Recipe for a Happy New Year
are thoroughly free from old memories of bitterness, ran-
cor and hate, cleanse them completely from every clinging
spite; pick off all specks of pettiness and littleness; in short,
see that these months are freed from all the past—have
them fresh and clean as when they first came from the
great storehouse of Time. Cut these months into thirty or
thirty-one equal parts. Do not attempt to make up the
whole batch at one time (so many people spoil the entire
lot this way) but prepare one day at a time.
Into each day put equal parts of faith, patience,
courage, work (some people omit this ingredient and so
spoil the flavor of the rest), hope, fidelity, liberality, kind-
ness, rest (leaving this out is like leaving the oil out of the
salad dressing— don’t do it), prayer, meditation, and one
well-selected resolution. Put in about one teaspoonful of
good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of
play, and a heaping cupful of good humor.
SAINT for the WEEK
January 20 St. Sebastian
St. Sebastian was born at Narbonne, in Gaul, but his parents were natives of Milan,
in Italy. Thus it was in Milan where St. Sebastian was brought up. He was a fervent
servant of Christ, and his natural inclinations gave him an aversion to a military life.
Yet, he went to Rome and entered the army under the emperor Carinus to be better
able to assist the confessors and martyrs in their sufferings, without suspicion. He
was diligent in helping his brother Christians, and particularly those who languished
in prison. He not only helped the prisoners with alms but also encouraged them to
suffer for Jesus Christ. Despite his fame as the saint shot through with arrows in in-
numerable Renaissance paintings, we know little of this 3rd century Roman martyr,
buried in the church catacomb bearing his name on the Appian Way. Traditionally he
was a soldier promoted by the Emperor Diocletian to the rank of captain of the preto-
rian guard. His Christian faith only became known when he tried to protect victims of
Diocletian's persecutions, whereupon he became one more of the Emperor's victims.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.
