I hope you are not discouraged at recent news that has tarnished Chinatown and our community.
The Chinese Culture Foundation remains optimistic there is another vision of Chinatown as a
place that imagines art, challenges stereotypes and nurtures philanthropy. We are a transforma-
tional community at the intersection of art, education, philanthropy and community service.
Visit Chinatown now and see three new outdoor murals on Wentworth Alley and Walter U Lum
Place. These murals are just the beginning of our efforts to foster dialogue and to transform
Chinatown into a public art space that celebrates diversity and innovation. Participate in our new
Art Walk and be inspired by Chinatowns evolving identity through the lens of art!
We are encouraged by the enthusiasm of the youth being mentored by artist-in-residence Xu
Tan, an international artist highly regarded for his interactive style of art making. He is leading
local teens to create art that is trans-disciplinary and cross generational. Please visit our pop-up
studio on Ross Alley to witness the making of Keywords and discover an old neighborhood with
a new vision.
This summer, get ready for Summer Lees trailblazing exhibit at the CCC and Yerba Buena Center
for the Arts galleries. Sign up for our inaugural Mandarin Summer Camp, and celebrate our big-

Culture Foundation through the participation of their executives
and generous sponsorship. The Chinese Culture Foundation
(CCF) recently had a conversation with Mario Diaz, Vice Presi-
dent of the Wells Fargo Foundation, and Maggie Mui, Senior Vice
President and Director of Diverse Segments for Wells Fargo.
Q: How important is it for Wells Fargo to support the
Chinese community?
Mario: The Chinese Community is one of the many
diverse pillars that sustain and support San Francisco.
The Chinese Culture Center is a vibrant part of the San
Francisco community and we have a rich history together.
Wells Fargo values the Chinese Communitys contribu-
tions over the long term--from the gold rush era to the
present day.
Q: Which is your favorite program?
Mario: Choosing a favorite program is difcult as all the
programs you offer the community are worthy. If I had to
choose, it would be educational programs for youth. The experience of discovery
is always enlightening. To see children focused on painting, drawing, and reading
can only be a positive experience for them.
Q: You have made your mark in mentoring young profes-
sionals and strengthening CCCs visibility. What moti-
vates you to volunteer on the board?
Maggie: Thank you for your leadership in creating so
many meaningful programs to benet Chinatown and
the greater Bay Area. The Center creates a sense
of wonder and changes people lives through art and
cultural education. I am honored to be on the board and
inspired by all of you.
Q: How does the art inspire?
Maggie: CCC has the reputation of creating innovative
projects that are high impact. One of our artists, Hou
YuMei, a non-English speaking woman from Manchuria, won the national compe-
tition to design the Central Subway Landmark Art. Justin Hoover, Jin Feng and
Gold Mountain Society created three public art murals transforming Chinatowns
alleyways into a museum without walls.

Justice Investors(JI), owner of the Hilton Hotel Financial
District, California College (CCA) for the Arts and the
Chinese Culture Foundation are collaborating to create
innovative new art to enliven the bridge.
We would like to recognize Gloria Yim Jew and all the
talented students at CCA for coming up with the design
concept to activate the space. We are grateful to Geoff
Palermo of JI for sponsoring the design projects. China-
town residents and visitors will soon enjoy a beautiful new
exhibition on the pedestrian bridge-part of our goal of
fostering Chinatown as an art museum without walls!

work to protect habitat of the Black Neck Crane in China. The talk will

woman in the environmental eld.

Him Mark Lai pioneered the study of Chinese American history.
Along with his wife Laura, he documented not only what happened
to Chinese Americans, but also gave voice to their experiences and
what they did to resist, thrive, and contribute to America. The Him
Mark Lai Learning Center continues this powerful legacy by mak-
ing Chinese American history relevant to new generations, and by
encouraging engagement with critical issues today.

As CCCs Xian Rui artist of 2014, Summer Lee will debut in two locations in July. This collabora-
tive solo embodies both the artists creative process, as well as the fresh presentation approach
that echoes the geographical and psychological proximity depicted by her work.

This is the internationally renowned artists seventh experiment following China, Holland,
Sweden and the Venice Biennale in Italy. Together with youth participants from Chinatown
Community Development Center, they search for and decode the keywords of our lives.
