TAMILNADU COMMON ADMISSIONS (TANCA) - 2008
Admission to M.E./M.Tech./M.Arch./M.Plan. Degree Programmes
The P.G. Programme has core courses and electives. The full time programme has 4 semesters
and part-time programme has 6 semesters with lecture-based courses, practical or design-oriented
courses. The final semester of each P.G. degree programme is fully devoted for project work.
1. PROGRAMME OF STUDY
M.E /M.Tech. /M.Arch. /M.Plan. – (GATE / Non-GATE – Aided & Self-supporting / Full Time /
Part Time)
In the Tamil Nadu G.O. M.S. No. 46, Higher Education (J2) Department Dated: 21.02.2004,
and G.O.1(D) No.32, Higher Education (J2) Department Dated 3.3.2008 the Government of
Tamil nadu has nominated Anna University Chennai as nodal agency to conduct the Tamilnadu
Common Admission for M.E./M.Tech./ M.Arch./M.Plan Degree Programmes through single window
counselling at Anna University Chennai.
2. ELIGIBILITY FOR M.E. /M.Tech./M.Arch. /M.Plan. ( As given in Annexure – I )
Candidates appearing for final year/semester examination of the said qualifying degree course in
April / May 2008 may also apply. Candidates who have passed all the subjects in the qualifying
examination but have not yet received the provisional/degree certificate will also be considered for
selection and they should produce the Degree certificate / Provisional Certificate on or before
02.09.2008 without fail and the candidates must have valid GATE 2008 score (or) must have
appeared for TANCET - 2008.
3. ADMISSION INFORMATION
3.1. GENERAL
• Candidates must fill the application form and coding sheet carefully.
• Candidates other than GATE A Category must have appeared for TANCET - 2008.
• Candidates must have passed degree / appeared / appearing for the final semester / year exam. of the
qualifying degree examination from recognized Universities.
• Seats of P.G. Programmes are filled as per the reservation norms prescribed by the Government of
Tamilnadu.
• BC, BC Christian, BC Muslim, MBC/DNC, SC & ST categories are applicable to Tamilnadu
candidates only.
• Other State candidates will be classified under “OTHERS” category as applicable
• Hostel accommodation is not available for the students admitted in the University Departments
of Anna University Chennai.

• If a GATE candidate desires to be considered for the Non - GATE seat also, he/she must have
appeared for TANCET - 2008 and he has to apply for TANCA.
• Candidates admitted in self supporting programmes are not eligible for any scholarship (or) fee
concessions.
• Candidates seeking admission to part-time (evening) programmes should satisfy the admission
authorities that they will be in a position to attend the classes in the evenings and also on holidays and
fulfill the requirements regarding attendance as laid down by the University from time to time. If they
are working, the working place should be within a distance of 65 km from the study campus.
Grouping of candidates who apply for admission to full time P.G. Programmes in Engineering,
Technology, Architecture and Planning.
3.3 STIPEND
Full-Time candidates with GATE qualification admitted under GATE-A (or) GATE -B category (other
than those deputed/sponsored) to the Post-Graduate Degree Programmes of Anna University Chennai
are eligible for the award of stipend in the P.G. Degree Programmes subject to the fulfillment of the
conditions laid down by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
Candidates who are admitted, under Non-GATE category may become eligible for stipend, subject to
the availability of unutilized stipend, from the date on which they qualify themselves in the GATE
subsequently but before the completion of the programme.

GATE-A Category : Candidates who have a valid GATE percentile score in the appropriate discipline
belong to this category.
GATE-B Category : Candidates who have valid GATE percentile score in Engineering Science (XE)
and Life Science (XL) belong to this category. Candidates under this category must also have written
the TANCET - 2008 conducted by Anna University Chennai. A common merit list will be published for
GATE - A and GATE - B candidates.
For candidates belonging to GATE-B category, the mark is calculated by considering both the
GATE score and TANCET - 2008 marks with a weightage of 70% and 30% respectively, and the
candidates will be considered under GATE-A category.
Non-GATE Category : All the candidates who have appeared for TANCET 2008 conducted by the
Anna University Chennai are eligible under this category.

SPONSORED Category (only for University Departments of Anna University Chennai):
A limited number of seats for Full-Time / Part-time study are also available in certain P.G.
Degree Programmes for candidates employed and sponsored by the Government/Educational Institution
at the University Departments of Anna University, Chennai:
For Sponsored category in Govt./ Govt. Aided Engineering Colleges seats will be filled by the
individual institutions and the candidates have to apply separately to the Institutions concerned.
• Such candidates should be deputed with full pay and allowances during the period of study
• Such candidates should have obtained 55% of marks or above in aggregate in the qualifying exam.
However, the minimum percentage of marks will be waived for those candidates who are teachers
either in Engg. College / Polytechnics approved by the AICTE
• Such candidates must have a minimum of two years full time experience in the relevant field of the
programme to which admission is sought after passing the qualifying degree
• All such candidates should have appeared for TANCET 2008 conducted by Anna University Chennai
• Such candidates should have their permanent place of work within a distance of 65 km. by road
from the study campus of Anna University Chennai.
• They should have a minimum of one-year regular employment in time scale salary (not on
consolidated salary) after passing the qualifying examination. They should be working in the
relevant field in which admission is sought.
• They should have obtained 55% of marks or above in aggregate in the qualifying examination.
However, the minimum percentage of marks is relaxable for those who are teachers in Engineering
Colleges/Polytechnics approved by the AICTE.
• Sponsorship Part-Time classes will be held during day time only.
• All such candidates must have appeared for TANCET 2008 conducted by Anna University Chennai.
Note: Candidate should file separate applications for GATE-A / GATE-B, Non-GATE,
SPONSORED Full-Time / SPONSORED Part-Time categories.
Women candidates with B.E in Civil Engg. / Geo informatics / Agricultural Engg. and with
interest in water sector are eligible for M.E Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) with
fellowship of Rs.5000/- per month (for which TANCET is not required). A separate application has to
be filed and on the top of the application please write “application for M.E (IWRM)”.

3.5 ENCLOSURES
Attested xerox copies of the following are to be enclosed (Original should not be enclosed) :
i) Degree certificate (or) provisional degree certificate in the case of candidates who have passed in
2007 (or) earlier. Candidates appearing for final semester/year exam. of the qualifying degree in
April/May 2008 have to enclose a Course completion Certificate optained from the Head of the
institution where the candidate is studying/ studied clearly stating that the candidate is a final year
student and that he/she has appeared for final semester exam. in April/May 2008.
ii) GATE score card for GATE A category
iii) GATE score Card and TANCET 2008 Hall Ticket for GATE B category
iv) TANCET 2008 Hall Ticket for NON-GATE category and for sponsored full-time/part-time
v) Mark lists of all semesters of Qualifying Examination completed.
vi) `Permanent Community Certificate in the case of Tamil Nadu for BC, BC Christian, BC Muslim,
MBC/DNC & SC/ST Candidates in the card format prescribed by the Government of Tamil Nadu in
G.O.Ms.No.781 (Revenue Department) dated 02.05.1988.
In the case of ST candidates, community certificate should have been issued by the Revenue
Divisional Officer/ Sub-Collector of the District concerned (except Chennai District / P.A. General to
the Collector for Chennai District) vide Govt. Lr. No. 32061 / ADWII / 89 - 2, Dt : 27.12.1989 and Lr.
No. 21424 / ADWII / 94 - 4, Dt : 15.11.1994 from the Secretary to Government, Adi Dravidar and
Tribal Welfare Department, Chennai - 600 009. The permanent Community certificate card issued to
ST candidates by Tahsildars up to 11.11.1989 is valid.
For Communities linked with Districts (see Annexure - II as furnished in the Information and
Instructions to candidates) the candidates should obtain their Community Certificate in the respective
Districts. The Community Certificates obtained from other than the respective district will not be
considered.
3.6.1 Candidates will be selected and admitted through counselling. More number of candidates than the
actual number of seats available will be called for counselling. The required number of candidates will
only be offered admission depending upon the seats available and based on the merit of the candidates
who attend counselling as per reservation norms of Govt. of Tamil Nadu and others cannot claim any
right for admission. Candidate has to opt for one programme among the programmes available at the
time of counselling.
3.6.2 The GATE Candidate must appear with the GATE Original Score card (Additional card will
not be accepted) for counselling. The candidate without GATE Original Score card will not be
allowed for Counselling.
a) For GATE-A category the selection will be based on the merit list of GATE score. For candidates of
GATE-B category, the admission will be offered based on the merit list prepared by considering
GATE score and TANCET - 2008 marks together a weightage of 70% and 30% respectively and will
added along with the GATE-A category merit list.

b) For candidates under NON-GATE Category, the admission will be offered based on the merit list of
TANCET - 2008 marks.
c) For sponsored candidates (for University Departments of Anna University Chennai), a merit list based
on TANCET 2008 marks will be prepared for full time and part time study. Selection will be made
through counselling separately. The admission will be offered based on the merit list of TANCET
2008.
d) For a common rank list is for SC/ST candidates for GATE category.
e) If there is a tie (same score/marks obtained in TANCET - 2008 by more than one candidate)
while preparing merit list, the candidate having higher average percentage of marks upto pre-
final semester / year of the qualifying degree exam will be given higher rank.
f) GATE Scholarship and fee Concessions are not available for the candidates who get allotment
in Self-Supporting Degree Programmes.
There is no special reservation for Physically Challenged candidates in GATE category.
3.6.3 Candidates who have passed all the subjects in the qualifying examination but have not yet received
the provisional/degree certificate will also be considered for selection. If such candidates are offered
provisional admission they have to join the programme on the prescribed date after paying the
prescribed fee. They have to produce the Provisional/Degree Certificate on or before 02.09.2008. The
provisional admission of those who fail to produce the said certificate on or before the specified date,
even if eligible, will automatically stand cancelled and they have to discontinue the programme.
4. COUNSELLING
a) Candidates who have passed all the subjects of the qualifying degree examination alone
will be allowed to attend the counselling.
b) Call letters for counselling will be sent to the individuals through post. The counselling
schedule and cutoff mark will also be informed through advertisement in the Leading News Papers
and Anna University Chennai website: http://www.annauniv.edu/tanca2008
c) The counselling will be held at Anna University Chennai, Guindy, Chennai 25. Candidates
should attend the counselling at their own cost with all the original certificates (or) attested Xerox
copies / (except GATE score card). GATE candidates have to submit their original GATE score card
if the offer of provisional admission is acceptable.
d) No change of date/time of counselling is permissible. Authorities are not responsible for the
postal delay or non receipt of counselling intimation. Candidates who do not attend the counselling
may have to forgo the claim of admission.
e) On the day of counselling the candidates have to pay Rs. 5,300/- (Rs. 1,150/- in case of
SC/ST candidates belonging to Tamil Nadu) which includes a non refundable fee of Rs.300/- as
counselling charges (Rs.150/- in case of SC/ST candidates belonging to Tamil Nadu) and attend the
counselling with all the original certificates.
f) Due to unforeseen and unavoidable reasons, if a candidate is unable to attend the counselling
on the specified date and time, he/she can authorize his/her parent on his/her behalf and the parent’s

decision will be binding on the candidate. An authorisation letter must be submitted in this regard by
the parents.
g) Due to unforeseen reasons, if a candidate could not attend the counselling on the specified
date and time, he/she can attend on a subsequent time/date, during the counselling period. But the
candidate can only opt for the seats available at that time and cannot claim any seat as per original
rank.
h) Once allotted a seat the amount of Rs. 5,000/- for general (for Tamil Nadu SC / ST
Rs.1,000/-) already paid at the time of counselling will be adjusted towards the tuition fee that has to
be paid to the respective allotted college. If a candidate does not join as per the allotment he/she has to
forfeit the amount paid. All admissions made through the single window system are provisional.
Candidates are advised to post the completed application well in advance so as to reach Anna
University Chennai on or before the specified date and time. If it is sent by post it is advisable to send
by Registered post or Speed post to ensure proper delivery.
The Secretary, Tamil Nadu Common Admission will not be responsible for postal or any
other delay. Applications received after the last date and time will be summarily rejected.
Those who want to receive the call letter for counselling by Registered Post or Speed Post
must affix stamps covering Speed Post or Registered Post charges on the envelope meant for call
letter for Counselling and mention “By Registered Post or Speed Post” on it.
Candidates once allotted will be given the provisional allotment order and receipt of the initial
payment. There after the candidates have to pay the remaining fees to the college concerned at the
time of admission on the date specified in the allotment order. No further correspondence will be
entertained on matter pertaining to the Admissions.
Counselling and allotting authorities reserve the right to accept or reject any application
without assigning any reason.
5. MAILING ADDRESS
The completed applications are to be sent to “The Secretary, TANCA, Examination Centre, Anna
University Chennai, Chennai - 600 025” to reach on or before. 27.06.2008. Candidates sending the
applications by post should mail them sufficiently early so that the applications reach the University
before the last date.
6. IMPORTANT DATE
Last date for receipt of completed applications: 27.06.2008, by 5:30 pm.

7. PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED CATEGORY
(As per Medical Certificate given in Certificate No. I if applicable)
(Only for Non-GATE Programmes)
Candidates seeking PG admission against the reservation set apart for Orthopaedically
physically Handicapped / Hearing impaired (Deaf) / Vision Impairment (dumb) should produce the
certificate from the respective District Medical Board certifying the nature and extent of disability in
percentage and with regard to his/her suitability for PG admission to Colleges specifically mentioned
below.
For hearing impaired / visually impaired, the certificate format can be downloaded from website.
7.1 Eligibility criteria for various disabilities
a. Norms for Orthopaedic Disability
[
Candidates with permanent physical impairment between 40% and above are considered as
disabled, and hence eligible for claiming Engineering admission under Physically Handicapped
category.
(i) Independent in ambulance with or without calipers but without walking aids.
(ii) Good standing balance without calipers but without any support.
(iii) Hand Function with normal limit without any aid
(iv) Good control over bladder & bowl
(v) Disease must be non progressive
b. Norms for Hearing Disability
Candidates with hearing ability of 40 db and above only in the better ear with speech discriminations
score of 50% and above are considered disabled, and hence eligible for claiming Engineering admissions
under Physically Challenged category.
