FOOTBALL TALK
FOLLOWING TARPORLEY VICS F.C.
March has been a month of
“Highs and Lows” for Tarporley
Vics players, management and
supporters. On a positive front, the
First Team travelled to runaway
Cheshire League Leaders F.C.
United of Manchester Reserves
and returned victorious after an
excellent 1-0 win.
F.C. United of Manchester, for those of you who don’t
follow Football, are a Football Club that were set
up in the wake of the Malcolm Glazer take over of
Manchester United in 2005, and the Fans wish to “Take
Football back from corporate ownership”. F.C. United’s
First Team have gates of over 2,000 fans while they try
to move up the Leagues, and the Club can draw upon
a massive player base within Greater Manchester and
beyond. With this in mind the victory by Tarporley
Vics was a remarkable win, and the squad travelled
back to Tarporley in high spirits.
The following week, the players were brought
back down to earth with a bump, after the worst
performance of the season saw the first Team lose 2-1
to Highfield Athletic Reserves in the Chester & District
Challenge Cup -Semi Final.

Hopes of a Christleton Final to add glory to what
has been a successful Season were dashed when the
majority of the Vics players performed well below par,
and gifted Victory to a lower League side after extra
time at Tattenhall.
The first Team will need to rediscover the form of
previous weeks if they are to claim a “Top Six” position
in the League, although this will not be easy with
tough fixtures remaining in the closing weeks of the
Season, with the highlight being the visit of F.C. United
on March 29th. A Double over the Manchester Club
will be the minimum required from the players after
the disappointment of the Cup upset.
The Reserves continue to have an excellent first
Season in adult Football, and have recently enjoyed
a “Won two, drawn one and lost one” record. The
highlight of these games have been that they have
managed to cope with the loss of key players, who
have enjoyed “Call-ups” to the First Team squad, and
the introduction of new young players such as Tom
Oliphant & Sam Lloyd.

THE TARPORLEY PARISH
COUNCIL PAGE
The Infrastructure Working Group
of Tarporley Parish Council held its
inaugural meeting on 28 February
2006. In attendance were Heidi
Nickson, Chairman, Councillors Gill
Clough, Tom Spark, Ken Parker
James Blackford and Ernest Boynes.
It was agreed that initially their areas of particular
interest would be Transport and Highways, the PCSO,
Security, Community bus services, Commerce and the
Christmas Lights Celebration/Festival.
There was a survey of the history of these topics and
suggestions as to how to find solutions to problems
where required. Councillor Nickson would pursue
ongoing matters with regard to Transport and
Highways, contacting the Clerk and local authorities
to determine how outstanding concerns could be
addressed.
Councillor Parker will make contact with the PCSO
to arrange a date for the next Community Action
Meeting and with the Cheshire Constabulary

Homewatch liaison officer to set about reinvigorating
the Homewatch system in Tarporley. Councillors
Boynes and Sparks will investigate the current
situation with regard to the community bus service,
currently subsidised from the parish council precept
and, in consultation with adjacent parish councils
determine whether or not the service could be
usefully expanded. Councillor Clough will contact
local businesses to see if given assistance from the
parish council, perhaps in administration, the Business
Association could be made more effective.
Respondents to the Parish Plan survey revealed that
there is a desire for a Farmers/Country Markets.
Councillor Clough will make enquiries of the various
market organisations.
It was believed that the celebration of the Christmas
lights could be improved. This will need to be a project
in which community organisations should play an
important part. The whole IWG with the assistance of
the Clerk will join others outside the parish council to
make this an entertaining event.

Carbon
Home
The Chancellor of the Exchequer has reaffirmed the government’s
commitment that all new homes from 2018 will have to be zero carbon.
So what exactly does this mean and how will it affect our new homes
in the future?

Your Carbon Footprint
Every time you switch on an electrical appliance, or
heat your home with gas or oil, you are adding more
CO2 into the atmosphere contributing to global
warming. The table below shows how much CO2 each
type of fuel contributes to the atmosphere:

Take your utility bills from last year and - get your
children as home work - calculate how many tonnes of
CO2 your household produced. You might be surprised
at the result!
So how do I make my house Zero Carbon?
It’s not easy. You would have to change your heating
system from Oil or Gas to a carbon neutral system.
This would either be wood (Biomass), or an electric
system with the electricity produced from either a
wind turbine, CHP (combined heat & power), or solar
panels. Unfortunately, this is where the argument
also falls down. Even if you had both a wind turbine
and solar panels on the roof, there are still going
to be cloudy days on which you will need to draw
power from the grid. The government intends to get
around this by a process call ‘Offsetting’. Offsetting
means that the total power you generate in a year is
equivalent to the power that you use. Some of this
power will be exported to the electricity network
(especially at night), but effectively you are neutral.
So what about my green electricity tariff?
It’s not as green as you think. Up to 70% of the power
generated by a wind turbine or hydroelectric plant is
lost in the cables between the turbine and your house.
The electricity is made up to 240V from dirty sources
such as oil, gas, and coal to make up the difference..
Is it worth me doing anything at all?
Yes, there are several things you can do in your
house to raise your efficiency and lower your carbon
footprint and energy costs. Some have very low
pay-back periods, others are more costly, but all of
them will reduce your CO2 output and thus help the
environment.

Cannon of
Spring Lamb

Ingredients: Method - Lamb:

500 gram Lamb cannon
1 strip of rosemary
Sea salt and cracked black pepper
1 teaspoon of redcurrant jelly
25 grams fresh redcurrants
1. Lightly season the lamb place in a hot frying pan with a drop
of olive oil.
2. Seal the meat and roast in the oven at 185 – 190 for 9 – 10
minutes (pink meat)
3. When cooked remove from the oven and leave to rest for 5
minutes

In the GARDEN
April sees a month of unpredictable
weather with sun and showers. This
can delay the coming of spring, but
never stops the surge of new growth
entirely.
Garden birds will be in the middle of the breeding
season, along with the summer migrants returning
from the African continent to breed.
Do not let weeds reach seeding stage. Start weeding
early and before the herbaceous perennials get too
large. When areas are cleared consider a mulch of bark
chippings.
Continue to sow seeds of summer bedding plants.
Prick out and pot up young seedlings and cuttings
before they become overcrowded.
As soon as soil and weather conditions permit, sow
broad beans and early varieties of garden peas. Sow
small quantities of early carrot seed such as ‘’Early
Nantes’’ if the soil is suitable.
Start hardening-off bedding plants - protect from frost
in a frost-free greenhouse or cold frame. Ventilate
greenhouses and put on cool-glass shading to prevent
young plants being scorched.
Control slugs and snails with pellets or slug bait!

Gladioli can be planted in mid April to avoid late
frosts. Plant 8cm (3’’) deep, as this will help to anchor
top-heavy plants, which will require staking. If the soil
is heavy or clay, put sand below corms to prevent rot.
Prune spring-flowering shrubs after they have finished
flowering and feed them with a balanced fertiliser. Re-
pot foliage house plants if they are pot-bound.
As feeding will have leached out of patio containers
with roses or other shrubs in them, apply a slow-
release fertiliser as a surface dressing and this will last
throughout the season.
Use lawn sand to kill the moss and feed the grass in
your lawn. (When the moss is dead, scarify the lawn
using a spring tine rake or a power scarifier.)
Plant up your hanging baskets and keep them frost-
free in the greenhouse. You should aim to have your
basket ready to hang up at the end of May.
You will be busy with sowing, potting, and pruning,
but it is also a time of year when insect pests become
active. So make quite sure that you are just as active
with your spraying and fumigating. Many jobs in
the garden, like pruning roses, depend very much on
locality. April is a very busy month.

you are Sprung!
Nobody enjoys a ‘to do’ list.
Nobody wants to spend their
entire weekend re-roofing a house
or fixing the kitchen sink. So the
tendency is to let these projects go,
put them off, procrastinate.
There’s always that age-old philosophy: there’s
nothing to do today that can’t wait until tomorrow.
And it’s not because you’re lazy, but more because of
the exact opposite; in this busy day and age our to-do
lists always ‘runneth’ over.
However, these are necessary chores that have to
be taken care of right away. It’s a responsibility that
comes with owning a house. Don’t think of this advice
as a guilt-trip, but instead a firm warning for the
future. The problem won’t just go away. And the more
you sit on home repairs, the worse these problems
are going to get. And this means that more time and
money will eventually have to be spent to put right
what was once a quick and affordable fix.
Excuses, Excuses, Excuses
There are several reasons we put off home repairs, but
try not to let these excuses get in the way. Here are
some common ways we postpone the inevitable and
some additional tips about how to get around these
rationalizations...
“It’s Not a Big Deal!”
Yes, it is and you know it. It’s easy to be forced into
fixing your home. Believe it, when your boiler breaks
down and you are unable to enjoy a lovely bath, you’ll
be calling someone in to fix it pronto. But don’t let

“I didn’t know it was broken!”

inspect your house to make sure things are running
well, and if you don’t know what to look for then hire
a trained inspector to look things over. Prevention is
the best solution. ‘Home repair’ doesn’t just refer to
things that are broken; it also means keeping things in
proper working order. No machine, device, or structure
runs forever. For instance, you have to take your car in
for oil changes every few months. You have to rotate
your tires every so often. Well, the same goes for your
house: continual maintenance is key to sustaining an
efficient household.

Of course you don’t. Not all of us are trained
craftsmen, and sometimes the simplest chores end
up being the most complicated. That’s why how-to
manuals exist. If you don’t have time to read the
instructions, then ask a friend or family member with
some know-how to help you out (and don’t forget to
buy them a pizza afterwards). Or if you don’t want to
impose on anyone, that is why the professionals exist.

makes the list, these days, the
fastest growing reason is for

The Spa at Portal is the ultimate in luxury. Set in
a sublimely beautiful setting within minutes of
Tarporley, pure indulgence is the order of the day.
You can relax in this supremely tranquil environment
whilst enjoying precious time to revive mind, body
and soul.
The Spa first opened late 2007 and Joanna and I
were extremely pleased to be invited to try out the
facilities. We arrived bright and early one Friday
morning and were really looking forward to seriously

de-stressing! We had booked the first hour for two
treatments, a massage for myself and a facial for
Joanna.
Upon arrival, we were immediately impressed with
how welcoming the staff were, and how comfortable
they made us feel. While Jo went off to the Tranquility
Room (more about that later!) I went to one of their
eight treatment rooms for my fantastic massage.
The candlelit room set the perfect atmosphere and
moments later I could feel myself unwinding; muscles
feeling less ‘knotted’. I felt so relaxed I could have
fallen asleep!
Half an hour later Jo and I had swapped places and
I was even more impressed! The Tranquility Room
is something else... a lovely, cosy, place to relax and
unwind in comfort on wonderful lounge chairs. My
eyes and ears took in the soft candle light, soft music
and central water feature - definitely the place to
recharge your energy. I was handed a refreshing chilled
fruit juice and the latest copy of Vogue magazine, and
I was in my element.

Jo really enjoyed her facial and loved the Decleor
products that were used. She commented that the
product was perfect for her sensitive skin, smelled
absolutely wonderful and was impressed that
the range was 100% pure, 100% natural, 100%

complimentary slippers, unlimited use of the Spa area
(including the Relaxation Suite/Tranquility Room as
above), swimming pool, thermal suite, experience
showers and Technogym fitness suite.
The Thermal Suite includes an Ice Room, Steam Room
and Aroma Steam Room, Rock Sauna and Infra Red
Sauna, Experience Shower and pool. Jo and I tried all
of these and whilst we really enjoyed everything, we
particularly fell for the contrasts of the Steam Room
and Ice Room.

greatest gift is an unforgettable experience. We all
know nearest and dearest who would love a day at
the Spa with a treatment thrown in - a massage, a

The 2008 Arley Horse Trials are
now just around the corner, and to
celebrate we’ve got two pairs of
tickets to give away.
This hugely popular Pre-Novice/Novice event, which
attracts over 400 competitors, is being held on May 17
and 18, 2008.
Competitors will be put to the test in three Eventing
disciplines – dressage, showjumping and cross country
– with the cross country course designed by eventing
guru Richard Carruthers, and including The Pre Novice
Regional Finals.
With the course sitting at the heart of the magnificent
Arley Estate in Cheshire both riders and spectators
alike will be able to take in the stunning surroundings,
including the glorious gardens and the famous Hall.
Adding to the excitement of the Horse Trials, the Arley
Country Fair also takes place during the weekend –
attracting thousands of visitors and creating a real
buzz around the course and showground.
As well as a programme packed with thrilling
equestrian action, the Arley Country Fair will feature
a host of other attractions from falconry, archery
and medieval jousting to quality traders and a food
marquee.

DOWN TO A FINE ART
Down to a Fine Art is a rural gallery in Stretton,
Chester. It is the brainchild of partners Chris Morris
and Jaine Briscoe-Price, who have achieved a rare
balance of showcasing exciting, local art with
approachability and lack of pretension.
Their ethos is that you don’t have to “understand” art,
you just need to know that you’re welcome!
Original art is displayed all year long, interspersed with
themed and solo exhibitions on the first Thursday of
each month. Bespoke reproductions are available too.
Simply look through each artist’s portfolio, and [1] select
your image, [2] choose your preferred medium, and [3]
decide on a size and frame which is then produced in-
house to the highest of standards.
Down to a Fine Art is open Tuesday – Saturday 10-
6pm, Sunday 10-4pm, Thursday to 8pm.
