On Thursday I aended the annual Priests/Principals
Gathering which brings together, not surprisingly, the
priests of our Diocese together with the principals of
our Schools for a day of reecon.

This years Gathering looked at the relaonships
between Parishes and Schools in the light and
aermath of the Special Commission of Inquiry that
has recently reported, and the ongoing Royal
Commission. It was, as you might expect, a
confronng day.

One of the presentaons on the day was given by Fr
Ian McGinnity, from the Diocese of Parramaa and
the Chairman of the Naonal Council of Priests in
Australia, and was entled Living with Ambiguity.

Drawing upon the Gospel that was heard a fortnight
agothe parable of the weeds among the wheatthe
part of the presentaon that I found both confronng
and comforng, parcularly in the light of issue of
abuse in the Diocese of MaitlandNewcastle, was the
twin call to remember rstly that only God is holy,
and, secondly, humanity is sinful.

In that light, members of the Church are confronted
with the presence of both good and evil in the Church,
the lack of black or white and the presence only of
grey in most aspects of life, and the need to live with
the innate tension that comes from the presence of
ambiguity in ourselves, in life, and in the Church.

As I said, a very sobering thought and yet, strangely
enough, comforng at the same me.

The Church, from top to boom, will need to connue
to do all with its means to ensure that children and
other vulnerable people are protected from abuse and
harm. On the ip side, the Church needs to recognise
that there will always be shades of evil present in
society, and the Church cannot reasonably expect to
avoid that presence just because the Church is the
Church.

The call to live with ambiguity is not an easy one, and
there will ups and downs along the journey. Together
however, and reliant on Gods grace, we will navigate
through the shades of grey that are found everywhere
and in everyone.

Unl next week.
