Aspiring Sports Marketing Professional with a degree in Recreation and leisure with a
concentration in Sports Marketing. Future Masters program graduate in Sports
Management at Shepherd University. I wish to pursue a long term marketing job with the
Under Armour Company following my summer internship as a Lacrosse Marketing

Communication skills, Comprehensive leadership skills, Works well independently, Skills
in dealing with the public, and a Motivated Team player.

Explanation:
I chose to include a simple introduction of myself and what I aspire to achieve when I get
out of college because it shows the employer that I am still in school, and plan on achieving
higher education after graduation. I also included my summer internship as a lacrosse
marketing recruit to show that I am pursuing a potential career related to my major, Sports
Marketing but also have my options open for a long term marketing job. Lastly, I
included my set of skills and qualifications to ensure that I am a reliable person and
well-motivated. Although, the employer cannot determine right away if these are a correct
actualization of myself, but it will give them something to look for while being employed.

Career Professionalism

1. Description of two organizations you should be a part of
What do they offer?
How can they benefit you?

The first organization that I should be a part of in my future in order to become
successful is the National Sports Marketing Network (NSMN). This organization has a
career service that has: Free job matching between members, listings of industry jobs,
one-on-one career workshops for personalized job advice and resume review,
one-on-one twitter workshops for beginner or advanced help, and recommendations of
sports industry job recruiters. This organizations website also has options where you
can submit your resume and they will help you find a job through their job matching
clients. Lastly, from looking at their website you can have a private 30 minute call with
an executive director and discuss topics such as: job searches, salary negotiations,
elevator pitch, cover letters, and job relocations. This organization can benefit me in
many of ways coming directly out of college. It will give me the opportunity to
possibly put my but in the door and start off with a job with a well-known company that
satisfies my interest such as: US Lacrosse, New Jersey devils, and Los Angeles
Dodgers, all listed on their website.
http://sportsmarketingnetwork.com/
The second organization that I should be a part of is the North American Society for
Sports Management (NASSM). This organization offers things such as conferences,
career services, a world association for sports management, journals of sports
management, and also sports management educational journals. This organization can
benefit me because it gives you the option to explore the different options for

5

universities in different countries that offer sports management programs for possible
graduate programs such as: Canada, Europe, Australia, India, Africa, and Asia. Also,
similar to the NSMN, NASSM provides job postings and other career services through
partnerships. This will also give me the opportunity to get my name out there and
potentially land a career.
http://www.nassm.com/
2. Description of four conferences you could attend
What is the focus?
How would they benefit individuals working in your industry

Sports Marketing Association (SMA): This conferences focus is to lead in the
development and expansion of the body of knowledge in sports marketing, wants to
impact future development within the academic discipline and the field of sports
marketing, and provides forums for professional interactions among practitioners,
academicians, and students This conference can benefit individuals working in the
sports marketing industry because it offers a connection between professionals and
students and the opportunity to gain more knowledge about marketing.

http://sportmarketingassociation.net/conference/2014Conference/

Maryland Recreation and Parks Association (MRPA): This is a conversance
held in Ocean City Maryland and its focus is for students to be able to meet
recreation and parks professionals and you can network with administrators,
directors, and superintendents, therapeutic recreation professionals and much
more. This is a wide based conference that anyone in the recreational department
can benefit from.

6

http://www.mrpanet.org/conference.html

Sports Events Marketing Experience (SEME): This conferences focus is for the
attendees to have an intimate experience with those people in positions in which
one day you see yourself. They want you to come with a career goal in mind so
they can help you achieve it in your future. This conference will help people in
sports marketing for the obvious reasons, to succeed, and get a successful career.

http://www.seme-now.com/index.php

AAHPERD National Convention and Expo: This is a conference help in St.
Louis Missouri coming soon, April 1-5 and they host a theme Gateway to
success. Their focus is to advance professional practice and promote research
related to health and physical education. This conference would benefit people in
my area of study, sports marketing because they can offer career possibilities and
also internships.

3. Four journals/magazines you should subscribe to

International Journal of Sports Marketing and Management: This is a
journal that covers topics such as: Sports technology, strategic
management, sports marketing, and human resource development and
management. The benefits that come along with this journal it can serve as a
practice in the area of sports management and marketing. I chose this

7

because I know I have a lot more to learn about both topics before I continue
my career and this would help me excel in these topics.
http://www.inderscience.com/jhome.php?jcode=ijsmm
International Journal of Sports Marketing & Sponsorships: This
journal is more towards the aim of informational as it publishes peer
reviewed research, case studies, comments and interviews from academics
and industry experts. The benefits that come along with this journal are that
it has a wide range of topic discussed in it. For example the topics range
from The complementarity factor in the leveraging of sponsorship to I
want to buy more because I feel good: The effect of sports induced emotion
on sponsorships. Although, all the topics are about sponsorships and sports
marketing, the topics within the broader subject is narrowed down. I
selected it mainly for the sports marketing and sponsorship information it
will be able to offer me.
http://www.imrpublications.com/journal-landing.aspx?volno=L&no=L
ADWEEK: Sports Marketing 2013 (2014): I chose this magazine
because its current, up to date and has information that I will be potentially
interested in. This magazine offers a very different look at marketing with
topics such as: The social sides of sponsorships, helping brands go for gold, and
other large sporting news. The benefits that I can achieve from subscribing to
this magazine is to get a larger outlook on sports marketing and instead of
looking at definitions and theorys that they teach you in school and other
journals, you see it happening in real life.
http://www.adweek.com/sa-section/sports-marketing-2012

8

The Sports Marketing Quarterly (SMQ): This journal serves as an
outlet for the dissemination of sports marketing information for both
practicing professionals and academicians. I chose this journal because it
is targeted to me still being learning about sports marketing. Also because
there will always be new knowledge in this magazine being that there will
be new submissions with new knowledge or people commenting on existing
theories or terms.

Interview:
Persons Name: Jonathan Thayil
Contact Information: JTHAYIL@Shepherd.edu
Company/Agency: Shepherd University
Job Title: Head Women and Mens Soccer Coach
1. What do you look for in a player?
I look for a lot of things, and overall it has to be a good fit for our team. They can be
really skillful, but if their attitude is poor, then I dont want them. If they have a
great attitude and work ethic, but just arent skillful enough then I probably wont
keep them, even though I may want to. Most of the players we find are relatively
skillful, and have great attitudes and a great work ethic. Other things I look for are
athleticism, vision of the game, mental toughness, competitiveness, strength,
quickness (more so over 5 yards than 50 yards), honesty, and commitment. Of
course I always look for leadership ability, that is a bonus if they have it, but not a
huge negative if they dont because typically we can develop some of that. The last
is drive, to be better at school and soccer, to want to work to get better and never
settle.

16

2. What skills and knowledge have you gain from coaching? Is there a difference in
the set of skills or knowledge you have developed coaching the mens team, rather
than the womens team?
I have learned so much from coaching. The knowledge I have learned is vast, there
is so much to learn about the game, about players, about tactics, about managing
people. You can never learn everything, good coaches continue to learn their whole
life, and always look for opportunities to learn more about subjects that they dont
know a lot about. I have learned quite a bit about people, what makes them tick,
how to pull a bit more out of them on the field, and why they will do certain things;
or why they wont. I have learned how to be more organized, especially with long
term planning, and I have really developed the skill to analyze and observe games,
and then pick them apart for useful information that I can use for my teams. I have
also learned great life lessons about caring for others, the perspective of the game in
relation to life, and how players have changed in the almost 20 years that I have
been coaching collegiate soccer. I dont think that there is a different skill set or
knowledge between the men and the women, other than biological differences that
you have to keep in mind for both training and management of the players. I do
think that there is a huge difference in the way that you apply the skills and
knowledge of coaching between men and women, the application and how you use
those skills is very important.
3. What lessons do you try and teach your players that they can take off the field?
It is my goal to help players learn as much as they can about soccer, but I also try to
incorporate life lessons in to soccer. Some of the more specific lesson have to do

17

with leaving things better than you found them; whether that be a sideline, or a
soccer program after you graduate. I try and teach the value of learning and reading,
the value of commitment, and the importance of communication. I hope to help
players see that doing the right thing is not the easiest thing to do, but it is required
of adults. I try to promote honesty, integrity, and competitiveness is everything that
they teams do.
4. What is your biggest strength and weakness in coaching?
I think that if you ask my players you would get different answers than I would give
you. I think my greatest strength is my ability to be creative with training ideas, and
coaching concepts in training. I also feel that I am a very good tactical coach in
games, in regards to how we play, and what changes we make to maximize our
position in any game. I think my greatest weakness is that I expect everyone to have
the same passion for the game that I do, I expect them to have the same
commitment that I do, and they rarely do. I have coached maybe 6-7 players in 18
years that have the same level of passion for the sport that I do. When this
disconnect happens, I constantly have to remind myself that they are not me, and I
try not to get too frustrated.
5. Do you find it difficult to balance your time between your personal life and soccer?
It is incredibly difficult at times to balance personal life and soccer. During the
season is the toughest, as I work 16-18 hours per day on the average, sometimes
more. I am gone for away trips, and rarely home to see my family for 12 weeks. The
off season has tons of recruiting duties, and the spring can be very hectic because it
is so compressed. I am very lucky to have a wife that fully supports my passion for

18

coaching, and is basically an incredible single parent for 4-5 months out of every
year. My children understand that there are times of the year that they wont see me
much at all, and other times of the year that they will see me every day. I love what
I do, and I look forward to coming to work every day...however, spending more
time with friends and family would be great.
6. Describe some of the experiences you have had with the womens soccer team.
I have had some great experiences with the womens soccer team. The relationships
that I have developed with some of the players over the last 3 years are ones that I
will cherish forever. Some players think that I dont like them because I dont play
them, but nothing could be farther from the truth. I am saddened that some players
that dont play a lot think that I dont like them as a person. Some of the memorable
experiences have been all three conference tournaments, camping trips, some great
close games that we either won in dramatic fashion, or lost while fighting so hard to
get back in the game. My best memories though are the informal times just hanging
out in the office, on the bus, or in the lobby of the hotel, telling stories and just
sharing conversation; the games are icing on the cake.

I found this formal performance appraisal evaluation form because I am interested
in coaching and scouting, sports marketing and this form will let you know a lot about
potential employees regardless of what job position you are interested in. This could be
used when looking for an assistant coach or someone that will want to work with the team
year round. The parts with attitude, safety, organizational skills, and attendance and will
correlate with coaching. I added a few things that I thought is important and can be more
directed towards the job of coaching in parenthesis.
