If you choose to update manually this service is
not needed. Personally, I manually run update
every morning so I have this service disabled. It's
been my experience that Automatic Update has
missed an occasional update as well as delaying
the time from when the update was released to
when Automatic Update states it's available. Your
experience may vary.

features such as Windows Update, and MSN
Explorer will be unable to automatically download
programs and other information. If this service is
disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it
may fail to transfer files if they do not have a fail
safe mechanism to transfer files directly through
IE in case BITS has been disabled.

I use a laptop, which is connected to the Internet via UMTS or
Satellite. As you may know this is an expensive method and
generally paid per MB. So I was quite annoyed, that my laptop
showed a mind of its own and started to generate a lot of traffic.
Investigation revealed there was a service started by svchost.
exe. Detailed investigation revealed, BITS was the culprit. I put it
to manual and stopped it. Testing showed the functionality of the
system is not impaired.
I send you this info, because more and more users are using
UMTS and the like. And the costs of a rogue process can be
quite high. To illustrate: I lost some $30 in network usage
charges, before I solved the problem.
And I have at least some utility software and expertise in my
toolkit. If one is unaware of this one can end up paying a lot
more than needed.

Basically, this is the application that controls COM
+ Event System. One of the support files that
you'll probably never have any use for, but if you
disable it, the warning notices you receive are
worse than leaving it enabled. Disabling this
service will generate Event Log entries noting it
isn't running. An annoyance, but not harmful.

What Microsoft said above. What they don't say
is that this service tends to run amok, indexing
far more than necessary and starting without
warning. For the benefit it provides, the resource
usage is far from an equal tradeoff. However, in
all fairness, if you have a reasonably powered
machine you might as well leave Indexing Service
on. It can speed things up a bit and most of the
systems capable of running XP efficiently
shouldn't be bogged down by having this service
running. If it does take a noticeable performance
hit it's really time to consider upgrading.

The Network Location Awareness service doesn't just have to do
with internet connection sharing but also with the built in firewall
so you should suggest this service to be automatic as well.
TEG: I agree that Internet Connection Firewall is also impacted by
NLA and if you use ICF setting it to Automatic won't hurt a thing.

Regarding your request for experiences with service "Portable Media Serial
Number":

I disabled this service a while back and did have have subsequent problems
with transferring some mp3 files to a Rio 600 I have.

I am fairly certain that it was added right before XP was released is directed
at future digital media rights enforcement. For instance, if you want to use
your media library with a new media player then you will be granted access
to those files (possibly stored on a remote server) if -- and only if -- your
media device has the established serial number.

Have you tried recording music with WMP9 beta? If not, take a look at it.

Great job on the services. You hit them all on the nose. You had asked
about portable media serial number the use for this would be example Sony
magic gate memory sticks use the secured audio that can only be
transferred between the pc media is on and the audio device mp3. It uses
this service to get the audio player serial number so that it will not allow you
to transfer the audio track to any other audio player. Please mail me with

The Protected Storage service certainly needs to be active if you
are using Outlook Express, otherwise you have to type the
password every time you want to check your emails. So it doesn't
just have to do with autocomplete or password storage for
Internet Explorer.
TEG: I agree that if you don't want the hassle of entering your
passwords that Automatic or Manual would be the way to go on
Protected Storage.

Every time You use Outlook Express And I Personally Have It
Disabled And Have No Problems What So Ever With Outlook
Express. It Logs On And Checks For Emails Without Me Entering

1/26/2004 - I've received a number of e-mails
from readers saying I should reconsider the
"Absolutely Not" rating I originally posted for this
service. The 1/26/2004 from Patrick, shown
below, is typical of the ones I've received, so for
the time being I'm changing the recommendation
to "Possibly" and will continue to monitor the e-
mail for additional responses on whether it should
be downgraded again.
06/29/2005 - I have once again changed the
Recommended Setting to Disabled and suggest
you scroll down and read the notes sent in by TEG
site visitors. I'm going to leave the "Possibly" in
place rather than change it to an "Absolutely Not"
scenario, but in 99% of the situations most are
likely to encounter, the dangers of having it
enabled far outweigh the benefits.
1/15/2003 - A note from Christopher N. regarding Remote Registry service.
I have found one program that requires that the Remote Registry Service to
be active and that is StatScanner, just thought I'd let you know as I've never
seen any other program that required it.
09/01/2003 - A note from Leif B. regarding Remote Registry service.
I was browsing MicroForge's products, and ran across one that requires the
Remote Registry Service to be running.
It's a tool for a network administrator to allow them to remotely audit the
company's client machines. Not a reason for the average home user to
enable Remote Registry Service, but a corporation might want to have the
service set to Automatic.

01/26/2004 - A note from Patrick regarding Remote Registry service.
Hello. I have been using your guide on services to cut down on the number
of services XP loads. My only comment is that you should change whether
the remote registry service is needed from "absolutely not" to "maybe
possibly". The reason is that if you turn that service off you can no longer
remotely access the registry. I know you think this is a good thing, but
truthfully, it is not. If someone were to ask a professional or friend for
remote assistance, the person accessing the computer would not be able to
access important registry settings. In my case, I sometimes daily will
remote desktop into my computer at home from work, and I have found
myself often accessing my registry for whatever reasons.

So, I think you should throw this one in the category of remote desktop/
remote assistance users.

By the way, the only people that can access this you have to set up with
user/pass. So I think it is pretty safe. but maybe not for the typical end user.

06/23/2005 - A note from Alex regarding Remote Registry service.
I had trouble with locating this as a thread in the forums, so I will resort to
email in the hopes my commentary will still be useful to others. This is in
reference to comments on the remote registry service in more recent
versions of windows. I'm sure others have probably responded to this in
numbers, but hopefully some of these points will be new to you.

In regards to the comments of "Patrick" [ see previous entry - J im/TEG ] in your
article, I am pretty sure that the Remote Registry Service is NOT used by
the RDP/Terminal Services Client subsystem. Commands run in an RDP
session are treated as local to the machine you are connected to. You can
run regedit from within an RDP session, and this is probably a much better
idea as you can still do this with the Remote Registry Service disabled.

The Remote Registry Service is generally only used by applications that need
to directly access the registry via RPC. It is not really an end user interface,
it's for programmers and admins. This is a really dangerous service and
should only be allowed if it is absolutely needed. There have been numerous
security issues with this system, and the underlying RPC/DCOM subsystems
make privilege exploitation attacks likely in the future.
Considering there is not an adequate default security and permissions
infrastructure in place in the registry to limit access from remote users,
disabling this by default is probably a better policy. Otherwise you may give
out access to allot more than you expected, including the local systems
username and password data and other sensitive information.

If memory serves, in many versions of windows this allows essentially
unrestricted anonymous access to the registry across the network. Recent
versions have (hopefully) improved this a bit, but it's still a high risk service.

If someone knows enough to program RPC safely they should be able to
figure out how to enable this service as needed (assuming they have
legitimate access rights in the first place).

At the end of the day it's your site of course. (and a good one IMHO). I'm
not sure if you hold a "never recommend to disable if it could break
ANYTHING" policy. If you don't want to change the recommendation to
disable, a clear warning about it's dangers is certainly in order, which you
seem to have covered.

I hear about it being a resource hog, not needed

I would just like to comment on the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
system process. It seems that when it is disabled, online
multiplayer video games cannot ping the master server to
retrieve a list of game servers to play on. I have just
confirmed that this occurs for Unreal Tournament 2003 and
Half-Life Counter-strike on my machine. When set to
automatic, the games ping the master server fine.

domain environments even in native mode Without it file
sharing does not work.

I love your site. It helped me know what services to disable and leave up...
my boot time is now 10 seconds.
Anyways....about the terminal service, it's required for Sony Vegas 4.0/5.0
video editing software to run. I had it disabled (as i didn't have any of the
listed items turned on, but then I kept getting an error message every time i
loaded Vegas....so....it's needed for me.

Helping out. Since I looked for this info myself a while back but did not find
it anywhere, I decided to do some testing myself to solve the issue. The
issue was that Windows Desktop Search Indexing Options was disabled on
my system after installing Windows Desktop Search & Toolbar.
Problem/Solution: The Terminal Services service is needed for this
configuration option to be enabled.

11/20/2002 - A note from Chris C. regarding the WebClient service.
On your website: http://www.theeldergeek.com/webclient.htm you stated
you were unsure of what the WebClient service actually does in WindowsXP.
I believe it is a redirector service for Distributed File Systems. I would think
disabling it would be fine if you don't have this type of network (some
college computer labs or businesses may). Home users can probably disable
it, but I'm sure it doesn't affect performance or security. It most likely does
something stupid like resolving share names to UNC address.

Based on the ONLY ms kb article even MENTIONING WebClient: http://
support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312181

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/slowbrowse02.
htm says that disabling the WebClient service can speed up network
browsing in My Network Places but it will prevent access to web-resident
network places, such as free disk storage from your ISP. How many people
actually use My Network Places for that?
It will probably be required for the .NET architechture in the future. Most
likely it will be as dead Channels were in Windows 98 first edition.

Here's the skinny on the WebClient Service on Windows XP:
1. Real World Description: the WebClient service provides WebDAV
(Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning) integration in the
Explorer shell. It makes it possible to use "web folders" and to
browse the file systems of web servers (not unlike FTP, but better --
adds secure password authentication and file locking) within an
Explorer window. WebDAV is an extension of the HTTP/1.1 protocol.
2. It is not needed.
3. You can also use Internet Explorer 5 and above for this functionality
