Police: Elderly
couple scammed
of nearly $72K
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Over a four-week period from
July to August, an elderly Eve-
sham couple was scammed of
nearly $72,000 as a result of tele-
marketing fraud, according to
Evesham Police.
Police said the scammer, an un-
known male, first called the cou-
ple claiming to be an employee of
Microsoft and then asked the cou-
ple if they had recently pur-
chased a computer.
The couple told the scammer
they had, and the scammer then
informed them they could receive
a $200 refund, as Microsoft would
no longer support software on the
computer they had recently pur-
chased.
The scammer also claimed the
couple was entitled to another
$100 because they were senior cit-
izens.
To receive the refund, one of
the couple provided the scammer
with the couples checking ac-
count and routing numbers, ac-

The Sun
Evesham Township originally
took over management of the In-
dian Spring Country Club to save
on costs.
It was then at a recent council
meeting that Sandy Student, who
was appointed interim business
manager of the township-owned
golf course earlier this year, gave
a presentation on changes to the
course for the first half of 2014.
Student, a partner in the firm
TechCXO, said for the first time,
Indian Spring management
spoke to 300 of its players and
members of different leagues to
determine what they would like
to see improved or changed at the
course.
There were 35 different things
that they listed, Student said.
Out of the top six, the No. 1 and
No. 2 improvements were sand in
the bunkers, which we went and
we didand the other suggestion
was improving the cart paths.
Student also said there have
been many changes to the driving
range, including longer hours,
new paint and the elimination of
the previously abused unlimited
bucket of balls.
The people came in and essen-
tially camped out there all day,
and that was a travesty, Student
said.
Another change to the course
is it now offers for sale brand
name merchandise.
Were associating with the
leading brands, and were at far
more competitive price points,
Student said. We found a few
other things that were in the attic
from 2008 and 2009 that were put
out after we discovered them, and
we marked things down.
The course has also been doing
well in spite of the amount of
rain and snowfall from earlier
this winter, according to Student.
Through June, there were 58
days where there were no rounds
of golf played on the course, com-
pared to 2013 when there were
only 18 days where no rounds
were played.
Student said revenue per day
was also up in spite of the previ-
ously inclement weather condi-
tions.
In 2014, our average revenue
per day is $4,800, taking the total
revenue and dividing it by 182,

W
ith schools preparing to
open their doors soon, now
is a good time to talk about
the upcoming academic year.
This week, were featuring our sec-
ond Back to School special section,
which is included inside this issue.
Next week, well have more compre-
hensive back to school coverage, in-
cluding a Q&A with the superintend-
ent of the school district to keep you
informed of all the changes and excite-
ment on the horizon for the 2014-2015
school year.
At The Sun, were all about commu-
nity news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meet-
ings as possible and do our best to stay
on top of the hard news taxes,
budgets, elections and the like.
But we want to be able to bring our
readers so much more. To do that, we
need your help.
When students achieve in the class-
room, in the arts, in sports, etc., we
want to hear about it, so that we can
share that news with the entire com-
munity. Recently, we created an On
Campus section of our paper to do
just that to recognize the hard-work-
ing students in a way that stands out
from other sections of our paper.
Making the honor roll, winning a
spelling bee, excelling in an extra-cur-
ricular activity, its all news to us.
Problem is, we dont always hear
about these accomplishments. Thats
where you come in.
If youre a parent, and your child
does something special, shoot us an
email. Include a photo, if possible.
If youre a teacher or principal, and
you have a special event coming up or
there is other news that your home-
town should know about, tell us about
it. If possible, well have a reporter
present to cover the event or write a
story and take photos. If not, well fig-
ure out a way to get your news into the
paper, one way or another.
Too often, the news is driven by
events that anger or sadden people.
Too often, the good work of young peo-
ple is ignored or, at the least, certainly
not celebrated the way it should be.
And there are a lot of young people
doing good these days.
We want to change that. We want to
let everyone in town know when
theres something positive going on,
when young people go beyond the ordi-
nary to help someone or have an out-
standing accomplishment.
Call, email or write. Just let us know
whats happening in your school so
that we can share it.

Student said. We are ahead of
last year over $1,000 a day. Were
also ahead for rounds. The driv-
ing range were ahead almost
3,000 buckets of balls.
Student also referenced a re-
cent report from the Professional
Golfers' Association of America
that stated the first half of 2014
has had the fewest open days in
revenue and rounds of golf ever
reported since it has been in busi-
ness.
According to the report, in the
northeast, rounds are down 10-12
percent from last year, revenue is
down 5-14 percent, and revenue in
New Jersey specifically is down 9
percent.
Student compared those num-
bers to Indian Spring, where he
said overall revenue and rounds
werent down by nearly as much.
For the first half of 2014 ver-
sus 2013, our rounds are down 4
percent and our revenue is down
4 percent, so that is incredible,
Student said. We are ahead of
the other people in New Jersey.
When asked about the town-
ships management of the course,
Mayor Randy Brown said he loves
the progress the township has
made in a short time, and he was
proud of Student and the rest of
the staff.
They say people get lucky, but
to me, luck is the residue of hard
work and preparation, and we
have spent hours and hours into
the thousands of hours racking
our minds on how to improve this
golf course, and were doing
that, Brown said.
Brown said the township has
no choice but to try everything it
can to increase revenues to pay
off the yearly $1.1 million debt
service bond payment.
When youve got a $1.1 million
bond staring you in the face,
youve got to be creative and
think outside the box on how to
bring added revenue in, and were
doing it, Brown said. Thats
all we can ask these guys right
now.

At their recent meeting, the
trustees of the Former Agents of
the FBI Foundation voted to
award a scholarship for the 2014 -
2015 academic year to Edward
Curtin of Marlton. Curtin will at-
tend the Stevens Institute of
Technology in Hoboken in the
fall. He is the grandson of former
FBI Agent John T. Curtin.
The funding of the Foundation
scholarship program is based in
part on an endowment made by
the late Rosamond Woodruff
Morgan in honor of her husband,
Judge Roy L. Morgan. The foun-
dation continues to honor the
memory of both Mr. and Mrs.
Morgan through scholarships
granted to outstanding students.
Selection is based on a students
financial need, academic achieve-
ment, leadership and/or commu-
nity involvement.
The Former Agents of the FBI
Foundation is the philanthropic
arm of the Society of Former
Special Agents of the FBI, Inc., lo-
cated in Dumfries, Va. For the
20142015 academic year, the
Foundation will award a total of
261 scholarships ranging from
$1,000 to $20,000 per year. Under-
graduates who are children and
grandchildren of former FBI
Agents or children of graduates
of the FBI National Academy,
who are pursuing degrees in a va-
riety of subjects, are eligible to
apply. Beginning in December, in-
formation and applications for
the 20152016 Scholarship Pro-
gram will be available online at

cording to police.
When the couple looked at
their bank account several hours
later, they discovered that thou-
sands of dollars had been deposit-
ed into their account instead of
just the original several hundred
dollars the scammer told them
they were entitled to.
The couple called the scammer
back immediately and informed
him there had been a mistake.
The scammer then asked the
couple to return to him the extra
thousands of dollars, minus the
amount of the originally offered
refund.
Police said the couple then
used Western Union and PayPal
accounts over the course of the
following weeks to return the
thousands of dollars to the scam-
mer, but in every instance, the
scammer would eventually call
the couple to say that he had not
received any money.
According to Evesham Police
Lt. Joseph Friel, the $72,000 was
the largest amount he could re-
member being stolen from Eve-
sham residents in a telemarket-
ing scam.
This is probably the highest I
remember on something like
that, Friel said. Most of the
time, people dont fall victim to
scams, but they call police saying
someone tried to scam them, but
thats the highest that I remem-
ber.
Friel also said with telemarket-
ing scams such as this, the
chances of recovering the vic-
tims money are low, especially if
the investigation leads overseas,
which most usually do.
Most of time, a victims best
chance of recovery of their loss
would be through the fraud de-
partment or the insurance
through their bank, Friel said.
The Evesham Police Depart-
ment receives several reports of
phone scams a week, according to
Friel, and scams where money is
first deposited into victims ac-
counts before a larger amount is
stolen is not unheard of.
We do get some where some-
body will send them a check and
theyll send them too much and
they ask them to send them the
difference, and theyll kind of
play that game until they can ac-
cess the account.
Evesham police warn residents
with the following list that con-
tains just some of the phrases or
reasons scammers might poten-
tially use in their attempt to com-
mit telemarketing fraud:
You must act now or the
offer wont be good.
Youve won a free gift, vaca-
tion, or prize. But you have to
pay for postage and handling or
other charges.
You must send money, give a
credit card or bank account num-
ber, or have a check picked up by
courier. You may hear this be-
fore you have had a chance to con-
sider the offer carefully.
You dont need to check out
the company with anyone. The
callers say you do not need to
speak to anyone including your
family, lawyer, accountant, local
Better Business Bureau or con-
sumer protection agency.
You dont need any written
information about their company
or their references.
You cant afford to miss this
high-profit, no-risk offer.
Police advise the public to re-
spond with a simple no thank
you and hang up the phone if
they hear similar phrases from
callers.
Evesham police also direct
those looking for more informa-
tion regarding common phone
and mail scams visit

The following information
comes from Lt. Joseph Friel at the
Evesham Township Police De-
partment:
On Aug. 7, Evesham Police con-
ducted a criminal investigation
into alleged prostitution after re-
ceiving numerous reports of sus-
picious activity coming from the
S & L Wellness Center Massage
Parlor, 50 S. Maple Ave.
The investigation ultimately
led to the arrest of a New York
woman who was allegedly using
the business to promote prostitu-
tion. During this investigation,
detectives located numerous on-
line advertisements requiring po-
tential clients to call prior to mak-
ing any appointments. Detectives
conducted surveillance on the lo-
cation and were quickly able to lo-
cate several individuals who ob-
tained sexual favors in exchange
for currency. The following were
charged with prostitution-related
offenses:
A female, age 52, of Flushing,
N.Y., was charged with fourth-de-
gree promoting prostitution and a
disorderly persons offense for en-
gaging in prostitution. She was re-
leased on her own recognizance.
A female, age 45, unknown ad-
dress, was charged with a disor-
derly persons offense for engag-
ing in prostitution. She was re-
leased on her own recognizance.
A male, age 58 of Ship Bottom,
was charged with a disorderly
persons offense for engaging in
prostitution. He was released on
his own recognizance.
A male, age 40, of Mount Lau-
rel, was charged with a disorderly
persons offense for engaging in
prostitution. He was released on
his own recognizance.
