From poverty to
the doctors ofce
Whenhewas12yearsold,LarryKlomps
andhisyoungerbrotherwouldtaketheir
familyspushmowerandwalkupanddown
thesidewalksoftheirneighborhood.The
twoboyswouldknockontheirneighbors
doors,askingiftheyneededthegrasscutfor
acoupleofbucks.Mostkids,atsomepoint,
mowafewlawnsforpocketchange.ButLarry
andhisbrother,Vincent,werelookingfor
morethanpocketchange.Growinguppoor,
onandoffwelfare,mowingalawnputfood
onthetableorboughtanewsetofclothes.
Thetwolearnedearlytobeindependent.
Theirmotherwasdisabled,anendresult,
Larrysaid,ofanabusiverelationshipwith
hisfather.Sheraisedthetwoboysalmost
completelyalone.Fromtimetotime,
boyfriendswouldhangaroundthehouse,
butitappearedtheyweremoreinterestedin
momssupplyofpainpillsthansettlingdown
andhelpingthefamily.TodayLarryisaclean-
cut,23-year-old,whoseeyeslightupwhen
helaughs.Andyouwontndhimmowing
lawns.Insteadheiswalkingthecorridors
ofPennStateMiltonS.HersheyMedical
Center,wearingawhitecoatandcarryinga
stethoscope.Onlynineyearsafterpushing
thelawnmoweraroundtheneighborhood
wherehegrewup,Larryisarst-yearmedical
studentattheschool,hopingtospecializein
surgery.Hehasanundergraduatedegreefrom
PennState.Larryspath,fromamobilehome
inFloridatomedicalschoolinHershey,was
anythingbutstraight.
