Un Recuerdo a mi Pueblo

When I remember the days

that saw my early childhood
spent on the green shores
of a murmurous lagoon;
when I remember the coolness,
delicious and refreshing,
that on my face I felt
as I heard Favonius croon;
--Jose Rizal reminiscesabout his childhood, how he could spend his day relaxing and
doing what boys in those times do to have fun.
when I behold the white lily
swell to the winds impulsion,
and that tempestuous element
meekly asleep on the sand;
when I inhale the dear
intoxicating essence
the flowers exude when dawn
is smiling on the land;
--he is astonished by the things around him which shows how much curiousity he had
even as a child, he enjoys life for what it is, and awes at how nature produces such
things
sadly, sadly I recall
your visage, precious childhood,
which an affectionate mother
made beautiful and bright;
I recall a simple town,
my comfort, joy and cradle,
beside a balmy lake,
the seat of my delight.
--Jose Rizal is somewhat sad when he recalls how his town used to be, the same
feeling we get when we recall how things used to be in our homes, and how we wish we
could go back to simpler times.

Ah, yes, my awkward foot
explored your sombre woodlands,
and on the banks of your rivers
in frolic I took part.
I prayed in your rustic temple,
a child, with a childs devotion;
and your unsullied breeze
exhilarated my heart.
--here he remembers the joy he felt as he played in the town, how as a child he
explored everywhere his tiny feet could take him and let the cool fresh breeze be his
refreshment.

The Creator I saw in the grandeur
of your age-old forests;
upon your bosom, sorrows
were ever unknown to me;
while at your azure skies
I gazed, neither love nor tenderness
failed me, for in nature
lay my felicity.
--He saw in the forests the handiwork of God, and marveled at how beautiful it is. And
he stated that he could never grow bored with what nature has to offer because nature
was what he enjoyed.
Tender childhood, beautiful town,
rich fountain of rejoicing
and of harmonious music
that drove away all pain:
return to this heart of mine,
return my gracious hours,
return as the birds return
when flowers spring again!
--in this stanza he remembers how it is to be young, to have no worries and how easy it
was as a child, he wishes that he could return to those times, a time when the future
and suffering was far ahead of us.

But O goodbye! May the Spirit
of Good, a loving gift-giver,
keep watch eternally over
your peace, your joy, your sleep!
For you, my fervent prayers;
for you, my constant desire
to learn; and I pray heaven
your innocence to keep!
--in this stanza he expresses his thanks to his town as he says goodbye to it, and he
hopes that the town may still be as it was in his childhood, beautiful and Nurturing for
any kid who stays there.

Whole Explanation:
The poet (Jose Rizal) is reminiscing about his childhood and what he used to do as a
child. It also describes the sensations he felt. And how he marveled at the things that he
saw, it also shows the innocence of how children were in those time and how he the
author sometimes wishes he could go back to those simpler times, but ultimately this
poem was a tribute on the place where he grew up on.

--The first stanza expresses that for a country to be truly patriotic, it must learn to love
its native tongue, it must prioritize its own language over others and seek that everyone
of its people treasure the language.

PAGKAT ANG SALITA'Y ISANG KAHATULAN

--This stanza explains that the language of a country is what determines whether a
country is truly free or not it is what makes us steady as countrymen and those who are
born in it should learn to value its language.
