COURSE NAME: Industrial Hydraulics and Pneumatics
COURSE CODE: MCEN1112
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides a thorough introduction to the principles and applications of power transmission using pressurized fluid.
Topics include fluid power concepts and design calculations, component function and selection, and circuit design and operation.
Lecture material will be supplemented with laboratory work on circuit design and component disassembly. The course emphasis
will be on hydraulic systems with an introduction to pneumatic systems.

OUTCOME Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to
1 Select hydraulic fluids, filters, and conduits.

Identify basic components of hydraulic circuits.
Relate pressure, force, and area with regard to hydraulics.
State the purpose and function of hydraulic fluid.
Specify filters.
Specify conduits.
2 Differentiate, assess and choose hydraulic pumps and actuators.

Specify hydraulic pumps for given applications.
Compare cylinder and motor application.
3 Select various ancillary hydraulic components and devices.

State the function of seals.
State the function of accumulators.
Discuss the application of pressure intensification devices.
Discuss the design and construction of reservoirs.

4 Select hydraulic control valves to achieve desired circuit function.

Identify and select different types of pressure, direction, and flow control valves.
5 Analyze and design hydraulic circuit diagrams.

Interpret hydraulic circuit diagrams.
6 Identify pneumatic components and analyze pneumatic circuit diagrams.

Discuss the challenges in predicting pneumatic operations.
Discuss the benefits of pneumatically operated components and systems.
Specify common components utilized in a pneumatic system.
State the application of types of pressure regulators and control valves.

DELIVERY METHOD
This course will be taught using a variety of delivery methods which may include face-to-face, online, or blended teaching
platforms. Activities such as collaborative exercises/assignments, seminars, labs, discussion, audio/visual presentations, case
studies, and work integrated learning may be used to support learning.
