Workshop on Biofloc Technology and Shrimp Diseases

The damage inflicted by outbreaks and spread of viral and bacterial
diseases costs the aquaculture industry many billions of dollars per
year. Recent shrimp losses in many major producing countries have
had severe economic repercussions. Disease control is critical to the
existence of sustainable and profitable aquaculture. Recently,
increasing laboratory and field observations have been reported on
the use of biofloc technology (or green water and other integrated
aquaculture methods) to help manage such disease outbreaks. Yet, in
most cases, these observations were not objectively supported,
precluding the establishment of clear, reproducible and detailed
conclusions. The present workshop is being organized to review new
scientific studies and observations on the effect of biofloc technology
on disease occurrence and on the health of shrimp and fish, to
summarize field experience, to suggest further research priorities and
to propose applied strategies to minimize disease outbreaks.

The workshop will take place on December 9-10 in Ho Chi Minh
City, Vietnam, immediately preceeding APA13 conference. A round-
table discussion on Dec 10 is expected to attract a great number of
aquaculture producers for information exchange and the
establishment of collaboration. Simultaneous translation is available
on Dec 10 for Vietnamese participants. Book of abstracts either in
English or Vietnamese are provided at the workshop while the
proceedings will be sent to all participants via email later on.
