W welcome ven if youre not a swot or bookworm, chances are youve got at least a few books lying around your home, or perhaps you feel theyre simply cluttering up your personal space. If so youre missing an inexpensive interior trick because well displayed books can transform a home, no matter if theyre valuable leather-bound first editions or just a motley collection of beach-battered holiday reads. Their decorative covers will provide essential colour and Pulse Interiors 12 jewishnews.co.uk Books can transform a room, but the last thing you want is for them to clutter up your space. Gabrielle Fagan discovers the best ways to display and store books to make your home warm and welcoming TRY A SPOT OF TOME IMPROVEMENT E interest to a space, and the titles can reveal a lot about their owner. It would be hard to find a more fervent enthusiast of displaying books than writer Leslie Geddes-Brown. Her home boasts the equivalent of a mini-library in the living room as well as shelves groaning with books in the kitchen, bathroom and lining the walls of the downstairs cloakroom. Although writers like to believe that books have a higher, sterner purpose, says Leslie with a smile, in fact they do also furnish a room. Take an unadorned space, cover one wall with crowded bookshelves, add a chair and a table, also crowded with books, and you have a furnished room. To prove her point, Leslie has sought homes around the world where books truly star and whose interiors she reveals in her new lavishly illustrated book, Books Do Furnish A Room. Leslie, former deputy editor of World of Interiors magazine, recognises that not everyone is a serious reader or researcher or wants a library, but she suggests books in modest batches should be successfully displayed in decorative bookcases. Books, in my view, should be in every corner of the house, with the possible exception of the larder, she says firmly. To me, a room without books is missing an essential feature, as important as lights, chairs or carpets. And they tell you so much about a person. When I visit friends houses its always heartening to see a few bodice-rippers and thrillers in among the Booker prize-winners! You can tell a minimalist because all the decorative covers will be hidden under plain wrappers, or a rebel who leaves books piled in untidy heaps. Certainly the remarkable success of Ikeas simple Billy bookcase, which celebrated its 30th birthday this year, demonstrates that books are an essential in the modern home. Since Billys creation by Scandinavian, Gillis Lundgren - who made an initial, casual sketch of its design on a handy table napkin a total of 41 million have been sold. Laid out end to end they would stretch almost twice around the world at the equator. Lundgrens delighted at the popularity of his versatile concept which comes in a range of types and sizes. Im particularly happy that Billy has made it possible for so many people to build their own little library, he says. In the old days books were quite uncommon in most homes. These days everyone has books, which is as it should be. Look around your home and see if you can spy corners or crannies or larger spaces that can be enhanced by books. Make tailor-made shelves distinctive by asking a carpenter or shelf supplier to tailor and vary their layout to suit your particular book collection. For instance, reams of compact paperbacks need less height between each shelf, and then you could break up the uniformity by making a feature with a deeper shelf for large height books. An open space under the stairs might be an ideal space for book shelves, or perhaps an empty fireplace filled with bright red books as an eye-catching substitute for flickering flames. But do make sure the chimney is sealed properly, and there is an air vent so as to avoid damp. If a living room is very large, an oversized set of bookshelves will reduce the space and add warmth to the whole, says Leslie. Please yourself in how you display your books. But when the prevailing decor is casual, cottagey or comfortable, books can echo this by not being too rigorously organised. Of course in a formal room, whether Georgian or minimalist, the opposite principle applies. You could display your books from arranging them by size, grouping all those with the same colour covers, or by subject, or if youre orderly alphabetically. And try using a bookcase as a room divider, far preferable to a dividing wall in a dark space. Choose one with open shelves if you want to allow more light through the room. VOLUME CONTROL Smaller homes and demands on space mean most of us dont want books spilling everywhere. But its a shame to hide them in boxes when there are so many brilliant bookshelves and units around. My favourite for uber-cool, contemporary style is a Dedale Frame Bookshelf, 1,738 from Roche Bobois. The wall unit is made from a material which looks like thick glass, available in a lacquer or satin finish, and in a choice of colours white, black, orange or bold red. For elegant informality, John Lewis Pisa ladder-style walnut unit, 190, is a winner. It can come in five shelves, or with two shelves and a desk, for 161. Theres a fashionable Scandinavian look to OKAs dresser style desk, the Borgholm, for 850, and its decorative back board incorporates three roomy shelves. A Petworth Cabinet, 1,095, in dark wood with four doors with open chicken wire panels could conjure a French chateau atmosphere, and its handsome Library shelves, in various sizes, start from 595. BUDGET BUY: Ikeas Billy bookcases start from 9.99 for a basic white unit 46x106cm. The extensive range now includes a new Billy Bjasta, 39, available with a funky graffiti-style interior and made to celebrate the products 30th birthday. TURN THE PAGES Vintage books can be turned into art by displaying them so the spines are against the wall and the gilt-edged pages face outwards to create a glimmering bookshelf, which will catch the light. If you dont own any old volumes, try an online dealer such as Golden Books Group, which sells books with gilded pages, or source them at antique fairs or second hand bookshops. Founder and owner Paul Chesney says: A fireplace can be an eye-catching centrepiece that transforms a room. He adds that that while period and historical designs remain popular, the trend is increasingly for simpler, sleeker pieces. Look for Chesneys classic Victorian fireplace, 550, and the Burlington, a clean-line limestone surround, 1,395. You can also shop around on the high street for some great faking-it surrounds and fires. Wickes has a superb selection of stylish fireplaces, including the Milano surround that can be fitted for gas or electric fires, 587.99. CLASSIC DESIGNS Homebase carries some great classic designs. Try the Faro Fire or Estroril Fire made of natural Portuguese limestone. Both sets include a mantel back panel and hearth and cost 799. WARM WALLS A fab feature fireplace neednt be a square hole in the wall - the post box shape is also becoming a cool choice. Jonathan Burnett at Wickes says: Electric fires, lets face it, were ugly, but are becoming very popular. The technology now produces flame effects that rival gas and real fires. Turn on to the style with a Wickes wall mounted Dali electric fire, 399.99, with a textured black finish and glass front. For a gas flame effect version, opt for the Turner fire, 899.99. The electric wall hung Valor Vivo, a black flat-screen style pebble fire, has burning good looks and costs 169.99 from Argos. RETRO RADIATORS Retro addicts who love Smegs 1950s-inspired kitchen appliance range will warm to its gas fire, from 850. This wall-mounted fire boasts eco-energy credentials and comes in a funky range of colours including red, pink, blue, silver and black. SUPER STOVES Stoves offer more than 80 percent heat efficiency, making them a green choice, because the heat is contained and not lost up a chimney as in an open fire. Most need a flue, a pipe to dispose of the fumes, so install this in a fireplace or against an outer wall. Cast iron is the traditional choice, but steel is more modern looking and echoes Scandinavian style. They can burn wood or coal. Karsten Aagaard, head of product design at stove company Morso, advises: Make sure you choose a stove that suits your needs, choosing a stove thats oversized for the job will cause you problems. RECYCLED WARMTH The style-conscious could toast their toes in front of an eco-friendly Hotpod, 3040. Its made in Cornwall from a surprising range of reclaimed materials, including VW parts and a saucepan lid! There is also a cheaper version made from recycled iron for 1,950. HOT DESIGNS Most UK homes are reliant on radiators for warmth, generally as part of a central heating system. Thankfully, radiators have been re-born. So long dull white metal slabs! Theyre now more artistic and can be dual purpose, incorporating towel rails, mirrors or units. Susan Jordan, owner of The Radiator Gallery in South Woodford, says: People dont want to hide their radiators away anymore. Radiator styles are now edging towards contemporary looks. Jordan says vertical radiators that look modern and take up less space are increasingly in demand. Contemporary stainless steel styles, such as The Venetian, from 651, and the Arc, from 211, available at The Radiator Gallery are especially popular. Getting your room assessed for the type of radiator you need to heat a room appropriately can help save energy and costs. If you have the right size radiator you are giving out the right size heating and not wasting energy, says Jordan. She recommends fitting an individual thermostat valve to control the heating. MODERN LOOK Choose a feast for the eyes with the Archibald Chrome, from 549, an Italian designed towel- rail shaped like coat hangers. The Radiator Gallery also offers other beautifully designed options like the Figliol Prodigo, from 3176, and the Bernini, from 4935, both of which would provide more than a touch of glamour to a modern house. BECAUSE KATYAS ASKING! f it was not for Katya Virshilas mum, fans of Strictly Come Dancing may never have had the opportunity to watch the award-winning dancer sprinkle some extra cha-cha-cha into Saturday night television, alongside her celebrity partner Phil Tufnell. Fourteen years ago, long before the hit BBC show became a staple of Saturday night television or Len Goodman shouted his first SEVEN!, a young Katya attended her first ballroom dance lesson in Vancouver shortly after emigrating from Israel. But so intimidated was the 13-year- old by the standard of her younger classmates that it was also nearly her last lesson. It was only after the intervention of mum Ina and a little help from a 25 bribe that the teenager was persuaded to continue. To say that much has happened to Katya between those early dramas and the day I interviewed her at a central London hotel last month would be something of an understatement. Some things never change though the 26- year-olds mum, in London to spend a week with her daughter, was by her side as I waltzed into the room. Only five days had elapsed since shed watched her daughter being knocked out of the competition, but Ina is bursting with pride at her girls performances and dedication over the years. When you see Katya dance you cannot take your eyes off her, she tells me. She has worked so hard since she started her career at the age of 13. Shes a great dancer and choreographer. And there are no shortage of achievements to underscore this high praise. A former British Columbian Latin Dance Champion who went on to represent Canada at the World Championships, she has also taken on several acting roles on the big and small screens. Two years ago, driven by her passion for teaching, she opened a dance school in Canada where she passes on the tricks of the trade to children and adults. Though she plans to return to Canada temporarily in February, Katyas fans neednt despair. She is currently gearing up for a series of spectacular dance shows at venues across London and beyond, and also hopes to be tripping the light fantastic again in next years Strictly Come Dancing. And if you are among her army of male admirers hoping to catch her eye while she is in town, there is a vacancy for a special someone to show single Kayta around the capital and help her indulge her love of food. Just a little tip for any potential dinner date: She lists pita and hummus with Israeli pickles among her favourite snacks.
