THESE PHOENIX GOLF
FAVORITES HAVE HISTORY
GO BACK TO THE FUTURE AND ENJOY GOLFING TODAY
By Brian Hurlbert
Golfng is one of the biggest recreation activities in Phoenix with a great
number of golf courses available. These three courses were built in 20th
century and still maintain the charm of yesterday while offering some of the
best courses in Phoenix today.
JW MARRIOTT CAMELBACK
RESORT AND SPA
If the saying, youre only as good as the
company you keep, is true, then you should
quickly reserve a golf vacation at Camelback.
Te likes of Dwight D. Eisenhower, Oprah
Winfrey, George and Barbara Bush, Cindy
Crawford and many other notables have stayed at
Camelback, a resort that dates to the 1930s. Two
golf courses are located at the resort including
the Padre course opened in 1966. Te newly
opened Ambiente course was built to replace the
old Indian Bend layout and designed to blend
with the historic feel of Camelback. For more
information, visit CamelbackInn.com.
PAPAGO GOLF COURSE
Papago Golf Course, which is owned by the
city, is pure Phoenix golf. Papagoits even
fun to sayis one of the better values in the
area. "Papago is a special golf course because
it was built in 1963 and has a very celebrated
past, said General Manager Jesus Martinez. It
was renovated in 2008, and course conditions
are always kept to a high standard. Its also
considered the best value in town, from prices as
low as $10 walking in the summer to a peak rate
of $95 during winter months. And if its a game
you want, check out our Pro-Scratch Skins game
on Mondays because it is frequented by PGA
Tour, Web.com Tour and mini tour players."
Papago was designed by William Francis Bell.

WIGWAM ARIZONA
Te name Jones in golf course design circles is
like Rockefeller is to fnance and business: iconic.
Patriarch Robert Trent Jones, Sr., arguably the
greatest golf course architect in history, crafed
the Gold Course at WigWam Resort, a layout
which opened in 1964 and was patterned afer
Firestone Country Club, another Jones, Sr. gem.
Te WigWam Resort rests on 440 acres and is
described as one of the last southwest resorts
built for a pure golf experience. Streams, canals
and touches that only Jones, Sr. could bring
to life highlight the par 72, 7,340-yard Gold
Course. Visit WigWamArizona.com for more
information.
