Celebrating 40 Years of the
Religious Education Congress
Though this year marks our 40th Congress, the event really had its roots earlier. In
1956, the first Los Angeles CCD “Institute” was held at Mount Carmel High School
on Hoover Street in Los Angeles. Some 500 teachers and catechists attended the
two-day conference, listened to speakers and gained experience from other teach-
ers. The institutes grew in attendance each year and by 1967 it was apparent that
local schools could no longer handle the crowds and a new site was needed.
So it was in 1967 with the cooperation of the three dioceses of Los Angeles, Monterey-
Fresno and San Diego, the agenda for the first three-day “Congress” was set. The
purpose, as stated by officials: “The Southern California Confraternity Congress
hopes to provide an atmosphere of Christian unity ... and learning, where all who

Held January 13-15, 1967, at the International Hotel near Los Angeles International
Airport, the first Southern California Confraternity Congress had a registration fee
of $5. The theme was adopted from the words of Pope John XXIII in his opening
address to the Second Vatican Council:
“The greatest concern of the Ecumenical Council is this: that the sacred de-
posit of Christian doctrine should be guarded and taught more efficaciously.”
“From these words the decrees of Vatican II have formulated for Christians every-

The theme: “The unmistakable work being done today by the Holy Spirit in making
the laity ever more conscious of their own responsibility and encouraging them to
serve Christ and the church m all circumstances.”
The third Congress (February 21-23, 1969) was the last at the International Hotel,
and was the first to incorporate Scripture in its theme: “How beautiful on the moun-
tains, are the feet of one who brings good news, who heralds peace, brings happi-

the 1967 Congress event.
Again, attendance began to outgrow the hotel’s facilities, and in 1970 Congress
moved to the much larger Anaheim Convention Center (February 20-22), where
registration was $5 for one day or per workshop; $10 for two days. The first day was
a Youth Conference for high school students only.
The March 26-28, 1971 Congress carried the theme “You Shall be my Witnesses to
the Ends of the Earth” (Acts 1:8), while the February 18-20, 1972, Congress was a
50th Jubilee celebration of the creation of the CCD in Los Angeles.
In 1973, the event was retitled the Religious Education Congress, and bilingual
themes were adopted in 1979.

ASAMBLEA GENERAL
Sala B – Domingo, 8:30 a.m.
RICARDO GRZONA
“Catequista: Luz para alumbrar a las naciones”
Jesús vino para iluminarnos el camino. El catequista es el conductor hacia la
Luz Verdadera. Distinguir la luz de la oscuridad. Luces y sombras del mundo
actual.

BLESSING PRAYER
PRAYER
ABlessingPrayerForLight
for the 2007 Los Angeles Religious Education Congress
That our thoughts may be true light, When we become false and lost
Finding their way into words That the severe noon-light
Which have the weight of shadow Would cast our shadow clear.
To hold the layers of truth.
When we love, that dawn-light
That we never place our trust Would lighten our feet
In minds claimed by empty light, Upon the waters.
Where one-sided certainties
Are driven by false desire. As we grow old, that twilight
Would illuminate treasure
When we look into the heart, In the fields of memory.
May our eyes have the kindness
And reverence of candlelight. When we come to search for God,
Let us first be robed in night,
Put on the mind of morning
To feel the insurgency
Of light that will slow
Inside the stillness
Of a found world.

Verse 1 In the east, the place of dawning, there is beauty in the morn,
Here the seeker finds new visions as each sacred day is born;
All who honor life around them, all who honor life within,
They shall shine with light and glory when the morning breaks again.
Verse 2 In the south, the place of growing, there is wisdom in the earth,
Both the painful song of dying and the joyful song of birth;
As the earth gives up her lifeblood so her children’s hearts may beat,
We give back to her our reverence holy ground beneath our feet.
Verse 3 In the north, the place of wisdom, there is holy darkness deep,
Here the silent song of mystery may awake you from your sleep;
Here the music still and holy sounds beneath the snow and night
In the ones who wait with patience for the coming of the light.
Verse 4 In the west, the place of seeing, there is born a vision new
Of the servant of the servants, who proclaimed a gospel true;
Let the creatures of creation echo back creations prayer,
Let the Spirit now breathe through us and restore the sacred there.

Verse 3 A light to all nations, what we need to be.
Look to the testaments, all the experts do agree.
A When you love in the darkness you can never be free.
Y I’m a living example of having sight but couldn’t see.
My humanness and stupidness got in the way.
I was busy and dizzy, couldn’t tell the night from day.
Blinded by my actions and my personal gain, didn’t know today’s
pleasure reaped a treasure of pain.
But just like Paul, knocked off my horse, the Holy Spirit entered, put
me back on my course.
I said, “Mirror, mirror, mirror up on the wall, show me the way before
I take a nasty fall.”
Then I closed my eyes; before me did I see the Light of the World.
Jesus came to me! The sacrament and sign’s a friend of mine.
I knew that I was walking the borderline.
So now that I’m aware that my ambition is my mission, to be the light
of Christ I’ve now been commissioned.
A light to all nations is what we need to be.
Look to the testaments; he can set you free! (Refrain)

Now to your court your people ascends. Some come with partners, some come with

dreaming, rich and poor, All come streaming through the door. (Refrain)
Nurturing peace while mending our rifts, Great is our need, but greater your gifts.
Some come for comfort, some come assured, All come challenged by your word.
Strangers, foes, and friends unite, All come streaming into light. (Refrain)
Summoned by Christ to seek out the lost, Knowing the path will lead to the cross,
Banker and debtor, prisoner and judge, Called to table by your word.
Bearing simple bread and wine, All come streaming here to dine. (Refrain)
Build us for healing, build us for rest, Welcome revealing Christ is our guest.
Some come as prophets, some come to nurse, Sent for service by your word.
Let the teeming nations come streaming here to sing as one: (Refrain)

Refrain/Estribillo
Verse 1 Light poured out, wraps all creation in beauty and warmth, in love and
compassion. We stand in awe before our incredible God, whose glory
resounds, whose brightness transcends beyond the heavens and the earth.
Rap
(English) We dare to be the brightness in the places of creation where we find the
lost and lonely and bring them to salvation. Standing in the light we see it
takes communication to spread the truth revealed in words and full
participation.
Invited by the Word and inspired by the Spirit, the call to realize we must
Arena
reveal it. Once you know the truth, once you’ve seen the light there’s no
way to deny that lies hide in the night.
Be vigilant and diligent throughout all your days and connect with the
fact that the light is here to stay. Create a new norm that it’s time to
transform from blindness to sight so that we live in peace and right.
Walking in the darkness means walking with desires for earthly kinds of
things that will end up in the fire.
Be true to the truth because it tells the real story. Stand in the light, we
reflect God’s glory.
Rap
