always; dväravata-at Dvaravaka; äväsa-residence; abhyasta-been; antaù-pura-within the palace;
vartmanä-by the path; prabhu-of the Lord; prasäda-palace; deça-place; antaù-within; praveça-
entrance; äçcarya-vähinä-filled with wonder; pürvabhasät-before; iva-as; abhyäsam-manifest;
präsädasya-to the palace; gataù-gone; muniù-the sage; bhütäviñöaù-entered; mahonmäda-
gåhétaù-a madman; ca-also; yathä-as; itaraù-other.

Çré Parékñit said: O noble lady, after hearing these words, Lord Maha-Viñëu's dear devotee
Närada, who holds a véëä in his hand, overwhelmed with love, forgetting everything, and like a
man possessed, walked on the path to the inner rooms of the Lord's palace, a path full of
wonders that he had travelled many times before.

bhümau-on the ground; kväpi-sometimes; skhalati-stumbles; patati-falls; kväpi-sometimes;


tiñöhati-stands; aceñöaù-motionless; kväpi-sometimes; utkampam-trembling; bhajati-does;
luöhati-rolls about; kväpi-sometimes; roditi-cries; atha-then; ärtaù-distressed; kväpi-sometimes;
akroçan-weeping; plutibhiù-with floods; ayate-is; gäyati-sings; kväpiù-sometimes; nåtyan-
dancing; sarvam-every; kväpi-sometimes; çrayati-rests; yugapat-at the same time; prema-of love;
sampat-treasure; vikäram-transformation.

Sometimes he stumbled. Sometimes he fell to the ground. Sometimes he stood motionless.


Sometimes he trembled. Sometimes he rolled about. Sometimes he cried out. Sometimes wept
floods of tears. Sometimes he sang and danced. Sometimes in a single moment he manifested
together all the symptoms of the treasure of ecstatic love.

he man-mätaù-O my mother; idäném-now; tvam-you; sävadhänatarä bhava-please be


attentive; sthiratäm-steadiness; präpayanti-cause to attain; mäm-me; sa-dhairyam-with soberness;
çåëu-listen; idam-this; svayam-personally.

O my mother, please be attentive. Please carefully hear someting that makes me become
stunned with love.

vaimanaçyena veñmanaù
antaù-prakoñöhe suptasya

tasmin-that; ahani-day; kenäpi-with a certain; vaimanasyena-unhappiness; veñmanaù-filled;


antaù-prakoñöhe-in the inner room; suptasya-sleeping; prabhoù-of the Lord; pärçvam-the side;
vihäya-leaving; saù-he; adürät-not far away; dehalé-pränte-the entrance; niviñöaù-entered;
çrémad-uddhavaù-Çré Uddhava; baladevaù-Baladeva; devaké-Devaké; ca-and; rohiëé-Rohiëé;
rukmiëé-Rukmiëé; tathä-then; satyabhämä-ädayaù-headed by Satyabhämä; anyäù-other; ca-and;
devyaù-queens; padmavaté-Padmavaté; sä-she; ca-also; pravåtti-hariëé-gossiping; kaàsa-mätä-
Kamsa's mother; däsäù-srvants; tathä-then; aparäù-others; tüñëéà bhütäù-silent; ca-and; te-they;

präptam-attained; aikñanta-saw; apürva-unprecedented; ceñöitam-deeds.

On that day, as Lord Kåñëa morosely slept in His bedroom, Çrémän Uddhava left His side
and came to the doorway. Then Baladeva, Devaké, Rohiëé, Rukmiëé, the other queens headed
by Satyabhämä, Kaàsa's gossipy mother Padmavaté, the servants, and many others became silent
and with wonder they gazed at Närada, who was acting in a way never seen before.

utthäya-rising; yatnät-with effort; änéya-bringing; svästhyam-natural state; nétvä-bringing;


kñaëena-in a moment; tam-Him; prema-of love; açru-with tears; klinna-wet; vadanam-face;
prakñalya-wiping; ähuù-said; çanaiù-slowly; laghu-softly; adåñöa-not seen; pürvam-before;
asmäbhiù-by us; kédåçam-like what?; te-of you; adya-now; ceñöitam-done; akäsmikam-
suddenly; idam-this; brahman-O Brahmana; tüñëém-silent; upaviça-sit; kñaëam-for a moment.

Rising, they made him wash his face and brought him to his natural condition. Slowly and
softly they said: "O brähmaëa, we have never seen anything like this. What has suddenly
happened to you? Please sit quietly for a moment."

sa-gadgadam uväcäçru-
dhärä-mélita-locane
yatnäd unmélayan natvä
sa-kampa-pulakäcitaù

çré-parékñid uväca-Çré Parékñit said; sa-gadgadam-with words choked with emotion; uväca-
said; açru-tears; dhara-flood; mélita-met; locane-eyes; yatnät-with difficulty; unmélayan-
opening; natvä-bowing down; sa-kampa-with trembling; pulaka-äcitaù-anmd hairs standing up in
ecstasy.

Çré Parékñit said: Bowing down, trembling, and his bodily hairs erect, with great effort he
opened his eyes flooded with tears, and with a voice choked with emotion said:

manojïä-saubhagya-bharaika-bhäjanaà
mayä samaà saìgamayädhvay uddhavam
tadéya-pädaika-rajo 'tha vä bharet
tadaiva çäntir bata me 'ntarätmanaù

çré-närada uväca-Çré Närada said; manoj{.sy 241}a-beautiful; saubhagya-good fortune;


bhara-abundance; eka-sole; bhäjanam-object; mayä-me; samam-with; saìgamayadhvai-I meet;
uddhavam-Uddhava; tadéya-of Him; päda-feet; eka-sole; räjaù-dust; atha-then; vä-or; bharet-
may hold; tadä-then; eva-indeed; çäntiù-peace; bata-indeed; me-of me; antarätmanaù-in the
heart.

Çré Närada said: Please bring me to supremely fortunate Uddhava. The dust of his feet will
bring peace to my heart.

Text 8

purätanair ädhunikaiç ca sevakair


alabdham äpto 'lam anugrahaà prabhoù
mahattamo bhägavateñu yas tato
mahä-vibhütiù svayam ucyate ca yaù

purätanaiù-ancient; ädhunikaiù-contemporary; ca-and; sevakaiù-by servants; alabdham-not


attained; äptaù-attained; alam-abundantly; anugraham-mercy; prabhoù-of the Lord; mahattamaù-
greatest; bhägavateñu-among the devotees; yaù-who; tataù-then; mahä-vibhütiù-very powerful
and opulent; svayam-personally; ucyate-is said; ca-also; yaù-who.

No devotee, either in ancient times or today, has attained the great mercy of the Lord he has
attained. He is the greatest of devotees. The Lord Himself has described his glories.

pürve pare ca tanayäù kamaläsanädyäù


saìkarñaëädi-sahajäù suhådaù çivädyaù
bhäryä ramädaya utänupamä sva-mürtir
na syuù prabhoù priyatamä yad-apekñayäha

pürve-before; pare-great; ca-and; tanayäù-sons; kamaläsana-ädyäù-headed by Brahmä;


saìkarñaëa-ädi-headed by Saìkarçaëa; sahajäù-brothers; suhådaù-friends; çiva-ädyaù-headed by
Çiva; bhäryäs-wives; ramä-ädayaù-headed by the goddess of fortune; uta-indeed; anupamä-
peerless; sva-mürtiù-own form; na-not; syuù-is; prabhoù-to the Lord; priyatamä-more dear; yad-
apekñayä-in that matter; äha-said.

His ancient and recent sons headed by Brahmä, His brothers headed by Balaräma, His friends
headed by Çiva, His wives headed by the goddess of fortune, and even His own transcendental
form are not as dear to the Lord as Uddhava is. The Lord Himself has said this.

prathitäni purätanaù
tasya saubhägya-sandoha-
mahima-vyaïjakäny alam

bhagavat-of the Lord; vacanäni-the statements; eva-certainly; prathitäni-famous; purätanaù-in


ancient times; tasya-of Him; saubhägya-of good fortune; sandoha-abundance; mahima-glory;
vya{.sy 241}jakäni-revealing; alam-greatly.

The Lord's words since ancient times show the great glory of Uddhava's good fortune.

tasmin prasäda-jätäni
çré-kåñëasyädbhutäny api
jagad-vilakñaëäny adya
gétäni yadu-puìgavaiù

tasmin-in this; prasäda-from the mercy; jätäni-born; çré-kåñëasya-of Lord Kåñëa; adbhutäni-
wonders; api-also; jagat-in the world; vilakñaëäni-extraordinary; adya-now; gétäni-sung; yadu-
puìgavaiù-by the best of the Yadus.

Today the extraordinary wonders of this mercy were sung by the best of the Yadus.

praviçya karëa-dväreëa
samäkramya håd-älayam
madéyaà sakalaà dhairya-
dhanaà lunöhanti ha haöhät

praviçya-entering; karëa-of the ears; dväreëa-by the door; samäkramya-entering; håt-of the
heart; älayam--the realm; madéyam-my; sakalam-all; dhairya-of peaceful composure; dhanam-
wealth; lunöhanti-plunders; ha-indeed; haöhät-violently.

Passing through the door of my ears, and entering my heart, that description has now
plundered all the wealth of my peaceful composure.

çré-parékñid uväca-Çré Parékñit said; uddhavaù-Uddhava; atyanta-very; sambhräntaù-


bewildered; drutam-quickly; utthäya-rising; tat-padau-his feet; nidhäya-placing; aìke-on his
chest; samäliìgya-embracing; tasya-of him; abhipretya-understanding; håt-heart; gatam-gone;
håt-heart; präpta-attained; bhagavat-of the Lord; tat-tat-various; prasäda-mercy; bhara-
abundance; bhäk-possessing; janaù-persons; tadéya-His; prema-love; sampatti-vibhava-opulence;
småti-yantritaù-remembering; rodanaiù-with crying; vivaçaù-overcome; dénaù-poor; yatnät-with
effort; dhairyam-peacefulness; çritaù-taken shelter; munim-the sage; avadhäpya-embracing; äha-
said; mätsaryät-out of envy; sättvikät-transcendental; pramudam-happiness; gataù-attained.

Çré Parékñit said: Bewildered, Uddhava at once stood up, placed Närada's feet on his chest,
embraced them, understood what was in (Närada's) heart, remembered the great souls who had
attained the Lord's great mercy, and was overcome with tears. With a great struggle regaining his
peacefulness, happy with transcendental envy, he said to Närada Muni:

sarvajïa satya-väk-çreñöha
mahä-muni-vara prabho
bhagavad-bhakti-märgädi-
guruëoktaà tvayeha yat

çrémad-uddhava uväca-Çré Uddhava said; sarvaj{.sy 241}a-O all-knowing one; satya-väk-


çreñöha-O best of the truthful; mahä-muni-vara-O best of the great sages; prabhaù-O lord;
bhagavat-to the Lord; bhakti-of devotional service; märga-the path; ädi-first; guruëä-by the
teacher; uktam-said; tvayä-by you; iha-here; yat-what.

Çrémän Uddhava said: O all-knowing one, O best of the truthful, O best of the great sages, O
lord, because you are the first teacher of the path of devotional service to the Lord, what you say
is certainly true.

tat sarvam adhikaà cäsmät


satyam eva mayi sphuöam
vartateti mayä jïätaà
äséd anyair api dhruvam

tat-that; sarvam-all; adhikam-more; ca-also; asmät-than this; satyam-truth; eva-indeed; mayi-


in me; sphuöam-manifested; vartata-is; iti-thus; mayä-by me; j{.sy 241}ätam-known; äsét-was;
anyaiù-by others; api-also; dhruvam-indeed.

All that you have said and more is true of me. I know this and others also know.

idänéà yad vraje gatvä


kim apy anvabhavaà tataù
mahä-saubhägya-mäno me
sa sadyaç cürëatäà gataù

idäném-now; yat-what; vraje-in Vraja; gatvä-having gone; kim api-something; anvabhavam-I


experienced; tataù-then; mahä-saubhägya-great good fortune; mänaù-pride; me-my; saù-it;
sadyaù-at once; cürëatäm-the state of being ground into dust; gataù-attained.

Recently I went to Vraja and saw something that ground into dust my pride in my own great
good fortune.

tata eva hi kåñëasya


tat-prasädasya cädbhütä
tat-premëo 'pi mayä jïätä
mädhuré tadvatäà tathä

tataù-then; eva-indeed; hi-indeed; kåñëasya-of Lord Kåñëa; tat-prasädasya-of His mercy; ca-
and; adbhüta-wonderful; tat-premëaù-of His love; api-indeed; mayä-by me; j{.sy 241}ätä-
known; mädhuré-sweetness; tadvatäàof they who are like that; tathä-then.

There I could understand the wonderful sweetness of Lord Kåñëa, His mercy, His love, and
His devotees.

Text 18

tad-darçanenaiva gato 'ti-dhanyatäà


tarhy eva samyak prabhunänukampitam
tasya prasädätiçayäspadaà tathä
matvä svam änanda-bharäpluto 'bhavam

tad-darçanena-by seeing this; eva-indeed; gataù-gone; ati-great; dhanyatäm-to good fortune;


tarhi-then; eva-indeed; samyak-completely; prabhunä-by the Lord; anukampitam-become the
object of mercy; tasya-of Him; prasäda-mercy; atiçaya-great; äspadam-object; tathä-then; matvä-
considering; svam-personally; änanda-of bliss; bhara-by an abundance; äplutaù-flooded;
abhavam-I became.

By seeing them I became very fortunate and attained all the Lord's mercy. Thinking that I had
attained the Lord's great mercy, I became flooded with bliss.

gäyaà gäyaà yad-abhilañatä yat tato 'nuñöhitaà yat


tat sarveñäà su-viditam itaù çakyate 'nyan na vaktum
natvä natvä muni-vara mayä prärthyase käkubhis tvaà
tat-tad-våtta-çravaëa-rasataù saàçrayethä virämam

gäyam-singing; gäyam-and singing; yad-abhiläñata-desire; yat-what; tataù-then; anusthitam-


followed; yat-what; tat-that; sarveñäm-of all; su-viditam-understood; itaù-then; çakyate-is able;
anyat-another; na-not; vaktum-to be said; natvä-bowing; natvä-and bowing; muni-vara-O best of
sages; mayä-by me; prärthyase-you are requested; käkubhiù-with plaintive words; tvam-you; tat-
tad-våtta-these things; çravaëa-hearing; rasataù-from the nectar; saàçrayetha-take shelter;
virämam-stopping.

Singing about them again and again, I yearned to become their follower. Everyone knew. I
cannot say more. O best of sages, I bow before you again and again. With plaintive words I beg
you: Don't be so eager to hear of this.

Çré Parékñit said: Understanding the meaning of what Uddhava said, Rohiëé, who having
stayed for a long time in Gokula was dearly loved by the people there, tearfully said:

çré-rohiëé-Çré Rohiëé; uväca-said; astän-are; çré-hari-däsa-a servant of Lord Hari; tvam-you;


mahä-durdaiva-by great misfortune; märitän-destroyed; saubhägya-of good fortune; gandha-the
scent; rahitän-without; nimagnän-plunged; dainya-of sorrow; sägare-in an ocean; tat-tad-vädava-
vahny-Šarciù-the fire of a submarine volcano; tapyamänän-tormented; viña-äkulän-poisonous;
kñaëa-a moment; acintä-without worry; sukhinyä-happy; me-me; mä-don't; småteù-of the
memory; padavém-to the path; naya-bring.

Çré Rohiëé said: O servant of Lord Hari, I am happy. I have not a moment's worry. Please
don't place on the path of my memory they whom misfortune has destroyed, who have not the
slightest scent of good fortune, who are plunged in an ocean of sorrows, who are poisoned, who
are set aflame by a host of burning volcanoes.

api-although; roditi-cries; açaneù-than a thunderbolt; api-even; antaiù-within; dalati-breaks;
dhruvam-indeed; jévan-living; måtänäm-of the dead; anyäsäm-of others; värtäm-news; ko 'pi-
something; mukham-on the mouth; nayet-place.

When Mahäräja Vasudeva took me (to Mathurä) Yaçodä cried so bitterly her tears broke
what is harder than thunderbolts. On his mouth who can place the news of the other women
there, who were like the living dead?

athägataà guru-gåhät
tvat-prabhuà prati kiïcana
saìkñepeëaiva tad-våttaà
duùkhäd akathayaà ku-dhéù

atha-then; ägatam-arrived; guru-of the guru; gåhät-from the home; tvat-your; prabhum-
master; prati-to; kiïcana-something; saìkñepeëa-in summary; eva-indeed; tat-that; våttam-news;
duùkhät-out of grief; akathayam-I say; ku-dhéù-a fool.

When your master returned from His guru's home I, being a fool, briefly and sadly told Him
their story.

na hi komalitaà cittaà
tenäpy asya yato bhavän
sandeça-cäturé-vidyä-
pragalbhaù preñitaù param

na-not; hi-certainly; komalitam-softened; cittam-heart; tena-by Him; api-also; asya-of Him;


yataù-because; bhavän-you; sandeça-of messages; cäturé-vidyä-pragalbhaù-eloquent; preñitaù-
sent; param-then.

His heart was not softened, for (He did not return, but in His stead) sent you, an eloquent
speaker of messages.

ayam eva hi kià teñu


tvat-prabhoù paramo mahän
anugraha-prasädo yas
tätparyeëocyate tvayä

ayam-this; eva-indeed; hi-indeed; kim-whether?; teñu-among them; tvat-prabhoù-of yoru


master; paramaù-better; mahän-great; anugraha-prasädaù-mercy; yaù-ehich; tätparyeëa-by the
meaning; ucyate-is said; tvayä-by you.
Why, then, do you say that your master has given His best mercy to them?

vraje-to Vraja; avrajat-went; tataù-then; hi-certainly; pütana-ädibhyaù-beginning with Pütanä;
keçi-antebhyaù-ending with Keçé; muhur muhuù-again and again; daityebhyaù-from the
demons; varuëendra-ädi-beginning with Varuëa; devebhyaù-the demigods; ajagara-äditaù-
beginning with a serpent; tathä-then; cirantana-old; svéya-own; çakaöa-cart; arjuna-arjuna trees;
bhaìgataù-breaking; kaù-who?; vä-or; na-not; upadravaù-calamity; tatra-there; jätaù-born; vraja-
Vraja; vinäçakaù-destroying; tatratyaù-there; tu-indeed; janaù-the people; kiïcit-something; te-
they; anusandadhate-became worried; na-not; tat-that.

When Kåñëa was in Vraja, from demons beginning with Pütanä and ending with Keçé, from
demigods beginning with Varuëa and Indra, from a serpent and other creatures, from the
breaking of the old cart and the arjuna trees, what calamity did not attack Vraja before my own
eyes? Still, the people there were not troubled.

mohitä iva kåñëasya


maìgalaà tatra tatra hi
icchanti sarvadä svéyaà
näpekñante ca karhicit

mohitaù-charmed; iva-as if; kåñëasya-of Kåñëa; maìgalam-auspiciousness; tatra tatra-


wherever; hi-indeed; icchanti-they desire; sarvadä-always; svéyam-for themselves; na-not;
apekñante-they consider; ca-also; karhicit-at all.
It was as if they had become enchanted. They always wished for Kåñëa's welfare and they
never considered their own.

sva-bhäva-sauhådenaiva
yat kiïcit sarvam ätmanaù
asyopakalpayante sma
nanda-sünoù sukhäya tat

sva-bhäva-sauhådena-by natural friendship; eva-indeed; yat-what; kiïcit-something; sarvam-


all; ätmanaù-personally; asya-of Him; upakalpayante sma-they considered; nanda-sünoù-of

They never gave Him even shoes! When, tortured by hunger, He drank a little milk, the

Deeply intelligent Rohiëé, who was very dear to Vraja, ignored her words and chose to

All of you please hear what I have heard. When He sleeps at night sometimes He sweetly and
lovingly calls many cows by name and sometimes he calls His charming gopa friends.
Sometimes His transcendental form bends in three places and He pretends to place the flute to
His mouth. Sometimes He says, "Mother, give Me some fresh butter!" Sometimes He calls to
me, {.sy 168}Çré Rädhä! Lalitä!" Sometimes He says, "Candrävalé, why?" and tugs at my
garment. Sometimes, as He sleeps, He softens the pillow with many tears.

Suddenly rising from the bed, He weeps, making sounds of grief, and by this we become
plunged in an ocean of tormented grief.

Seeing something in a dream last night, He has become very depressed. Weeping in grief, He
covers His head with a blanket and pretends to sleep. Today He has not done any of His regular
duties.

Awake He is dazed, as if in His heart He sleeps, and again and again He (laments) as when
He slept. We are His wives in name only. His young gopé maidservants are more dear to Him
than we.

there (in Vraja) is only His expert skill at cheating others.

Although, wishing to bring the (people there) to an auspicious condition of life, I stayed (in
Vraja) for two months, with my words and deeds I was not able to do it.

Seeing that no one but Kåñëa could help them, with hundreds of promises I comforted them a
little, and then I quickly returned here.

His mouth said, "I will go," but His heart did not say it. His deeds bear witness to the real

Çré Parékñit said: Hearing this, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is conquered by
His dear devotees' love, suddenly rose from bed and, weeping loudly, went outside.

May they somehow become happy. I have cruelly brought great suffering to they whose

Then Padmavaté, who is the Lord's old grandmother and Yaduräja Ugrasena's senile queen,
who feared that now the kingdom would be given away in charity, and who felt insulted because
Balaräma's mother would not listen to her words,in order to protect her husband's kingdom,
cleverly spoke, as if joking.

Garga Muni will calculate every morsel of food You two brothers ate for the eleven years You
protected the cows in Nanda's home. Then I promise that my husband (Ugrasena) will give him
(Nanda) twice that. I promise this.

mercy! Miserable! Miserable is the life-breath that still stays on our throats! Miserable!
Miserable are Nanda and the gopas, who left Kåñëa behind and brought us these things!"

Overcome with grief, and thinking he had committed an offense, Nanda could not speak for
three days. Then, explaining with great reason, and repeating Your promise to return, He gave
hope to the people of Vraja and saved their lives.

When Kåñëa was behind a tree or something else, His friends would call out, "Çré Kåñëa!
Kåñëa! with a loud sound. Without Kåñëa every moment of the day and night became like a
yuga for the people of Vraja. Again and again they looked for the sun or the pathway of dust or
listened for the flute.

Note: When during the day Kåñëa was protecting the cows in the pasturing ground, the
people of Vraja anxiously waited for His return. They looked to see how soon the sun would set
(the time of Kåñëa's return), they looked in the distance for signs of dust raised by the cows'
hooves (the harbinger of Kåñëa's return), and they listened for the sound of Kåñëa playing the
flute.

There are many splendid lakes fragrant with lotus flowers moving with the pastimes of many
intoxicated water-birds and bumblebees. There the very wonderful Yamunä touches the land of
Vraja. There many other rivers like the Yamunä gloriously flow from the Vindhya Hills and
other places.

The charming river and lake shores are filled with delicate bakula flowers, covered with fresh
grass, crowded with many different birds and animals free from natural feelings of enmity,
decorated with many vines, trees, and bushes bowing down with the great weight of many
splendid fruits, flowers, and blossoming twigs, and musical with the sounds of maddened
peacocks and cuckoos. They are the object of Brahmä's prayers.

In the land of Vraja, in Våndävana forest, or on Govardhana Hill, places where there is no
danger of their being killed or stolen, the cows, buffaloes, and other animals go in the morning,
eat grass and drink water to their heart's content, and then voluntarily return to their homes in the
evening.

Note: The people of Vraja have no need to lure Kåñëa back to protect the cows that can take
care of themselves and need no protector.

Çré Balaräma said: O Kåñëa, what can I say about the cows? Everyone in Vraja is dear to
You. The deer, birds, trees headed by the bhäëòéras and kadambas, vines, forest groves, and
even the grass have now given up their lives for Your sake. Even the hills and rivers have
withered and gone dry.

Brother, nourished by the hope that You will keep Your promise, a few humans remain alive.
You don't wish to hear any more.

If You are not kind to them now, then death will quickly be kind to them.

That You removed the posion from Käliya lake makes them lament bitterly. Now please hear
another reason for their lamentation.

tatratyä-there; yamunä-the Yamunä; su-very; alpa-little; jalä-water; çuñkä-dry; iva-as if; sä-it;
ajani-has become; govardhanaù-Govardhana Hill; abhüt-has become; nécaù-low; asau-it; svaù-
own; präptaù-attained; yaù-who; dhåtaù-held; tvayä-by You.
The Yamunä river has very little water. It is almost dry. Govardhana Hill, which You
personally held, has become stunted.

tvan-nämämåta-sevinäm
paraà çuñka-mahäraëya-
dävägnir bhavitä gatiù

na-not; yänti-go; anaçanät-from not eating; präëaù-life; tvat-of You; näma-of the name;
amåta-by the nectar; sevinäm-served; param-then; çuñka-dry; mahä-great; araëya-däva-forest;
agniù-fire; bhavitä-will be; gatiù-destination.

They do not eat, but because they still drink the nectar of Your name death does not leave
them. Their future is a fire in the great dry forest.

overcome with grief; kaëöhe-on the neck; gåhétvä-grasping; mådula-gentle; svabhävakaù-nature;
rämäm-Balaräma; mahä-déna-vat-as a very poor person; açru-of tears; dhärayä-with a stream;
dhauta-washed; aìga-rägaù-what was anointing His body; arudat-wept; ucca-su-svaram-loudly.

Çré Parékñit said: Hearing this, gentle Kåñëa was overwhelmed with grief. Clinging to
Balaräma's neck, He loudly wept as if He were the most miserable person. The stream of His
tears washed away the ointments decorating His body.

mother; çré-satyabhämä-Çré Satyabhämä; ädayaù-beginning with; sarve-all; antaù-pura-väsinaù-
residents of the palace; vikalatäm-devastation; bhejuù-attained; rudantaù-weeping; muhuù-at
every moment.

O mother, then Kåñëa and Balaräma rolled about on the ground and, after a moment, fainted.
Seeing the unprecedented nature of Their weeping and pain, Rohiëé, Devaké, Rukmiëi,
Satyabhämä, and everyone else in the palace's inner rooms became overwhelmed with grief.
They wept again and again.

Supreme Lord; dåñövä-seeing; arudan-cried; vihvaläù-overcome with grief; vipräù-the
brähmaëas; garga-by Garga Muni; mukhäù-headed; tathä-then; pura-janäù-the citizens; ca-also;
apürva-dåñöa-ékñayä-by a sight never seen before.

Hearing from the palace's inner rooms screams of grief never heard before, Vasudeva and the
Yädavas headed by Ugrasena quickly ran there. Arriving, and seeing their Lord in that way, they
wept, overcome with grief. By seeing this sight, which had never been seen before, the people of
the city and the brähmaëas headed by Garga Muni also wept.
