General Purpose: To persuade

Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience about the that internet access should be free to
everyone
Thesis Statement: The internet is an important tool used by most of the world and finances
should not limit a person from internet usage.

Introduction
I. Attention Getter: Contrary to popular belief and usage, the internet is not made up
solely of pictures of cats and videos of hair tutorials.

II. Thesis/Introduce Topic: There are many useful aspects of the internet such as access to
important information and services.

III. Credibility Statement: In relation to the topic of worldwide internet shortage, stated by
the New York Times: Administration officials and policy experts say they are
increasingly concerned that a significant portion of the population, around 60 million
people, is shut off from jobs, government services, health care and education, and that
the social and economic effects of that gap are looming larger.

IV. Preview: Today, I would like to discuss the importance of internet usage throughout the
world in order to prove that such a useful tool should be available to all people.

A. Recently, businesses have begun to use the internet as a business tool handling
transactions and many applications.

B. If the Government uses the internet as a tool of record, often times mandatory,
then why is it not provided to the general population in need of internet access?

[Transition: First things first, what is the importance of internet as a business tool?]
1.) Main Point: For starters, businesses often require the use of a computer and access to
internet as a way to communicate, keep record, and even hire emplyees.

A.) Sub-point: Communication within the business world is essential.

i. Sub-sub-point: Without proper communication, businesses would fall
apart because projects could not be completed, transactions would not be
authorized, and the timeliness that society expects would not be possible.

ii. Sub-sub-point: The internet is a key form of communication. The
growing rate of email, instant messaging, and even social networking has
shifted the business world into a more modern take on communication.
Businesses often use the internet as an efficient tool to relay messages
quickly to employees and customers.

B.) Sub-point: In addition to its importance as a communication tool, the internet
is often a selling point to employers seeking employees.

i. Sub-sub-point: One of the most essential skills in todays world on a job
application is the ability to operate a computer and use the internet. Why is
this? Because of its increasing need within the business world.

ii. Sub-sub-point: In a recent interview, The New York Times published:
The job Im trying to get now requires me to know how to operate a
computer, said Elmer Griffin, 70, a retired truck driver from Bessemer,
Ala., who was recently rejected for a job at an auto-parts store because he
was unable to use the computer to check the inventory. I wish I knew how,
I really do. People dont even want to talk to you if you dont know how to
use the Internet.

[Transition: .gov is one of the most common ends to internet addresses.]
2.) Main Point: Government agencies use the internet as a source of census, tracking,
subsidy application, and general opinion.
A.) Sub-Point: The internet is not only a form of record, but it also acts as an
international treaty.
i. Sub-sub-point: If there is one thing the world can agree on, it is the
convenience of internet and its importance in modern society.

ii. Sub-sub-point: With free internet access to all users, the world would be
able to relay news faster.

iii. Sub-Sub-point: The internet also acts as a source of education. It keeps
users informed on global happenings.


[Transition: What problems lie in making internet available to EVERYONE?]
3.) Main Point: The biggest problem is lack of effort toward the problem.
A.) Sub-point: While libraries, free wifi locations, and even new towers have
made steps toward completely free usage, they still limit those without the necessary
tools and ambition to use the internet.
i. Sub-sub-point: Older people generally fear internet usage because they
believe it will be complicated.
ii. Sub-sub-point: The biggest step that needs to be taken is educating society on
why internet is important and why we should learn to use it.

[Transition: Current internet providers making millions would fight hard against this, but
understanding why it is needed would be a bigger fight than the selfish fight of companies.]

I.) Sign post: In conclusion, the internet is used daily by billions of people and has a
significant impact on the world.
II.) Summary: Although it could be difficult, there are many reasons why internet
should be free to all users.
A.) Businesses require internet as a form of communication and often use
knowledge of it as an important asset when hiring employees.
B.) The internet is used within the government and could create a more educated
international system..
C.) While there are still many problems with free internet, understanding its
importance could help solve many of these issues.

III.) Clincher: Now, next time you log on to check your Facebook and talk to relative
you cant see, or fill out an application for federal financial aid, or even a job application that is
online, consider how important the internet is to you. Then consider how important it is for the
rest of the world to have the same benefits that you do.
