ver six million visitors come to the Oktoberfest
in Munich each year. However, its not just
here that visitors to the Bavarian Alps can experience
traditions and customs close at hand, with dirndls,
lederhosen and brass band music.
All across the region the best rural traditions can be
seen when maypoles are put up and the blue and white
of the Bavarian royal colours recall the beginnings of
the Bavarian kingdom, when impressive Corpus Christi
processions testify to the deep-rooted piety of the
people, when in autumn the cattle are driven back down
from the mountains in a colourful ceremony and festive
Leonhardi processions take place on horseback. The
numerous beer gardens, where in addition to beer you
can also enjoy the world-famous Bavarian delicacies
such as Weisswurst (veal sausage), Obadza (made of
Camembert cheese, butter, onions and paprika) and
knuckle of pork, are an integral part of the culture of
daily life in this area, which is the home of the art of
brewing beer. As the beer garden season gradually draws
to a close the magic of the Christmas markets and the
aroma of gingerbread and mulled wine start to waft over
the romantic villages and towns of the Bavarian Alps

he Bavarian Alps provide holiday makers with
perfect conditions for every kind of outdoor
activity. Both in summer and in winter. Both for
those who enjoy extreme sports and for visitors who
would rather take things easy.
Amidst the charms of unspoilt nature in the Bavarian
Alps you can soon forget the daily grind whether you
opt for unhurried bike rides or demanding mountain
bike trails, for Nordic Walking or hikes through the
untouched countryside, for the experience of climbing
precipitous cliff faces or going on romantic boat trips.
If you want to learn more about country life you can
stay on a farm and be initiated into the ancient lore of
herbs by an expert teacher. For most people, however,
the Bavarian Alps are associated with top class winter
sports locations. And with good reason. Here where
elite skiers and snowboarders, cross-country skiers and
biathletes, speed-skaters and bobsleigh riders come
together, there is unlimited enjoyment in the snow
for everyone. On the Zugspitze, Germanys highest
mountain at 2994 metres, you can enjoy the magic of

nd the numerous museums outside Munich also
bear witness to the high level of importance
that art has always enjoyed in the Bavarian Alps. For
example, the Wittelsbacher family, who ruled the
kingdom of Bavaria from the time of its founding in
, were prominent patrons.
In the castles of Neuschwanstein, Herrenchiemsee and
Linderhof you can immerse yourself in the fairy-tale
world of Ludwi g II, the most dazzling regent of the
Wittelsbacher dynasty. A long time even before that, the
Fuggers, a rich merchant family, put their architectural
stamp on the city of Augsburg rococo buildings going
down in history as the Augsburg style. And what would
the Bavarian Alps be without their mighty churches and
monasteries and the distinctive onion domes reaching
skywards throughout the region? The Wieskirche in the
Pfaffenwinkel is an outstanding example of a Baroque
church that has been raised to the status of world
cultural heritage site. Thanks to the lively arts and
cultural scene you can enjoy top-class concert series and
music festivals, literature events and exhibitions all year
round.

hat is why there are so many spas and health
resorts in the Bavarian Alps. Only towns and
communities meet the extremely high standards
imposed on health resorts claiming to have a
beneficial climate.
Between Lake Constance and the Knigssee you have
a choice of several dozen spas and health resorts, in
which you can combine classics such as mud and fango
treatments, drinking and bathing cures, or Kneipp
and Schroth applications with a variety of relaxation
techniques, innovative training methods and new forms
of therapy. In the five thermal spas in the Bavarian Alps,
however, everything revolves around iodine, sulphur
and brine as the healing gifts of Nature. The designated
Vitalhfe (vitality farms) convey rural knowledge about
maintaining vitality to their guests. If you simply want
to give yourself a treat, you can also opt for one of the
many certified Wellness Hotels and forget the daily grind

Dachau
C I T Y
Memorial place and town of artists The 1.200 year-old
town of Dachau is, unlike any other German town, a town of
contrasts with its culture and contemporary history.
The name Dachau is known throughout the world as the town
containing the first concentration camp in Bavaria. Today the
towns principal maxim is to keep alive the memory of what
happened and to never let it be forgotten. So in 2006 the town is
creating a memory lane which offers a topography of the history
from the railway station through to the KZ memorial site.
To an increased extent, Dachau is pinning its hopes on
culture. The Dachau Castle concerts are held in the magnificent

Alttting is the heart of Bavaria and one of Europe`s hearts.
(Pope Benedict XVI)
Alttting is situated in the charming upper-bavarian foothills of
the alps, between Munich, Passau, Salzburg and not far from
Lake Chiemsee. More than 1 million pilgrims and visitors a
year seek the most important place of pilgrimage for the Virgin
Mary in Germany: the Black Madonna in the octagon of the
Gnadenkapelle (Chapel of Grace). The small church building
which dates back to the 8th century is situated in the middle of
the wide Kapellplatz which is lined with Baroque buildings. Inside
it also contains the silver heart urns of the Bavarian kings and
Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, grew up in the Inn-Salzach region
and frequently prayed in Alttting the most important place of pilgrimage to
the Virgin Mary in Germany. So it is with good reason that the Benediktweg is
dedicated to him. The 224-kilometre-long cycle route transports you back to the
Holy Fathers childhood and adolescence and leads you to sights far from the
hurly-burly of the usual tourist destinations. Visit Burghausen with the longest
castle in Europe, stop off at Mhldorf am Inn with its impressive merchants houses and Mediterranean-style
arcades. You can enjoy the Salzach valley and the
naturalness of this unique river landscape by taking a
trip on an exact replica of one of the salt barges that

The climatic health resort of Aschau i.Ch., 615 to 1808 m, and the
mountain resort of Sachrang at 735 m, where winter snowfall is
assured.
The impressive 1669-m Kampenwand mountain with its three
jagged peaks and the castle of Schlo Hohenaschau, which
appears to be guarding the entrance to the valley from the top of
a rocky cliff, dominate the scenery lending an alpine ambience to
an area rich in culture and history.
Of course, all sorts of walking and hiking tours are offered here,
for example A river walk with a geologist. More than 300 km of
trails can be found throughout the valley and up to the highest
peaks. The top of the Kampenwand is easily reached by cable
railway, each car with a capacity for four.
Aschaus cultural roots date back 800 years to the ruling
aristocracy at Hohenaschau. They helped to form the western
Chiemgau and their decisions were influential not only in
their own jurisdiction, they were as far-reaching as the Munich
dukedoms, influencing the politics of the time. This rich cultural
heritage still plays an important role today.

The five lakes Starnberg, Ammer, Wrth, Pilsen and Weling are situated between the
rivers Ammer and Isar. This is an ideal area for leisure activities with a great variety of

The monastery Kloster Andechs and the Buchheim Museum in Bernried are only
two of the highlights awaiting you in this enically most attractive region.
The Heiliger Berg soars above the Ammersee. In 1455 the Benedictine monks founded the Andechs
monastery here, one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Germany and also where one of Bavarias
most palatable beers is served. But it is art and royalty, rather than the clergy that bring people to the Starnberger
See. The Buchheim Museum in Bernried, which houses works by the Expressionists together with collections
of folk art and ethnological artistry, attracts an international public. If you are interested in masterpieces of
Wittelsbach garden design you can saunter through Feldafing Park or take a boat trip across the Starnberger See
to Rose Island, where Sisi, later to become Empress of Austria, met her second cousin the fairy-tale King Ludwig

Why is the region between the Lech and the Loisach called Pfaffenwinkel (literally translated means it
priesters corner)? Because here you can see 159 churches and a wealth of monasteries in all their splendour. This
is clear evidence that the clergy recognised the charm of this region a long time ago. The area is one of the finest
in the Bavarian Alps for hiking and cycling. If you follow the Prlatenweg (Prelates Path) you will see one sacred
building after another adorned with ornate stucco and frescoes. The monastery of Kloster Rottenbuch, which
stands in solitary splendour on the steep banks of the River Ammer, is the embodiment of pure, unadulterated
Bavarian rococo church style, whereas behind the walls of Kloster Polling lies concealed a unique 18th century
library. Breathe in history itself in Kloster Wessobrunn, which was founded way back in 753, and take time to visit

restaurants are an invitation to sit down for a break. The wealth of past ages is
visible in the churches from Baroque and Rococo periods.
The town on the banks of the river Lech also offers natural attractions: the river
descends over a more than 200 m wide weir and the Lechpark Pssinger Au, an
enchanting natural recreation area with valuable biotopes, is only five minutes
away from the town centre.

Why does Allguer cheese taste so good?
Its a lot to do with the fact that the cows spend the
summer on the Alps and can enjoy fresh grass. One
of the highspots of the calendar when it comes to
farming traditions is when the cows are driven back
down into the valley in the autumn. Living traditions,
unspoilt nature and any amount of culture thats the
mixture that makes the Allgu so interesting.
There are so many important historical monuments
of note in the Allgu that they are like a string of
pearls. The reason for this is that before Napoleon
came and added the entire region to the Kingdom
of Bavaria, over 100 princes had ruled the area, each
one of them wanting to display his own grandeur.
The five former Free Imperial Cities in particular are
full of history: visit Memmingen with its striking gates
and towers; Kaufbeuren, which was founded in the
8th century as the Carolingian royal court; Kempten,
the metropolis of the Allgu, where the Celts settled
until the Roman conquerors arrived; Isny with its
impressive town hall, and Wangen, where
you will find some of the most charming
streets in Southern Germany. Enjoy being
captivated by the charms of the famous royal
castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau,
visit Fssen with its splendid Sankt-Mang monastery
Allgu
R E G I O N
and Ottobeuren with its basilica, considered to be the
finest German baroque church and where the public
can attend uplifting summer concerts performed by
international musicians. If you follow the Romantic
Road or the German Alpine Road, which goes from
Lindau to Berchtesgaden, you will automatically pass
many sights and will also be crossing a landscape of
unforgettable charms.
Even in the face of all its cultural and historical
delights, the Allgu is above all synonymous with
idyllic farmland among the foothills of the Alps, a
place where all is still right with the world. Go hiking
or cycling through unspoilt nature, to calm fens and
hidden lakes ideal for bathing, past neat farmhouses
whose balconies are laden with flame-red geraniums
so that they seem on the point of collapse. If you want
to head for the heights you can go from one mountain
hut to another, climb famous peaks, enjoy fantastic
panoramic views and conquer the remote world of the
chamois, the ibex and the marmot.
When the cows are in the barn, when winter comes
and the wooden shingle farmhouse roofs bend
under the weight of the snow, the Allgu becomes an
eldorado for all types of skiers. The 700 kilometres
of cross-country tracks and 200 kilometres of pistes
promise boundless enjoyment in the snow.

Bavarian Swabia
In the south of Bavarian Swabia lies Augsburg, the
second oldest city in Germany, which was founded
by the Romans in 15 BC and which, under the rule of
the Fugger and Welser families, rose to become the
largest financial trading place in Europe. Fifteen million
years ago a meteorite struck the north of the region,
forming the Rieskrater, a giant crater 24 kilometres in
diameter and shaped like an enormous soup plate.
Its significance is explained in the Rieskrater Museum
in Nrdlingen. In the east of Bavarian Swabia around
Aichach is the Wittelsbacher Land, where Sisi, later
to be Empress of Austria, used to spend the summer
during her childhood years. This leaves only the west,
where, on Ulm cathedral, the second largest church in
Germany, the tallest church spire in the world soars to
meet the sky.
In Bavarian Swabia the enjoyment of nature
combines with an incredible wealth of art and culture
plus the history of many different eras. Follow the
Romantic Road and discover medieval Nrdlingen
with its circular town wall that has been preserved in
its entirety, stay a while in Harburg, with its ancient
pillar, stroll through the Gothic and baroque charms of
Donauwrth and the old Bavarian clockmakers town
of Friedberg. Or you could also follow in the footsteps

Julia Augusta both pass through Bavarian Swabia. Near
Lauingen you will come across a 2000-year-old temple,
in which Apollo Grannus was once worshipped.
The landscape of the Donauried, a wetland area of
great importance on a European scale with its mosses
and alluvial forest, has a particular charm. The area
borders the river between Neu-Ulm and Donauwrth
and the best way to discover its finest aspects is to
follow the Danube cycle route. You will encounter
rare animals and plants in the moor land along the
mountain river, the Lech.
The area around Dillingen is now an eldorado for
water sports. This is the area where Father Kneipp
collected his experiences before inventing his now
world-famous hydrotherapy water cure. Even though
Oettingen and Ichenhausen will tempt you with two of
the last riverside open-air swimming pools in Bavaria,
the undisputed highlight for children is Legoland in
Gnzburg. Closely followed by the famous marionette
theatre, the Augsburger Puppenkiste, and its museum,
where figures from over 800 TV productions and
theatrical productions are on show.

of the romantic winding lanes.
It is possible to climb the bell tower of the Late Gothic hall church which the locals
have given the affectionate nickname Daniel. From the top, the visitor has a panoramic
view of the unique Ries countryside which was formed through the impact of a crater ca.
15 million years ago. There are numerous museums to visit.
