2013 European Summer Sports Tyre Test

We don't usually analyse the European tyre test, carried out by the excellent German ADAC organisation, but this
one was too good to ignore.
Not only is it the irst year they'!e used a tyre larger than "#$, there's se!eral new tyres in!ol!ed in the %%&'(&
)"* tyre test. +t's the irst time we'!e seen the new replacement or the ,redestein -ltrac .essanta in a group
test, along side some o it's new mid range stable mates, the /oyo /" .port and the 0al1en 02(&3, and its the
irst time we'!e seen the Continental .port Contact & beat the Goodyear Eagle 0" Asymmetric %. +nteresting4
The Details
/he reason we don't usually analyse the ADAC test is because it's a little thin on words, and sadly this year is no
dierent. What we can do, is wor1 out a little bit o orm rom the data.
/he Continental beat the Goodyear than1s to a stronger wet perormance, as it scored lower in the dry, was
noisier, used more uel and wore more 5uic1ly. +t's not unusual or tests to be weighted towards wet perormance,
and in this instance wet perormance was worth (67 o the inal grade, compared to %67 or the dry
perormance. .till, an excellent result or the .port Contact &, clearly the best in the wet and not ar behind in the
dry.
/he Goodyears new sister, the Dunlop .port8axx )/ matched the Goodyear in e!erything but the dry, where it
was only a little behind, and the ourth place 8ichelin almost matched the Dunlop, 9ust losing out in rolling
resistance and wear :oddly or a 8ichelin...; but second best in the wet.
0ith place is !ery respectable or the new ,redestein -ltrac ,orti, especially when you consider the tyres it's
normally compared against, the 0al1en 02(&3 and /oyo /" .port inished thirteenth and sixteenth respecti!ely.
/he ,redestein matched the top placed Goodyear in the dry and got excellent wear results, 9ust slightly mar1ed
down or its wet and rolling resistance results.
/he <ridgestone =oten>a .66" had a relati!ely poor result ending ninth due to an a!erage wet showing, despite
being excellent in the dry, and or some reason =irelli supplied the =*, instead o the more appropriate = ?ero.
/he result, ele!enth.
@ther points o note are a strong perormance or both Aan1oo1 and .emperit, and a poor result or -niroyal with
one o our a!ourites, the )ainsport %. While the -niroyal was still extremely strong in the wet, it was let down by
high uel consumption and a bad dry result. /he rumour on the street is the )ainsport 3 is due this year... it should
mo!e things on nicely.
