(b) x2 − x − 11xy + 24y2 + 3y (3 marks)
(a) x2 − 11xy + 24y2 = (x − 8y)(x − 3y)

(b) x2 − x − 11xy + 24y2 + 3y = x2 − 11xy + 24y2 − (x − 3y)

= (x − 8y)(x − 3y) − (x − 3y)

= (x − 3y)(x − 8y − 1)

(a) the base radius of the conical cup, (3 marks)

Let r cm be the base radius of the conical cup.
216
2πr = 2π (15)
360
∴ r=9

∴ the base radius of the conical cup is 9 cm.

(b) the height of the conical cup. (2 marks)

Let h cm be the height of the conical cup

h2 + 92 = 152 (Pyth. Thm.)

∴ h = 12

∴ the height of the conical cup is 12 cm.

(c) Determine whether the point (8, 10) lies on y = f(x). (2 marks)
f(8) = 82 − 8(8) + 12

= 12

≠ 10

∴ the point (8, 10) does not lie on y = f(x).

13. In Fig. 13a, the base radius of a cylindrical cup is 5 cm. 5 identical chocolate balls with
radius x cm, where 1≤ x ≤ 3, are melted in a cylindrical cup. The depth of the liquid in
the cup is (2x − 1) cm. Assume that the volume of chocolate balls remains unchanged
after they melt.

4x3 = 3 × 5 (2x − 1)

∴ 4x3 − 30x + 15 =0

(b) Fig. 13b shows the graph of y = 2x3 − 12x + 4. By adding a suitable straight line
to the graph, solve 4x3 − 30x + 15 =0. (5 marks)
y = 2x3 − 12x + 4

y = 3x − 3.5

Fig. 13b

4x3 − 30x + 15 =0

2 x 3 − 15 x + 7.5 = 0

2 x 3 − 12 x + 4 = 3 x − 3.5

∴ y = 3x − 3.5

By adding y = 3x − 3.5 to the graph,

x = 2.45
