One Fest Is Coming
One Fest is a single day multi-cultural festival located
just south of Kaslo, celebrating our community and its
creativity. Taking place all day on Saturday, August 23 at
Underbelly Farm on the Back Road, Kaslo, One Fest is
created entirely from selfess contributions. Tere will be
a diverse lineup of talented music artists from across the
Central Kootenay; plus a variety of workshops on cook-
ing, homesteading topics, the body, and more; as well as
childrens activities, guest speakers and a stone soup com-
munity dinner (bring a bowl and spoon). Entry for One
Fest will be $25 to $45 (sliding scale), $15 for ages 13 to
16, and free for 12 and under, with all proceeds invested
into community resources (support for local farmers,
building community venues, and more).

umbia Basin Culture Tour allows you to explore artists

locked salmon as well as enjoy a Sunday in the park. Rea-
soner says people and fsh arent the only ones attending
the event. Te occasional bear shows up as well. So
please, leave the dogs at home, he cautions.

Here they come again! Its time to celebrate the annual
return of the Kokanee salmon at Kokanee Creek Park on
Sunday, August 24. Get ready for channel spawning tours,
dance, food and fun, along with a local art exhibit from
11 am to 6 pm at the Visitors Centre.
Tis is the third annual RedFish Festival presented by
the West Kootenay EcoSociety. Guided channel tours run
hourly throughout the day, so residents and camper can

Streetcar#23
Back by popular demand the Haunted Heritage Tour
Streetcar#23 returns for a special summer engagement.
On August 29, 30 and 31 people are invited to enjoy a
guided tour of Nelsons paranormal side from the safe-
ty of the Nelson Electric Tramway Societys (NETS) 108
year old trolley Streetcar #23. Te Haunted Heritage Tour
Streetcar#23 will take people on an hour long adventure
on Nelsons waterfront, flled with stories about para-
normal investigations, tales of intrigue, and a look into
the haunted history of the Kootenays. Te tour begins in
Lakeside Park with an introduction to the world of the
paranormal and why Nelson is a hot bed for ghostly activ-
ity. You will then be treated to a variety of stories and frst
hand adventures with Nelson Paranormal League (NPL)
founder and trolley driver Chris Holland.
Admission is $8 per person; the tour begins at 5:30 pm
August 29, 30 and 31, loading at Lakeside Park Station.
Tickets are available at the Nelson and District Chamber
of Commerce and are destined to sell out quickly. For

Keep Te Beat 2014
Keep the Beat is back! Join us at Lakeside Park this
year on Saturday, August 23 for a day of local talent in
a family friendly environment. Enjoy this one-of-a-kind
event brought to you by Nelsons students of LVR, with
proceeds going to War Child; an independent humanitar-
ian organization that works to help children afected by
armed confict. Te event will run from 10 am to 10 pm
with musical and dancing acts, as well as a kids tent with
a wide range of activities for children.
Humans Of Nelson
Leaps From Screen To Book
What began as an experiment is about to become a
book. Humans of Nelson, a project that has been charm-
ing legions of followers through web and Facebook pages,
will make the leap to the printed page this fall. A kick-
starter campaign to get the ball rolling launches August 8.
Te project has come a long way since photographer Ryan
Oakley took the frst shot, on his lunch break from his job
as an engineer with the Ministry of Transportation. My
heart was pounding, says Oakley. I was thinking: dont
do it! Youll embarrass yourself! And then I thought: what
have I got to lose? Te very frst person said no. But the
next one said yes, and Humans of Nelson was born. Tere
are now 220+ captivating images of Nelson folk on the
website, www.humansofnelsonbc.ca and the Facebook
page (facebook.com/humansofnelsonbc) has been em-
braced with a whopping 5, 786 likes.
Oakley was inspired by the Humans of New York pro-
ject by photographer Brandon Stanton, which in turn
has inspired spinofs in major cities like Amsterdam
and Paris. Nelson, thought Oakley, deserved to be in
their company. Oakley looks for interesting, approach-
able-looking people to photograph and conducts friendly
mini-interviews. Te results are sometimes telling, ofen
charming commentaries that complement images of
people of all ages and from all walks of Nelson life, and
even a few dogs.
A book just seemed the next logical step, explains
Oakley. Tere is something about having a book in
your hands. And when its a book about the people in
your townthe interesting, the of-beat, and the regular
folksI think its an opportunity to celebrate what it is that
makes Nelson...Nelson. Oakley is launching a kickstart-
er campaign to fund the publishing project, a full colour
hardcover photograph book designed by Nelsons Steven
Cretney of Te Forest Design. Anne DeGrace, publisher
of the photographic cofee table book Nelson, British Col-
umbia, is assisting with the project.Its a great team, says
Oakley. Te book will be beautiful, and a dream come
true. Contributors to the campaign will receive a signed
copy of the book, as well as other rewards based on the
level of contribution. Te goal is to raise $10,000 by Au-
gust 23. $1 for every book sold through the campaign will
beneft local charities. Te book will launch this fall in a
multimedia event at the Nelson Civic Teatre.

Using the most modern tools available, the Selkirk
Geospatial Research Centre (SGRC) has helped restore
a hallowed historical site in Ootischenia. As part of the
Ootischenia Doukhobor Cemeterys two-year restora-
tion project, the Selkirk College-based research centre
was contacted earlier this year to help with the tricky task
of ensuring grave markers were returned to the proper
resting place afer signifcant landscaping was completed.
Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technol-
ogy, a pair of Selkirk College co-op students completed
the important project last month.
