Meditation
Worship #2
WHEN GOD ENTERS OUR PICTURE,
PLEASE COME TO ORDER!

A
miscellaneous cluster of people comes together and a buzz of conversation is heard.
Some of those attending are well acquainted; others are there for the first time. When a
leader says, “The meeting will come to order,” they become a unified group, ready to do
business. A common interest and a common purpose unite them, but it takes directing if
they are going to achieve something.

We prize human freedom. Life is enriched both by differing ideas that people have and by their
varied styles of speaking and working. It takes organization, though, to give life unity and make it
productive. The same God, who brought order out of chaos in creation, can bring order into our
society and into our private lives. Being free, we can accept God’s ordering or not, but life is much
better, when lived according to God’s plan.

The season of Lent helps us with this. While it focuses on the days that lead up to Christ’s crucifixion
and resurrection, these are seen in the context of His whole life and ministry. Some people
considered Jesus a dangerous radical, because He was not meticulous about every detail of the
ancient laws. For example, He healed a man on the Sabbath Day, when work was forbidden. Jesus
saw an ordering that focused more on people than on tradition. In doing so, He showed what God is
really like. God’s ways were His ways and they can become our ways as well.

Perhaps, it would be helpful during this season to review God’s ordering, almost as we would look
through a photo album. In a variety of actions, God seeks to bring wholeness to our lives, both as
individuals and as a society.

stewardship

the results of a Redeemed Life

CHANGING THE WORLD

If you’ve ever been to a high school or college graduation, then you’ve

had to sit through speeches. Graduates make them; administrators make
them; and the guest speakers make them. While they each have their own
way of saying it, for the most part, they all have the same point: “Go and
change the world.”

People who understand Christian stewardship already understand

this message, sometimes better than the speaker. For one thing, they
understand that it’s God’s message. For another, they know that people
shouldn’t wait until they are adults to be told to “change the world.”
Children can be good stewards, and practicing good stewardship changes
the world from the moment it begins.

Painfully cold hands of a homeless person change to warm, comfortable

ones when a child hangs a pair of gloves on a mitten tree. Lonely children
can find a world of kindness and friendship in a church when a child invites
them to Sunday school. Homes can be built or repaired for those in need.
Farms in distant parts of the globe can become more self-sufficient when
children donate money for livestock. The list goes on.

Good stewardship usually begins when a Christian is a child, and is usually

taught by parents. However, there’s nothing wrong with these speeches.
They may inspire those who are already good stewards to become better
ones, and convince those who are not to begin to give of their time, talent
and treasure, which is a worthwhile form of stewardship.
