CASE STUDY
I - Identifying Data:

A. Name of Student: Khim Christian Marabe
B. Year: Grade 7
C. Birthdate and age: May 13, 1997 16 years old
D. Address: Brgy. III Alaminos, Laguna
E. School Attended: Alaminos National High School
F. Problem : Online game addiction leads to lack of interest to study.

II Physical Characteristics

Khim Christian is weighing 210 lbs. and his height is 6 ft. He is big and overweight. His complexion is fair
just like his mother.

III Family background

Khim Christians father died when he was just nine years old and from then, his mother is the only one
taking care of him and his sister.

IV Description of the problem and Analysis

The students obsession to computer games leads them to not to study and focus more in playing computer
games which leads to tardiness, being absent, always blank during class, lack of interest in different subject, and
failing the exams or repeating several subject during summer.

The most prominent computer/online games nowadays are SF (special force), DOTA, HON ( Heroes on
Newerth), LOL (League of Legends) and many more. The nature of these computer/online games is two or more
teams will fight and they have to kill each other for them to invade the opponents base and rule the game, and each
character should reach a certain level for them to be classified as gods of the game.

Khim Christian started playing this games when he was in grade 6 and he was influenced by his
classmates, cousins and friends. He said that he doesnt want to play those games at first but during break time his
classmates always talks about the gaming world and he felt that he was being left behind so he tried to play different
online games for him to cope up with his classmates and friends. When he started playing it he liked it and started to
become addict in online games. He admitted to me that he is a computer game addict because sometimes he
imagine himself that he is a part of that virtual world and he is playing his own character and sometimes in his
dreams it comes to life.

I asked him why he enjoy playing those games and he said Masaya po kasi pag napapatay mo ang
kalaban mo at niyayabang mo na sya kasi weak po sya. In his statement I think that this students wants to be
superior in this area maybe because he is a slow learner and he doesnt feel that his efforts in studying is being
recognize therefore he find another world where his talent and abilities is praised and he is superior in that thing.

When he starts playing online games his interest in studying was lessen and now his interest in studying
doesnt exist anymore and all he wants is play online games all day long. He told me the real reason why he is
always absent is he was playing all night long and had a head ache in the morning so he will not go to school or he is
making some alibis to not to go to school so he can play computer. When he was in elementary his grades are not
that low but he is passing but when he reached high school his grades in major subjects are failed and he took 2
summer classes. I asked him about his studying habbits and he said hindi nap o ako nag aaral sa bahay pag uwi
kop o diretso na po ako sa computer kahit hindi na po ako pakapagpalit ng damit. Sa harap na din po ako ng
computer nakain. He is not making his assignments at home or even projects and he is not studying for exams thats
why he is failing his subjects.

His main concern is not to finish high school but to be a grand master of online games and be superior with
other people in the virtual world.

V- Action taken

The school principal talked to the students and gives him advices and the guardians as well. The principal
suggested to the guardians to limit the gaming hour of the student and always push the student to focus on his
studies. She also told the guardians of the different mental and physical consequences that might happen to the
student if he will continue that kind of life style.

The teachers make a huge step by tutoring the student without pay just for him to cope up with the lessons
and feel that he is being recognized by the teachers. The adviser motivates Khim Christian by giving him rewards
when he passes an exam.

VI Conclusion

The addiction of the student in online games have different causes like lack of self esteem, lack of parental
supervision or they feel that they do not belong in school most specially when they are slow learners or not accepted
by the class because they do not have a pleasing personality, so they find another place where they will be recognize
and praised by many people that they dont know.

Motivating the students by their parents and teachers will help them to be more eager in studying their
lessons and be more interested in school related activities.

Parents and the school should collaborate for the welfare of the students and should work together for the
greater good of the students.

CASE STUDY

I - Identifying Data:

The respondent requested to hide his name and his guardians names.

II Physical Characteristics

Student X is medium built and standing 5 feet and 7 inches tall and has a fare complexion. He is a good
looking boy.
III Family background

The parents of student X are separated and he is living with his dad as well as his 3 other siblings. His
mother is working abroad and his father is working on an electronic company in Alaminos.
Most of the time his grandparents and untie are the one who supervise them.

He lives a comfortable life because his parents are both working so in terms of money they are well off. His
parents give them what they want as long as it is good for them.

IV Description of the problem and Analysis

Students absenteeism is caused of many reasons like lack of parental supervision, addiction to computer
games, and lack of interest to studying, and friends influence.
Student Xs absenteeism is caused by lack of interest in studying and influenced by friends. I asked student
X about how they are being raised by his parents, and he told me that his parents got separated 5 years ago but his
parents still talks to each other and even though the mother is away she still supervise her children through her
relatives and with the help of the internet, she frequently chat with them and get updates about their lives. His father
is sometimes away because of his job and they are being supervised by their aunt and grandfather. He told me that
his dad is not that strict as well as his grandfather and aunt but always reminding them not to do things that they will
regret or careless actions that will lead to undesirable things.
I ask him why he is always absent, at least once a week, and he said nakakatamad po kasing pumasok
kasi inaantok lang po ako sa klase at minsan po nakakabagot nap o ang mag aral. That is his idea about education,
boring and non sense. So I ask him several questions for me to know his reasons why he is absent most of the time,
and one of his reason is he likes to mingle with his friends at home and play computer games or just stay at home
and do nothing. His guardians dont let him to be absent but he always find ways so they will let him, like he will go to
school in the morning and go home at the afternoon and he will tell them that his head is aching and many more
alibis. He is always absent when it is Wednesday or Friday because his college friends doesnt have class every
Wednesday and Friday afternoon.

His grades are low and he almost repeat several subjects last year but because of his high grades during
major exams and completed different requirements he passed them all despite of his 30 days of being absent last
school year.

V- Action taken

The school principal ask the guardians to keep an eye to student x because his knowledge and intellectual
potential is being wasted when he is absent. And she give several advices to keep the student motivated.

The teacher talks to the friends of student X outside the campus and told them to give student X an advice
to stop being absent during class days and instead mingle with them after class and the teacher lay down student Xs
potential which is being wasted when he is absent and mingling with them.

VI Conclusion

This case is not that unusual, absenteeism of students is one of the biggest problems of education. Lack of
motivation and peers influence causes the problem to student X and not his parents break up or lack of parental
supervision, it is the friends who are the bad influence and model to student X so therefore the school and the
guardians should both talk to student X and his friends to solve this problem.

If the students will be a part of a bad group there is a greater chance that he/she will be like them and it will
affect his/her life style and might copy their bad habits like smoking, drinking or even using prohibited drugs so
parents and teachers should tell their children and students to avoid people with bad habits and befriends with people
with good character and values.
