INTRODUCTION TO L& T

 INTRODUCTION :-

Larsen & Toubro Ltd. is India’s premier technology –

Engineering, Infrastructure and Basic Industries.

and Toubro Limited profoundly known as “L & T”. Two Danish
engineers Padmabhushan awarded Henning Holck Larsen and
Soren K. Toubro established the company on May 1st, 1938 as a
partnership firm. It started off as a dream with refineries, steel plants,
fertilizer and chemical processing desk, telephone and a small
workshop, which made small items like milk pasteurizer, butter
churns and other dairy items.

It was declared a Private Limited Company in 1946 and a

Public Limited Company in 1950 with a paid up share capital of 20
lakhs and had a sales turnover of 109 lakhs. From that modest
beginning it, has grown into today’s multiproduct diversified firm,
now being the nucleus of a group of companies.

Today Larsen and Toubro Limited and its associated

companies provide world quality services and products to basic
infrastructure projects like roads, railways, airports, ports and the
power sector. It also deals in the manufacturing of heavy equipment
for the needs of industries like petrochemicals, refineries, steel
plants, power plants, fertilizer and chemical processing plants, design
and manufacture of earth moving equipment, manufacturing of

welding equipment and manufacture of valves. The list is virtually

endless and continues to grow with every passing year as it enters
newer fields wherever the opportunity arises.

Recently, the Nuclear Equipment Business (NEB) of L&T’s

Heavy Engineering Division has won the Industrial Excellence
Award instituted by the Indian Nuclear Society (INS). The award
recognizes NEB’s contribution to the development of nuclear energy
sector in the country.

Chairman & Managing Director, Mr. A. M. Naik was honored with

the coveted E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the
professional category by Ernst &Young.

He has also won India’s most coveted award:

- The Economic Times ‘Business Leader of the Year’.

The Award signifies the highest level of recognition, and

acknowledges Mr. Naik as one of the most admired and respected
business leaders of our times.

On October 22, 2008 India’s first mission to the moon was

successfully launched from the Sriharikota Space Port. India's
Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C11 placed the 1380 kg
Chandrayaan-I Spacecraft in an elliptical orbit.While this was a

historic moment for all Indians, it was a special occasion of pride

for L&T as its Heavy Engineering Division (HED) has been
closely involved with this effort. L&T-made Equipment Engaged
in Launch & Tracking of Chandrayaan-I.

The company ranks second in India's private sector

with it's turnover as high as Rs. 25,863 crore for the year
ended 31st March 2008 as against Rs. 18,423 crore for the
previous financial year registering an increase of 40%. Profit
before tax (after interest and depreciation charges) of Rs.3155
crore. Profit after tax of Rs. 2173 crore as against Rs.2005 crore
& Rs.1403 crore for the previous year improved by 57% & 55%
respectively.The Company employs about 25800 personnel,
which includes about 9700 executive and supervisory staff.
The Company has 24 manufacturing units, spread in 7 states in
the country. It has a network of 4 Regional Offices, 12 Branch
Offices and 10 Resident Representatives. L & T-group of
companies include 15 subsidiary and 13 Associate Companies.
Over the years the Company has established itself as one of the
largest industries and Engineering institutions in India.

Over the years the company has grown by leaps &

bounds & has diversified range of products. Now L & T products
are exported to over forty countries & also sold within the
country through its regional offices located at Mumbai, Pune,
Kolkata & New Delhi. In addition to this L&T has many
representatives spread out all over the India. Now L&T has 15
manufacturing complex located at Mumbai (Powai), Banglore,
Kansbhal, Hazira, Mysore, Hirmi, Faridabad & at many other
known cities.

 L & T SPECTRUM :-

 Engineering And Construction Projects :-

This constitutes a critical part of the company's

engineering core. Larsen and Toubro has integrated its strengths in
process technology, basic and detailed engineering, equipment
fabrication, procurement, project management, erection and
construction and commissioning, to offer single point responsibility
under stringent delivery schedules. This group is structured into 3
business clusters, viz. Process, Product, and Mineral.

 Construction :-

Larsen and Toubro offers turnkey construction

services and engineered turnkey industrial and infrastructure
projects in civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation
engineering, through ECC-its Engineering, Construction and
Contracts division. The head Quarters of the division is located
at Chennai.

 Heavy Engineering Division (HED) :-

Larsen and Toubro’s Heavy Engineering business

activities are organized under self-reliant Strategic Business Units
(SBUs), each specializing in different product lines. They meet the
needs of major industries like Chemical, Petrochemical, Refineries,
Iron and Steel, Paper and Pulp, Minerals and Metals, Rubber
Processing Machinery, Extrusion Plants, Plastic Processing Machinery
like Injection Moulding Machines etc. The Plant and equipment are

 Electrical And Electronics :-

L & T is India’s largest manufacturer of low voltage

switchgear and control gear, petroleum metering and dispensing
pumps. In field of electronics, Larsen and Toubro offers spectrum
products and services required by the industrial sector as well as
medical equipment.

 Information Technology :-

L & T offers both on-site & offshore software consultancy

services to organization in South East Asia, West Africa & Europe in
areas like customized software development, software maintenance,
packing development, SAP consultancy, CAD\CAM and GIS services.

 Machinery & Industrial Products (MIPD)

L&T offers a range of industrial machinery and products
