One day the vowels a, e, i, o, and u, went for a walk. Suddenly, it started to rain. The letter u always carried his umbrella, since it starts with his /u/ sound, so he did not get wet. The other vowels asked if they could get under the umbrella, too. You may get under my umbrella, said the letter u, If you will promise to say my /u/ sound. The other vowels were happy with their own sounds, /a/, /e/, / i/,and /o/, and didnt want to give them up. But soon it began to rain even harder. We want to keep our own sounds, but please, let us get under your umbrella, said a, e, i, and o to the letter u. So the letter u said, If you will say my sound at least some of the time, then you can get under my umbrella. So a, e, i, and o got under the um- brella, and that is why, to this very day, sometimes they say the /u/ sound, instead of their regular sound.
