Know what God Looks like
A kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they drew. She
would occasionally walk around to see each child's artwork. As she came to one little girl
who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, "I'm drawing
God."
The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like."
Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing the girl replied,. . . .
"They will in a minute."

A Lesson From Seagull
It's easy to see why people like the seagull. I've sat overlooking a
craggy harbor and watched one. He exults in freedom. He thrusts
his wings backward with powerful strokes, climbing higher and
higher until he's above all the other gulls, then coasts downward
in majestic loops and circles. He constantly performs, as if he
knows a movie camera is trained on him, recording.
In a flock, though, the seagull is a different bird. His majesty and
dignity melt into a sordid slough of in-fighting and cruelty. Watch
that same gull as he dive-bombs into a group of gulls, provoking a
flurry of scattered feathers and angry squawks to steal a tiny mor-
sel of meat. The concepts of sharing and manners do not exist
among gulls. They are so fiercely competitive and jealous that if you tie a red ribbon around
the leg of one gull, making him stand out, you sentence him to execution. The others in the
flock will furiously attack him with claws and beaks, hammering through feathers and flesh
to draw blood. They'll continue until he lies flattened in a bloody heap.

 LOVE LETTER FROM GOD
Many years ago, a doting groom penned a love letter to his
bride. Stationed at a California military base thousands of
miles away from his wife, James Bracy's links to the lovely
woman waiting for him to come home were their love mat-
tered most.
But this letter didn't get delivered. Somehow it was lost,
lodged between two walls in Fort Ord's mailroom in San Fran-
cisco. The letter was lost in the shadows, with its romantic af-
fections of a youthful marriage, sealed with a kiss.
A half century later, James and Sallie Bracy had just fin-
ished celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and were
relaxing in the living room when "Once in a While," their
song, began to play on the radio. Sallie remembered affection-
ately the 1950s song and how she used to get calls and letters
from the man who owned her heart. They joked together
knowing there would be no letter or phone call this time be-
cause James was at her side.
Meanwhile, a construction crew was dismantling the old
post office at Fort Ord, and they discovered a long-forgotten
letter from a young army corporal. The crew turned the letter
over to Bob Spadoni, the postmaster in nearby Monterey. Spa-
doni began the process of delivering that letter, tracking down
the Bracys through post office records and phone books.
Just a few days after hearing their song, the letter, dated
January 28, 1955, was delivered to Sallie Bracy. The letter sent
her heart aflutter, tears welled, and she again became a love-
struck 22-year-old. "It meant a lot to me then," said Sallie. "It
means even more now."
Many years ago God wrote his love letter to us. It's
waiting to be delivered, to be opened at just the right time. It
meant a lot then, and it means even more now.

Are Fathers’ Necessary?
In How Now Shall We Live? Chuck Colson notes the disturbing reali-
ties that plague children who grow up without a father:
Children in single-parent families are five times more likely to be
poor, and half the single mothers in the United States live below the
poverty line.
Children of divorce suffer intense grief, which often lasts for many
years. Even as young adults, they are nearly twice as likely to require
psychological help. Children from disrupted families have more aca-
demic and behavioral problems at school and are nearly twice as
likely to drop out of high school. Girls in single-parent homes are at a
much greater risk for sexual promiscuity and are two and a half times
more likely to have a child out of wedlock.
Crime and substance abuse are strongly linked to fatherless
households. Statistics show that 60 percent of rapists grew up in fa-
therless homes, as did 72 percent of adolescent murderers, and 70
percent of all long-term prison inmates. In fact, most of the social pa-
thologies disrupting our society and life today can be traced to father-
lessness.

Bruno was brought up at Reims in Eastern France and, as a priest, later taught at the
Cathedral school there. He decided to become a hermit (possibly as a result of wit-
nessing the deplorable personal behaviour of the Archbishop, who had to be de-
posed), and after an unsuccessful start near Cologne moved down to the French Alps
near Grenoble where the Bishop gave him, and six followers, a plot of land which was
to be the origin of the first Charterhouse (Chartreuse), and of the Carthusian Order
named after it. The Carthusians developed a life of extreme simplicity, based on the
early models of hermit life in Egypt rather than on the Rule of St. Benedict, then domi-
nant in Europe. The design of their buildings, with individual cells built around a
Church, rather than within a large communal building emphasises the character of
their spiritual life. Bruno later made another foundation in Southern Italy where he
died in 1101. Given the strict nature of their rule, there have never been many Carthu-
sians; there is only one house in England at Parkminster in West Sussex.
Love is blind, but marriage restores its sight.
