HELPFUL POST Michael560 Nov 11, 2010 at 3:37 AM
Found this solution. Haven't tried it myself as I haven't yet run into this problem, but it sounds like they had
some success with it.

Try this.....I have seen it work on machines upgraded or coming into a previous 32bit environment. Try this
on the machine sharing the printer.
1) Share Permissions
1. On explorer, go to C:\windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS
2. Right click, Properties
3. Sharing tab
4. Advanced Sharing
5. Check "Share this folder"
6. Permissions
7. Grant everyone Full Control
2) NTFS Permissions
1. On explorer, go to C:\windows\system32\spool\printers
2. Right click, Properties
3. Security tab
4. Edit
5. Add
6. Advanced
7. Find Now 8. Choose "NETWORK"
9. OK
10. Grant Network full control.
You may also need this last step.
1. Go to "Printers"
2. click "Add Printer"
3. "Add a Local Printer"
4. "Create a New Port"
5. use the "Local Port" option
6. at "Enter a Port Name" enter: "\\Computername\Printername"

I have a printer (Zebra TLP2844) physically installed and shared on a Windows 7 Ultimate PC.. I am trying to add this printer on another Windows 7 PC but cannot..
When I try to add it as a network printer I get the error attached.. I successfully added this printer on a Windows XP machine and a Windows 2000 machine with no problems..
Any ideas why I can't add it on this Windows 7 machine? I don't even get to any point where it asks for drivers.. It immediately goes to the attached error.
Thanks

This has worked for me on similar issues.
in the windows 7 search box type print management or
%systemroot%\system32\printmanagement.msc
it should find print managment
launch it
under print server>local machinde> drivers
remove any zebra drivers or questionable drivers by right clicking and selecting remove package.
then try re-installing the printer

I cannot comment on the above comments since I haven't tried them, but I've had this in the environment
here since going to Windows 7, and some machines could click print, but it would go into some local print
queue. Since making the change in the registry, I've had zero problems. Full details in this MS support
document:

Ok so using Michael's link I was able to get the printer added and I don't get the error message anymore..
Now my issue is it just doesn't print from the client.. I see the job spool temporarily and on the server I see
the files get added to the spooler directory but it never prints..
You see what I mean in the screenshot.. The files are still in the spool directory (it's been over 10 minutes)
but the job doesn't show in the print queue..
I've also tried Jay's suggestion with the permissions.
Any ideas?

Yep, try mine. IIRC, it's the same error.

I agree with matt, when we first started using Windows 7 in our production environment, we had a few
incompatibility issues because win7 uses different protocols by default. I also remember having to disable
IPv6 because SBS 2003 didn't natively support it and windows 7 defaulted to it.
Btw, in the KB article, the reference to the server 2003 print server would include using winXP as a print
server as they are based on the same kernel.

The client computer in question doesn't have the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies
\Microsoft\Windows NT\Printers\".. It has: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
NT\ but no printers after it..

IIRC windows only adds the sub-keys that it needs. If it doesn't have any values to add to a sub-key it
won't create it until it needs to.

As Michael says (and the article I believe) you have to add it manually if it's not there.

The article says you need to add the DWORD value, it says nothing about needing to add the printer
subkey.. I have added it and I'm waiting to hear back from the client if it fixed it.
Thanks

Is this machine connected to a domain and the user with user permissions is trying to install a network
printer? A error occurs, permissions denied?
A security policy needs to be changed to allow users to be permitted to install network printers drivers
without elevation.
If needed I will post the solution.

I had a similar machine, but turned out it was because i was using the wrong driver to connect, the error
message was quite misleading.

Add the printer as local;
i go to create new port;
select "Local Port";
create the door "Local Port";
enter the port name: here put the ip or computer name + the name of the printer (\ \ server \ label)
At this point is already to recognize, there will ask if you want to leave it as default.
OK.
I hope this solves!
Anderson.

In your original post I do not see where you specified if the Windows 7 Ultimate PC is 32 or 64 bit. Also
what is the server? 32 or 64?

Thanks. This worked for me. I was trying to connect a label printer attached to Windows xp (32-bit) to
Windows 7 (32-bit), over the network.

Go under the registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Print\Printers\*YOUR PRINTER
NAME*\CopyFiles
delete the Copy files key and subkeys. Works instantly after that.

Does anyone have the answer for my delima? I have a windows 7 machine, I have the ip address of
another windows 7 machine that I would like to install a printer on. I click on start, then run, then I add the
ip address of the remote computer. The computer shows up, and on the task bar, one of the tabs says
(View a remote printer), I click there and I get the add printer tab. As soon as I click this tab I receive an
error message stating that I don't have sufficient rights to perform this operation. I am a domain admin as
well as an admin of this machine. This use to work seamlessly in windows Xp but windows 7 doesn't even
give you the option to install as an admin. Please help, tell me what I am missing.
