with mainly intellectual dis-

abilities.
There are many resources in
Carroll County that serve indi-
viduals with intellectual and
developmental disabilities,
but no program specifically
designed for individuals on
the autism spectrum, ages 18
and up. The Arc has created a
suitable place for these indi-
viduals to have a sense of
belonging and companionship
as well as providing an appro-
priate structured transition
into society. Our program
includes job placement assis-
tance, social groups, relation-
ships 101, and drama classes.
Our goal is to establish a
unique pilot program that is
part of a new movement that
is bringing community in-
volvement to adults with au-
tism.
Welcome to the first volume
and issue of The Arc Carroll
Countys adult autism news-
letter, Autism in Motion. Our
clever acronym sums us up:
AIM. We want you each to aim
with us as we embark on this
new journey using creative
modalities that bring sociali-
zation and collaboration to
adults on the spectrum.
At The Arc Carroll County, we
have created classes that will
prepare adults to integrate
into the community more
smoothly and effectively. It
has been our experience that
once adults on the autism
spectrum turn 21, they transi-
tion out of the public school
system and are forced to
abruptly integrate into soci-
ety, with great difficulty.

Many adult service providers
combine adults with autism
with adults with intellectual
and/or developmental dis-
abilities without recognizing
important differences in
terms of therapeutic ap-
proach. In most cases, we
have found this practice to
fall short of Best Practices
because many individuals that
present with classic autism
have differing sensory, social
and behavioral needs, and
have additional support re-
quirements than individuals
Since our classes do not start
until after Labor Day, what
have we been up to?! Glad
you asked! We are building
bridges within local busi-
nesses and the community.
We have sent countless bro-
chures, emails, and fliers to
those in and around the Car-
roll County area. The Assis-
tant Director of Autism Ser-
vices, Britt Burr, has attended
and will be continuing to at-
tend numerous networking
events to further spread the
word of this wonderful pro-
gram. We have partnered
with McDaniel College and
Carroll Community College
providing internships and ser-
vice-learning opportunities
for college students inter-
ested in working in the autism
field. Furthermore, the Adult
Autism Program has already
begun evening activities:
Social Club (last Thursday of
every month) and the Autism
Education Group (first Monday
of every month).

Social Club
On the last Thursday of
every month, adults with
autism participate in a so-
cial activity of their choos-
ing. This is an opportunity
for individuals on the spec-
trum to develop a rapport
with one another and to
strengthen bonds between
the classes to which they
are involved.
Attendees at the Ice Cream
Social in June expressed
interest in getting off-site
for the next event to go
bowling. Well, a month
later in July, guess what we
did? Bowling! And boy were
they good! We had a total
of eight new folks come out
to the lanes to show off
their striking skills!
AND...our next Social Club
is already planned and
booked! We will be at
Meltdown Ceramics on 25
East Main Street in West-
minster, MD on Thursday,
August 28th from 6:30-8pm.

A common misconception
among the autism community is
that those on the spectrum
want to be left alone. This is
not necessarily the case. Often-
times those with autism desire
the same social interactions as
everyone else, but it is the ac-
tual fear of initiating and fear
of an unknown situation that

The Arc Carroll County was founded in 1955 by a
small group of parents of children with
developmental disabilities. At that time, these
children were excluded from public education and
there were no structured social, recreational or
educational activities.
This group of parents was committed to forming a
community-based system to provide necessary
services for their children. That first year special
education programs were established in the
basement of the Davis Library on Main Street in
Westminster and in the Mount Airy American Legion.
Since that time, The Arc has advocated for and
worked to provide support to people with
developmental disabilities and their families. Today
The Arc is one of Carroll Countys largest non-profit
organizations serving nearly 700 adults and children
with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
