Kuala Lumpur Taknak Insinerator Operation Committee pointed out today that after their visit to
Japans incinerator(s) and interviews with Non-Governmental Organization(s) like Tokyo
Environmental Research Institute (ERI), they have managed to make 6 worrying conclusions. Those
include Japans dioxin level has exceeded the legal limit of 0.1ngTEQ/m3, the closure of ten
incinerators in Japan due to severe mercury contamination, the increase of 1 to 2 centigrade in
surrounding temperature that comes with the construction of incinerator(s) which will evidently be a
heavy burden for a tropical climate country like Malaysia. The committees media coordinator
quoted a report by Tokyo Environmental Reserach Institute (ERI) on wind direction which claimed
that the residual gases emitted by the incinerator(s) will concentrate at locations like valleys and the
plains between skyscrappers. It is important to note that the geographic location of Kepong is
surrounded by mountains. In other words, if the incinerator(s) were to be built in Kepong regardless,
the residents would have to suffer from the long-term air pollution due to the residual gases.

The air in Tokyo exceeded legal limit of dioxin level
He explained the fact that Tokyo Environmental Research Institute (ERI) is a Non-Governmental
Organization (NGO) in Japan which includes many doctoral researchers as its members. Their
professional research reports have vastly different views from those of official academic views. At
the same time, they succeeded in contributing to the closure multiple incinerators in Tokyo.

2.0ngTEQ/m3.

Nonetheless, he claimed that Tokyo ERI also discovered that the dioxin level has gone way beyond
the legal limit withs ome areas reaching 2.0ngTEQ/m3 after a series of tests involving the leaves of
pinaceae. The leaves of pinaceae are highly common in Japan and like humans skin it absorbs the
particles of the atmosphere.

Unfit for incinerators due to the low awareness on solid waste segregation
DAPs Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming pointed out that mercury contamination is a problem faced by
Japans incinerator(s) even with the strict excution of the solid waste segregation by the Japanese
public. Therefore, Malaysia, which doesnt have the culture of solid waste segregation, is highly
unsuitable for the construction of incinerator(s).

Solid waste segregation just took off
He said the government should organize an open forum inviting all academicians and organizations
in the nation who support and resist incinerator constructions to engage each other objectively on the
pros and cons of incinerator(s) but not just utilizing a series of defence arguments.

Mercury Contamination
10 Tokyo incinerators closed
Lam Choong Wah warned that mercury contaminatin is one of the high potential risks of
incinerators. In fact, from 2010 until now, a total of 10 incinerators have been temporarily closed in
Tokyo due to the severe condition of mercury contatmination and nearly half of all Tokyos
incinerators have been affected by mercury contamination.

He said even though CAT23 has explained that the mercury contamination issue is not serious and
has been handled appriopriately, he stressed that this is untrue after a correspondence between the
committee and a few anonymous officials.

Besides that, he quoted the director of Tokyos Ariake Incinerator Plant who said that incinerators
generally produce excessive thermal energy with nearly 50% of the heat transmitting to the
atmosphere causing a rise of 1-2 centigrade in the surrouding temperatures.

Think about it, Japan has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. They need thermal energy
during winter to warm up. However, for a tropical climate country like Malaysia on the equator , do
we really need that much thermal energy?

Besides, Lam Choong Wah also maintained that it costs 500 ringgit for every tonne of waste handled
by the incinerators. If Malaysia indeed builds incinerators, can we really afford the costs for handling
high loads of trash? And who should be responsible for these payments?

The committee will not give up fighting
KTI Operation Committee Chairman Isaiah Jacob insists that the committee will adopt more radical
protest actions should the government continue to ignore the peoples will.

He condemned the fact that in the three meetings between the committee and National Solid Waste
Management Department since last year, the officials have asserted that the government has yet to decide
on the matter of incinerator construction. Furthermore, on the 24th of June this year, the Federal
Territories Minister Tengku Adnan also affirmed that the government has yet to decide.
Nonetheless, the Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government declared on last Thursday
that the Kepong Incinerator Project will definitely go on. This clearly shows that the government has been
trying to lie to the people sicne the beginning.
KTI Operation Committee Isaiah maintained that the committees position to never give up fighting and
at the same time will take more radical protest actions. He vowed to have the government build the
incinerators over his dead body should the government insist. (Guang Ming Daily)
