onl y a way to cope, and there is a bi g difference between copi ng and excel l i ng. Yo u mi ght picture yourself havi ng been t hr own into the deep end. The fami l i ar, l i mi t i ng way of deal i ng wi t h this is to thrash about, barely keepi ng your head above water. Anot her way is to trust and l earn to s wi m, thereby gai ni ng freedom and the abi l i ty to enjoy the pool of life and s wi m wherever you want to go. As you replace and remove what you have deci ded i s no longer useful , you wi l l begi n t o elicit personal power i n Energized Hypnosis 41 yourself that wi l l extend to others. As your personal power expands and grows, your capabilities and options wi l l mul t i pl y on their own accord, and your moment um wi l l enable you to accompl i sh your goals and reach your dreams. This is the process behi nd the sayi ng "The ri ch get richer and the poor get poorer. " You can, can't you? The word can implies ability or permis- sion. Right now you are learning how to have the ability. Give yourself permission, RIGHT NOW. You are all grown up, so you don't need anyone else to tell you what you can and can't do with your own mind anymore. Being a childstillis a habitwhich you CAN giveup NOWlittle by littleor in one or two steps. Will You Reject Your Newfound Freedom? Consi der this analogy. A person has a bad ki dney. If he doesn't get it replaced he wi l l die or l i ve a severely restricted life. Hi s first step is to decide to go i n for surgery and then a new ki dney is i mpl ant ed. The body starts to reject the healthy ki dney. Why? Because it is differ- ent and forei gn to the body. E ven t hough the ki dney is needed for the body' s survi val , it begins to destroy the new ki dney. To intervene and stop the body f r om destroy- i ng the new ki dney, the physi ci an gives the patient drugs that prevent the body f r om rejecting it. One way the drugs wor k is to "fool" the body into bel i evi ng that the ki dney is not alien. Anot her way is to reduce the rejection response itself. The doctor also prescribes a regiment of heal i ng activities. It is up to the patient to engage in the new activities i n order to get better. In time the body heals and accepts the new ki dney as it own. The person then goes on to live a healthier life. Ma ny people are trained to feel bad when they are faced wi t h doi ng something different. (This, as you have guessed by now, is what fidelity to the past means.) The 42 Energized Hypnosis patient may have felt bad that the ori gi nal ki dney di dn' t wor k out, but he soon was able to realize that feeling bad didn't help. It is of extreme importance, to become aware of this and change your beliefs about "different" so that you can feel good about changing. Just suppose for a mi nute that al l of the things you want in your life are different than what you are currently t hi nki ng, feeling and doi ng. N o w you see, hear and feel the importance of why it is necessary for you to be comfort- able and powerful in the face of new and different people, situa- tions and learnings. M u c h of the rapport between humans is based on s i mi - l ari ty. We are trained to believe that samenessbeing si m- i l a r i s good and that bei ng different i s bad. We are trained to accept the beliefs and standards of our parents and peer groups. Most mammal s are trained to be hi ghl y sensitive to difference. Robert Ant on Wi l s on quotes Robert Ar dr e y in his book Prometheus Rising.. . (New Falcon): "I magine that you are a monkey and you' re r unni ng along a pat h. . . and unexpectedly meet face to face another ani mal . N o w, before you know whether to attack it, to flee it, or to ignore it, you must make a series of decisions. Is it monkey or non-monkey? I f non-monkey, is it pro-monkey or anti-monkey? If monkey, is it male or female? If female, is she interested? If male, is it adul t or juvenile? If adult, is it of my group or some ot her?. . . You have about one fi fth of a second to make al l these decisions, or you coul d be attacked. " I ' m sure you can t hi nk of examples of this i n your o wn life. H o w many instances do you know of where someone decides to be different and gets a better education than their parents; or changes religions; or marries outside of their ethnic group causing an emoti onal rift like a t i dal wave in their fami l y? W H O A R E Y O U R E J E C T I NG B Y B E C O M - I N G M O R E S U C C E S S F U L ? The list may be longer than you thi nk. Energized Hypnosis 43 An infamous financial trader once said that the reason most people fail as traders is the human tendency to do what feels comfortable and familiar instead of doing what works. It seems that people have the tendency to sort by f ami l - iarity and consistency. To their o wn detriment they often choose to sur r ound themselves wi t h people, places and activities that they are fami l i ar wi t h and whi c h remai n relatively stable and constanteven though they do not provi de them wi t h the results they want. One of the major keys to success is to make the commitment to do what works in terms of reaching your goals, instead of doi ng what feels pleasant in the short term. A young man who, like many others, grew up in a less-than- optimal environment: His father was highly narcissistic and an angry drunk, and his mother retreated into inner fantasy. For many years he thought that the way his parents acted and the way he felt about it, although unpleasant, was normal. Many years later he found out that it wasn't normal after all. As he was learning to do many new things and trying out new perspectives to overcome his upbringing, he realized that new things, and most often the very things that work...the solutions, don't feel normal. They feel different. And he was trained to believe, like so many others, that being different was bad, wrong and not-ok. All it took was one of those looks from a parpnt nr respected person, or one of 'those comments, and he just felt it. uver time the meaning of "bad" became attached to the' feeling of different. Even I though he "knew" this, it was necessary to learn how to over- come the feelings fromthese old bio-neurological structures. Humajjsare faithful to old structures. Whereis vour fidelity? I n a si mi l ar way, new and healthier behaviors and habits at first feel al i en. This is because they do not match the bi ochemi cal reality models and neuro-cortical path- ways that currently exist in the brai n. Remember, these structures are real and have substance, and l i ke any other 44 Energized Hypnosis substance can be changed and altered once you realize what tools to use. Tense your body for a moment. You might begin to look at things that feel alien in a new light. Many people have a fascination with aliens and UFOs because the idea that there is something else out theremore advanced, different opens up new possibilities. Why? Not because aliens are green or gray, but because they travel fast and go to new places, and have greater abilities than the average human. Why is your greatest potential alien? Who and what are you being faithful to NOW? At first the brai n attempts to reject the new behavi or or habit. Thi s has been called "resistance" by psychoanalysts. However , the wor d resistance has very negative connota- tions for many i ndi vi dual s. What the brai n is doi ng is not hi ng more than what it was desi gned to do. I t hol ds on to habits, patterns and behaviors whi c h once wor kedeven t hough these patterns are no longer useful . The brai n is so creative that it wi l l attempt to prove that the dangers and situations that were present at the time of the creation of these patterns and behaviors st i l l exist. I n other words, the brai n gets off on hal l uci nati ng. Yo u already know that it can be di ffi cul t to differenti- ate when you are respondi ng to subjective i magi nat i on or external reality. H o w do you experience this i n your self? T hr ough feelings. Feelings are communi cati ons to you f r om other parts of you. Feelings feel like they are truethat is their nature. In fact, most people believe that their feelings " make" their beliefs true. Is that true? Energized Hypnosis 45 A young boy is goofing around in the science room after school. Somehow, he gets the cord from the human skeleton display model (equipped with wheels for easy handling) hooked to his belt. He runs terrified down the street, scream- ing, as the skeleton chases him relentlessly toward certain doom. He crashes into a bush, his lifeless skeleton nemesis beside him...and then realizes that it was never a threat to himatall... Is there any way, as he was r unni ng down the street, that the boy wo ul d believe you i f you t ol d hi m he had not hi ng to wor r y about? What wo ul d it take for hi m to be able to stop, t urn to face that skeleton, and know that you and you alone have the power to make it all right. Think about the skeleton story. Emotion and feelings didn't make it real...and... These erroneous belief-feeling-identity loops have been called "sel f-ful fi l l i ng prophecies. " The brai n is designed to hel p you survi ve and it must first be convi nced that its current pattern is bei ng replaced wi t h somethi ng better before is wi l l let it go. Go look in the mirror. What you see is the result of your beliefs-feelings-identity loops conveying to the world what you appear to be...whether people are conscious of what they see or not we all respond in one way or another to the illusions we see If you would like to change your illusion for a moment or two jump up and down on a carpet for five minutes, twisting your face into different forms and pretending to laugh as hard as you can When your time is up, do it again for another five minutes if you wish, now go look into the mirror and see how interesting this new illusion is. Your new illusion will remain with you for about 20 minutes, maybe a little longer If you do this every day and go deeper as you jump higher, you will find newer and more interesting illusions. 46 Energized Hypnosis In many ways it is easier to learn new ski l l s that do not have strong emoti onal ties. Al t hough we learn every day throughout our life, learning becomes more di ffi cul t when the new s ki l l or behavi or is related to a deeper emoti onal structure. In these cases, especially when the autonomic nervous system ( ANS ) becomes i nvol ved, deep fears and anxieties emerge that can be di ffi cul t to ignore. Emot i on is like the mortar that hol ds the bri cks together. The level of emoti on is the measure of importance and is related to what is relevant for sur vi val . At one time these strong emotions hel ped us cope, yet now they may be l i mi t i ng and debi l i tati ng. Emotion simply marks out to the brain what to pay attention to. The 27-year-old woman knows that emotion and feelings are what "proves" that oranges are bad and that she cannot try new things, even though she now knows that there is no "logical" reason for this. She is nowbeginning to realize that those feelings come fromher lower brain, and not fromdata taken in by her senses. Realize that many so-called probl ems and l i mi tati ons are not hi ng more than i l l usi ons and hallucinations made " r eal " by the emotions that are triggered to protect you. Remember this if and when those ol d feelings pop up when you begi n to think and do things differentlyNOW Chapter 5 Why Most Therapy Doesn't Work The reason why most (but not all) therapy does not wor k is that therapists themselves have gotten into habits and belief systems whi c h were at one time useful for them. Even though the models and belief systems may have been useful in some contexts, they are often i ncorporated into the therapist's o wn identity and color the " N O W " to such a degree that the patient is lost in the therapist's o wn learn- i ng structures. I n other wor ds , most therapists and therapies do not vi ew the patient as a naturalistic l i vi ng process, but as a fixed t hi ng wi t h sympt oms that needs to be fi xed. The therapistby his very effort to become a thera- pisthas created a therapeutic hal l uci nat i on whi c h he has i denti fi ed wi t h. Science Alert: In the field of physics, it is widely known and accepted that nothing is fixed, and that everything is con- stantly moving and changing. At the atomic level, the atoms themselves are mostly empty space, and the components that make up the protons, neutrons and electrons (superstring theory) are suspected to possibly not even exist. It seems to be that nothing is set in stone, even the stones themselves. 47 48 Energized Hypnosis The term "pati ent" in and of itself describes a model and an attitude that attempts to dissociate the sympt om from a natural l i vi ng breathi ng entity. Thi s is called the medical model. This model is about bei ng broken and needing to be fi xed. This mi ght be a use- ful way to l ook at cars. Yo u already know that the map is not the territory, that you are not the label. People, on the other hand, learn l i mi tati ons and difficulties, and do so often because that was the best t hi ng to do, at some time and place in the past. It is i mportant to realize that what was learned can be unlearned. It is interesting to note that the wor d " f i xe d" means "l ocked i n pl ace" and " havi ng been made all better" and at the same t i me. . . i t just may be, that fixing is not what is needed at al l . At one time, you may have believed in Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy. And then you unbelieved it? It always feels so wonderful when I see that my clients all of a sudden realize that all of your old problems and difficulties are just the same... and can also be unbelieved. Most therapies attempt to fit the patient into a part i cu- lar pattern or box for the sake of the therapist's system. Whether the system is Freudi an, Jungian, Rei chi an, Rati onal -Emoti ve, Cogni t i ve or whatever else is available, the patient becomes the vi ct i m of a model . Most therapists forget what the patient has come in for. He is unhappy and he is in pai n. Thus, the job of the therapist is to assist the patient's creative self to heal himself and not to validate or support some theory or i deol ogy (map). The model , theory, map, hal l uci nati on or i deol ogy exists solely to assist the client. The client does not exist to prove the theory or model . Ma ny therapists and academics have completely forgotten this. Does the road exist for the cars or do the cars exist for the road? If someone tol d you that books exist so trees coul d be cut down, what wo ul d you say? Energized Hypnosis 49 If the therapist is unable to assist in this process it is unacceptable behavi or for them to continue treating a client. I know one therapist who has had the same patient for 16 years and the therapist's cl ai m is that the patient had a major breakt hrough: " H e fi nal l y understood his ani ma proj ection. " Thi s is st upi di t y on the therapist's parti f not outright cri mi nal . You should expect and demand insight and skill fromthose who are assisting you in your personal evolution. This is no different than a physi ci an who treats a patient wi t h chemicals when a less dangerous remedy can be f ound. The physi ci an has been taught to believe onl y in drugs and, as a result, hi s identity and val ue become easily threatened by a healer who hol ds to a drugless therapy. I am not pi cki ng on physi ci ans alone, for almost every type of healer I have met is a true believer in his o wn support system. Remember, each form of treatment ri gorousl y attempts to stuff the natural process into conceptual frameworks created by the educational process the profes- sional has undergone. It is good to know that even coun- selors and psychologists (you know who you are) can unbe- lieve yourself right out of a rigid and inflexible approach. It is as si mpl e as not pour i ng the water down the drai n wi t h the spaghetti it was cooked i n. Even though your conscious mind has recognized the illu- sion in the last sentence and you may have repeated the expected sequence of words to yourself., .your unconscious mind has corrected the "broken" expectationthat it is not the water but the spaghetti. If this is true, tap once with your happy finger, the one you like the best; if not, take three deep breaths. Can you explain to a stranger that believing is seeing! 50 Energized Hypnosis Therapeutic theory and models are best attempts at provid- ing an understanding for how things work and for providing a map for change. But remember that the map is not the territory. An architect can have plans of a house and show them to his client. He really has no idea how the client feels inside his current abode or how he will feel inside when he finally arrives at his new homeor does he? You decide. BUT WAITI have pro- vided you with only two optionshow many more are there? That healers may be r i gi d True Believers shoul d not discourage anyone from seeking treatment. However , what shoul d be kept in mi nd is that you are T H E authority i n deci di ng whi c h way t o go and how creative you wo ul d like to be in f i ndi ng solutions. Your internal support system has wor ked for you i n the past and wi l l be sure to wor k in the future. Over the past t wo decades some researchers have learned muc h about how the brai n and nervous system operate. They have come f or war d wi t h new methods to hel p i ndi vi dual s use their creative resources to remove and replace beliefs and behavi or whi c h are no longer of any real use. This non-book and the methods contained wi t hi n are si mpl y new tools to assist nature in her goal of perfecting her most interesting hal l uci nat i onyou. Chapter 6 Multiple Levels You have a part of you that keeps your heart beating, keeps you breathing, bl i nks your eyes and digests your f oodal l wi t hout your havi ng to thi nk about it. These parts of you operate at different levels of aware- ness, and most often not in your " nor ma l " level of (word- label) consciousness. These parts of you have commonl y been labeled your unconscious mi nd, your subconscious mi nd and your other-than-conscious mi nd. No matter what you call it, you can t hi nk of yourself as havi ng mul t i pl e levels. Whether any of these concepts are "t rue" or not, it can be useful to t hi nk of it this way for the sake of self-under- standing. Throughout the self-discovery process you wi l l become increasingly aware that you are a mul t i -l evel communi ca- tor who can be as clear as necessary. You wi l l also learn that you do not have to be clear at one l evel of communi ca- tion to be clear at another. You can be comfortable and trust all levels of yourself, the very same way you trust a certain part of yourself to keep your heart beating. "Hasn' t ski pped a beat" is a hi gh compl i ment for anyt hi ng techni- cal, mechanical and for yourself, so you can relax now and trust yourself, because these parts of you are l ooki ng out for you and taki ng care of things you normal l y aren't aware of. 57 52 Energized Hypnosis Realizing this will speed up your progress as you don't have to understand exactly what is happening and how it is hap- pening for you to utilize it fully and benefit fromit now, allow- ing you to move more quickly. If you had to learn medicine to benefit from undergoing surgery, you would have to wait many years until you finished medical school. You have probably already waited long enough, and you no longer need any extra weight anymore. Ma ny solutions are si mpl y one or t wo steps removed from conscious awareness. Your job is to continue your o wn development whi l e, at the same time, bei ng confident that any necessary re-structuring is also t aki ng place at those levels. Most of your thinking and re-evaluation of the past and future takes place out of awareness. Do you believe this or do you know this? Many people don't think that they are thinking without awareness. How about you? Do you know that 99% of what is going on is doing so without your con- scious consent? Some people are horrified at this prospect... How do you think about not thinking with your consent? Remember, what you see on the screen of your mind, like the screen of a computer, is not what is going on behind the scenes. Keep in mind that for many people consciousness means they are aware of "verbal" thoughtssometimes called sub- vocal thinkinggoing through their minds. This gives them the illusion that they are in charge and have control over what is going on. It is easy to learn wi t hout the conscious real i zati on that we are l earni ng. I n fact, you have been doi ng just that this whol e time, haven' t you? Have you ever wondered why i n many cases you do much better than you expect? Knowl edge and change are not al ways dependent on verbal understandi ng. Remem- ber the story about the young boy who was able to per- form we l l on a test wi t hout havi ng conscious verbal recall. Energized Hypnosis 53 We assume that a person is intelligent if he can verbal- ize what he can access f r om his memory. Bot h the abi l i ty to recall and the abi l i ty to verbalize are ski l l s wi t h a hi gh interpersonal val ue. Al s o hi ghl y val ued is the abi l i ty to organize what you recall and verbalize. Al t hough this ski l l is not an ultimate test of knowl edge or intelligence, i ndi vi dual s who can ver- balize and organize the i nformat i on they recall are consi d- ered smart. They frequently get ahead of those i ndi vi dual s whose actual Intelligence Quotients are significantly higher. Why is this? I n the Western wor l d our perception of intelligence is often based on the abi l i ty to verbalize and regurgitate informationregardless of whether it is understood or can be appl i ed. Consider a military historian and strategist. This intellectual most likely has stored an enormous amount of information: dates, facts and scenarios. He also will be able to produce this information through writing papers, articles and books, as well as through extensive lectures. Yet, this does not mean he has any ability in any form of combat in the field. In fact, most soldiers and operatives have little respect for these people, because their information is based only on verbal recall, instead of from actually doing it. Remember that real understanding and ability often require a muscular memory component and not simply an intellec- tual "understanding." Many successful people rehearse the motions required to accomplish a task in their mind's eye long before they attempt it. Ma ny i ndi vi dual s severely l i mi t themselves from i mpr ovi ng their lives because they onl y evaluate them- selves on their abi l i ty to recall, organize and verbalize i nformat i on and somehow forget their other abilities and successes. If this has ever been you, remember the soldiers who make things happen without ever worrying about their verbal ski l l s. 54 Energized Hypnosis Yo u may also be pleasantly surpri sed that as your self- underst andi ng increases al ong wi t h the other changes you are maki ng, your abi l i ty to communicate verbal l y also increases. Anot her very i mportant t hi ng that we know: most mi nd- body communi cat i on i s non-verbal . Thi s explains why si mpl e positive t hi nki ng i s not suffi - cient to cause radi cal or permanent change in the short term. Positive t hi nki ng is not t hi nki ng at al l , it is si mpl y thoughti ng. Positive thinking does have its place. You remember that a part of your mind responds powerfully to your internal subjective experience. Therefore it makes sense to use your abilityto thinkandto imagine, to picture whatyou want. This would be better called positive imaginingwhich would involve more than a thought or a wish but rather a complete picture. Most i ndi vi dual s have conflicted feelings about certain issues. Thi s is sometimes reflected in the contradiction be- tween verbal and non-verbal responses. The most obvi ous is sayi ng yes whi l e movi ng the head ever-so-slightly to indicate no. Thi s is called i ncongruency, and researchers have l ong known that these non-verbal reactions often indicate deeper attitudes and structures. These structures are usual l y out of conscious awareness and control, and often sabotage conscious i ntenti on. Thi s shoul d shine some light on why it is so easy to make promises to yourself and more di ffi cul t to keep them. When there is a conflict between levels, the l evel that wi ns out is usual l y the one that is closest to the emoti onal centers of the brai n. Energized Hypnosis 55 To repeat: When there is a conflict between levels, the level that wins out is usually the one that is closest to the emotional centers of the brain. How might this work? Say you decide to lose weight. You are not fully aware that at times being overweight brought you attention...and that you liked the attention, even if it were negative attention. So now you start the diet and drop 10 pounds, but in two weeks find that you gained 15 pounds. This is a result of conflicting levels of intention and desire, so unless you get down there and UNDOit, your conscious inten- tion will be overriddenby the deeper levels. If you wish to UNDO your deeper levels, tap twice with your favorite finger; if you don't wish to UNDO your deeper levels, smile and shake your head yes. The concepts that are learned and programmed at dif- ferent levels may be in conflict. We can ret urn to the earlier example, where a young chi l d learns that it is useful to pl ay st upi d to be accepted and to survi ve wi t hi n the fam- i l y. S ur vi val wi l l almost al ways supersede a ski l l l i ke orga- ni zat i on or punct ual i t y. Your higher rati onal brai n clearly understands that being organized and on time is useful, yet the l ower brai n, whi c h was i mpri nt ed and devel oped first, has more influence on how you feel. E ven t hough you know that you woul d be more successful if organi zed, the part of you that is "t aki ng care of s ur vi val " has a different perception of how to be successful the old pattern. Through the methods of deeper l evel holistic commu- nication that you are now learning, appropriate changes can now take place al l owi ng you to resolve these conflicts. Verbal communi cat i on alone is not sufficient to cause change and, i n many instances, i s unnecessary. Getti ng i n touch wi t h one's feelings and begi nni ng to use them as i nformat i on is also important. This is often referred to as emoti onal intelligence, instinct and gut feeling. 56 Energized Hypnosis It is i mportant to be able to differentiate instinct from rumi nat i on. Rumi nat i on is the random t hi nki ng that goes r ound and r ound inside your mi nd, i n your subjective real- i ty. Mos t people do not di st i ngui sh between the emotions that are caused by r umi nat i on and the feelings they have from external reality. When your brain is ruminating, you can rest assured that some deeper emotion is driving the thoughts. If you stop the ruminating for a moment, look around your mind, and ask it what the conflict is, you may receive an answer. When you translate the answer into simple language you may see that you are conflicted: angry, fearful or something similar. There are many reasons why you ruminate, but here's one of the most important: you believe that if you realize an emotion fully, you must act on it (and most of these kind of emotions which would lead to action could have been dangerous to your survival at one time and might even be dangerous now). What you need to realize is that emotion doesn't mean YOU HAVE TO ACT on it. Children have a hard time realizing this, so they suppress or repress their emotions as they mature, however those emotions still exist at a deeper level, and in adults often express themselves as ruminations. H o w do you learn t o di st i ngui sh instinct from r umi na- tion? Yo u watch and practice. Yo u l earn about how you work; then, when things are happeni ng you can stop your- self and remember what is going on. Yo u also need to accept your feelingsnot make them i l l egal and honor that communi cat i on. Us i ng your rationality and fi guri ng out where they come from, you wi l l be able to stop them before they get too bi g. They are like a fire al arm. Trai n your attention so IT doesn't geti stuck on it, and I T can be poi nt ed t oward the process and what you really want. F r om this point now you are i nformed and can begi n to use your rational mi nd to make better decisions. Thi s is why yo u have been readi ng about perception, the con- Energized Hypnosis 57 struction of meani ng, and brai n funct i oni ng when you may not been expecting to. You wi l l often notice that when you do stop in real time and use your new information to make new decisions, you will have new and different feelings instead of the old ones. A s you remember that feeling different is ok, you may f i nd that the new feelings that begi n bui l di ng are the l ong- awaited ones such as personal power, relief, freedom, joy and self-esteem. Verbal communi cat i on is not the language of habit or the language of the body. Every thought causes a reaction in the body and every body-reaction and sensation creates thought. These thoughts may not make any sense to youat least not to your conscious mi nd. Consi der how many interesting but " r andom" thoughts you have each day. Each one is connected to a set of belief patterns that for some (unpleasant) reason you prefer to forget. One sol ut i on is to try to rememberbut if not hi ng comes, then do somethi ng quite different. One way to effect change (and communicate wi t h your deeper levels) is to engage in behaviors that r un contrary to your feelings. Have some f un even if you are unhappy and see what happens. Whe n you are sad, put on some fun musi c and dance. Smile wi t h al l of your mi ght for t wo minutes or pretend to l augh. A " r a ndom" thought or emot i on may tell you a lot. Behavi oral experimentation is a great way to commu- nicate to your deeper levels that change is desired. It is important to first differentiate between subjective and objective reality. Wal ki ng al ong the ledge of a tal l bui l di ng should create some fear and anxiety. That is the useful func- tion of fear. Ha vi ng this fear when steppi ng off a curb may be somewhat excessive. In this case, t al ki ng and t al ki ng about your fear wi l l probabl y not do much for you (or others). But doing somethi ng di fferentl i ke practi ci ng 58 Energized Hypnosis stepping off a curb in a safe place 25 times a da y wi l l create a non-verbal l earni ng. As you think of some of the things you would like to change about yourself, you may begin to think of new things you would like to try. These will be the types of actions that you knowwould be beneficial to you, yet in the past may have only felt uncomfortable. These can be your behavior experi- ments. Write these ideas down in your notebook. Yo u may want to try these out in real life; or a part of you mi ght do this when you dream; or whi l e you are l i s- tening to the compani on C Ds and DVDs ; or al l of them. Ma ny people have f ound that some of the things they learn as they heal and evolve are not new, but remembered. It's as if a part of you has known al l along that deep down you are just fine, and upon real i zi ng this wondered how you coul d have forgotten this i n the first place. C o ul d this be your fidelity to an unhappy person of your past? Sometimes people refuse to be happy because...? Do you really have to be fai thful to your past? Our ability to think and i magi ne can create problems in and of itself. We must constantly strive to remember that our subjective reality is our own creation. When we create disasters, monsters and worst-case scenarios inside our mi nd, the rest of us responds accord- i ngl y, and then we experience the feelings that prove it. To repeat: When we create disasters, monsters and worst-case scenarios inside our mind, the rest of us responds accord- ingly, and then we experience the feelings that prove it. Energized Hypnosis 59 Often you will see this when talking to someone and notice that the problem they are having has been solved by the information you have given thembut they still continue complaining and ruminating. At that time you must realize that they are possessed, as if by a demon. What do you do? Either do nothing and watch; or, if you dare, pinch them. Often a mild shock can move a person out of this painful circle. I would have clients run around the block until they were exhausted and then allow them to go deeper and deeper until the demon would be exorcised. Once our psycho-physi ol ogy is goi ng in that direction, it influences our abi l i ty to concentrate, our abi l i ty to recall and our motor ski l l s. Thi s i n t urn creates objective "proof" that our i ni t i al "belief" is true, thus creating a sel f-ful fi l l i ng prophecy. Wh y are sel f-ful fi l l i ng prophecies sel f-ful fi l l i ng? A young man prepares to give a talk to a large audience for the first time. Inside his mind he pictures the audience staring at him with bored and disapproving scowls. Inside his mind he hears their comments about how terrible he is. By the time he reaches the podium, his heart rate has increased, his blood pressure has risen and adrenaline is flowing. As he starts to speak, he has difficulty remembering the name of the person who introduced him, and his internal dialogue starts to berate him. Soon he starts fumbling his papers and drops them on the floor, which further become "evidence" of his inability. He barely makes it through, and decides that he is a terrible public speaker. This is the common sel f-ful fi l l i ng prophecy. The sol u- ti on is to catch the process as soon as you can, and change it around to the way you want it to be. One way to change it is t hrough i magi ni ng. Begi n to picture i nsi de your mi nd what you want, use your internal dialogue to reinforce it, and generate the feelings that you 60 Energized Hypnosis want. Aft er al l , i t i s your mi nd, and you can use i t however you want. It takes the same amount of energy to imagine success as it does failure. (Every time you imagine failure once you may imagine success twicedo it now.) The young man in the story above can also picture the audience nodding in agreement and smiling, and then giving a standing ovation. He could picture himself behaving in a powerful and graceful manner, as he hears the compliments and praise of his audience. Since these internal processes influence your brain, nervous system and, thus, your outcomes, it makes sense to start using vour internal processes to contribute to your objectives, doesn't it. Does it? Failure is often fidelity For some people, this is a startling "AHA". Maybe you never thought of this before, and most l i kel y no one ever told you that you can do this. S o. . . now you know and can begi n usi ng your mi nd i n a deliberate positive manner. Anot her way to change sel f-ful fi l l i ng prophecies is t hrough your behavior; this is called "act i ng as i f. " At this point many clients vi ol ent l y object. They say that "act i ng as i f " is not " r eal " or "genui ne. " (But fidelity to failure is?) Aft er al l , how can you act one way and feel another? The answer is, you just do it. (Hey, who says you can't?) The person you have beenyour tradi ti onal and habitual selfis no more real than any other self you coul d be. The onl y t hi ng that makes it seem real i s . . . your f eel i ng habits. (Yes, most feelings are simply habits.) You decide. You set the direction, because if you don' t, then you wi l l si mpl y be f ol l owi ng the dictates of your ol d beliefs and patterns, whi c h were set in place before you were smart enough or had enough rational and perceptual ability to Energized Hypnosis 61 realize that they were grossly inaccurate. If you don' t decide for yourself, then you wi l l remai n "st uck. " The i mpl i cati ons of this are staggering. Your abi l i ty to " i magi ne" that you have a probl em wi l l send you on a mi ssi on to " f i x" it. Your abi l i ty to declare yourself "not ok" wi l l send you on a journey to get back to "ok. " You can replace "not ok" wi t h "not good enough, " "wort hl ess, " "undeser vi ng, " or whatever you prefer. The probl em is onl y a probl em because you created it and labeled i t i n your mi nda nd then forgot that you di d this. Thus, the problem exists only in your perception that something about you is inherently wr ong, bad or broken. If the problem exists onl y in your subjective eval uat i on only in your thinkingthen the j ourney t oward fi xi ng this problemthe destination of " ok" or " good enough"i s based on the presupposi t i on that somethi ng is inherently " wr ong. " Thi s is the type of probl em that can never be solved and is the destination that can never be reached. If you are searching and struggl i ng to f i nd your way to the destination " ok" , you cannot reach it, because you never left it. A n d a part of you, deep down, knows that this is so. I call the real i zati on and experience of this " comi ng home" or, sometimes, creative infidelity. Chapter 7 Every Behavior Has Served A Useful Purpose Every self-defeating behavi or and belief has at one time or another served a useful purpose. It is good to stop for a moment and let this sink i n. Every behavior was, at one time and place, in your best estimate at that time, set up for a useful purpose. Every belief was formed, at one time and place, wi t h the best of your ability to perceive and attach meaning to those events, to serve a useful purposeAT THAT TIME! Behi nd the useful purpose is a very noble i ntenti on: you were operating in your own best interest with the re- sources you had at the time to protect yourself and meet your own needs. The difference between N O W and then is that NOW you have more options. Yo u have gai ned more knowl edge, insight and experience since then. Your brai n has devel - oped more. Your wi l l i ngness to be curious, al though latent, is curi ousl y stronger. 63 64 Energized Hypnosis Right now is the best time to re-explore old beliefs, ideas and concepts because you have never been older or more experienced or more insightful than you are right now. You can decide for yourself nowif the old limiting behaviors and beliefs are the ones that you want, or that they can use some updating. There are causal chains that are N O W untrue, al though at one time they felt like they were true and appeared to be useful . Most early causal chains are manufactured by the creative functions of the early mi nd. The i mportant t hi ng to remember is that there is a difference between unaccept- able behavior and a useful purpose. S moki ng, for example, may have served the purpose of reduci ng tension, al l owi ng you to do otherwise stressful things. It may have made you feel socially acceptable at one time, or may have been an i ndi cator of becomi ng a adult. Whi l e the behavior of smoki ng has now become unacceptable to you, reduci ng stress, bei ng socially accepted and bei ng an adul t are st i l l useful and desirable. The i mportant thi ng now is to reduce stress and i mprove social interaction wi t h more useful and personally acceptable behaviors. Do you see how these neural bond chains keep you faithful? You mi ght call this creative fidelity; however, N O W i t i s stale. The funny t hi ng about some deeper analytical levels is that they are t i me-bound (fixed l i ke concrete in time) and are not aware of deeper changes that have taken place, or of the new possibilities. Whi l e many of the goals are the same, the behaviors and thought sequences created back then often are no longer useful and sometimes l i mi t i ng. Energized Hypnosis 65 Time-bound material is literally fixed at the time it was cre- ated and often feels like it is the "real" you... You may find a challenge here the time-bound material may not want to be brought up to the presentyou will know this when a lot of anxiety is present. In this sense, anxiety is useful since it provides you with important information. What do you do? Invoke a most pleasant memory and attach it to the anxiety... If you do this a number of times, pleasure will take the place of anxiety and you will be surprisedthe time-bound material will leap forward to the present and, if you desire, you can consciously update the material. An example i s a woman who had great difficulties i n experiencing pleasure whi l e havi ng sex. She remembered that when she was 12 her mother t ol d her that sex was dangerous and evi l . The purpose behi nd this communi ca- tion was to protect her from pregnancy and social rejection from peers. But in the mother' s attempt to protect her, she forget to communicate that what she said was useful onl y whi l e her daughter was young and vulnerable, and not when she was older and more capable of di scri mi nat i on. Remember: past useful i nformat i on and behaviors are al ways time and space bound. Fifteen years later, the daughter's body was sti l l react- i ng wi t h r i gi di t y and tension pri or to and dur i ng inter- course wi t h her husband. She was also havi ng great di ffi - culty getting pregnant. The woman sought treatment. Once she real i zed that her mother's communi cat i on was temporal (time-space bound) she began to relax and got pregnant easily. She was able to realize the useful purpose of the communi ca- tion, whi c h was to keep her safe by avoi di ng behavior inappropriate for a 12-year-old. She real i zed that there are other, more appropriate ways to keep safe besides absti- nence, avoidance and gui l t. But this gi r l - woman was faith- ful to her t i me-bound messages as wel l as to the image of her "mot her" as omnipotent. 66 Energized Hypnosis What this means to you is that you can choose to give up your self-defeating behavior now wi t hout gi vi ng up the use- ful purpose. To repeat: What this means to you is that you can choose to give up your self-defeating behavior now without giving up the useful purpose. Thi s way, you won' t have to wor r y about internal con- flicts. Resistance to change comes from the part of you that is holding onto the useful purpose, but is not yet convinced that the new behavior will satisfy that purpose. Once you ful l y realize this, you can easily decide what behaviors you can begi n letting go of, and what new behaviors you can put in their placebehaviors that meet your useful purposes even better. The important t hi ng to remember is that there is a difference between unacceptable behavior and a useful purpose. You might choose to think of things like excessive emotional reactionsfear and anxiety, procrastination and co-depen- dencyas behaviors, as things that you are doing, instead of things that always "just happen" to you. By developing the perspective that these reactions are not external or random will allow you to gain control over themand replace them with more suitable ones. To repeat: What this means to you is that you can choose to give up your self-defeating behavi or now without giving up the useful purpose (which hides behind the behaviors). I t is very common to t hi nk that behavi oral and emo- tional reactions are "caused" by things outside of your control, things such as situational and envi ronmental fac- tors and, especially, other people. Thi s belief onl y acts as a shi el d. I f other things and people are doi ng things to you, then it is not your fault and not your responsibility. Thi s Energized Hypnosis 67 may seem to remove you from the equation, but you are the one who ends up suffering. The fl i p side to this is that your response is not under your control, and you become a vi ct i m of it and of the factors and people who "cause" you to respond, react and feel the way you do. Guilt and Other Intrusive Monsters: Behind every guilt feeling there are beliefsyes, not just one or two but many... Put this non-book down for a moment or two, don't go deep, just touch the surface and feel. Sooner or later some beliefs will pop up and then you can analyze them critically. In another chapter you will find energized exercises that will bring forth hidden beliefs, thoughts and feelings. You might jump to that nowor simply continue on There are t wo common behavi oral patterns people devel op to combat their perceived lack of control . One is to become the aggressor and attempt to dominate oneself, others and the envi ronment. This entails forci ng yourself, others and your envi ron- ment to conform to your conscious desires. Mos t often this attempt results in your bei ng brought to your knees and humbl ed by those factors whi c h wi l l not succumb to your efforts. This then requires a more outrageous versi on of the faulty response to regain your posi ti on on top, thus rei nforci ng the problematic patterns and beliefs. The other common pattern is to become a vi ct i m of your past experiences, your situation, or other peopl eor al l of the above. Sooner or later you wi l l become a termi nal vi ct i m, bel i evi ng that you have absolutely no power or abi l i ty to change yourself or your circumstances. This response becomes sel f-ful fi l l i ng very qui ckl y, and creates pl enty of evidence that reinforces these patterns and beliefs. Yo u also tend to end up under the feet of those who have the aggressor's response. Either response is ineffectual and l i mi t i ng, and contin- ues to reinforce the pai nf ul and l i mi t i ng beliefs and pat- 68 Energized Hypnosis terns that are hol di ng you back. I imagine that you can fi nd i n your memory a few people who r emi nd you of these incomplete perceptions of how things wor k There are also many stories of people who have started out as victims and then used that awareness to create extraordi- nary lives for themselves, overcoming all odds. Dave Pelzer, author of A Child CalledIT, is one example. It is highly likely that you can find someone who has had a similar experience to yours, and who was able to decide to evolve anyway. Mor e often than not you wi l l f i nd mi xed types who swi t ch between the aggressor and the vi ct i m. Thi s type has sometimes been referred to as bei ng "either at your throat or at your feet." C a n you name a few people l i ke this? Whi l e it is true that external factors may serve as the trigger, and may have been the reason you devel oped the patterns and beliefs in the first place, your patterns are st i l l your o wn creation, and your reactions are sti l l your o wn doing. It may not be your "faul t " but now it is your respon- si bi l i t y. It is up to you to decide which things are no longer serving you and drop them. The good news is, you are free to change your style at any time. Or is being faithful to failure that important for ? You may not like the carpeting in your home. It may be old, dirty and an odd color. It may have been there as long as you can remember. Most likely you don't want anyone else to see it either. When you actually think about it, it might even "make" you feel bad. But, don't stop there. Remember that you can change it. The sol uti on is to begi n to become aware of your l i mi t - i ng beliefs, behaviors and patterns. Acknowl edge and take f ul l responsi bi l i ty for them. Let yourself off the hook, stop judging yourself and choose more suitable ones that al l ow Energized Hypnosis 69 yourself to reach your goals and l i ve the life that you really want. It is good to remember that you are not your behavior, and since you are not your past or present behavi or, you can redesign your behaviors to suit your current needs. Aft er al l , right now is the best time, isn' t it or maybe notmaybe yesterday was better, but what about t omorrow? If yesterday was better than tomorrowand today was worse then yesterday, what are you going to do NOW? As you read al ong and use the C Ds and DVDs , you wi l l have the opport uni t y to explore this further and begin to make adjustments. A s hew thoughts and ideas begi n to come to you, wri te them down. You mi ght l ook at it as a l oop: you change the envi - ronment and the envi ronment changes you. Remember that you are the part of the equation that you have the most control and influence over. By changi ng yourself first, your envi ronment wi l l begi n to change as wel l . Al s o remember that we have more influence over external and situational factors than we are used to i magi ni ng, and you can l earn to have even morebecause you have already, haven't you. To repeat: What this means to you is that you can choose to give up your self-defeating behavi or now without giving up the useful purpose. But what about yesterday, when it was better? As you begi n to develop new associations and beliefs and construct new behaviors, you wi l l , f r om time t o time, become aware of the less useful response re-appearing. This is not a si gn that it is not wor ki ng or that you are not l earni ng. It is a natural part of the process of change. When the ol d behavi or appears, si mpl y observe it and be respect- f ul . Do not j udge it or in any other way be cruel to it. Just as you have learned to wat ch your feelings, si mpl y watch. 70 Energized Hypnosis In a moment or t wo it wi l l recede into the background as it continues to undergo constructive re-formul ati on. As you gai n more experience, your sense of power wi l l increase. Whether you wi s h to change a belief or a behav- ior, engage it at its o wn l evel of communicationand always remember to be respectful to yourselfeven to your most hi deous qualities. Thi s was one of the major secrets of the ancients Self-change does not fol l ow easily after self-depreca- ti on and in a climate of self-hate. Yo u want to cooperate wi t h those parts of you, and you want their cooperation. Since some of your most power f ul and emoti onal learnings were acqui red before the age of 7, we urge you to treat yourself with the respect, kindness and understanding you would show a young child who is learning something new, or who is upset about something that has happened to them. Chapter 8 The Learning Perspective You are a l earni ng machine. It is the nature of the organi sm. The goal of l earni ng is just that...learning. The goal of l earni ng (or any new endeavor for that matter) is not perfection on the first try, but conti nued eval uati on and i mprovement. This is why it is important to be kind to yourself as you evaluate and learn. If you aren't, l earni ng can be emoti onal l y pai nf ul whi c h is why most people never do it, and whi c h is why most people remai n stuck for their entire lives. (How faithful are you to success?) They di dn' t learn how to learnwhich is how to do self- anal ysi sand find out what worked and what didn't, and then make the appropriate changes and adjustments as you go. Leave your value as a human bei ng and your sel f-worth alone (just leave it at 100%). Remember, for every negative self-statement, you may do two positive self-acts. You might be wondering why there is so much emphasis on learning. Learning is a process. We are a process, and a work in progress. Nothing in this universe is static. It is all always moving, always changing. The important difference is that none of these atomic particles and struc- tures feel bad about this. Only humans do this. [Howmuch faith do you have in feeling bad?) 71 72 Energized Hypnosis This bri ngs us to a very i mportant discussion, so pay close attention. Through many years of study and experience, I have f ound something very curious. Whi l e it is no secret, it is so obvi ous that many have si mpl y mi ssed it. Those people who have a bad time at life seem to be "met aphysi cal general i zes. " (See The Black Book by C. S. Hyatt. ) It seems as though success in life is inversely pro- porti onal to the amount of metaphysi cal generalizing one does. Met aphysi cal general i zi ng refers to the process of observing the actions and behaviors of your self and then assigning a value j udgment and label to it. Once this pro- cess is started and bel i eved i n, it becomes what is often referred to as sel f-ful fi l l i ng prophecy. Met aphysi cal generalizers put things into broad, global categories: 1.1 am fundamental l y good (worthy). 2.1 am fundamental l y no good (worthless). 3.1 sometimes am good and sometimes no good. Whi c h then leads to the external wor l d: 1. Others are fundamental l y good. 2. Others are fundamental l y no good. 3. Sometimes others are good and sometimes no good. That makes the stakes pretty hi gh, doesn't it. If in everythi ng I do, I am pl ayi ng for the absolute value and wor t h of my self as an i ndi vi dual human bei ng. . . No wonder people hesitate, avoi d, procrastinate, fal l short and feel anxious. We are constantly torn between our factual existence and our infinite capacity to i magi ne and fantasize. Or, one mi ght say, torn between our objective reality and subjec- tive reality. Just because we can label something doesn't make the label "t rue" of us. Energized Hypnosis 73 Science alert: In the field of physics, they have discovered that the characteristics and properties of an observed entity do not exist in the entity itself, but in the perception of the observer. Example: One would normally say "the ball is red." A physicist would say "the ball appears to reflect the red spectrum of light under certain conditions in a specific time and place." The quality of "redness" is not in the ball, but based on the perception of the observer. (Be careful not to turn this observation into metapuke.) So what, you may ask. Yo u may not even l i ke science (or di dn' t think you di d). But , i f you take what i s known from science, and appl y i t to yourself, you end up wi t h something very valuable. It means that the labels you have gi ven yourself (and the labels others have gi ven you and whi c h you agreed to) are not " i n you, " but are in your perception of yourself. S O, that means that all of the " l a be l s " l i ke bad, wr ong, st upi d, l azy, dumb, f ai l ur e, no-good, wort hl ess, and any- t hi ng elseare not " y o u . " SO Sorry, t o those of you who t hi nk that negat i vi t y, depressi on, bi g wor ds , and thi ngs that go bumpy i n the ni ght i mpl y t rut h A simple example: remember when you were a young chi l d, and another chi l d called you a "pi ckl ehead, " and you ran i n the house and l ooked i n the mi rror, you saw that there was no pi ckl e there (although yo u may have i magi ned it so on the way inside). H o w is that any differ- ent than those other things that you have sai d about your- self? So what then "makes" something true? We have di s- cussed earlier that our "feel i ngs" do not make things true, and now we are sayi ng that "l anguage" and l abel i ng do not make things "t r ue" either. As you wi l l notice, these strange and curi ous thoughts and ideas are circular and self-perpetuating. For example, a person in trouble comes in for help. The fact that they are 74 Energized Hypnosis in trouble and the fact that they need hel p means. . . you guessed it. These are exactly the types of meanings and beliefs that are formed when we are young, when the mi nd is not ful l y devel oped. It is a common initial reaction to completely deny that there is any possibility that "you" might have some of these kinds of limiting beliefs. I call this the "look under that rock again" phenomenon. When you are absolutely sure that you know that something isn't "true" for or about you, you will proba- bly find the answer by looking there again. Recap: Don't assign global value judgments to yourself as you are l earni ng. (Hey guysa trul y worthless person woul dn' t be concerned about bei ng worthless. Or , who is this I that says I am good or no good? H o w do you feel about this I ? Who in the hel l is she anyway?) Who are you more fai thful to, mommy or daddy? When you free yourself from this nonsense, you wi l l literally be able to do anyt hi ng you wi s h, as l ong as you are passionate about it and seek to learn as much as you can. . . ! ! ! In contrast to Metaphysical Generalizers, I have noticed another curious type of person. For this person, fundamental or metaphysical conclusions are not an issue. They are not relevant. He is a "Here I Am Person. " He si mpl y experiences events and situations, and if he generalizes, he does so f r om his observations. He doesn't need to know the "Great " answers. When he has answers, he has them. He likes events, experiences and things. He takes interest in things that interest hi m. Hi s sense of his basic self is non-comparative. Thi s means he uses compari son to learn, instead of for self-evaluation and j udgment. Energized Hypnosis 75 The identity of this person is the " Nat ur al C h i l d " who is unassisted by the need to discuss their o wn sel f-worth. They realize that worth is not a relevant issue, and cannot be. Have you ever heard of a fetus consi deri ng its wor t h for life before propel l i ng itself into life? Is it possible to be "wrong" or "bad" as a human beingat the level of mere existence? WO. How would one measure this? It is always done by feelings. The single most devastating error a young mind makes is adopting the fictitious belief that since I feel bad, I must be bad. But this does not prove that it is even possibleto be bad, or wrong, or worthless. It simply shows us that we have the power to create a concept, forget that we did it, and then become imprisoned in our own creation. Do you remember when you did this last? If you have to decide if you are fundamental l y good and wort hy of life, then you' re open to a wor l d of miserybe- cause your mental decision implies that it is true. Exampl e: If I ask you if you have ever seen a blue elephant, the ques- ti on presupposes that they exist. Most people never ques- t i on the val i di t y of the concepts they are i mpr i s oned by. Even if you decide that you are good and wort hy of life, your decision is open to re-decision because it was up for question to begi n wi t h. The sol uti on: begin to question "truth." The last paragraph in a box contains one of the greatest frauds ever pulled on us. It is the way in which people are manipulated and controlled by those in "authority" over us. That means parents, religions, politics, and all other entities that have a lock on "the truth." It is worth your time to carefully consider and understand this. The natural person, unassisted by fundamental meta- physi cal evaluations, is not vulnerable to such j udgments and re-evaluations since there were no pr i mal evaluations to begin wi t h. He is alive and needs to assume not hi ng. What assumptions are you fai thful to? 76 Energized Hypnosis N o w, I am wor r i ed that some of you mi ght begi n to feel that you are fundamental l y good or no-good. I f you feel that way, don' t be concerned because your wor k here wi l l br i ng you back t o your "unassisted self." Just because we habi tual l y t hi nk of ourselves in a cer- tain way doesn't mean it's true. It is i mportant to realize that the part of your map that describes yourself is also not the territory. Your self-concept is not your self. The labels were never you! A part of you may have responded to those old use- less labels and they were never you! P.S.: Welcome home to the freedomof being your true self. Tests, Exercises and Techniques Chopter 9 Communicating At A Deeper Level I n the previ ous chapter you read about a woman who wanted to get pregnant, but a younger part of her was t ryi ng to protect her in ways that were confl i cti ng wi t h her adult goals and desires. L i ke her, you may f i nd i n yourself that the purpose or funct i on of your behavior sti l l has a positive i ntenti on for you from its own perspective at the time it was created. That part of you is probabl y on auto- pi l ot, and may not be communi cat i ng wi t h you. One of your goals al ong the way wi l l be to develop a relationship wi t h that part of you. The idea of having parts is a metaphor for understanding yourself. Remember the idea of mood modules which implies that our individual mood-states have rent neurological circuits devoted to them. This also implies that the resources we have available to us at some times and places may not be available in others yet. The functi on of the l ower brai n is to protect the organ- i sm. Thi s i s accompl i shed t hrough the emotions, whi c h steered the organi sm (you) t oward and away f r om certain things that it perceived were nourishing or harmful...at that time of development. 79 80 Energized Hypnosis So, keep in mi nd that even if some of these beliefs and behaviors are not useful now, that part of you is onl y doi ng the best job it can for you. Earlier we discussed that smoki ng (for example) may have served the purpose of reduci ng tension, al l owi ng you to do otherwise stressful things. It may have made you feel socially acceptable at one time or may have been an i ndi ca- tor of your becomi ng a adult. Whi l e the behavior of smoking has now become unacceptable to you, reduci ng stress, being socially accepted and being an adult are still useful and desir- able. The important t hi ng now is to reduce stress and i m- prove social interaction wi t h more useful and acceptable behaviors. Other examples, al though more pai nful , are the con- cepts of self-sabotage, the fear of success, procrastination, and the lack of fol l ow-t hrough. These may have served the purpose of pr ovi di ng security and protection in situations that were perceived as " bad" or " wr ong. " When was yesterday? Which yesterdays are you faithful to? How many tomorrows are slipping away because of fidelity so NOW is not yesterday or tomorrow. If you agree tap three times with NOW'S finger; if not slap yourself with yes- terday's hand. I once treated a patient who was very stubborn. He resisted any hel p I offered hi m to gai n insight into his probl ems and change his behavi or. Hi s stubbornness took the shape of passiveness: sayi ng no wi t hout havi ng to say no. I asked hi m why such a behavior or habit woul d devel op. The answer fol l owed i mmedi at el y as he dri fted off into a l i ght trance. He responded that if he sai d no directly there woul d be a horrible argument and he woul d be persuaded to do what his father want ed regardless of how distasteful it mi ght be. Instead of sayi ng no, he woul d agree and either forget or sulk in silence. When he learned to argue better, he woul d say no to anythi ng anyone wo ul d directly suggest, even if he knew at some l evel it woul d be good for hi m to fol l ow through. Energized Hypnosis 81 I suggested that he try to remember one or t wo situa- tions where he sai d either no or yes and whi c h di d not lead to unpleasant results. I suggested that before he tried to remember these situations that he respond to my sug- gestion by l i ft i ng either arm if he agreed or by l i ft i ng the other arm if he disagreed. (Li ft i ng of the arms is an exam- ple of mul t i -l evel communication. ) For a moment nothi ng happened and then both arms l i fted. I tol d hi m to proceed as he saw fit, if and onl y if he was ready to drop one arm. I f he wasn' t ready to proceed directly he coul d hol d both arms out and move right along by passing over his need for verbal consent. Wi t hout goi ng into further detail, he learned to say no when it suited hi m, but onl y after he real i zed that sayi ng yes or no brought out immense fears of puni shment and desertion, created at a particular time and place when he had few other options to deal wi t h his authori tari an father and his mani pul at i ve mother. Di d he have fidelity? Take break now and look at some sexy pictures. If you agree, raise both arms; if not raise your other arm. Often the i ndi vi dual has no conscious awareness of these ki nds of under l yi ng beliefs. What they are aware of is the frustration, pai n and con- fusi on that arises f r om want i ng to move in a certain direc- tion, and somehow bei ng " hel d back" by unknown forces. Remember those upcoming exercises. Should you use them now or use them soon, or have you used them? Who is in charge here? The i ndi vi dual wi l l often have an aggressive attitude t oward these characteristics and, not real i zi ng their posi - tive intention, wi l l try to "chase those parts away wi t h a stick." It is no wonder why these parts do not generally communicate wi t h youand thus the need to begin to develop a better rel ati onshi p wi t h yourself. Energized Hypnosis I have often asked clients to get comfortable, close their eyes, and si mpl y notice the feelings and emotions that correspond to their probl em. I then ask them to say hello to that and to welcome it. This in itself usual l y produces a noticeable change, even after years of chasing it away. I then ask the client to apologize to it, for bei ng angry at it, and then promi se to acknowl edge it f r om now on as a valuable asset and resource. Next , I ask the client to ask that part of yourself to begin to communicate with you, and then to ask the part that is attached to the feeling to tell you and show you what its positive intention has been. Clients have almost fallen out of their chairs when their fear of failure tells them it just wants you to remember that you really do it seen amazi ng relief and self-respect grow when their anxiety gives them the solutions to challenges in their lives. Yo u can do this on your own, and the above exercise wi l l be hel pful to you as you wi l l be gathering some i nfor- mat i on about the useful purpose and beliefs behi nd your behaviors. Be patient, warm and welcoming to those feel- ings, and you wi l l begi n to strengthen your relationship with yourself Anot her method of communi cat i ng wi t h yourself is called the body pendul um. Stand in a quiet place, and ask your body to lean in the di recti on of yes. Then ask your body to l ean in the direc- t i on of no. Once you have established yes and no, you can begi n to validate this by aski ng specific yes or no ques- tions, such as " A m I a boy?" Thi s is another method to elicit i nformat i on from your other levels. Yo u may even f i nd yourself l eani ng sl i ghtl y i n situations wi t h other people, and find yourself making better decisions that honor you more. St i l l another method to communicate wi t h deeper levels is to set up finger signals. In the hypnosi s circle this i s called "i deomot or communi cat i on. " For example, you can decide that your right index finger is your yes finger, and your left index finger is your no finger. You can also Energized Hypnosis 83 do this wi t h your right foot and left foot. In a very relaxed, meditative state, you si mpl y ask that deeper part of you that it is willing to communicate with you by moving the appropriate finger. (But you have been doing this all along without knowing everything about it.) Now, this may happen right away, or it mi ght happen later whi l e you listen t o the C Ds and DVDs . As you begi n to trust those deeper levels, this becomes easier. You wi l l notice that your finger wi l l move somewhat differently than i t does when directed by your conscious mi nd. There is one last component of self communi cat i on we wi l l explore here. The results of the f ol l owi ng test wi l l pro- vi de you wi t h a greater underst andi ng of yourself. Take the f ol l owi ng test, circle the letter that seems most fami l i armost naturalto you. 1. As someone makes a statement you agree wi t h, your response is: A. I see what you mean B. I hear what you' re sayi ng C. That feels right to me 2. Yo u are most attracted to: A . Vi v i d colors B. Cert ai n musi c C. Somethi ng soft and f uzzy 3. The phrase: A. It's time to get focused B. It's time to t urn up the vol ume C. It's time to t urn up the heat 4. You just forgot somethi ng and: A. It's hi di ng right i n front of me B. It's on the ti p of my tongue C. I can't put my finger on it 5. Something fami l i ar: A. Seems right B. Rings a bell C. Feels right 6. Wi t h a fri end you l i ke to: A. Be seen for who you are 84 Energized Hypnosis B. Be heard C. Be connected 7. When angry: A. Get out of my sight B. Shut up C. Get off my back 8. The scary part of a haunted house: A. What i t l ooked l i ke B. What you heard C. What you felt 9. When you are i n l ove, you most t hi nk of: A. That certain l ook on your l over' s face B. Cert ai n things your lover says or the tone of their voice C. H o w you feel when you t hi nk about or are wi t h your lover 10. When meeting someone you want them to: A. Look you i n the eye B. Speak up so you can hear them C. Have a sol i d handshake N o w count up the total number of each answer, A, B, and C and record bel ow: Total # of A' s Total # of B's Total # of C' s Whi chever letter you scored the highest in most l i kel y indicates your sensory system preference. We all have five senses, and most often we prefer one over the others to communicate wi t h. A score hi gh in A ' s indicates a preference for the vi sual system. A score hi gh in B's indicates a preference for the audi - tory system. A score hi gh in C' s indicates a preference for the kines- thetic system. Energized Hypnosis 85 Learn different systems and switch them at wi l l . Some of you can feel that this is unnatural, others will hear the truth of this, and still others will see what we are saying Now switch these around: see what you are hearing, feel what you are seeing The corollary to havi ng a preferred system is that you may have a weak system, or one that you tend to discount or ignore. It's a good idea to begi n to recognize how you pr i or i - tize your representational systems. For example, i f you are most comfortable wi t h vi sual language and your internal pictures and movi es, you may miss important internal communi cat i on in the form of your internal dialogue. Or you may get deep into your feelings and not notice what is pl ayi ng on the inner screen of your mi nd. Oftentimes people wi s h to devel op their i ntui ti ve abilities, t hi nki ng that they don' t have any of that type of inner communi cat i on. Mor e usual l y, though, i t already exists and isn' t bei ng pai d attention to. Some people can "see" the future and imagine an outcome. Some may "feel " the best deci si on, whi l e others may have an inner voice that "t el l s" them what the right direction is. Your intuition may not be in the same system that you normally use to communicate with. Understand that your unconscious selfor higher self, or intuitionmay be communicating to you in ways you hadn't paid attention to. What will it be like in the future to further become aware of, develop and utilize this valuable information now? Is all of this in good taste? Balancing your systems wi l l increase your fl exi bi l i ty i n communi cat i ng wi t h others, and may open up new levels of available i nternal / i nt ui t i ve i nformat i on as we l l . The easiest way to balance your systems is to practice usi ng your other systems i n your language. 86 Energized Hypnosis I f you are pri mari l y vi sual , si mpl y swi t ch the vi sual wor ds to audi t ory and kinesthetic wor ds. I f you are pri mari l y audi t ory or kinesthetic, practice usi ng the other t wo systems. There are many "see," "hear" and "feel " wor ds and phrases to choose from. I t may seem uncomfortable at first, and that means you're learning. Examples of vi sual words and phrases: overlook, see through, i magi ne, vi ew, perspective, focus, bright, col orful , flashy, sparkle, eyesore, disappear, illustrate, reflect, exam- ine, looks fami l i ar, get the picture, see what you' re saying. Vi s ual people also tend to talk qui ckl y and use hand gestures. Examples of audi t ory wor ds and phrases: comment, listen i n, tune out, earful , harmony, noise, call attention to, last wor d, l oud, quiet, yel l i ng, shouti ng, sounds good, hear what you mean. Audi t or y people tend to use a lot of wor ds and lengthy explanations, and sometimes make noises and sound effects. Exampl es of kinesthetic wor ds and phrases: pressure, pushy, hot, col d, get a feeling for, trust your gut, numb, feel out, handful , to stomach it, j umpy, grasp, get a hol d of, put your finger on, wei gh options, hammer / dr i ve home, take a stand, stick to it. Kinesthetic people tend to touch and rub things, l i ke their hair, clothes and things wi t h texture. The field of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is primarily responsible for developing this information, and there are many books that go further in depth to develop and utilize it. Chapter 10 Interlude It was i mportant to first cover the material we have so far because now we arrive at an important poi nt : We di s- prove the "real i t y" of who we think we are, we learn how our brai n works, and we learn how to be ki nd to ourselves as we are l earni ng. . . al l so you can take yourself off the hook. Why is it so important to take yourself off the hook? We want to be able to see where we are at this point in t i meand he ok with itwithout generating any value j udgment about ourselves. Then we can determine where we wo u l d l i ke to be, and create and execute plans to reach those ends. The ends are i nfi ni tel y easier to reach if the destination we seek is not one that makes us ok, because this is i mpos- sible. We are already ok, you are already ok, and if we believe that someone else wi l l add anyt hi ng to our true being, then we are mi staken. Hermann Hesse says in his book Siddhartha that Siddhartha had not been able to find his true self, because he had been trying to catch it in the net of thought. 87 88 Energized Hypnosis I f we t hi nk that something outside of us wi l l add somethi ng to us, then. . . no matter where we go or who we become. . . there is something wr ong wi t h us, there is some- t hi ng that can be taken away. On top of that, if we do convince ourselves, we prove that it is possible to be broken. We are constantly struggl i ng between our factual exis- tence and our infinite ability to use our i magi nati on and fantasize. The reality of who you are is completely differ- ent than the reality of what you can't do. (Some people believe there is no you at all, only many you's... What do you think?) The key: first, be free of self-condemnation; then, act and observe the results you get. What you say to yourself about who you are is not wor t h muchexcept that that your useless self-talk often prevents you from doi ng what i s best for you. In the end, what counts are the actions and behaviors we engage i n; that is what gets us our results. What you do, how you do i t and how you make adjustments and i mprovements al ong the way to get the results and outcomes you want is "real success"or at least the path to it. Then, when you fi nal l y reach "real suc- cess," you may discover something about yourself that is far more valuable than any goal you can ever attain. I t wi l l be i nfi ni tel y easier to wor k on goals that come from your o wn self-acceptance than on goals that " wi l l fi nal l y make you O K. " To repeat: It will be infinitely easier to work on goals that come from your own self-acceptance than on goals that "will finally make you OK." If you start out wi t h the presupposi t i on that you are already OK that you are already complete just as you are- Energized Hypnosis 89 then al l that you doal l of your goals and proj ect swi l l take on a new gl ow. There wi l l be a new ki nd of energy around you, and you wi l l begin to attract the resources and opportuni ti es that enhance you. I f you l ook closely at your actions, behaviors and emo- tional reactions, you wi l l get an accurate assessment of " who " you are bei ng. (Stated more accurately, "who you are doing.") This can be very pai nful at times, whi c h is why it is so important to learn how to l ook at these parts of yourself wi thout internal subjective j udgment (whi ch normal l y leads to self-hatred and self-punishment). Who is this perfect one in you that is doing the hating? What makes her so special? Our goal up to this poi nt has been to give you the insight and underst andi ng to be able to l ook at yourself objectively (as much as this is possible) and say to yourself "OK, 1 did the best I could at the time. Now...what is it that I really want for myself?" You wi l l know that you haven't sufficiently taken yourself off the hook because, when you l ook at yourself, you wi l l feel discomfort. Yo u may deny it, become angry, frustrated, or feel depressed. Thi s is not hi ng to be con- cerned about. . . It's O K. Just realize that you are in the pro- cess of changing, l earni ng and evol vi ng, and if those feelings come up, remind yourself that you have joined a select elite group of people who are doing something different for themselves instead of merely talking and complaining. You are observing and you are doing. Separate right nowonce and for allthe idea of who you are from the idea of what you do. 90 Energized Hypnosis The caterpillar goes about its business, and lives the life that it knowsthe life of the caterpillar. At some point in its life, it begins to build a cocoon around itself... It closes itself off from the outside world for a little while...closes itself off from outside influences and opinions. And while it is inside the darkness, it becomes acquainted with its true self, and out of this true self, without anything being added from the outside, without any education from the external, comes the butterfly. The caterpillar l ooks at its o wn caterpillar reflection, and sees wi t hi n itself the butterfly i nsi de. It then begins to do what is necessary to become what it already is. This is so in nature, and you are a part of the very same nature. . . See your own greatness in your reflection, right now, wherever you find yourself, and begin to do likewise, as the caterpillar does. Chapter 11 Self-Analysis find What Vou Want To hel p you become a more power f ul and effective person and bring out your best possible strengths, it is i mpor- tant to assess your present and latent strengths. Whi l e the i nformati on of this analysis is not wri t t en in stone, it wi l l give you a perspective of how to continue to develop your style, updat i ng it where needed. A chisel is a sculptor's tool, and many sculpt in marble and granite. At first it can seem almost impossible for a begi n- ning sculptor to create something out of such a hard, imper- vious material. A chisel (or the sculptor, for that matter) does not complete a sculpture in one stroke, or in one pass, but in constant tapping and shaping, as one takes a step back to examine the progress and continues to make adjustments until it is just fine. I t is i mportant to determine what you want for your- self. Most l i kel y you have spent enough time t hi nki ng about what you don' t l i ke and what you don' t want. Thi s wi l l not get you where you want to go. 97 92 Energized Hypnosis If you want to get to New York, it won't help to focus on where you are and what you don't like about not being there yet. Instead of focusing on what you don't want and don't have, it is important to begin to focus on what you want. We wi l l begi n to elicit your strengths by anal yzi ng what you are doi ng now. As you analyze and synthesize the results, you then begin to increase your flexibility. I n this section we have pr ovi ded a di spari ty coefficient meter as a met hod for fi ndi ng out where you are now. You are to do thi s wi t hout j udgment . Ar e these the areas thatwhen you make changes in t hemwi l l bri ng you the most power, relief, joy, and self- esteem? Are these the areas thatas you begin working on themwill allow you to see your true self with greater clarity? Back to the Mat h. Here' s an example: where you are nowhas an overal l score of 3 and what you want has an overall score of 2; your Di spari t y Coefficient is -1. This indicates that you are better off than where yo u' d l i ke to be. " What , " you say? Yo u have either mi sread the instructions, made a mi s- take, or you are a masochist or a martyr who has been brai nwashed into bel i evi ng that less is more. 98 Energized Hypnosis O. K. , for real now! If your average score of what you have now is 3 and your mean score of what you want is 5, your Di spari t y Coefficient is +2. This is your goal for i mprovement N o w determine the Di spari t y Coefficient for each i ndi - vi dual question. A n y question whi c h has a difference score of +2 or more requires wor k. For example, on the i nt el l i - gence scale, your "have n o w" score is 3 and what you want is 6; your Di spari t y Coefficient is +3... A s k yourself: is this realistic and, if so, what mi ght you have to do to approximate the score of 6? (Remember, a 5 is al l you really need. . . H o w do I know this? F r om direct observation.) Take a break and t hi nk about this: Do people not automatically measure themselves against some standard al l the time? Are you using your own standards and are they realistic? N o w go back and use the questi ons under each scale to see how real i sti c yo u are. Doing this exercise, thinking about what you want, may have stirred up some feelings. You might want to use the tech- niques from Chapter 8 now. GETTING WHAT YOU WANT IS OFTEN THE FASTEST PATH TO GROWTH AND HEALING!!! Chapter 12 Making Changes Whatever behavi or is unacceptable to you now can be changed once you deeply understand the many useful purposes it has served in the past. This knowl edge does not have to be communi cat ed verbally or even experienced consciously for essential change to take place. For practice, choose any behavi or that is now unacceptable to you and make a list of up to three useful purposes it once served. Yo u wi l l want to dedicate a f ul l page (or more) to each thi ng you want to change. This al l ows you to keep al l correspondi ng notes, thoughts and progress together. Please read this chapter t hrough at least once before begi nni ng the exercises in the next chapter. If any thoughts come up that you want to remember, wri te them down i n your notebook or j ournal . State a behavi or that is now unacceptable to you, and write it down in your notebook or j ournal . This coul d be a behavior that you have and don' t want, or a behavior that you want and have trouble doi ng. Then wri te do wn three possible useful purposes it once served. For a behavi or that you have trouble wi t h, wri t e down the purposes it serves for you not to be able to do it. Unacceptabl e or A v o i de d Behavi or: Useful Purpose 1: Useful Purpose 2: Useful Purpose 3: 99 100 Energized Hypnosis When you t hi nk of the behavi or you don' t l i ke, most l i kel y there wi l l be a correspondi ng feeling. Behi nd this feeling is a belief. Yo u may have to go inside and ask. Wri t e i t down. Feeling: Remember that sometimes it is difficult to admit to having certain beliefs, patterns and behaviors. Of course, you don't want them to be true of you. If you find yourself getting angry, argumentative or defensive, that is good. It means that you are close. If you are absolutely positively sure that it's not that one, then it probably is. Justbe openand honest with yourself. If you played it safe and need to adjust the underlying belief, rewrite it and be honest. Belief: The whol e point is to stop hi di ng these things from yourself, to stop and l ook at the skeleton chasing you, and decide ri ght now that it's time for somethi ng new. Most of the probl em wi t h problems is that they are outside of your awareness. Bringing them into your awareness may not al ways be pleasant, but it is much better than l i vi ng your entire life hamst rung by them! Next, wri t e down what you want. I n my opi ni on, this is the single most important step. The more specific you can be, the better. If it is di ffi cul t to be specific, or if you aren't sure, then set a direction to go i n. Next wri te down a new preferred behavior that wi l l move you t oward what you want and meet your useful purpose(s). Wri te this i n terms of a process. Exampl es: I am now l earni ng to [new behavior] more every day. Preferred Behavior: Wri te down your preferred belief next, as if it is already true about you. Exampl e: I am ok just the way I am, and I ' m i mpr ovi ng every day. Energized Hypnosis 101 N e w Bel i ef: Begin changing any behavior whi ch is unacceptable to you now, but whi c h has served a useful purpose then. Begin by addi ng somethi ng new to your life that has nothi ng to do wi t h the behavi or you want to change. Yes, you read the sentence correctly. The first step in changi ng any behavior is to add some new behavi or to your life that has nothi ng to do wi t h what you now f i nd unacceptable. Wri te that down next. N e w Unr el at ed Behavi or: For example when I (Dr. Hyatt) deci ded that smoki ng was now unacceptable behavior, I began washi ng my hands vi gorousl y the first t hi ng i n the morni ng. Yo u mi ght ask yourself how somethi ng l i ke this can serve a useful function. M i n d and body paral l el each other. Thi s i s techni- cal l ybut somewhat i ncorrectl ycal l ed psycho-physi cal paral l el i sm. Every event in the body is paral l el ed by an event i n the mi nd and every event i n the mi nd i s paralleled by an event i n the body. We know thi s fact f r om physi ol ogi cal and bi ochemi cal analysis, l earni ng, and hypnot i c studies. The so-called placebo effect reflects the worki ngs of this marvel ous process. Di sregardi ng the other symbol i c aspects of washi ng my hands, the new act itself is at some l evel communicating that replacement behavior is now occurring. Ha vi ng dedicated some time to reflect and wri t e, you have put down some i mportant and useful i nformat i on i n your notebook or j ournal . Thi s may be the first time you have thought of this and put it al l down i n one place. N o w things are getting clearer, al l owi ng you to devel op a new perspective of yourself and your possibilities. YOM mi ght even start feeling more relief, hope and motivation now. Energized Hypnosis You can take a look at where you are, you have an under- standing of how you got here, you understand the useful purpose your old beliefs and behaviors served, and can accept them because of it. You can accept them and yourself as you are, right now, because you know what you want to accomplish, and you are identifying the new beliefs and behaviors it will take. It is a significant accomplishment to have just said this about yourself. You wi l l be usi ng this i nformat i on al ong wi t h the com- pani on C Ds and DVDs . Your j ournal shoul d now look like this: Unacceptable or A voi de d Behavi or: Useful Purpose 1: Useful Purpose 2: Useful purpose 3: Feel i ng: Belief: Preferred Behavior: Ne w Belief: Ne w Unrel at ed Behavior: After you complete this exercise, having gone inside and done some writing, treat yourself to something. Take a nap, have a treat, be nice to yourself. Chapter 13 Cnergized Exercises Who You Are! Drawing By MobiusFrame 703 104 Energized Hypnosis The f ol l owi ng t wo exercises are designed to open up your unconscious mi nd, exposi ng beliefs whi c h you can analyze and gently reformulate. TH FflC Yo u are very fami l i ar wi t h your face. Yo u do things to i t everyday, but do you know i t we l l enough to know what it is doi ng behi nd your back? At the begi nni ng of this chapter is a picture of the homunculus. I t is sitting on a device whi c h is where many of your ol d beliefs and behaviors bel ong. (A sense of humor is a good t hi ng. . . go ahead and laugh.) The features of the homuncul us are proport i oned to show the relative amount of brain-sensory area dedicated ,to a parti cul ar body part. Study the picture carefully. H o w aware are you that your face is pr ogr ammi ng your brain? H o w aware are you that your face is tracing your past memories? The face is significantly overrepresented in the brai n compared to its actual physi cal size. Is this a clue to something? Yes! Ar e you wi l l i ng to move your face behi nd your back? Go ahead, give it a try. Before you begi n your self programmi ng and self hypnosi s, we are goi ng to show you a few techniques that are designed to open up your bi o-neurol ogi cal channels. You have already learned that much of mi nd- body communi cat i on is non-verbal . The f ol l owi ng exercises are specifically designed to open up those channels and to push the pause button on the old, stuck routines, beliefs and programs. Sit down i f you l i ke; or i f you prefer, stand up and l ook into the mi rror. Just let it go. Mo ve your face any way you l i ke. Or make it stiff if you l i ke. Before you go deeply into yourself, make a face or two, or go wi l dor remai n stiff, r i gi d, letting nothi ng happen. For six minutes or so you can make every face i magi n- able or you can hol d it stiff, let not hi ng move, no twitches, do not even bl i nk or si mpl y let it fal l . Relax for a moment, Energized Hypnosis 105 now make as many faces as you can thi nk of that reflect your vari ous emotions and? Do not forget to use the forehead, nose and j aw. Keep on t wi st i ng or hol di ng steady. When you are done you shoul d feel t i ngl i ng in your face, more alert and al i ve. NOW SENSE AND FEEL This exercise seems so si mpl e that you may have been have tempted to try it earlier in your wor k. This exercise has immense power even though it appears almost beni gn. The power of this si mpl e exercise is so great that we have seen people t hr own into f ul l bl own anxiety after just a few minutes. At the other extreme, we have seen people who were so guarded in life that the exercise had no effect at al l , and onl y served to help the student practice his nature of not bei ng in touch wi t h his body. Li e flat on the bed. Breathe normal l y. There's no special need to breath deepl y, but you mi ght want to take a few deep breaths and si gh a few times. N o w, make NO vol unt ary movements. NONE. For one ful l hour talk out l oud, reporti ng on sensations from your body. I t is critical for this exercise that you not let even a moment pass wi t hout sayi ng something. I f you have to, si mpl y repeat the report you just made or use some vocal pause sound (uh, uh, uh. . . ) to make sure that you never stop t al ki ng. We don' t want you to fal l asleep NOW. Don' t bother to set an al arm clock to measure the hour; do it for what you t hi nk must be an hour; then stop and check the clock afterwards. Don' t check the clock and restart the exercise to get in an hour. However l ong you do the exercise, that is the time that wi l l be spent. A session mi ght start wi t h a ful l scan of your body. Here is a made-up example: " M y forehead i s fl at, my eyes seem stuck i n the mi ddl e of my head, I can't feel any tension in my jaw but there is a lot of saliva, my neck feels normal , there is a pressure on 106 Energized Hypnosis my chest as if there were a weight on it, I can feel the bed beneath my fingers and there seems to be a slight ki nd of tingle in my right wri st, my di aphragm feels a little like it is qui veri ng, my abdomen feels empty l i ke there's a bal - l oon inside it taki ng up the space, I am aware of my geni- tals, my thighs feel tight, there is a t i ngl i ng in both knees, my right calf is tighter than my left calf, I can't feel any- t hi ng i n my feet." Aft er you' ve gone over the whol e body once, you can do it again to see if there are any changes; or you can focus on one t hi ng (for example, the t i ngl i ng in the knees) and see if and how the sensation changes. If you are focusing on one part of the body and it is not changi ng at al l then leave that part and t ur n to some other part, or to a f ul l body report. It does not matter if you have nothing to report. It only matters that you do not let yourself stop t al ki ng and that you continue to focus on the sensations from your body. GOING DEEPER NOW This is a more advanced versi on of the "Sense and Feel " exercise. As such i t shoul d not be done unt i l you have r ung everythi ng you can f r om the basic exercise. N o w that you have done the basic exercise a number of times and are good at sensing your body, we are ready for this next step. Here, after sensing your body as usual , you pi ck an area of tension or other sensation, and you start to mani pul ate the sensation. I f it is t i ngl i ng, you may try to spread the t i ngl i ng to more of the body. If it is tension, you may try to increase the tension, or you may try to relax that part of the body. If you have a part of the body that has no sensation, is dead, try to put sensation into that part of the body. When you have modi f i ed an area of sensation, just wat ch it and report. Never stop t al ki ng. Don' t forget issues l i ke pleasant or unpleasant, scary or cal mi ng, hot or col d, alive or dead, light or heavy, etc. Just report everythi ng you can sense, stay wi t h the body, and never let yourself stop t al ki ng out l oud. Energized Hypnosis 107 EVEN DEEPER? We come now to another exercise. To get the most out of this one, you shoul d have a tape recorder. Wi t h a recorder, you can be concerned onl y wi t h your o wn body and emot i onsand, as you wi l l see, memori esand not be concerned wi t h what you say. The recorder wi l l capture what you say and you wi l l listen to the tape after the ses- sion is over. By the time you get here you wi l l have already done at least half a dozen si mpl e "sense, feel, report" sessions. Yo u have also freed up at least your forehead and eyes usi ng the face exercise above. Ha vi ng reached this l evel of your nature, you may have already noti ced that you are far more emoti onal and, at the same time, far more able to control your emotions. Let's ampl i fy the last one. We have emphasi zed that feelings and thoughts wi l l arise dur i ng sessions and that they are to be allowed to have their expression wi t hout your t ryi ng to suppress them. At this late stage, we are goi ng to ment i on another change that is l i kel y to have happened. You' ve probabl y heard al l your life that emotions are i rrati onal . Surprise, they re not! Emoti ons are as rational as al l of the rest of our bei ng. But, more i mportant than their rationality, is that they are subject to our wi l l : that is, they are subject to our consci ous, wi l l e d cont rol . We are not goi ng to go deepl y into how and why this is so, al though the f ol l owi ng example may hel p illustrate this. I f you have had chi l dren, you have probabl y done this yourself; you just di d not t hi nk about the general i mpl i ca- tions of doi ng it. Consi der a young chi l d. The chi l d is depressed or hurt and is cryi ng. Yo u say to the chi l d, " N o w let me see a smi l e. " You fi nal l y get the chi l d to put on a vol unt ary smi l e and the cryi ng stops. Yo u say to the chi l d, " N o w that's better, you feel better now don' t yo u. " The chi l d either agrees or ki nd of nods yes. What is the general i mpl i cat i on of that little scene? Wel l , cryi ng and s mi l i ng are opposites. Humans can't use the smile muscles of the face, and at the same time cry. One feeling fights and stops the other feeling. 108 Energized Hypnosis But there is a much broader pri nci pl e i nvol ved: we can, i n fact, control our feelings by wi l l f ul choices. Sometimes that wi l l f ul choice i nvol ves i mposi ng other emotions a nd/ or body actions; but that is onl y the technique, it is not the pri nci pl e as such. The pri nci pl e is that, in the last analysis, our feelings are under our vol i t i onal control . One of the changes i n yourself that you shoul d have noticed by now is that your feelings, when they occur, are (1) stronger, (2) more pure, and (3) more able to be control l ed. If you have not noticed that last point, that feelings are now more subject to your wi l l , then take a few weeks and pay attention to that fact. We don' t mean that your feelings are now arbitrary or that you don' t sometimes have a mood that you can not seem to shake off; what we do mean is that when somethi ng happens to whi c h you nor- mal l y react wi t h a gi ven feeling or set of feelings, that now you are muc h more able to set aside that feeling when it is not appropriate. There is a si mpl e way to illustrate this. You have just been stopped by a pol i ceman who is goi ng to issue you a traffic citation. N o w, there are t wo very common ways that people react to this situation: one is anger and the other is self-pity. Obvi ousl y anger is i nappropri ate, at least whi l e the pol i ceman is by your car. That pol i ceman has a gun, a night stick and mace. No matter what anger you mi ght be feeling, it is not very clever to express it to the pol i ceman. Li kewi se, wi t h self-pity. The pol i ceman is not goi ng to be i nfl uenced by your sad story. I f your l ong- wi nded expl a- nati on annoys hi m, you may be i nvi t i ng h i m to give you a second citation. So, wi s dom dictates that you wi l l f ul l y keep your feel- ings in check unt i l the pol i ceman is gone. If the expression of feelings were not under wi l l f ul control you coul d not do that. One of the great benefits of bei ng able to control or set aside a feeling is that you now no longer have to fear them. L ong ago in this non-book we menti oned that most people are terrified by their o wn anger. ( Di d we menti on that? Or have you forgotten? Or di d we forget?) They don' t get angry as much as they become afraidof their Energized Hypnosis 109 own anger reaction. But now, if you have come far enough, gone deep enough, you have seen that you can control your anger or any other emoti on. Yo u can let the feelings out or you can suppress them. Yo u no longer have to fear feelings because you have experienced that they are under your wi l l f ul cont rol you can let them have free rei gn and then stop them completely whenever you wi s h. N o w, for this most advanced exercise, we are goi ng to introduce another fact: that feelings are sel dom si ngul ar. It is sel dom the case that our body manifests onl y a single emoti on. Feelings differ in intensity, and most people are mostl y incapable of recogni zi ng (that is, naming) any more than the most intense feelings. But, as you free body area after body area, you become more and more able to sense and name ever more of the subtle feelings. We usual l y use half a dozen feelings as a rough goal. That is, at any one moment we search for half a dozen ongoi ng feelings (body states). Above we spoke about fear as a reaction to anger. That is, many people fear their own anger. That means that the fear and anger are both present at the same time. But, after al l , the anger is there for a reason. Maybe it is annoyance or frustration. That is a t hi rd feeling. Yo u are annoyed or frustrated about something. You are annoyed because someone i nterrupted what you were doi ng or you are frustrated because you were prevented from doi ng something you want ed to do. So, that annoyance or frus- tration i s mi ngl ed wi t h feeling sorry for yourself. You have a fourth feeling. But bei ng i nterrupted or prevented from doi ng some- thi ng means that the person who i mposed on you does not understand you. Yo u are feeling mi sunderst ood and almost i nvi si bl e, as t hough you do not matter. N o w we have feelings five and six. You get the i dea. The more you become sensitive to yourself, the more you are able to identify your mi x of feel- ings. That abi l i ty wi l l , i n t urn, affect your dreams whi c h wi l l change your nature. N o w we are goi ng to make use of al l these facts and abilities in this exercise. 110 Energized Hypnosis EVEN DEEPER AND DEEPER NOW Thi s exercise is designed to i denti fy feelings. Use the tape recorder to moni tor everythi ng you say so that you do not have to be distracted from your mai n task. Yo u have already learned to sense your body i ncl udi ng all the subtle experiences l i ke tension or lightness or var i - ous other sensations. The next step is to put an emotive- l i ke name to each body experience. We say "emot i ve-l i ke" because it is not necessarily an emoti on. It mi ght be an action-like phrase or a state-like phrase. Here are some examples. You feel tension in your calves. N o w you try to put a name to that tension. I t coul d be that the calf wants to r un, or it wants to pl ay a game like j ump-rope, or it wants to bend and pul l tight against your t hi gh. For each and every one of those actions your calf seems to want to do, you give it an emoti ve-l i ke name or descri pti on. Of course, al l of the above are only examples. Yo u wi l l f i nd your o wn areas of tension or lack of feeling around the body and come up wi t h the best descriptions and / or names you can. As al ways, don' t rush. Do not attempt to be a super pupi l . Take your time and do them thoroughly. The better you become at spotting and nami ng areas of acti vi tyor the absence of act i vi t yi n a body area, the more you can more use of the next step. O K, you have gotten fai rl y good at nami ng. N o w add the next step. You i denti fy the area of sensation, you name it, then you mani pul ate it. Recall that this vari at i on of the "sense, feel, report" exercise i nvol ves bei ng able to mani p- ulate your body sensations. So now we add this ability to our arsenal of personal power. The major goal is sti l l the same: nami ng. But now you are goi ng to name the i ni t i al sensation and then mod- ify it. You can modi fy it by increasing it, decreasing it, or movi ng it to another area of the body. Once you have changed the intensity or the location you are goi ng to name it al l over again. Here is a made-up example. Yo u notice that your chest feels constricted, tight. You take that tightness and move it Energized Hypnosis 111 to your abdomen. N o w it feels like disgust. Yo u take that disgust and move it to your face. N o w it feels l i ke di sdai n. N o w you go back to your chest to f i nd that the tightness has become l ongi ng. Don' t forget the point we made above. At any gi ven moment there are about a half dozen ongoi ng feelings or desires i n your body. Acknowl edge one, name, mani pul ate and rename; then go on to a second one. If you can't spot a second one i mmedi atel y, si mpl y rescan the whol e body; but, as al ways don' t al l ow yourself to stop t al ki ng al oud even for a moment. YES, THERE IS EVEN MORE Here we dr aw on al l the abilities you have devel oped so far and, usi ng those abilities, we move to another step. Here you are goi ng to empl oyor rather, a l l o w associations whi c h you wi l l report out l oad and let the tape recorder save for you. What do we mean here by "associations"? We mean that any thought that happens to enter your mi nd whi l e you are doi ng this exercise is fol l owed and reported out l oud. Caut i on: these thoughts are not, on the whol e, practi - cal issues (like how can I handle that task at wor k or what am I goi ng to do about the ki ds); rather, they are random thoughts that originate from sensing and/ or mani pul at i ng your body and whi c h seem to have no i mmedi ate rele- vance to your life. Here' s an example. Of course, you woul d have said al l of this out l oud to be recorded so that you can pl ay back and analyze the material later. " M y right hand wants to bal l up into a fist. What does it want to do? I don' t know. What does it want to do? It doesn't so much want to make a fist as it just wants to close the fingers against the top of the hand so that my hand is not open. Maybe I don' t want to shake hands. Let's see what comes to mi nd. Yes, I recall when my father i ntroduced me to some famous man and I just said ' h i ' and my father later bal l ed me out for not bei ng more respectful. But I di dn' t know. It was just another adult. 112 Energized Hypnosis H o w often have I been cri ti ci zed for not acting some way when I di d not even know I was supposed to act that way? Yes, it used to happen al l the time. I was al ways wr ong for doi ng things that I thought were proper, and then I wo ul d get cri ti ci zed for not doi ng it someone else's way. I just thought of my t hi rd grade teacher. She used to do that to me al l the time and I felt so inadequate and so embar- rassed that I tried not to do anyt hi ng. Is that why my grades in school were not good? Maybe I started usi ng that ' hol d back' pattern in al l of school? I don' t know. I t may be. But then I think of Justin. Justin al ways l i ked me. He di dn' t tell me that I was doi ng things wr ong. Yo u know, i t occurs to me in one way or another that al l my life I have been t ryi ng to f i nd other Justins. I have al ways sought approval and praise onl y because I assumed I was doi ng things wr ong like daddy and the teacher said and I have al ways expected the cri ti ci sm unless I got praise. N o w I understand why I di dn' t take that job, I thought I was too l i kel y to make mistakes there and again it wo ul d be just l i ke daddy yel l i ng at me for an error I di dn' t even know I was maki ng " That is free association. Yo u al l ow your mi nd to go from one idea to another wi t h no control or censorship. Whatever comes into your mi nd gets reported and it is al l recorded. Then, after the session, you listen to the tape and you can reflect on what you have learned about yourself and your nature. FINALLY, DEEP SLEEP? Some people wi l l be very good at this exercise whi l e others wi l l struggle. There is no good or bad i mpl i cat i on to either the ease or the struggle. It is si mpl y the way your brai n operates and is not something over whi c h you have control or can change. S i mpl y accept that this is easy or har d for you and let it go at that. This technique starts wi t h the abi l i ty to sense and name areas of sensation in the body. Here are the steps. 1. F i nd an area of sensation (usually tension). Energized Hypnosis 113 2. Name the hel d emotions or action tendency. Gener- ally there are t wo good ways to do this. One is to ask your- self what that part of the body wo ul d want to do if it had its o wn wi l l . The other is to vi sual i ze a bl ackboard where a wor d or phrase gets magi cal l y wri tten. 3. Gr ow that particular sensation such that it spreads over the whol e body. Don' t fight this, just do the best you can. Perhaps t hi nk of it l i ke a can of paint that has been dumped over that area of tension and the paint is gradu- ally spreadi ng over your whol e body. I f your arms want to hit, then your whol e body feels l i ke it wants to hit. I f your arms want to come across your chest in a hi di ng, protec- tive posture, then your whol e body wants to contract, shrink, hi de and be i nvi si bl e. 4. Once you have spread the sensation or feeling over your whol e body, then hol d that state, and re-sense your whol e body to f i nd a new area of sensation. 5. Spread that new tension over your whol e body. 6. At this poi nt, in most cases, a long-forgotten memory wi l l come to you. I f you don' t get a memory at this point, then repeat steps 4 and 5. If you sti l l don' t get a memory, then forget the exercise for this sessionit is not bei ng product i ve. The memory tells you a lot about yourself. First, it is the time when these t wo (or more) feelings occurred together. An example: embarrassed and st upi d; angry and futile; unhappy and stubborn; etc. Next, as you examine these t wo (or more) feelings in your life, you may be able to see how that recovered scene (recovered memory) has in one form or another been repeated i nnumerabl e times i n your life. I t may be something mi nor, expl ai ni ng, for example, why you are unwi l l i ng to try new foods. I t may be some- thi ng that explains a pattern of your life, such as why you keep getting fi red from jobs. Or it may be something major like why you choose to get a bureaucratic job instead of getting a job in the producti ve sector. If you have chi l dren, i t may expl ai n why you act the way you do t oward them. 114 Energized Hypnosis I n any event that recovered memory wi l l give you a wi ndow, bi g or smal l , into your nature and why you have l i ved the life you have. After completing these exercises you may have more insight and wish to add to your work from Chapter 12. Chapter 14 The CDs & DVDs N o w i t i s time t o wor k wi t h the compani on audi o C Ds and vi deo DVDs . You have your beliefs and behaviors pi cked out, you know what you want t o devel op. Thi nk about what it feels l i ke to have already succeeded in maki ng those changes. Thi nk about what your life will be like in the future, wi t h al l of those new beliefs, ski l l s, abilities and good feelings, NOW. Remember to go through your exercises before l i steni ng so you receive the maximum benefits and personal change. Wor k wi t h the compani on material i n a comfortable place, sitting comfortably or l yi ng down. Ma ke sure you won' t be i nterrupted. T ur n off your telephones and anythi ng else that makes noise. Yo u have wor ked har d up to this point, so make the most of your experience. 7 75 Chapter 15 Parting Thoughts You have read the non-book, listened to the C Ds and watched the DVDs . Yo u are maki ng changes. Us i ng the power of your mi nd you have begun to re-learn and re- groove ol d beliefs, behaviors and patterns into more effective ones. Cont i nue to wat ch and practice. Yo u wi l l have t o make decisions. Wat ch your emotions as they come up and go, and remember to differentiate between those that come from your ol d brai n and ol d patterns (feel and decide wi t hout thi nki ng), and those that come from your new abi l i ty to think and decide while feeling. Keep i n mi nd that feelings onl y feel l i ke they are true because that is their purpose. Your feelings are communi cat i on from another part of you. Step back and wat ch, then decide if they are true about the here-and-now, or whether they are comi ng f r om the past. If they are comi ng from the past, and you use them, you wi l l get more of your past. I f this is not what you want, then focus on what you want NOW. Mos t of what you are doi ng i s si mpl y ri si ng above your o l d program- mi ng and the associated feelings f r om it, and reprogram- mi ng i n a way that gets yo u what you want now. 117 118 Energized Hypnosis The little girl mentioned in Chapter 3 did just that, and now she tries all kinds of new things, continues to learn and grow, started her own business and drinks orange juice whenever she likes. Remember to separate who you are from what you do. Yo u wi l l make mistakes from time t o time. Learn from them. They give you valuable knowl edge and experience. You are not your actions, your past experiences or your story, so keep yourself off the hook. Keep on the lookout for that hook, and any time you are about to label yourself and make a generalization about your value or wor t h, say " N o . I am fine the way I am, and I no longer need any negative concepts, feelings, beliefs or behaviors to guide me any more. " You decide. You choose. Be respectful to yourself. Remember that any negative or positive metaphysi cal statements about you are non- sense. Yo u don' t need them anymore. Every day, start where you are, right now. Decide to let this be enough. Keep the passion and update the i nformat i on. Cont i nue to let go of the ol d beliefs that were pro- grammed into you whi l e you were too uni nformed to real- ize what was goi ng on. You have already gi ven yourself permi ssi on, so keep on goi ng. The two young men mentioned earlier have also used the information in this book and have gone on to live life fully. Through their own experience they are confident that it can be done, and that You can do it, if you choose to. How can they be so sure? They are the authors of this non-book. Ri ght now i s your time, your t urn. The single most important factor for you right now, is to decide to keep going. Keep re-evaluating, re-learning and re-deci di ng as you go. Yo u wi l l notice that pretty soon you wi l l be doi ng things that wi l l surprise yourself. Yo u wi l l f i nd that over Energized Hypnosis 119 time, what you are able to accompl i sh t hrough your changes wi l l seem mi racul ous to others. This remi nds me of a story about marti al arts. What is the difference between the Master and hi s students? Students practice di l i gent l y to attain mastery. To students, the Master appears to be perfect, even superhuman. The students believe i n perfection and mastery. The difference is that the Master realizes that there is no mastery, onl y practice. Therefore he devotes himself completely to his practice and to the moment. Because he is in the moment, and not measuri ng himself against per- fection, he squeezes incredible amounts of l earni ng and achievement out of his practi ci ng. He knows that there is no perfection, no destination to arrive at, that there is onl y the j ourney. Since he knows there is no destination, he is free f r om the bur den of "not bei ng there." A n d i n this knowi ng, he no longer has the fear of "not good enough. " The master believes in the abi l - ity to learn, adapt and i mprovi se, knowi ng that this is always enough, and compared to the average person, more than enough. The master believes i n himself. Why? Because he/she isand, therefore, there is no need to believe.
